Making time for household chores can be difficult for even
the most motivated of us, but for those of us with children, it can feel like
an impossible task. If you struggle to finish a load of dishes, let alone clean
the bathroom, it might be time to rethink your cleaning routine. Thankfully,
over at <a href="https://modernize.com/"><span style="color: #1155cc;">Modernize</span></a>
we’ve done some of the work for you. Here are a few ways you can get some of
the cleaning done around the house with the help of the kids. No, really. Take
a look!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Make your own
cleaning supplies</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For the environmentally conscious family, traditional
cleaning supplies are a no-go when it comes to your household chores. Full of
toxins and harmful chemicals, these kinds of products are dangerous to both the
environment and your children. Thankfully, making your own cleaning supplies is
super easy and can be a task that you and your children complete together (who
doesn’t love a bit of chemistry?) when you get together to clean up the house.
With a couple of common household items and a few drops of essential oils, you
can make your own chemical-free cleaning products that work just as well as
their traditional counterparts. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Set a cleaning
schedule</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you’re even slightly type A, a regular cleaning schedule
that tells you which jobs to complete on which days (or weeks, or months) is a
must. Get the kids involved by including them in the cleaning lineup and
assigning them specific tasks. If this seems too complicated, why not make them
their own miniature schedule so they can keep themselves accountable for their
own toys, clothes, food, and self-care items. It will most likely take some
regular coaching at the beginning, but if you’re lucky your kids will take to
it easily and they just might help you cross a few things off your list. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Keep cleaning jobs
accessible</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When you’re assigning cleaning duties for the family, make
sure you keep it accessible for everyone. While I’m sure this goes without
saying, it’s important to remember that your kids are, well, kids, and that
dangerous and tough jobs are best left to the grown ups. Smaller, more
manageable tasks such as sweeping and dusting are perfect for younger kids,
while tidying up toys and even light vacuuming are pretty simple as well. If
you really want to get everyone involved, consider investing in a few kid-size
cleaning tools such as a Dustbuster and shorter brooms to make the job as
straightforward as possible. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b>Give kids ownership
over tasks</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In our home we live by this mantra: if it’s yours, it’s your
responsibility. While it’s not essential that you make a cleaning schedule for
your children, it helps immensely towards their sense of ownership over their
playthings. Whether or not you write it down, involving them in the regular
tidying and cleanup of their bedroom and playroom helps them to remember that
if something is theirs, they are responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.
With a little repetition, your kids will get the hang of it and quickly learn
how chores (even the boring ones) help to keep their things looking and working
their best. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Don’t forget the fun!</b><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Just because you’re cleaning the house doesn’t mean it has
to be boring (easier said than done, I know). Keep your kids—and
yourself—interested with incentives, rewards, and games throughout the cleaning
process. Race to complete your respective cleaning tasks with a special snack
or a few minutes of screen time after the job is done (or whichever reward
suits you and your kids best). If you have more than one child working on
chores at the same time, set them a time limit or job goal and get a real game
started. You’ll be surprised at just how much gets done when a little
competition gets thrown into the mix. </div>

I was really excited when <a href="http://greenmomsmeet.com/" target="_blank">Moms Meet</a> gave me the opportunity to review Fresh Express Salads. Vegetables are a huge part of my families' meals, and with the <a href="http://organicaspirations.blogspot.com/search/label/the%20farm" target="_blank">CSA</a> season here in PA not started, we are ready and willing to try some new veggies.<br />

The store where I bought my salad had so many amazing options. The "Spring Mix," "Spinach & Arugula," and "Veggie Lovers spring mix" were my favorites. My store did not stock any Organic options, but there is an entire line of USDA Organic salads by Fresh Express.<br />

The sample coupons came with some great ideas for taking regular (much higher calorie) dinners and lowering the calories by making them into a salad- it's called a Salad Swap. You can do your own Salad Swapping at <a href="http://www.saladswap.com/">saladswap.com</a> where you can choose your own high calorie cravings and get the recipes for a salad with the same flavor profile. (There's even an app!) Also like Fresh Express on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FreshExpressSalads">Facebook</a> and follow them on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/freshexpress/">Pinterest</a> for more great recipes and ideas!<br />

Two of my favorite salad recipes are combining salad with a high protein option. In my photos I made some easy baked chicken tenders, but I also love the very easy option of opening a BPA free can of tuna, draining it, and just dumping it on the salad. I get my veggies while still getting the protein boost that I need to keep running all day! The big truck pulls up, and the kids have to run to the window to see, "Is it for us?! Are they coming to <i>our</i> house?! Well, this particular day, it <i>was </i>our package, and as I unpacked the huge cooler full of yogurt, oh, they were in their bliss. I mentioned that they would have to wait for me to take pictures, but when they found out that one of the flavors delivered was Cotton Candy, "Oh please mommy, just one!" And so it was that two new YoYummy fans were born! <br />
<br />
Over the next few days we tried all of the flavors, mixed berry, strawberry, strawberry banana, and the famous cotton candy. We had YoYummy for snack, then the next day we had YoYummy for breakfast, and I packed YoYummy in lunches, in fact, I'm not sure there was a meal which YoYummy was not requested for the next few days- that huge sample that they sent us didn't last long! <br />

The great thing about YoYummy is that it isn't your normal processed junk filled with chemicals. Instead, it has 10 percent less sugar than the leading national brand kids’ yogurt. The sweetness comes from real fruits and berries, so I feel great about giving this product to my family. The ingredient list is free of high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, additives, and preservatives, which is a must in my house. In addition, they are made with made with Grade-A rBST-free Vermont milk, is a good source of calcium, and is rich in vitamin A and D. Although I am disappointed that this delicious product isn't Organic, I am pleased with the rest of the ingredients. I was also glad to know that the packaging is BPA free. I will definitely be buying this product again!<br />

<br />
<br />
..for you Lord who loves me far beyond what I deserve.<br />
<br />
...for being together with family. There's nothing that brings joy to my heart like family gathering. <br />
<br />
...for my health, and I am so thankful for a healthy family as well.<br />
<br />
...for a safe and warm place to live. My blessings far exceed these basic necessities, but I never want to forget that no matter what problems come up, many of them are nothing compared to what many families have to live through.<br />
<br />
...for holiday traditions.<br />
<br />
...for a recent transformation in Ana. I love that the sweet lovely girl who I know is shining through to others. I have seen her confidence grow in the past few months, and I am thankful for her preschool teachers and high school helpers for creating such a nurturing environment where she can really flourish! <br />
<br />
...for a clean house!<br />
<br />
...for the sweet little voices that my girls have. The little "cartoon character:" voices won't last forever, so I'll enjoy them while I can!<br />
<br />
...for the ability to play music. From the moment I heard a friend playing piano when I was in grade school, I knew that I wanted to make amazing sounds too. There's something so other-worldly about it- to forget about myself, and to just listen and play...<br />
<br />
...for friends new and old. To share smiles and memories and kids and even hard times makes friends so important.<br />
<br />
...for my sweet dog Shady. She's the best dog ever. Enough said.<br />
<br />
...for my new healthy eating challenge group. My friend Nina has been an inspiration. I physically feel so good eating clean! <br />
<br />
...and with that being said, I'm still thanking You, Lord, for Thanksgiving dessert! (Celebrations mean you get to eat sugar and other goodies!)<br />
<br />
...for my Scott. From working hard at his job to washing the dishes on Thanksgiving day, he's our family's wonderful example of a Christ-like man. I have watched him sacrifice what he would want for our family so often, and it has not gone unnoticed. He is my true love, and I'm so blessed to live each day with him.<br />

<br />
I said good-bye to my puppy this weekend. Ana cries and cries when she thinks about how she misses him. He was the most gentle and loving lab I've ever known, and I'll never forget holding him in my hands the day he was born. We used to give some of our puppies silly names before we sold them, and he was "Load" because he was the big guy of the litter. When it was time to name him he was Fallon- Fallon's Load of Rox. <br />
<br />
It was fitting to spend the last day with him in the yard where he spent his 14 years. The kids played and had fun, but they would stop to lovingly pet him and say a prayer for him. Yesterday when we stood and looked at his grave, the tears came, but standing there in the peaceful sunset it felt right to go on gardening and playing and doing all of the things that we did just a few days earlier when he was still with us. Although there were tears, there were lots of smiles too- and popsicles. Our old guy would have approved. <br />

Last summer I shared each week of the <a href="http://organicaspirations.blogspot.com/search/label/the%20farm" target="_blank">CSA share</a> that I received. This year the share is no less promising- it's even more packed with goodness, but I have to share a picture of my own crop from this year. My family has been living on lettuce from the farm mixed with this spicy mix that we harvested from our own garden! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I transplanted about 50 tomato plants just last week, so I'm hoping for lots of great tomato products to can this year!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What are you hopeful for from your garden this year? </div>

Here's a little montage of what we've been up to.<br />
<br />

We had a great time at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Plant Sale (even though I think I killed some of my new plants!)<br />

She now has an update video that I am pleased to share with you today!<br />

Please be aware that asbestos is still a very high health risk in the United States. We all know the serious problems of asbestos exposure, yet it is still used in items like brake pads and building materials. <a href="http://www.saferchemicals.org/resources/chemicals/asbestos.html" target="_blank">Read more about this on the Safer Chemicals Healthy Families Website.</a><br />

There are lots of other areas where I would like to reduce my use of new plastics, but my utensils and other kitchen things I would really like to be plastic-free to reduce the chances of hot foods causing the different plastics to leech chemicals into our food. I will continue to use the plastic items I have until I am able to replace them.<br />
<br />

<br />
<img alt="fabric_sandwich_bag" src="http://www.sanctusmundo.com/pictures/lwp-pics/sandwichbag.jpg" /> I also want these <a href="http://lifewithoutplastic.com/boutique/cotton-and-hemp-sandwich-bag-p-313.html" target="_blank">sandwich bags from Life without Plastic.</a><br />
<br />
I already use some Eco friendly ideas in the kitchen, including <a href="http://organicaspirations.blogspot.com/2013/03/diy-healthy-popsicle-and-eco-kids.html" target="_blank">my DIY glass Popsicle molds</a>. (These are so easy- you can make your own too!) I've started re-using glass jars instead of airtight containers, and I have two stainless drink bottles which I take everywhere. I have some wooden dishes for my kids, but they wear out quickly, and they are not dishwasher safe. I'm hoping that using more stainless steel will decrease my time in front of that dreaded sink!<br />

Yesterday morning I had a fun adventure to meet one of the organic farmers from <a href="http://manchester-farms.com/" target="_blank">Manchester Farms</a> to pick up my organic grass-fed beef. I already made some hamburgers from the meat, and I know it was worth my time and every penny my husband and I spent. It was not like the organic beef from the stores that shrinks by 60% while it cooks. The color and the taste are just amazing. If you've been considering going local for your beef- do it. It's worth it 100%! The next addition to my new freezer?- Manchester Farms pork! <br />

Seriously, I had my kids in the car, dressed, fed, and ready to play at the park in the good weather bright and early. As I was pulling into the park, however, I realized that it was Tuesday, and that I did not put my Eco Kids up OR share the code with Hannah. *sigh* <br />
<br />
For Earth Day, we decided to volunteer for Collier Township's Annual Keep Collier Beautiful Day.<br />

We were assigned to the place where we probably would have spent our Saturday anyway, the Panhandle Trail. We collected about four or five bags of trash, but it was sad that there was an entire hillside of trash that we couldn't clean up because we had the kids with us. <br />

We suspected that some of the mess was left over from the flooding cause by Ivan several years back, but many of the things left there were clearly things that people had no other way of disposing of. There were aerosol cans, tires, building supplies, oil change materials, and construction supplies. Scott made a good point that there is no place in our area (that we know of) where people can easily take these hazardous materials for easy recycling or disposal.<br />
<br />
I think he's right. It's no excuse for dumping things on the trail, but maybe our public land would be more free of this garbage if people knew where to take it. I did a bit of research on<a href="http://earth911.com/recycling/" target="_blank"> Earth 911</a>, and there are some places to take some of these things near us. Earth 911 is an easy site to use, you just type in your zip code and then click on what items you are trying to recycle or safely dispose of. <br />
<br />
All in all, we were happy with all of the trash that we were able to pick up from one of our favorite trails, and it inspired us to bring a garbage bag when we <a href="http://geocaching.com/" target="_blank">geocache</a> so that we can "cache in, trash out." We won't be able to carry as much as we cleaned up today, but we saw that even a little bit would make a difference. <br />

<br />
We decided (even before we won a raffle at the lunch) to make this fun and purposeful event a yearly tradition for our family. On our way back to the car, we were pleased with how nice and clean the trail was, and we got some exercise, fresh air, and a few geocaches while we were at it!<br />

Cloth wipes are a great way to eliminate chemicals from your baby's products. Most companies don't label what they put in their wipes, and you will know exactly what you are putting on yours. I prefer cloth wipes because they are sturdier and softer on little bottoms as well. If that all isn't enough, cloth wipes are much better for the environment because they are made from used materials, they are washed and reused, and when they are worn out, they are fully compostable. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Materials:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>3-4 flannel recieving blankets (can be found at the thrift store for between $.25 and $.50.)</li>
<li>pinking shears</li>
<li>cardboard cut to a 7" by 7"square</li>
<li>Empty wipe container</li>
</ul>
<div>
Directions:</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. Spread the first receiving blanket on the ground or table. Lay the cardboard pattern on the corner, and use the pinking shears to cut around the remaining two edges.</div>
<div>
2. Continue to move the pattern up the edge of the blanket and cut squares from the blanket.</div>
<div>
3. It's that simple! You can choose to serge the edges, but I don't do that anymore. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To Fold:</div>
<div>
1. Lay the first wipe face down.</div>
<div>
2. Lay the second wipe face down halfway covering the first wipe.</div>

<div>
3. Fold remaining half of the first wipe over the half of the second wipe.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

4. Repeat until all of the wipes are folded in the pile. These will pop up from a wipe container one by one! </div>

Wipe Solution:</div>
<div>
You can make your own wipe soution by using water, Dr. Bronner's Soap, and organic baby oil. (I use the two listed below). Dr. Bronner's is too harsh for my girls' diaper areas, so I only use water and oil.<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=organiaspira-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B000WH461A&ref=qf_sp_asin_til&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe><iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=organiaspira-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=B0009ET5WG&ref=tf_til&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></div>

I didn't have anything to buy. Instead, I feel honored to have been able to deliver a letter asking Best to create a policy banning the Hazardous 100+ chemicals from their store as part of the Mind the Store Campaign launched by Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I love that I can be a part of this campaign because I struggle every time I go to the store. Many products and even packaging contain chemicals that can cause cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive damage, birth defects, and more. Formaldehyde, BPA, flame retardants, parabens, and phthalates are just five of over 100 dangerous chemicals listed in the Hazardous 100+. It is overwhelming to go into a store and not know which items contain harmful chemicals. From canned goods to furniture to beauty products, it seems like nothing is immune from containing a dangerous dose of chemicals.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmLLshrA1liKZCD5bxzsavBfa9VUFDq-f6Oqkb8TmnQcDp9o8a0yEjx0vO9xO0aAakFsb49waXErIreLSBPJDLlpy42n43EJIWVjNs_kun1oFERbdGWmSndj38kPD123gdLTFn1tbN1aQ/s1600/mindthestore.org-shopping-bags.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmLLshrA1liKZCD5bxzsavBfa9VUFDq-f6Oqkb8TmnQcDp9o8a0yEjx0vO9xO0aAakFsb49waXErIreLSBPJDLlpy42n43EJIWVjNs_kun1oFERbdGWmSndj38kPD123gdLTFn1tbN1aQ/s640/mindthestore.org-shopping-bags.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The purpose of the Mind the Store campaign is to ask the top ten retailers to take a leadership role in regulating the chemicals that are in their products since the Federal Government has yet to pass legislation against the Hazardous 100+. Large retailers changing their policies on toxics would then put pressure on the manufacturers to remove the Hazardous 100+ from their products.<i> Since the government isn't minding the store, who will?</i><br />
<br />
Visiting my local store with a letter addressed to the CEO of the company was a simple way that I could help to improve this dangerous situation we are facing as consumers. Watch the video I made with my daughters when I visited Best Buy today:<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KHGcgJfAmqU" width="420"></iframe><br />
<br />
If you would like to do something to help, it's simple. Just visit <a href="http://mindthestore.saferchemicals.org/" target="_blank">Mind the Store</a> and print out a letter. Take it with you and deliver it to the store manager on your next shopping trip. It's simple! The manager who I spoke with today was friendly and very interested in what I had to say. He and another associate even joked with me that they would have to switch deodorants if they were going to go chemical free. It was the perfect opportunity for me to say that we as consumers shouldn't have to switch products because no products should be allowed to contain harmful chemicals. That is just what the Mind the Store Campaign is all about!<br />
<br />
Best Buy, as I told the manager I spoke with today, has an amazing recycling program, and I love that they are removing some chemicals from their brand of packaging. They are on the right track, and I have very high hopes that they will add to their official policy and eventually ban all of the Hazardous 100+ from products sold in their stores.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhakEDAmKfZbYypr0QWYHS-0jEbofAIvLSvYiPLK2dy4emN19LuxnpofBNAdW93BXwht-AVZ5CDok5Y_zCPWjyUvs3ATiCCsMlVHFbgvPh-3-55_9PBqZRCdrs8n2XUhXHF55Pggog85KM/s1600/mindthestore.org-baby-in-cart.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhakEDAmKfZbYypr0QWYHS-0jEbofAIvLSvYiPLK2dy4emN19LuxnpofBNAdW93BXwht-AVZ5CDok5Y_zCPWjyUvs3ATiCCsMlVHFbgvPh-3-55_9PBqZRCdrs8n2XUhXHF55Pggog85KM/s640/mindthestore.org-baby-in-cart.png" width="640" /></a></div>
I do spend a great deal of time researching and only purchasing products that are safe for my family. I especially do this for my children because a young child's developing body is more likely to have more adverse reactions to toxins. It isn't right that some of the products on the shelves may contain chemicals that have been linked to cancer, asthma, attention deficit disorder, hormone disruption, and birth defects. <b> I am asking Best Buy and the other top 10 retailers to do what's right, and Mind the Store.</b><br />

<br />
<br />
With the return of warm weather comes the time to start the garden. Although in many zones, seed can be sown directly into the ground now, chances are there are a few varieties of plant that should be started inside. Some examples of plants that need an indoor start in most cases are peppers, tomatoes, and celery. Rather than buy trays for starting your seeds, why not collect some of the plastic waste that is already in your recycling bin to reuse? Milk jugs, vinegar jugs, and clear packages that often hold cupcakes or cookies make great mini-greenhouses. <br />
<br />
Materials:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Plastic containers</li>
<li>Heavy duty scissors (a woodburning tool would also work well for this)</li>
<li>Packing tape</li>
<li>Soil</li>
<li>Seeds</li>
</ul>
<div>
Directions:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. For jugs, cut around the middle leaving the top and bottom connected in a small space.</div>
<div>
<ol><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcf7duB9VeQIJaU_Pt3k8mP3vX087qb2MKgPwwyQqrCCPFLZk35xC-V2RlTmXhEPIsmA8h1dn0BN3G6Jps9fljx9rhiFtB0X1DFfx6mr11xCH2WPa1t620wt9TRmwCDAnPxohINDG0b_I/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Making mini greenhouses out of milk and vinegar jugs" border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcf7duB9VeQIJaU_Pt3k8mP3vX087qb2MKgPwwyQqrCCPFLZk35xC-V2RlTmXhEPIsmA8h1dn0BN3G6Jps9fljx9rhiFtB0X1DFfx6mr11xCH2WPa1t620wt9TRmwCDAnPxohINDG0b_I/s640/010.JPG" title="" width="640" /></a>
<li><br /></li>
<li>2. Discard lids, and poke holes in the bottom for drainage.</li>
<li> Add about three inches of soil, and soak the soil. Let the soil drain completely before planting about four seeds.</li>
<li>Tape the jugs back together. Supposedly you can leave these little greenhouses outside even in the winter, but thus far I've had better luck with the ones that only go outside on nice days. </li>
<li>For the clear bakery containers, follow the same steps, but poke holes in the top and bottom. There's no need for cutting or taping because the container opens nicely and snaps back shut.</li>
<li>Place containers next to a window that gets direct sunlight, and add a light if possible.</li>
</ol>

The return of spring weather to our area may have been ushered in by a severe stomach bug in my family, but it's here! We have officially deemed it nice enough to <a href="http://geocaching.com/" target="_blank">geocache</a> with toddlers, and my weak but healing Ana was able to go outside for a while yesterday to get a breath of fresh air. Many of our seeds have been planted by the window, and I've been checking daily for signs of those beautiful green threads of life which will grow into huge tomato and pepper plants which we are hoping will feed us well into next winter. Most importantly, when we wake early, the sun is rising to greet us, and so spring must surely be here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we celebrated Easter, I tried to choose my purchases wisely, and my daughters rejoiced when they received strawberry applesauce and cereal bars in their baskets! (YES!) Even more though, I've been careful to reiterate that Easter is so much more than baskets and bunnies. Although my daughter told me that Jesus dyed (or did she mean died?) Easter eggs, I've had the pleasure of telling her the true Easter story time and time again. Her eyes grew wide when she learned that he died with nails through his hands and feet, and she looked devastated when she learned that a spear was used to pierce our Saviour's side. The best part, however, was telling her that Jesus died, but he rose again. He's ALIVE! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Easter is the day that we remember how Jesus proved that He is indeed God. He died, but the grave couldn't hold Him. He promises that if we believe, we too will live with Him. The grave will not hold us either, and we will pass from one life into another. If you don't have that assurance that you will live forever by His side, please pray for Jesus to be your Savior. Don't wait though- today is the day that He's calling you, and you can come as you are. You never know what tomorrow holds. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I did not plan on writing about faith when I sat down here, so the Lord must have this important message for one of my dear readers.</div>

<br /></div>
I have been trying to phase plastic out of my kitchen. It hasn't been the easiest task for me since much of what my kids use is plastic. Popsicles, however, I have down pat. These are a simple and healthy treat that I don't mind feeding to my girls because they are simply made with keifer. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Materials:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Tall shot glasses</li>
<li>Washed popsicle sticks</li>
<li>Keifer</li>
</ul>
<div>
Instructions:</div>
</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Pour keifer into each shot glass filling the glass to the rim. </li>
<li>Insert a popsicle stick into the middle of each glass.</li>
<li>Freeze for several hours.</li>
<li>To remove the popsicles, let them sit on the counter for about five minutes. </li>
</ol>

The garden is not open to the public yet, but we were able to get a preview tour. It was so worth it, and while we were there, one of the volunteers who was helping with the tour was also an expert on birds. This was really cool, and I learned a few things about birds even though the three year old and nearly two year old certainly prevented us from seeing a rare gem! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsgars2z-582fNS1W49UJFqOl998-mrt5h8eIdTOpZgz5MkyGBk0B_HM1_QWDuuRTLBurR9E-1tn7RN9rLmifk0vBD304s6h0nJrkFhu-OUpCYal_OIfSfajuUynZbHmBly3s3Qmdcw8c/s1600/056.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsgars2z-582fNS1W49UJFqOl998-mrt5h8eIdTOpZgz5MkyGBk0B_HM1_QWDuuRTLBurR9E-1tn7RN9rLmifk0vBD304s6h0nJrkFhu-OUpCYal_OIfSfajuUynZbHmBly3s3Qmdcw8c/s640/056.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
One thing about birds that I took away from the tour was that I would really like to encourage their presence in my yard, and now is the time to prepare some cozy nesting spots for them. Our yard already has some birdhouses (pictured above), but my husband has also helped the girls to make some fun and colorful birdhouses which would make our bird watching so much more personal for Ana and Addie. <br />

<b>Why Attract Birds?</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
There are many reason to attract birds to your yard. Birds are great at controlling pests, and they eat aphids and other bugs that are not beneficial to our gardens. The garden will also benefit from nectar drinking birds that provide pollination. In addition, watching birds is fun, relaxing, and educational. I have already learned to recognize calls from a few birds, and my daughters have learned to name several birds. We are not the only ones who benefit though, private property accounts for about 80% of habitat for birds. Making places on your property for birds to nest, eat, and bathe certainly makes it easier for birds to survive despite huge amounts of land turning residential. <b>Tips for Attracting Birds</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
The bird expert who I had the pleasure of meeting gave some great tips for attracting birds this season:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Have your birdhouses out by the end of March.</li>
<li>Use suet cages or a mesh produce bag to hold pet hair and small pieces of yarn for birds to use in their nests.</li>
<li>Hang your birdhouses in pairs.</li>
<li>Hang feeders during the winter months when plants and bugs are scarce.</li>
</ul>
