First episode of a new show – the anticipation!
The show opens with Piper Chapman, the main character, in a montage of bathing and showering, saying how she loves to be clean. You can tell this isn’t a mainstream show as the nipple count hits 8 within a few seconds – and not only that, a girl on girl shower scene. Hmm. That does nothing for me, even if one is Laura Prepon. Has she always been that tall or is Taylor Schilling tiny?
I digress. Pipe is off to prison and we see her getting ready to go – by eating a pig, touching love scenes with her fiance – a very understated Jason Biggs. Counting down until he cheats on his sweetheart.
Its bound to happen, Piper
We find out Piper carried drug money for her ex-lover Alex (Laura Prepon). She gets processed into the prison, interspersed with a flashback of more lesbian making out. If I close one eye and just look at Alex, that almost works ok. It looks more and more like Piper was manipulated into carrying the money by her ne’er do well girlfriend, who turned her in 10 years on to mitigate her own sentence. Larry, her fiance, takes the news far too well – he’s definitely cheating later on.
Piper starts to see the workings of the prison and meets her cell mates. Although non of it is exactly pleasant, its not that bad. Then Kate Mulgrew appears, as ‘Red’, and my interest spikes. Anything with her in it is something I’ll watch. Piper gets off a bad start by slating the food, and Red runs the kitchen. More unpleasant experiences follow, a creepy guard, lesbian sex in the showers (again). Piper was just watched as she passed through, but it seems inevitable she’s going to get involved with this at some point.
Her earlier run in with Red bites her in the ass later as Red specially makes a sandwich made up with a used sanitary product. Suddenly the whole experience is too much for her – she dashes out to recover by the trash. And her ex, Alex, wanders up to say hi. Thank God, a chance at some drama! The episode ends.
Overall, its a bit uneven so far. Lots of setting up characters, a few funny spots, hopefully ep 2 starts in with less setup and more content.
