Kalahari Cliffs Camp

Kalahari Cliffs is the name of a magnificent stretch of rocky mountainsides with a 1km river frontage on the edge of the red desert. It is about 7km from Kakamas on the N14 national road from Upington to the West Coast and only 35km from Augrabies Falls.

On the farm are the ruins of the 1914-15 forts built by Boer rebels and Namibian Germans opposing South Africa’s entry into World War 1 on the side of the British. The so-called Maritz “tickey rebellion” was finally suppressed in this area.

Also on the property are the historic “water tunnels” which are regarded as national heritage. Dug by Cornish miners more than 100 years ago, the tunnels carry the irrigation furrow from a major weir upstream through the mountains to the vineyards below.

Kalahari Cliffs is a portion of the old farm called Baviaanskranz (Baboon Cliffs). The distinctive red granite on the farm gives its name to a class of the rock called Baviaanskranz granite. Just upstream of us is the Neus Gorge, and this provides a great half-day run through an amazing

We have a few vineyards at the base camp itself, so pop in during February! It’s a short drive in and soon you are breathing the fine air slightly scented by the musty reeds flanking the Orange below. Tents are set with spectacular views of the river and surrounding country. There is a beautiful grassy patch for campers and caravaners, and another rustic campsite set in the hills looking towards Neus gorge. Take a dip in the river or walk along the irrigation canal which winds through the hills.

From base, we may venture out for half-day rafting and canoeing trips, or go flyfishing, mountain biking and hiking in the rugged hills. We also use this as the marshalling point for longer trips downriver. Our local representative, Craig Eksteen, runs whitewater rafting and canoeing trips on the Orange, ranging from a morning to several days. See the Orange River photo galleries. He also conducts Kalahari safaris. He can tell you about the area and point you in the direction of must-visit places like the Riemvasmaak hot springs.

How do I get to Kalahari Cliffs ?

The turnoff is approx 6km on the tarred road to Upington, half a km past the Vergelegen Restaurant on the other side of the road. The track to the farm is suitable for any car. Go through a gate and turn sharp left, follow the road and turn left next to the palm trees. Cross the furrow and look out for the entrance to Mr Peet Viljoen’s farm. He is the current owner (we are leasing and will subdivide in order to own). I will send you his phone number by email. Go in and introduce yourself. He will show you the way and probably join you with the key to open the gate. The campsite is very comfortable with grass and trees. There is no drinking water and there are no ablutions or any other facilities. You may swim in the canal or in the river. Walk up to the top of the mountain behind for spectacular views of the river and surrounding country. Visit Riemvasmaak – a day trip which does require a fairly rugged vehicle.

Zambezi 3 Day River Rafting from 350US$D per person

This unique “3 Day – 2 Night” White Water Rafting option has been designed to cater specifically for clients looking to experience both the adrenalin rush and sheer power of the mighty Zambezi River whilst also allowing for that all important time to take a closer look at the splendor that is Mosi-Oa-Tunya “The Smoke That Thunders”.

The Zambezi River is classified as a high volume; pool-drop River i.e. there is little exposed rock either in the rapids or the pools below the rapids. The distance between rapids varies from 100 meters to 2 km. The Gorge itself is approximately 400ft deep at the put-in point and 750ft at the take out point. The river drops about 400ft over the 24km covered in this two – day rafting trip and the depth of the river can reach 200ft. Day 1 on the river is classified as Grade 5 “extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, big drops and pressure areas”. Whilst Day 2 is slightly less challenging and is of a lower grade

Day 1

Pick up from your Livingstone accommodation is at 09h30

Personal belongings required for the camp to be deposited with the Trip Leader

Initial “Safety Brief” & Equipment introduction

Transfer to Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorge

Upon arrival at the Batoka Gorge clients are divided into Rafting Crews before commencing the walk down the gorge – this has a gradient of 1 in 3, and a person of average fitness can manage this in approximately 15 minutes.

On reaching the bottom of the Gorge all equipment is then checked again before an “in boat” safety brief is given, only then when everybody is comfortable and happy does your journey beneath “The Smoke that Thunders” begin.

After a short paddle we reach our first portage of the day before joining our rafts again to paddle below the mighty Victoria Falls. Known locally as the “Minus Rapids” and due to time constraints not normally visited by the commercial “One Day” rafting trips this experience is second to none, visited by few it is undoubtedly one of the most dramatic spots you will encounter. Here we have time to explore the surroundings, enjoy a light lunch, before packing up to experience the sheer thrill and adrenalin rush of what is the best white water rafting the world has to offer.

En route to our Overnight camp at rapid #10 you will be tested by class 3 – 5 rapids with names such as “Morning Glory”, “Stairway to Heaven”, “The Devils Toilet Bowl” and the “Mighty Muncher” before our second portage of the day around the class 6 rapid #9.

Arrival in camp at rapid #10 brings a well-earned rest, with plenty of time to chill out over a nice cool beer and reminisce on what will have been an adrenalin pumped day. As the light begins to fade and the aroma of a freshly cooked dinner takes over the Batoka Gorge is all ours. (Included: Lunch and Dinner)

Day 2

As Africa awakes to the sounds of Fish Eagles eager to start the day, we are again in no hurry as time is on our side, this is another chance to capture the beauty that is the Batoka Gorge whilst enjoying a hearty freshly cooked breakfast with plenty of time for that extra cup of coffee!!

After breakfast its time to prepare our lunch for the day, pack up again ensuring we leave minimal trace of our overnight camp before continuing on our journey along the mighty Zambezi River.

The section of river covered today is a little less challenging than Day 1. Rapids tend to be a little more forgiving or so the river leads us to believe as the air of tranquility is soon broken by the sounds of the “Three Ugly Sisters” closely followed by the “Washing Machine”, “Terminator 1 and 2” and wait for it rapid #18 “Oblivion”.

Lunch today is a relaxed affair as we gently float downstream, en-route to our second night’s camp at rapid #21. It’s soon time to set your tent up, or even fall asleep on the beach beneath the stars for yet another unforgettable evening in the Batoka Gorge. (Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

Day 3

After another freshly cooked breakfast, and yes time again for that extra cup of coffee, we break camp, prepare lunch and set off to our final destination the stunning Lower Moemba Falls.

Some of the Zambezi’s best rapids are featured here today. ‘Open Season’, ‘The Narrows’

‘Chamamba Falls’ and ‘Upper Moemba’ to mention just a few. As the gorge opens up today we may get the chance to glimpse at some wildlife, such as crocodiles and klipspringers plus a vast array of birdlife.

Upon arrival at Moemba Falls we enjoy a relaxed lunch, whilst exploring this remote area, but like all good things it has to come to an end sometime, as its time to muster up all the energy we have left before we begin the 750ft hike out of the gorge. Salvation comes quickly in the form of Ice Cold Beers and soft drinks waiting at the top, and its time to rest, sit back and enjoy a true ‘Grade 5’ road which slowly winds its way back to our River Base at the Zambezi Waterfront. Our videographer will quickly begin the edit of our journey down the Zambezi whilst dinner is being served. Once completed we can view, purchase a copy, say goodbye to the team and the memories will last forever. (Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

This is a true reflection of adventure, adrenaline and the sheer beauty of the Batoka Gorge. Clearly suitable for the more adventurous travelers and visitors.

The Zambezi River is classified as a high volume, pool-drop River i.e. there is little exposed rock either in the rapids or the pools below the rapids. The distance between rapids varies from 100 meters to 2 kms. Whilst Day 2 is slightly less challenging and is of a lower grade and more relaxing.

How does this trip works.

Day 1

Pick up from your Livingstone accommodation is at 09h30

Personal belongings required for the camp to be deposited with the Trip Leader

Initial “Safety Brief”

Equipment Introduction

Transfer to the Victoria Falls and the Batoka Gorge

Day 2

As Africa awakes to the sounds of Fish Eagles eager to start the day, we are again in no hurry as time is on our side, this is another chance to capture the beauty that is the Batoka Gorge whilst enjoying a hearty freshly cooked breakfast with plenty of time for that extra cup of coffee.

After breakfast its time to prepare our lunch for the day, pack up again ensuring we leave minimal trace of our overnight camp before continuing on our journey along the mighty Zambezi River en-route to our take out point at rapid #25.

Lunch today is a relaxed affair as we gently float downstream en-route to our take out point at rapid #25 where a Gondola Cable Car will quickly whisk us up the 750ft to the top of the gorge, before we begin our 45 minute road transfer back through the villages that border the Batoka Gorge as it winds its way back to Livingstone.

Arriving back at our River Base at the Zambezi Waterfront our video grapher will quickly begin the edit of the journey down the Zambezi whilst dinner is being served. Once completed we can view, purchase a copy, say goodbye to the team and the memories will last forever. (Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner)

Transfer back to your Livingstone accommodation +/- 17h30
