O meglio ancora, compratevi i suoi dischi.

He is one of those guys who are holding the future of songwriting, the kind of music that gave Italy artists such as, among the others, Rino Gaetano, Fabrizio De André, Lucio Battisti, Piero Ciampi. We’re talking about Dente, born Giuseppe Peveri, 35 year-old author from Fidenza (Parma), which in this period is touring Italy with a successful tour, also recently came to the Palladium in Rome. The intimacy of the Capitoline theater possibly made the lyrics by Dente even more surreal and poignant, the ones from the latest album “L’amore non è bello” (Love is not beautiful) sort of concept about romantic disappointment, voted as the best album of the decade from a survey on the site of the Corriere della Sera newspaper, but even older, as these may be those of a musician who began publishing just in 2006.

The Peveri’s songs are almost all told in the form of nursery rhymes, but they’re not limited to pure nonsense, come instead to the heart with lyrics very intimate and “touch” both the soul and thoughts, especially the younger people’s ones who are in fact its first listeners and many flocked to the theater. A bit ‘in the manner of Nick Drake and Elliott Smith, more or less recent geniuses of the past to which has been compared: Dente is dreamy, very ironic, he seems to be lazy but his acoustic guitar and his band (bass, piano, drums) released great energy, as a good Emilian makes some jokes on the passion for wine, and converses with the audience. He seems like a post-television and Facebook era Guccini, and make a series of jokes mentioning any famous people very famous for thirty year-old who have lived in symbiosis with the TV and then maybe has distanced themselves when mature (we are more than you might believe).

But beyond all the talk, Dente is above all a great songwriter: sweet, light, full of great but simply lyrics, such as “what beautiful eyes you have, I wonder how you see me good”, or “I like her and she’s being liked by me, and I’d want that she saw me, that she’d thought exactly like me. ” Songs that are deeply rooted in Italian tradition, as “Building Baby,” “”La battaglia delle bande”,”La presunta santità di Irene”, “Vieni a vivere” and the amazing “Chiedo”, to name a few, but with an indie pop filter that makes it totally contemporary. Like a Battisti who was born near the Po, 35 years old now and had heard a lot of Beck. In short, if the references I quoted inspired you the least, go watch him when he’s passing in your city. Or better yet, buy his records. Maybe after some listening test from your site. As a good thirty-year-old contemporary guy he has three or four, on each of which you can hear some songs.

Record’s auction for the lyrics that John Lennon had written for the song “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles. It’s a simple sheet of paper on which both sides Lennon had written the draft text of the famous song. It will be auctioned in New York on June 18 and should be sold for a figure around 700 thousand dollars. The final track of the album Sgt, Pepper, winner of four Grammy Awards released in 1967, according to the special list published by the Rolling Stone magazine is the 26th in the ranking of the 500 greatest songs of all time. The BBC at the time had ceased to transmit the song because the phrase “I’d like to turn you on” was interpreted as a reference to drug use, the same reason why in many Asian countries was published a version of the album that did not contain the last track.

The lyrics will be put on the market by the auction house Sotheby’s, which called “A Day in the Life” a piece “that marked the revolutionary transformation of the Beatles from pop icons to artists, although “A Dai in the life” is unlikely to break the record achieved for a auction of this kind, currently held by the “All you need is love” by the same Beatles, sold for one million dollars in 2005. It demonstes that a myth continues to exist around the most famous pop group, although probably Lennon wouldn’t be so happy to know that his work is sold for a figure which could remove many people from poverty or be used for a good social purpose or to promote peace.

Have you had the rock’n roll demon inside you, but now records and concerts aren’t enough anymore? You dreamed for a lifetime of playing live and recording in studio with your rock idols? Then you are surely interested in the invitation that I received today by e-mail for taking part to the Rock’n Roll Fantasy Camp which will be held between the 25 and 30 of May in London and Liverpool.
You’ll have the chance to go to the Abbey Road studios, the ones where the Beatles recorded many of their masterpieces, and you can play in that Cavern Club that in 1961 was the first trampoline of the most Popular “cockroaches” in music history.

The previous editions of the camp were attended by genuine legends of rock history as the first Beatles drummer, Pete Best, Todd Rundgren, the guitarist from Guns N ‘Roses and Velvet Revolver, Slash, the amazing Jeff Back, the Cream bassist Jack Bruce, Bill Wyman from the Rolling Stones and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd. Mason and Bruce will be among the protagonists also this year, and if you participate at the event held in the Memorial Day weekend you can make a jam with them, playing hits such as Sunshine of Your Love or Wish you were here.

What is the cost of such an experience? Nearly 11 thousand dollars, but if you can afford is one of the ones you make once in a lifetime. You’ll meet the legendary Sir George Martin, manager of the study where in 1962 was recorded “Love Me Do”, eat with the giants of music, you will play with them 10 hours a day, until the climax on the evening of 30 when you’ll tread the boards stage of the Cavern, as did before you the Stones, the Yardbirds, the Kinks, Elton John, the Who and John Lee Hooker. As a memory, you’ll have a CD with your recording studio sessions and if you are particularly good, maybe a call from one of the great British record managers who are always looking for talent. What else could you want, if you are rock fans? You just check and see if in the last cold winter you saved enough to go and play with your favorite stars!

Tutto vero, certo.

One of the most frequent charges against rock music, punk and pop are about the similarity between musical pieces. Not to mention electronics, always accused of being music that is played with a finger or two, those which are needed to press the buttons on the synth or the sampler. Anyone who enjoys the popular and modern songs – of any style – has always rejected these clichés but basically, deep down, we always knew that they contain some truth. The best songs by Elvis Presley, the Beatles or the Sex Pistols have been written with three to four chords, although many of their fans probably do not realize it, and that’s good.

The video of the Australian comedians Axis Of Awesome make it quite clear, when during five minutes of pure delirium they always play the same four chords – strictly in the same order – going through forty years of history of more or less commercial pop. There are classics like the same Beatles and Elton John, alternative rock stars such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, new songwriters like James Blunt, star of ’90s punk like Offspring and Green Day, popstars of the ’80s as the Finnish A – ha and Toto, absolute superstars such as U2 and Bob Marley, but also Journey, Alphaville, Jason Mraz, Mika, Alex Lloyd, The Calling, Maroon 5, The Last Goodnight, Crowded House, Kasey Chambers, Men at work, Eagle Eye Cherry, Beyonce, Pink, Lady Gaga, Aqua, MGMT, Tim Minchin, Missy Higgins and Natalie Imbruglia.

But this law seems to apply only to the pure pop, as I can’t see there, for example, Nick Cave or Tom Waits, and not even Radiohead and the Stones. Anyway, even if they were, the fact that they used just four chords doesn’t alter the taste of their great songs. The black fathers of American blues, from which was born the rock, pop and everything else in music, were used to always play the same three chords, and they created the modern music. I guess it’s enough.
