Flower Size 1 to 1 3/4" [2.5 to 4.4 cm]

This species is the type species for the genus and is widespread through the Chineses Himalayas, western Himalayas, Assam, Bangladesh, eastern Himalayas, India, Nepal, Andaman Islands, Myanamar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Penninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and the Philippines occuring in broadleaf evergreen lowland forests as a large to giant sized, highly variable, hot to cool growing epiphyte at elevations of 200 to 2000 meters high up in trees in bright sun with very stout, drooping, branching stems carrying fleshy, incurved, oblong-ligulate, round lobed at the apex, broad, pale green leaves. As it's name implies it is highly fragrant and blooms in the late spring through fall on up to 3, sharply pendant, to 2' [60 cm] long, many [to 30] flowered, cylindric inflorescence that arise out of the leaf axils and as developing can be very sticky and giving rise to many, waxy, very fragrant flowers.

After a long time.. suddenly its bloom again!

After a long time, my eria bloom again. Not much left from the plant, After a few months of new shoot came out, the flower buds begin to appear. Believed that the flower is once for each shoot, then this will dry ,.. and the next cycle is for new shoot to came out.

Kota Padawan Orchids

It is end of July 2008, and have the opportunity to visit Kuching, Sarawa k. Another Malaysian state situated in Kalimantan/Borneo. Left late in the evening via AirAsia, the journey take about 1 hr 45 minutes.

A day to spent, we went to Kota Padawan, while enroute to Semangoh, a wildlife sanctuary for Orang Utan., visited the Kota Padawan Wild Orchids Garden.

Among of the orchids exhibit at Kota Padawan , Pitcher Plant and Wild Orchids Garden.

It an annual event hosted at Danga Bay, Johore Baharu, a town south of Kuala Lumpur, just less than 5 km from Singapore. Mostly the participant came from Asian region.
Year 2007 , International Orchid Show is the 6th one since its inaugural show in 1999. This show is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the region and lasts from 25th May to 3rd Jun 2007 at Danga Bay.

Located near the Woodlands Causeway at the southern tip of Johor, the orchid show was easily accessible via taxi and othe rpublic trnasport.

The show comprised of 2 sections, one being floral displays by international societies all over the world and the other being the retail section.

It an orchids show in Johor Bahru, atown south of Kuala Lumpur. Leaving home, early in the mornig, using the PLUS North South Expressway, me and my family drive straight to Danga Bay, Johor Baharu. Its an anual event and participation drew from various countries.

Bulbophyllum found near near waterfall

Its another weekend that I managed to have a slip out form my home, together with Nik and YC,, we went to 80 km away north of Kuala Lumpur. A slow flowing stream, nicely tucked under forest canopy, reveals alot of wild orchids.

Again, common species found are, Robiqueita ,

Colegyne pandurata is another species found on a tree trunk, where it just meters away form the stream.

A thorough search on top of rock boulders, reveals another bulbophyllum species, may be singaporaenum . With the area is quite damp, and under about 80% coverage from sun. The bulbphyllum were covered with some dead leaves.

Unfortunately, a clump of the bulbophyllum was found with it seeds intact. Ahhh missed to see the flowers. Well, this is good, since more of this bulbophyllum can be propagate naturally in that area.

19 April 2008 - Trips to waterfall

Its week end, 19 April 2008. Equipped with my faithfull Nikon camera, together with my nieces and a good friend, s_annuar or bluehippo2020@yahoo.com, we went to a waterfall, about 70 km away north of Kuala Lumpur. The trip take us about more than 1.5 hours from home, and after a heavy breakfast in Kg Pandan.

It is raining along the NSE expressway and that does not deter us from reaching the waterfalls, eventhough deep in our heart, the trip may be disaster.Alhamduliah, upon reaching the area, it is not raining.

A walk along the stream reveals few species available mix with nepthenses (or periuk kera).

Another species found are Robiquetia species .

Found bulbophyllum and yest to determined the species

Found aerides odorata on on e of the tree...

And another species of dendrobium , on top of rock boulders. The stem is quite brownish in colour, unfortunately, no flowers were found.

Thats what is written by the finder of the orchids. Another unknown species, and this shows that still alot of plants waiting to be found and identified in Malaysian jungles. Unfortunately, indiscrimante loggings will destroy all this beauties, as created by the creator, Allah.

What species is this?.. Bought it from Orang Asli stall on the way down from Cameron Highlands, a famous highland resort area in Malaysia.

Very small flower, little bit grenish. Note the psudobulb which have sharp edges and stiff leave.

Commonly found in Malaysian, jungles. at elevations around 1500 to 2000 meters as a small sized, warm to cool growing epiphyte with close set, ovoid pseudobulbs enveloped basally by 5 imbricate, brown leafless sheaths and carrying 3 to 4 apical, erect, lanceolate, thick, unevenly and obtusely bilobed apically, gradually narrowing below into the periolate base leaves that blooms in the spring on 1 to 2, wooly hairy, red, 8.6" [23.5 cm] long, to 50 flowered inflorescence arising from near the apex of the pseudobulb and with large, greenish yellow, reflexed, concave floral bracts. Personally found this near waterfall in Pahang, where it grow on a tree branches overhanging a small stream, with 70 % shade.

Found this orchids in Camera Highlands, being sold by Orang Asli.Normally found on tree trunks in shady forest between 700 meter up to 1000 meter. A miniature sized, warm to hot growing epiphytic species with ovate, strongly 4 angled, yellow pseudobulbs carrying a single, apical, erect, thin, oblong, apically blunt, shortly petiolate leaves that blooms on a basal, thin, wiry, semi-pendulous, 2 3/4" to 4.1" [7 to 11 cm] long, 2 flowered inflorescence carrying scented flowers.

An epiphytic species normally found up to 1000 meters in mountain of Borneo, but in Malaysia, normally found from sea-level up to 200 meters. In on of the state in Malaysia, Johore, this species is widely found in swamp forest. The flower is single with normal size about 3 cm with dull yellow.

The Pseudobulbs is close together to a few cm apart, appr 15 x 2 cm, 2 leaves appr 27 x 6 cm

Bulbophyllum lobii - the flower....

One of many species that is widely found in Malaysia and also neighboring countries, such as Sumatra, Java and Borneo in primary forest and humid places, between 600 - 2000m above sea level.

Briefly the plant pseudobulbs is placed 3cm or more apart on the creeping rhizome, 3-4 x 2.5cm, smooth an round when young, slightly flattened. Whereas the leaves are broadly lanceolate, about 20-25 x 6-12cm.

The flower inflorescences arised from it rhizome, penducle and pedicel together 20cm or more long, each bearing single flower, with 6 - 8cm broad, yellow, striped and flushed red

Note

This species varies very much throughout its range, in particular in coloring and the petal length.

The name will lead to a highland in Malaysia, the Cameron Highlands,... thus Bulbophyllum cameronense, is where this orchids is commonly found.

Still remember back in 2006, I managed to buy some plant and till todate, still not managed to grow it.

Bulbophyllum purpurecense

I have once found this Bulbophyllum purpurecense on tp of rock boulders, where it is being exposed by 100 % sun, sugesting that this species is quite robust.

The plant is slightly similar to bulbophyllum vaginatum, with some exception, ie the plant has slight trail of purplish color either on the leaf or the bulbs. Suggesting that the name is purpurecense.

Coelygyne pandurata

A lovely showy lowland orchids which is widely found in Malaysia, the Coelygyne pandurata orchids. It has a 2-leaved slender leaves coming out from a thin psudobulb. The inflorescenes normally 30 t0 40 cm in length where each flowers can grow up to 7cm across.

It has a lip with a black central patch and prominent white warts character.

Bulbophyllum patens is another widely found lowland orchids in Malaysia. An epiphyte orchids normally found on tree barks. Unfortunatelt, until todate I havent have the opportunities to see in in situ. Normally the in situ situation is at the roadside stalls operated by the aborigines.

The single lightly scented flowers have a straight lip that is highly mobile, where this on of many reason the flowers will get easily pollinated by insects.

The bulb to the end of leaf normally around 15 cm with stiff leaf. A hot growing species that requires, hot conditions, shade, frequent waterings and fertilizings as well as high humidity.

Bulbophyllum virescens -

The plant has long and slender psudobulb, whereas the leave is soft and big. Normally found around waterfalls areas on top of rock boulders, covered with dead leaves and damp areas. Another lolwland orchids that can be found in Malaysia. The flowers give a very smelly similar tor dried fish or "ikan masin"

Bulbophyllum gracillimum

Bulbophyllum gracillimum is a lowland orchids commonly found in Malaysian jungles. In on of my trip to Pahang, a state in Malaysia, this species were found growing in rubber plantations. Trees upon trees, this species were growing.

Luckily, the plantations owner was not keen on this plant, but rather keen on the rubber its self!.

The flower is long and slender, while the plant it self looks more to bulbophyllum vaginatum?... dont think so!..

Bulbophylum lasianthum - the flower.

Bulbophyllum lasianthum orchids is one of the largest type of bulbophylum species in Malaysia. The leaves can reach up to 2 feets, and normally found on top of rock boulders under tree shades, beside river banks.

The flowers emit a strong stench , similar to dried fish or 'ikan masin' as called by the locals. Interesting?... well it depends...

Bulbophyllum lobbii found in one of my visit to a waterfalls in Selangor. Eventhough it is a common lowland orchids, finding it in situ is quite challenging.

Unfortunately, till to date, the plant simply refused to flower.Shall the medium be replaced or need to give the correct fertiliser?.
