At a time when Jesus’ physical family was trying to stop him, he identifies his true family. He identifies that family as those who are in proximity to him, having drawn near. But more than that, he identifies that family as those who do the will of His father.

The story of the division of Israel and Judah really begins during Solomon’s reign, when he turns away from the Lord and follows the gods of his many wives. The Lord promised to tear away the kingdom from Solomon’s son, a promise that was fulfilled soon after Rehoboam became king.

Tonight we were pleased to have Roy Knight for St. George, SC to continue our studies in the Sermon on the Mount. This week we enter into the section where Jesus gives a more perfect understanding of his will for his disciples, using the formula “You have heard that it was said…but I say to you.” In this week’s lesson we consider what Jesus says about anger, and how to keep it from overcoming us.

When Babylon falls, it will be felt. In Revelation 18, those who had benefited from Babylon lament her destruction, but do not come to her aid. God’s judgement is certain, and as the scene changes, the heavens rejoice in Babylon’s fall.

Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son is well known, and the father in that story can be an example to us. He reflects our Father in heaven, but also the kind of people that we should be, especially if we are fathers or any kind of leader.

David’s decision to take a census of Israel was a matter of pride. Rather than trust in God, he was looking to trust in the number of soldiers in his army. Displeasing God, he was made to choose a punishment for Israel, but was also shown mercy when he acknowledged his guilt.
