There's something touching about watching a child prepare for their first day of school. The careful selection of the perfect outfit, laid out the night before. The new backpack, zipped and unzipped a dozen times to make sure everything fits just right. The quiet rehearsal of walking to the bus stop, just to be certain they know the way.

Most of us remember our own version of this ritual. Maybe it was practicing a locker combination all summer long, terrified of fumbling with it in a crowded hallway. Or memorizing the route between classrooms, worried about being late and having everyone stare. Those seemingly small preparations felt monumentally important because, to a young mind, they were.

What strikes me now is how we adults sometimes forget what it feels like to face something completely unknown. When did we stop remembering that every "first time" requires a special kind of courage? That six-year-old practicing their walk to the bus stop is doing exactly what we all do when facing the uncertain - finding one small thing they can control and mastering it.

The truth is, we never really outgrow those first-day butterflies. Starting a new job, moving to a new town, walking into a room full of strangers - that same flutter of uncertainty is still there. The same need to prepare, to practice, to feel ready for what we can't possibly predict.

Maybe that's what courage really looks like. Not the absence of fear, but the willingness to take the first step anyway, even when your heart is racing and you're not entirely sure what comes next.

After all, we were all beginners once.

What Did You Learn From Your Dad?

I was thinking about fathers today — what they give us, what we learn from them and how those lessons stay with us long after they're gone.

Some of us were fortunate to have fathers who showed up consistently and taught us through words and actions. Others learned from father figures, mentors or the absence of them. Whether our experiences were filled with warmth or marked by complicated emotions, many of us carry something forward from these relationships that shaped us.

What strikes me most about fatherhood isn't its perfection but its impact. The values we choose to embrace, the traditions we carry forward and, sometimes, the cycles we consciously break are parts of this inheritance. We can honor what was meaningful while creating our own definitions of what it means to care for others.

Today, whether we're celebrating, remembering, reconciling or simply acknowledging the complex emotions this day brings, we can take a moment to recognize the lessons that strengthen us, the memories that guide us and the love — whether abundantly given or achingly absent — that shape our understanding of care and commitment.

What will you choose to carry forward? What will you leave behind? These choices make our journeys uniquely ours, even as they connect us to those who came before.

Can a Mother's Instinct Change the World?

The influence of mothers shapes us in subtle and profound ways. Although every mother doesn’t achieve heroic recognition, their daily choices, their persistent faith in our potential and their quiet wisdom help build the foundation of who we become. Through their example and encouragement, we often find strength we didn't know we had.

During the 1950s, when Eustacia Cutler took her 4-year-old daughter Temple to the doctor, she heard words no mother wants to hear. The doctors diagnosed Temple with autism and then recommended institutionalization — the standard medical advice of that era. They said Temple would never speak, never connect, never thrive.

But Eustacia saw something different in her daughter's eyes. Where others saw only limitations, she noticed how Temple could think in pictures, how she related to animals in unique ways and how she processed the world differently — not wrongly.

Against the prevailing wisdom of the time, Eustacia made a bold decision. Instead of institutionalizing Temple, she created an enriched environment at home. She hired a speech therapist, encouraged Temple's natural interests and, most importantly, presumed competence when others assumed limitation.

Her insight proved transformative. Temple Grandin went on to earn a Ph.D., revolutionize animal science, design more-humane livestock-handling equipment used worldwide and become one of the world's most-influential voices in understanding autism.

Today, Dr. Temple Grandin often credits her success to her mother's early insight. "My mother never gave up on me,” she said. “She recognized that different didn't mean less." Sometimes a mother's wisdom isn't just about raising a child; it's about changing the world's perspective, one person at a time.

In a small coastal town, an elderly woman spent decades running the local antique shop. Every April, she would close her store for two weeks - not for vacation, but for what she called "the renewal."

Visitors often wondered why she dedicated so much time to spring cleaning when her shop already sparkled. Her response was always the same: "I'm not just cleaning, I'm rediscovering."

Each year, as she moved each piece in her shop, she would find something extraordinary - a hidden hallmark on a silver teapot, a forgotten note tucked in a vintage book, or simply a new way to display an overlooked item. These discoveries often led to the most remarkable sales of the year.

But her greatest insight came when a young apprentice asked why she didn't hire others to help speed up the process. She smiled and explained, "Some treasures can only be found by slowing down. Each piece needs to be held, considered, and appreciated anew. What Can Cherry Blossoms Teach Us About Perfect Timing And Preparation?

In a small mountain village in Japan, an elderly gardener spent 50 years tending to a single cherry tree. Visitors often questioned his dedication to this one tree, especially because the surrounding hillsides burst with thousands of blossoms each spring.

Every year, he studied his tree and pruned it with careful precision. While other trees bloomed in spectacular shows of pink, his tree remained modest but grew slowly and steadily. Some villagers whispered that he had wasted his life on an unremarkable tree.

Then one spring, when the other cherry trees began to fade and a late frost killed the flowers, his tree burst into bloom, making it the only cherry tree still blooming during the village's annual festival.

The gardener's patient cultivation had created a unique variety of tree that bloomed later than others, which ensured the festival would always have cherry blossoms. His decades of careful attention resulted in something extraordinary because he understood that some things require their own perfect timing.

Sometimes the most valuable growth happens in its own time, invisible to others until the moment is right.

Health: Our Most Precious Investment

February is often celebrated as a time for romantic love, but love takes many forms worth honoring. While romance captures attention, the lasting power of committed love, compassionate love and, perhaps most importantly, self-love truly shapes our lives. These deeper forms of love reveal themselves through the care and commitment we show to others — and ourselves — every day.

Prioritizing our health is one of the most profound ways we express self-love. Too often, we place everyone else's needs above our own well-being. But one of the greatest acts of love — for ourselves and for those who care about us — is making time for preventive healthcare.

Many of us know at least one person who discovers that a treatable form of cancer or another health condition could have been caught earlier through routine screening. We often hear, "I just never made the time to get checked out."

Healthcare professionals remind us that serious health conditions often begin silently: A quick blood pressure check might prevent a stroke, a routine mammogram might detect cancer at its most treatable stage, or a basic cholesterol screening might lead to lifestyle changes that add years to our lives.

Timing matters with these screenings. At 40, our bodies begin to send signals to which we should listen. By 45, consider having screenings, such as those for colorectal and prostate health. And at 50, it’s time to check in on bone density and lung health.

Remarkably, these potential life-saving measures require minimal time — 10 minutes for a blood pressure check, 30 minutes for a mammogram and an hour for an annual physical. These small investments can reshape our future.

Remember that our health is the foundation for all of our plans and dreams. Every moment spent on preventive care is a gift — to ourselves and to everyone counting on us to be around for several more years.

The New Year's Soup Of New Beginnings

New Year's Day always filled the Anderson house with the comforting aroma of herbs and warmth. At the center of this tradition was Grandma Sarah's special black-eyed pea soup, a dish she believed could inspire positive change.

This year, the Andersons needed that inspiration more than ever. Tom had lost his job in October and Emily's small bakery was struggling. Their teenage son, Jake, was withdrawing into himself and neither parent knew how to reach him.

As the family gathered in the kitchen on New Year's Eve, the atmosphere was heavy with unspoken concerns. Grandma Sarah, sensing the tension, clapped her hands.

"Come on, let's start the soup," she said, her eyes twinkling.

She assigned tasks to everyone. Tom soaked the black-eyed peas, Emily chopped onions and garlic, and Jake oversaw the herbs.

"Easy with the thyme, Jake," Grandma said. "It's potent, like new beginnings."

Gradually, the kitchen filled with conversation and the rich aroma of simmering soup.

When the clock struck midnight, Grandma ladled the steaming soup into bowls. "Remember," she said, "it's not just about eating it; it's about believing in new possibilities."

They savored each spoonful of the warm broth and tender peas. While they ate, something shifted. Tom mentioned a promising job lead. Emily's eyes lit up with an idea for a new line of pastries. Jake, to everyone's surprise, suggested helping at the bakery after school.

Whether it was the soup's warmth or the simple act of coming together, the Anderson family stepped into the New Year with renewed hope and determination.

Here's Grandma Sarah's recipe for New Year's Black-Eyed Pea Soup.

Ingredients:

1 pound dried black-eyed peas, soaked overnight
1 large onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons olive oil
6 cups broth
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
2 carrots, diced
2 celery stalks, diced
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
Chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions:

1. In a large pot, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil.

2. Add carrots and celery, and cook for 5 minutes.

3. Add soaked peas, broth, bay leaf, thyme, and paprika.

4. Simmer for 1 - 1.5 hours until peas are tender.

5. Add diced tomatoes and simmer for another 10 minutes.

6. Season with salt and pepper.

7. Serve hot, garnished with parsley.

As Grandma Sarah always said, "Serve with a side of hope and a sprinkle of faith in the future."

Create a buying schedule to get the most out of your holiday shopping season. If you're an online shopper, buy early to avoid extra shipping costs. If you wait until the last minute, you could end up paying more than you would have if you had bought early.

Rewards Apps like Honey, Rakuten, and BeFrugal can help you win the holidays when shopping online. If your credit card works with these apps, congratulations! You'll get even better discounts to help with your budget.

The Mapmaker's Dilemma

Here is a quick story about how to take your next step in a complex world.

In a bustling town lived Ella the mapmaker. She was known for creating the most intricate and detailed maps anyone had ever seen. People came from far and wide to commission her work, believing that the more complex the map, the better their journey would be.

One day, Sam, a young traveler, arrived at Ella's shop.

"I need a map to the Whispering Falls," he said. "It's for my first solo adventure."

Ella began crafting an elaborate map, filling it with countless paths, landmarks and warnings. As she worked, she noticed Sam's anxiety growing.

"Is something wrong?" she asked.

"It's just ... it looks so complicated," Sam said. "I'm not sure I can follow all this."

Ella paused, remembering her own first journey. On impulse, she set aside the complex map and took out a fresh sheet.

With a few simple strokes, she drew a clear path to the falls. "Here," she said, "this is all you need to start. Just take the first step, then the next. The path will reveal itself."

Sam's relief was apparent. He took the simplified map and set out with newfound confidence.

Weeks later, Sam returned, his eyes shining with adventure. "Your map was perfect," he said. "I discovered so much more than just the falls. I learned to trust myself and enjoy the journey."

During the summer, daylight lasts longer, the air is warmer and the scent of blooming flowers makes the air sweeter. Yes, summer is special.

Most people think about inspirational messages during January, when the new year begins. But summer is unique because it brings people together, makes us feel alive and invites us to step out of our routines, take family vacations and spend time with the people we care about most. Children are out of school, running around in the sunshine, their laughter echoing through the neighborhood. During these few months, people congregate around water — the beach, lakes, ponds and water parks. There's something about the warmth of the sun and the coolness of the water that brings us together, that makes us feel alive.

Yet, summer will soon be over, so enjoy every minute of it. I've made a commitment to myself — to appreciate every moment; to live in the now. And I encourage you to do the same.

The Martin family hadn't gathered at the old family lake house in years. Over time, distance and life's busy pace had seen the once-close family drifting apart. This summer, however, Grandma Martin, the matriarch of the family, decided it was time to bring everyone back together. She sent out invitations for a grand family reunion, urging everyone to bring something special to share.

As the reunion day approached, the Martins arrived from various parts of the country, each carrying unique ingredients for a massive family meal. The youngest ones gathered wildflowers and decorations to decorate the tables.

Under the old oak tree, they talked about old family recipes and their new dishes this year. The once-quiet lake house was now buzzing with activity as everyone found a role. The kitchen was a symphony of chopping, stirring, and laughter.

When the meal was ready, they laid out a long table under the twinkling fairy lights. As they sat down to eat, each dish told a story of where they came from and who they had become.

Grandma Martin raised her glass in a toast. "Just like this meal, we are each unique but when together, we create something richer and fuller."

As the night set in, the children lit sparklers, running around the yard. In the distance, fireworks began to dot the sky. The family, now reconnected, watched in awe, reminded of their childhood Fourth of Julys spent at this very lake house.

The reunion, while seemingly just a gathering, was a reminder of their strength in unity. The family, like the community they symbolized, was strongest when together.

As we approach another Father's Day, I want to share with you a reminder of the simple yet profound moments that make this day so special. The Story

John always found Father’s Day a challenge, because how do you encapsulate a lifetime of quiet support in a card? This year, however, he had a different idea. Amid the attic’s dusty boxes, he found an old, tarnished fishing rod that belonged to his father.

Early on Father's Day, John drove to his father's house, with the fishing rod hidden in the trunk. "Let's go for a drive," he suggested. His father agreed, curious about John’s secretive smiles.

The drive ended at the lake where they had spent countless hours when John was a boy. When John revealed the fishing rod, his father’s eyes lit up with nostalgia. "Thought we might give it another go," John said, his voice tinged with excitement.

Side by side, they cast their lines, just like old times. The fish weren’t biting, but that didn’t matter. They talked about everything and nothing, the comfortable silences speaking volumes. As the sun set, casting a golden glow over the water, John realized the best gift wasn’t the rod or the fish they never caught; it was the chance to relive special memories and create new ones, together, on this special day.

Summer temps are only getting warmer. Make sure that you and your family can stay cool this summer with a fully functional air conditioning system. It's good to get it professionally cleaned and inspected before the hot temps really fire up.

Prep Your Yard and Garden

Spring is the perfect time to ensure a beautiful summer in your yard and garden. Test all of your irrigation for leaks. Clean your yard and garden of weeds and mulch from last season. Starting fresh with new mulch will give your flower beds and shrubs a little pop this summer.

In the vastness of Kenya's savannah, surrounded by acacias and the distant roars of lions, Wangari Maathai carved a path of resilience and hope. Born in a small village in 1940, she grew up in a society in which women's voices were often overlooked. Despite this, Wangari was determined to be heard — not just for her own sake, but for the betterment of her country and the planet.

She shattered expectations by becoming the first East African woman to earn a Ph.D. Her ambitions didn't stop with academia. In 1977, Wangari launched the Green Belt Movement, a revolutionary effort that encouraged women to plant trees, fight deforestation and restore their environment. This initiative was about more than just planting trees; it was about planting seeds of empowerment and change, ultimately planting more than 51 million trees and transforming the lives of countless women and their families.

In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Her achievement underscored the profound impact of her work on peace and environmental conservation. Wangari's story is a testament to the power of determination and the profound love for one's community and the earth. Her legacy — championing the causes of women, the environment and future generations — continues to inspire and remind us of the difference one person can make.

After a crazy few years for the housing market, everybody wonders, "What's this year going to be like?" Is it a buyer's market? Is it a seller's market? Will prices come down? Here are three national predictions that might help answer your questions.

Will Home Prices Come Down?

One of the biggest questions I get is about prices. Many are wondering if and when they'll come down. Much of this concerns inventory or the number of homes on the market. Which is still low, so for now, home prices are predicted to stay up and increase this year.

What About Mortgage Rates?

Mortgage rates steadied and dropped slightly at the end of the year. Although they may dip a bit throughout the year, mortgage rates are expected to stay higher than in the last few years. This will likely be the case until the federal government meets its inflation goal.

Will Buyers or Sellers Have an Advantage?

With high mortgage rates, low inventory, and higher prices, it will remain a seller's market in 2024. There are more buyers than homes on the market.
