Organization is a challenge in any setting, but it can be specifically challenging if you are living in a small space. These 5 tips will give you some ideas for maximizing space in your home, so it is easier to keep it de-cluttered. Organization can increase your productivity if you are working from home as an employee or student and can ultimately decrease your stress in crunch time.

1. Designate Task Areas in Your Home

Designate areas specifically for eating, sleeping, working, and playing. It you are working from home, or attending university, make sure you do important work at a desk, instead of on the couch or at the dining room table.

Mixing up these areas can cause you to lose concentration if you are working, or cause you stress while you are trying to sleep. If you consistently use the same area for the same task, your brain will automatically be on the right task when you go to that area.

2. Create an Organized Filing System

Designate file folders for bills and other important papers, and label the dividers for easy filing. Papers can easily get lost in a pile, so make an effort to file them right away in their correct divider, and it will be easier to quickly refer to these. Alphabetize a small business card binder to store all your important contacts so they are easy to find and do not clutter up counters, drawers, and wallets.

3. Choose Dual-Purpose Furniture for Storage

Choose furniture that has an optional storage component, such as bins that slide under your bed, or an ottoman that opens for storage. Use these for items such as extra blankets or linens you may need when guests sleep overnight on the couch.

Choose coffee and side tables and entertainment units that have cupboards or shelves underneath them. These are great for storing movies, books and magazines, or CDs, instead of having a separate DVD stand, bookshelf, or CD case.

4. Designate Specific Places for Essentials

If you do not have a consistent spot to put your keys or cell phone, it's easy to misplace them. Organizing expert, Pam Socolow says that, "If you are forever misplacing your car keys, create a home for them." Have a key hanger right beside your door, and a stylish dish near your entrance for your cell phone or iPod.

Some items that you do not use as often, such as cameras or camcorders, and all their charging cords are also easy to misplace. Have a bin specifically for electronics, put a noticeable label on it, and store it near your desk or office area with other electronics.

5. Sort and Clean House Once a Year

It's easy to let things pile up in closets, bins, or cupboards, so plan a specific time to go through these areas. Get rid of linens you will never use, clothes you no longer wear, and plastic containers with no lids. Plan to complete one area at a time to avoid being overwhelmed.

Parenting magazine encourages people to set aside items still in good condition, and "Give it to a friend, donate it to a charity, or sell it to a secondhand shop." Make sure to donate, re-gift, and recycle as many things as possible before throwing items in the trash.

This summer, use your leftover greens to better the environment and your garden. Compost is organic material made up of scraps from your vegetable stems and plant debris laying around your yard and garden. Compost breaks down into nutrient-rich matter that is plant fertilizer that can feed your garden and help you cut down on waste.

How Can I Make A Composter?

Making your own composter is easy if you follow these steps.

Get a plastic bin with a lid that is at least 18 gallons .
Drill holes in the sides and lid of bin in order to get air circulating; this will help to break down your compost.
Line the bin with wire mesh to keep out any rodents.
Place your bin in an easily accessible spot. Outside your kitchen window allows you to easily toss your kitchen scraps out of the window and into the bin.

Using a Small Composter

As you are working with a small-scale composter, chopping or putting materials through a food processor is going to be crucial for getting the most out of your small composter. This way material will breakdown more quickly.

Adding dry leaves from the yard will help reduce the smell of your compost. Also, you should make sure that every day or so you are stirring or shaking the bin. Your compost should be ready to put into the garden in 3-6 months. Use a sifter in order to separate the bigger pieces that are not yet ready for distribution.

Buying a Composter

Consider the following when choosing a composter:

Size: A smaller composter will take longer to break down the materials.
Weight: You should be able to lift it in order to turn and sift the materials.
Height: You shouldn't be bending over or reaching.
Assembly Required: Bins with plastic joints don't last as long.
Lids: A lid with a large compartment on the top is ideal when adding more materials to the bin.
Pest Deterrents: Make sure the lid seals so that animals and pests don't get in.
Access Panels: Some composters have a panel on the bottom so that the finished material can be easily removed.
Aeration and Drainage Holes: Yu need these to let air and water in so that the materials will breakdown.

Ecofeminists Use Recycled/Natural Materials

Earthen, Natural building or "Cob" are all adjectives to describe a mode of construction that uses an organic mixture of sand, clay, straw and water to create an artistic, sculptural and green living space.

Although the method goes back to the 11th century in Middle East, the UK (Wales, Devon, Cornwall), and France (Brittany), Vancouver Island's MudGirls have proven that that the natural and environmentally-friendly building practice still has a place in modern society.

The non-hierarchical, women's collective first began in 2005 when 22 women went on a Lasqueti Island retreat. During their retreat, they taught each other cob building and developed a business plan to expand their passion for local natural building and to empower themselves and others, "through sharing skills and knowledge that promotes healing and living in harmony with the Earth."

Cob Homes Durable and EcoEfficient

The ecofeminist group specializes in building with cob, as well as other natural material such as driftwood, cord wood, and recycled materials like glass bottles, car tires etc. In an interview with Synergy Magazine. Chelsey Braham, spokesperson for the MudGirls says, the goal is to build structures that "please the eye, the heart, the wallet and the earth."

The unprocessed and recycled materials do not harm the earth and eliminate excessive building materials and volatile organic compounds or VOCs. Another principal of natural building is using what is locally available. This cuts out costs and waste associated with transporting long distances and burning fossil fuels.

Wattle & Daub Walls for Cob Homes

Wattle is a woven lattice of wooden strips that are daubed with a sticky material made of wet soil, clay, sand, animal dung and straw. Daub is created from binders, aggregates and reinforcement. Binders hold the mix together and can include clay, lime, chalk dust and limestone dust. Aggregates give the mix its bulk and dimensional stability through materials such as earth, sand, crushed chalk and crushed stone. Reinforcement is provided by straw, hair, hay or other fibrous materials, and helps to hold the mix together as well as to control shrinkage and provide flexibility.

The daub may be mixed by hand, or by treading either by humans or livestock. It is then applied to the wattle and allowed to dry, and often then whitewashed to increase its resistance to rain. Wattle-and-daub walls have been proven to be as sturdy as framed drywall or brick and is almost as hard as concrete when it's mixed in the proper ratio, plus it lasts a hundred years longer than most wooden construction. In fact some of the longest surviving man-made buildings are made from rammed earth!

The ecostructure is built to last a long time, but, if and when it does bio-degrade, it does so in a graceful way, with all the materials going back into the earth. This is called cradle to cradle.The cob houses have held up against the wet island weather, Braham says, "Cob makes wonderful, cozy, energy efficient homes. Living in a cob home is cool in the summer and warm in the winter and a gift to the soul all year round.".

MudGirls Empower Women to Build Their Own Homes

For Braham and many other MudGirls, it's not only about the environment, but also about going beyond traditional gender stereotypes. The network is also about realizing and proving a woman's capabilities. "I had a realization that I could create my own way of building a home. I realized that I have the skills. It has a lot to do with self esteem for women."

The MudGirls range in age from 20-60 and come from an eclectic mix of professions and backgrounds. Braham states on the MudGirls website, "Our aim is to stop harming and start healing the earth and ourselves."

Although the MudGirls' building projects span Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, they share a common mandate to "Bring cob into the city." Emails from businesses on the mainland have flooded in recently. The inspired women hope to create their first structure in Vancouver as early as next year.

JC is a 23-year-old first time home buyer. He recently purchased a two-bedroom condo in South-east Calgary, Alberta and had to make a number of decisions to weigh the pros and cons of buying versus continuing to rent, from assessing the market to budgeting for real estate costs.

Home Mortgage Payments vs Rent

Evaluate if buying a home is feasible. JC made sure that he could meet the responsibilities of a mortgage while maintaining a reasonable quality of life. Paying a mortgage is close to, or sometimes cheaper than, paying rent. You can't go wrong when investing in real estate (as long as you buy/sell at the right time, of course).

Mortgage brokers and bank loan officials will need to see the following to assess your eligibility for a mortgage and its size, rates, and terms:

3 months of bank statements
2 pieces of government-iissued ID
a letter of employment (no probation)
statement of salary to cover the mortgage requirements

As a first time buyer, JC needed a minimum of 5% of the purchase price plus closing costs (usually 1.5% of purchase price) and a reserve fund, in case of any costs associated with mortgage brokers and realtors.

Choosing a Home Realtor

JC found out how long his realtor had been in the business and how well he knew the city and local areas. Generally speaking, realtors work on referrals, so start by asking those you know who own in the city who they used and why they would recommend them.

This often comes down to personality, responsiveness, patience, attention to detail and procedure over the hard sell, and appreciation of unique needs and timelines. JC let his realtor know that he was not interested in buying condos in the basement (dark and damp) or top floors (if the roof leaks you are the first to be affected.) so he didn't waste any time.

Realtors should drive you to locations, have all the details of the property in hand, be able to negotiate price and closing dates effectively, and should welcome you into your new home on the day you take ownership.

Assessing a Home Property

Once you know what you can afford, consider various neighbourhoods in the city by assessing their access to your work, public transit, schools, and recreation and shopping facilities. Look at location and development potential as these elements are crucial for resale or renting out the property in the future.

In the current climate, some new home buyers are investigating foreclosed property or privately-owned properties for sale to keep house and realtor costs down. When buying any home, you should know what the previous owner paid for the home and the mortgage rates at the time.

Consider the age of the building, appliances and its overall maintenance. Also, if a condo, look at the condo reserve fund and make sure that it is able to handle any planned or unexpected repairs.

Home Inspection, Legal Fee & Insurance

An inspection is money well spent, but be prepared to pay $400-600. Lawyers fees vary depending on where you live and the lawyer you hire, but should come in between $700 - $1500. Update your insurance policy so coverage begins on your new home and property upon closing. Your lawyer also needs a copy of the policy before closing.

A professional review the condominium documents is a must and costs approximately $350. Make sure you are aware of the condo rules and regulations before you purchase, especially if you plan on doing renovations. Some boards won't allow hardwood flooring or any kind of personalization of the exterior of your property. There may also be restrictions on having a house pet.

Duration from Home Mortgage Approval to Close

From the time your mortgage is approved and you've found a property you like it can take between 1-2 months to close. JC plans to renovate his property and pay off the mortgage within the next five years, then rent out the condo and move onto his next investment.

High Yield Urban Food Production on Less Land

Urban sprawl continues to wreak havoc on resource management in cities and urban areas. Rising gas prices remind us once again of the costs of transporting food into our cities. In the midst of these strains, a "new old" horticultural method is gaining traction: vertical farms.

Centralized Food Production for Cities

Resembling tower-like greenhouses in most blueprints and design mockups, vertical farms are designed to minimize the space needed to grow food for large populations, as well as to help centralize a city's source of food.

The concept became popular in the 1950s and refers to a method of "stacking" agricultural production and cultivation within large-scale structures, particularly skyscrapers. A viral video by one of vertical farming's greatest proponents, Dickson Despommier, explains many of the concepts that go along with this innovative new form of husbandry.

Advantages of Vertical Farms

Vertical farms are increasing popular in light of increased population, the need for energy and resource efficiency, and growing environmental concerns.

Building Resilience: As the Swedish urban architecture firm Plantagon states, up to 80% of the Earth's population will reside in cities by 2050, and there will be approximately 2 billion more of us then than there is now. In their words, "an effective land-use solution that embraces the market and the infrastructure is the only solution."
Increased Organic Crops:The controlled environment of a vertical farm translates to less pesticide use, meaning organic food could eventually become the norm.
Conservation of Resources: In a vertical farm, all energy input and output can be easily tracked, leading to exponentially better resource management. The urban location reduces demand on rural or outlying farmlands, allowing these areas - currently the leading cause of deforestation and desertification around the world - to be naturally remediated, restoring ecosystems and habitats for flora and fauna.

Disadvantages of Vertical Farms

Of course, increased costs associated with the introduction of any new technology, are one deterrent here.

Upfront Cost: Vertical farms will initially be costly but beyond this upfront investment, they will begin to yield dividends that will pay back the investment once amortized over the life of the farm.
Energy Demands: Vertical farms cannot receive direct exposure to the sun in the same way fields can, and therefore require both adaptive design and supplementary light - which, as we see above, might cost cost a significant amount.
Pollution: Despite the benefits of a controlled environment and reduced reliance on pesticides, critics raise the point that greenhouse carbon dioxide emissions are often greater than field emissions, due to some growers using them as adjuncts for increasing yield

With the already over-burdened healthcare system and associated costs, many children of senior parents are opting to keep their parents in their own home for as long as possible, but 60% of all injuries reported by seniors occur in the home and surrounding area. The following tips will keep seniors safe in their own homes.

Altering Home Interiors for Senior Safety

Many seniors aren't mobile or may be disabled in some way, so home interiors should be as hazard-free as possible.

Sufficient lighting removal of all loose rugs will reduce the chance of tripping.
Adding electrical outlets will avoid the need for extension cords, which can be both a tripping and a fire hazard.
Install a higher toilet for easier mobility and curbless shower stall with a bench or seat and grab bars in case of slipping.
In the kitchen, make sure that the counters, stove and sink are all at the same level and flat. This makes for easier cleaning and pots can be easily slid off the stove instead of lifting.
Make sure all cupboards are at waist level, to avoid crouching or the need for stools.
Switch all door knobs in the house to lever handles that use the whole hand instead of arthritic fingers.

Senior-Proofing Home Exteriors

The home exterior is also a potential concern for seniors traversing the grounds.

Make sure that all walkways are in good condition and clear of loose stones, sticks, tiles or other tripping hazards.
Steps should be in good condition and non-slip ramps with rails can also be installed.
All shrubs, trees, and hedges should be trimmed to avoid blocking the view from the street.
House numbers should be easily read from the street in case of emergencies.
Install motion sensor lighting around the whole house to dissuade predators and make it easier to walk around outside in the evening.

There are other safety improvements to consider and review when visiting; if you don't live in the same area, have a neighbour look in on senior parents or hire a reliable handyperson to maintain these features.

Pinterest Invite-Only Model

Pinterest is currently invite-only, but you can request an invite from the website or you can be invited by someone who is already a part of Pinterest. When you receive your invite, you can register using Facebook Connect or Twitter.

There are three key actions that adopt Pinterest terminology found in their glossary: Pin, Board and Following.

Pin : A pin is an image added to Pinterest from another Website you visit or uploaded from your computer.

Clean w/ Soda, Lemons, Vinegar, Coffee Filter

Your kitchen cupboard is full of items that could potentially be put to other uses. To use these items to their full potential, follow the tips below.

Baking Soda

Without Toothpaste? Just add water and use the baking soda paste as toothpaste.
Erase crayon, pencil, ink, and furniture scuffs from painted surfaces. Just sprinkle soda on a damp sponge, rub clean, and rinse.
Open a pack and put in a fridge or sprinkle some at the bottom of garbage cans to help with nasty odors.

Lemons

Want to brighten your light laundry? Just put about a 1/2 cup of lemon juice into a normal load.
An easy way to get soft cheese and other substances off a grater is to rub both sides with the pulp side of a cut lemon.
Sanitize a cutting board by rubbing a slice over the surface to disinfect.

Vinegar (White)

Add extra shine and reduce the likelihood of oily hair by adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1 cup of water and rinsing.
To stop itching from bug bites, soak a cloth in vinegar and put it over the infected area.
Ever have price tags or stickers that wont go away? Rub vinegar over the area and let sit, then wipe.

Coffee Filters

For a softer look for your photographs, place a coffee filter over the flash and it will diffuse the light.
For your gardening in the spring turn to coffee filters to help your repotting. Place the filter in the bottom of the pot over the drainage holes and put the soil in the pot.

Newspaper

If you don't have any paper towel for cleaning the windows, use newspaper to remove nasty streaks. It will not leave any lint on the windows; coffee filters also work.
If you need a quick way to ripen your tomatoes, just wrap them individually in newspaper and leave them out at room temperature.
For packing delicate items, newspaper is a great buffer and can help to avoid breakage.
Newspaper is an environmentally friendly way to wrap gifts.

Dryer Sheets

If your shoes are smelly, just insert a drying sheet in each one. This also works in gym bags and suitcases. To make books less musty, put them between the pages.
Remove nasty static from televisions, clothing, hair, and computer monitors; wipe any of these surfaces with a sheet.
To get really fine debris such as dust and sawdust out of a workshop, just run the dryer sheet over the surface and it will pick up the fine pieces.

How do Flowers Naturally Change Colour?

Flowers naturally loose water from their leaves and thus water is pulled up from the roots through tiny internal stems; this replaces moisture that has evaporated from the leaves. This is called transpiration. In flowers such as roses and daffodils, the transpiration is much quicker and noticeable, which is why they are the chosen flower for this craft.

Ever since St. Valentine risked his life to marry couples in 269 A.D, February 14 has been known as Valentine's Day. This date celebrates love and kindness and invites us to show it on this day especially, to our partner, friends, and family. In order to do this, many give gifts. In ancient mythology, it is believed that Eros was the God of Love; eros transposed spells the word rose.

If that isn't reason enough, who wouldn't want to get a beautiful rose on Valentine's Day, especially a rainbow one?

Johnathan Adler cited "fashion" as one of his main inspirations in the latest issue of Style at Home. Myrtel Beach local Julie, of Knotting Hill Interiors reported on the interior design blog Belle Maison that her latest office design was inspired by a colorful dress seen on the February cover of French Vogue. Extending the Product Life of Technical Gear

The cost of high-quality technical outdoor jacket reflects its durability, and performance, that is, how warm, dry, and comfortable you will be when wearing it.

Unfortunately care and maintenance of technical gear often falls by the wayside because people believe that the garment should not be washed or dried. Properly washing and maintaining your waterproof breathable shells and insulated jackets will extend the lifespan of your pieces.

Waterproof Breathable Shells

Waterproof breathable shells require regular washing and drying in order to maintain their breathability and water repellency. Waterproof fabrics are comprised of two major components: the waterproof membrane on the inside of the jacket, and a Durable Water Repellency (DWR) saturated face fabric. The most commonly known waterproof breathable membranes are Gore-Tex and eVent, both of which require regular washing and reproofing.

When a jacket is new the DWR on the outside of the face fabric makes water bead up into droplets and roll off the fabric. Over time the DWR coating will breakdown causing water to sit on the surface of the fabric. As water pools on the surface of your waterproof jacket the breathability is compromised and your body heat and sweat cannot evaporate.

In order to avoid this, waterproof breathable shell pieces should be washed seasonally in a regular washing machine using a non-detergent based cleaner such as Zero, Woolite, Nikwax, or Grangers. Heavy detergents found in traditional laundry soaps clog the pores of the fabric compromising breathability.

If you have noticed that your jacket is pooling water badly you should reproof your garment after washing it with either a spray-on or wash-in reproofing agent. Spray-ons work best in high-abrasion areas such the tops of the shoulders where backpack straps sit. Nikwax and Grangers are the most commonly known reproofing agents. Be sure to dry it in a dryer on a medium heat setting.

DWR is a compound that will be activated by the heat of your dryer. Waterproof membranes are manufactured at such a high temperature that you don't need to worry about your dryer damaging the fabrics.

Washing and Drying Down or Synthetic Jackets

Insulation pieces are made with either down or synthetic fill. In dry, cold weather down is warmer; synthetic insulation is preferable in damp climates. Synthetic pieces take washing better; down should be washed minimally and very carefully.

The instructions for washing a jacket made with synthetic insulation are very similar to washing a waterproof shell. The garment should be washed using non detergent based cleaners, reproofed if necessary and then tumbled dry on a medium setting. Some insulations, such as PrimaLoft, are treated with DWR coatings to improve the water repellency.

Washing down jackets requires a little bit more care and attention. Cleaning agents should be down-specific or down-safe. The natural oils on the feathers are what maintain the loft of the down. Detergents and other non-down specific cleaners can damage these natural oils and the loft of your jacket.

Down can be washed on the gentlest cycle in front-loading washing machines, or basin-style top-loading machines that do not have agitator towers. Down should not be washed in machines with agitators as the washing cycle is too rough and can damage the delicate feathers.

Hand washing is also a good idea if you are worried that your washing machine is too rough for the down. Down should be tumbled dry on the lowest heat and gentlest cycle on your washing machine. In order to r fluff the down, add tennis balls to the dryer.

Choosing Paint, Prepping Walls, Buying Tools

While many people would rather take a trip to the dentist than take on a painting project, it doesn't have to be that way. Here are some helpful tips for a fun and successful paint job that will yield perfect walls with the mess, hassle and endless clean-up of amateur techniques.

Flat Eggshell for Walls and Semi-Gloss for Trim

First, choose your paint well. For interiors latex is almost always a better choice than oil. Ceiling paints are usually flat (no sheen) and are often labeled as such, while wall paints run the gamut from eggshell to semi-gloss. Eggshell is most commonly used on walls, while super durable semi-gloss is used more often on doors and trim, and is a little harder to work with.

Second, shop at a professional, paint-specific store, like General Paint or Benjamin Moore. They generally carry better products and the sales staff will be far more knowledgeable than staff at the big box stores. They also do a better job of matching or customizing colours and often have professional size vats and expert tools.

Choosing Painting Tools

Make a list of tools you will need before heading to the store. As well as the obvious brush, roller and tray, make sure to get drywall compound (for filling holes), a putty knife, and a fine sanding block, as well as drop sheets and an extension pole.

When choosing roller refills, you get what you pay for. Cheap refills are almost always poor quality and cost you far more in time than they save you in dollars. Semi-rough rollers will cover faster than semi-smooth or smooth, but they leave more paint on the wall, and therefore more texture. The benefit is that they are much, much faster.

Preparing to Paint: Sanding and Primer

Prepping a room for painting often takes longer than the painting itself, but keep in mind that good prep work ensures a faster and better result in the end. Use drywall compound to fill holes, and painter's caulk for any bigger gaps and cracks that could shift over time. Wash any grime off walls, and give them a quick sand. Sanding is important as it knocks off all the rough bits, and should be done between coats of paint as well.

Spot prime any holes you have filled, and if you are changing colour significantly, consider starting with a tinted primer. Consider also that dark colours are mixed with what is called a deep/clear base, which means rich colour but poor coverage. If you don't want to do eight or nine coats, start with a primer tinted to the same colour.

Skip the tape. Except for really tricky areas, you are usually better off cutting freehand and keeping a damp rag handy. Roll in long, whole strokes. Your last roll over an area should go the whole way to the top and then all the way to the bottom. If you stop or start halfway, it will show when the paint dries.

Correcting Paint Spills and Mistakes

Wipe up spills immediately, even if you are painting over old floors, etc. Paint has a way of travelling on shoes and ending up in inconceivable places. If you hit the ceiling with wall paint, don't despair. Do, however, resist the urge to wipe the paint off if you have a textured ceiling. Wiping will wash away the texture, and you will be left with a much bigger mess.

Lastly, the million dollar tip: methyl hydrate gets latex paint out of carpets and off couches. Always spot test to be sure it won't have unintended effects, and then breathe a sigh of relief as your disaster melts away.

Doing an annual safety check in your home ensures you are able to take on the most medical situations and may preempt or minimize home emergencies in the future. Choosing an annual date on which to perform these checks that you will remember year after year is step one. If you want to do this twice a year aligning it with the time changes when you check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is also a good idea.

1. Check Your First Aid and CPR Certificates

First Aid and CPR certificates expire. Compared to other certifications they have a fairly short life span. By checking your certifications annually you are reminded when they expire. Depending on where you are, course offerings may be infrequent so it is good to start looking for course dates well in advance of the expiration of your certificate, particularly if your course is a requirement for your work.

Certifications have short life spans because the skills are practical and need to be reinforced and because methods change. If you haven't taken a basic First Aid course in a few years it may surprise you to hear that back-blows have been integrated into the procedure for helping a choking person. After decades of being told again and again to never strike a choking person on the back, courses now instruct back-blows in addition to abdominal thrusts to dislodge an airway obstruction.

In recent years the procedure for chest compressions for infant CPR has changed as well. Instructions on how to use Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been integrated into many courses. Because First Aid skills are so practical and hands-on, be wary of completely online course offerings. Many courses have online resources or online coursework but lifesaving skills should always be taught in person.

2. Check your Medicine Cabinet and Survival Kit

Often medicines and supplements expire before they are used up. Checking expiration dates can prevent hassles like only having expired antihistamines in the house when an allergy strikes. This is especially important in child products, like child decongestants or fever suppressants. After you've cleansed your medicine cabinet, poke through your First Aid kit and see what is running low or in need of replacing.

If you live in an area where it is good to have a survival kit, such as on a fault line or an area only accessible by one roadway, check that too. At the very least you should have enough supplies to maintain your family for 72 hours without outside help. Water purification tablets and droplets do have an expiration date, if those are integrated into your kit be sure to make sure they are still within date.

3. Rehearse Emergency Plans

Remind yourself and your family what you will do in case of an emergency. Make sure your fire escape routes are still accessible. Make sure each member of your family knows your meeting spot. Fluorescent Bulbs Reduce Hydro Consumption

When replacing light bulbs in your home, there are a number of ways to reduce energy bills as well as your carbon footprint. The two major bulb types for residential fixtures are incandescent and fluorescent; consider these pros and cons before deciding what to buy for your home.

Incandescent Lightbulbs

Incandescent bulbs are most frequently used in the home because they are inexpensive, but are very inefficient and have a relatively short life. About 95% of the energy put into an incandescent lightbulb is lost as heat. In summer months this creates excess heat we combat by using fans and air conditioning that consume more energy.

What most people really like about incandescent bulbs, however, is the pleasant, warm light they give off. Energy considerations aside, they provide excellent light quality for the home.

Fluorescent Lightbulbs

Fluorescent bulbs are increasingly being used in place of standard incandescent bulbs because of their superior efficiency. They waste significantly less energy, and last much longer.

Although the bulbs themselves cost about six times more than incandescent bulbs, they last anywhere from six to fifteen times as long and will reduce energy bills - saving the consumer around $30 over the lifetime of the bulb.

Mercury Concerns

Many people worry about the impact fluorescent bulbs have on the environment because they contain mercury. However, most fluorescent manufacturers provide take-back programs in order to ensure they are safely processed after use to prevent their mercury content from affecting the environment.

Indirectly, use of incandescent bulbs actually puts much more mercury into the environment than fluorescent. This is because incandescent bulbs use so much more energy than fluorescent. Most of the time, the source of this energy is the burning of fossil fuels like coal, which is one of the highest emitters of mercury into the environment.

Light Quality

For most people, the hardest part about switching to fluorescent is the difference in light quality. Typically, when people picture fluorescent light, they see a very cold, almost bluish, light. Many consumers don't realize that fluorescent bulbs come in a wide variety of colour temperatures (the colour of the light.)

In the past, warmer options have resulted in an artificial, orange tone, but development of the technology in recent years has produced fluorescent bulbs which produce light very similar to the colour of a traditional incandescent.

How to Shop for Fluorescent Bulbs

When shopping, look for a compact fluorescent bulb (CFL) with the same screw-in format as an incandescent bulb. An ideal colour temperature to substitute for an incandescent bulb is often called "Soft White" or "Warm White." If you'd like something brighter for a kitchen or other work space, look for "Bright White" or "Cool White."

Understanding Your Dog's Emotions

Do you get mad when you suddenly got awakened by a shout? Do you feel happy when you're mom gave you a sweet bear hug?

Your dogs do feel the same way too. They are like human beings. They can hear, see, touch, smell and taste like men do. Though they can't speak for their emotions, they have their own way of expressing themselves. Understanding your dog's feelings is one essential thing that you must consider during puppy training.

Under puppy training, the very usual action you'll notice about them is when they wag their tails with their head and ears held up high which means they are in their friendly and confident mood. That's the best time to have a bonding moment with them.

Next in line is hearing them barking or growling with their lips curled up. When you see your dog like this, be cautious that they are probably on their aggressive mood. They will hold their ears slightly backward against their head and might have their eyes narrowed.

Part of the puppy training is watching and observing your dogs in their play time. They might be in their playful mood when they bow towards you or even to another dog.

On the other hand, dogs feel stressed too. At times like this, you'll see them whining or quivering and sometimes even crying. Then you would know that they feel so stressed and they don't know what's going on. You'll also see their tails between their legs. Sounds funny but true.

Getting Started

Buy lightweight, durable containers that will fit the dimensions of your balcony. Be sure not to crowd the space - you'll want to have room for a comfortable chair so you can enjoy your garden! Ensure that the containers have drainage holes in the bottom. Don't be frightened by the cost of heavy terra-cotta or metal pots at garden shops; if you are resourceful, you can find the perfect containerr for less than twenty dollars.
Check how much sun your balcony gets. No direct sunlight or up to two hours of sunlight is good for shade plants. Three to five hours of sunlight is appropriate for partial-shade and partial-sun plants. More than five hours of direct sunlight is suitable for full-sun plants.

Setting Up

Create a drainage system. Saucers or slotted mats should sit under the containers to catch excess water, so it doesn't drain onto lower balconies.

When the leaves start to show through the straw, pile more straw on top until just the very top leaves are still showing. Continue this way until the potatoes are ready for harvest. It's very easy to check just by lifting the straw and it's very easy to harvest new potatoes as soon as they are the right size. Take what you need and then leave the rest to grow bigger. Try not to walk on the straw as this will compress it too much and may damage the growing potatoes.

Channeling Energy: Kids have lots of energy, which if not channeled properly can prove harmful. An over-reliance on stationary activities like TV cartoons or video games can harm their health and should be in balance with outdoor activities, sports or hobbies to channel their energy. It also helps them build confidence and improves self-esteem. Do these activities with them on evenings and weekends, or support them in the audience, by driving them, or helping them prepare their homework. Be careful not to overload these events in the week and let your children identify what they'd like to do rather than prescribe it.

A loving, healthy and open upbringing is the biggest gift you can give your children. Being too strict or too lenient can be destructive. Follow the middle path and enjoy this journey - it will be over all too fast.

- TALK TO AND LISTEN to your Children. Explain to your children that if anyone ever does anything to make them feel uncomfortable they can tell you…no matter who it is. Run scenarios with your child and pose "what if" situations with them.

- PERIODICALLY ask your child what things they like about someone and what things they dislike. Watch their reaction when they respond to you.

- KNOW WHO YOUR CHILDREN ARE SPENDING TIME WITH. You may trust your kid's friend Timmy's mom but what about his stepdad? How about Timmy's uncle who is living in their basement for a while? Mexico's Traditional Christmas Celebrations

Christmas festivites in Mexico are different than how it is celebrated across North America. It was only 30 years ago when Santa began to be a prominent figure in Mexico's Christmas. Traditionally, it is the Three Wise Men on January 6th, the Epiphany, who bring gifts to children. With respect to Mexico's high Roman Catholic population, Christ's birth and the arrival of the Three Wise Men are the most celebrated event with festivities beginning on December 16th, ending on February 2nd.

The Posadas begin December 16th to the 24th. They are processions to commemorate Mary and Joseph's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. Nativities are set up in homes and in public areas, awaiting baby Jesus who is added to the Nativity on December 24th, known as Noche Buena. Families attend midnight mass and generally keep Christmas day a quite family day. Some families do exchange gifts on the 25th.

A few days before January 6th, children write to the Reyes Magos asking for the toys they want. They take their letter to the town's plaza, tie it to a balloon to float up to the heavens. The night before the Dia de los Reyes, the children place their shoes under their bed to receive their gifts from Melchior, Balthasar and Gasper. The next day, friends and family gather to have a traditional pastry called Rosca de Reyes. It is a wreath shaped bread with a baby Jesus figurine hidden inside the bread. Whoever receives the slice with the figurine has to invite everyone present to a a party in their own home on February 2nd which is Candelaria day. On this day, all the baby Jesus figurines from the nativity scenes are brought to the church to be blessed. Nativity scenes are packed away for next year.

This brings the Christmas festivities to the end.
