EASTER SUNDAY REFLECTING ON BLESSINGS

Today, Easter Sunday, helps me reflect on just how blessed we are. We can spend time looking at all the ugliness within the world but I believe it's best that we focus on all the small miracles that surround us in the midst of the negativity that can take place in the world. You see, "all things work for the good for those who love the lord and are called according to his purpose." On Friday I went to see a movie called Miracles from Heaven. This movie reminded me of how true that statement is.

I spent a bit of time this morning reflecting on all the miracles that have taken place during my efforts to fulfill my calling. I believe that I was called to produce products that are helpful to people and despite all the following situations God has managed to continue using me and guiding me with ways to stay out of harms way when I've had to battle with the attacks from the Goliath's within the industry.

After winning awards and receiving lots of media attention for our efforts to produce truly clean water-less products that really do serve your health and the planet well. Lovely Lady Products has been bombarded with ugly competitor attacks that went beyond just business but have struck at the very core of our civil and federal rights. You see many big commercial brands want to continue deceiving the public about healthy products and they spend a lot of effort and money to keep the smaller companies who are doing the right thing from succeeding (a professor from the Kellogg School of Manage wrote a book about this very thing, it's called, "Defending Your Brand" written in an effort to help small companies to become of aware of competitor attacks). Some of this gave me pause to give up but it was the individuals who support our products and the many testimonies of how our products are helpful that kept me in this industry (but most of all I realized that I am safe in the knowledge that God has his hands on me and I'm truly honored for his grace and mercy). So please note that no matter what you are going through use today to ask God for guidance and praise him through it all. I'm sure by now my customers know that I don't follow the traditional rules for running my business. My heart leads me to speak my truth and produce my products in an honest fashion and if that takes away from what others call success so be it because I know that God is in charge of my pathway. Troubles that God helped us to over come and he's still watching over us:

Discovering that competitors were using some of our employees to spy and sabotage our business.
Competitors using some vendors to attack our effects to produce our products and grow
Competitors trying to interfere with our continued success to receive our organic certifications.
Competitors using Major Retail Chain Employees to slow our growth within their many retail stores, we continue to have success after removing our products from this major health food chain.
Home and office invasions, using some of my neighbors, friends and I'm sad to say FAMILY MEMBERS too in an effort to do so.
Police corruption and lack of assistance from Federal Employees when we reached out for help (major effort to cover up for the BIG GUY).
Surviving what I believed was an attack on my life via someone cutting my car brake line.
Continuous attempts to place my life under surveillance once it was known that we went to the press, the ACLU and other watchdog groups.
Not to mention continuous subtle threats in an effort to keep me quiet because they are well aware of how far they have strayed from the law with their tactics to destroy a smaller competitor.

Now let me just say this, I no longer have bitterness in my heart and I have learned that your enemies can serve to push you to live at a higher level of consciousness and God also uses them to help you move towards whatever he has in store for you. I know it's very difficult for us to love individuals who attack us but I've learned that we can do it through the love of God. I decided to share this brief version of my story regarding the trials and tribulations I've endured while running my business to inspire others to following their calling no matter the obstacles. There is definitely a reason we decided to formulate with a plant called Everlasting, an oil from a tree that has the ability to rebirth it self after laying dormant for 7 years (this is another blog story). Just remember to walk in the light.

VALENTINE'S DAY: It's History, The Rose Connection and Celebrating It via Organic Body Care

On February 14th, many individuals across the globe celebrate a romantic tradition known as Valentine's Day. It is a day to express and indicate how much love you have for certain family members and friends (I do believe this is something we should do everyday, I'm just saying.....). Have you every asked yourself how this tradition come to be and/or how did roses become part of its history? And, what does organic body care have to do with all of this? Let's start by chatting about its history.

THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE

The history of Valentine's Day and the story of its patron saint is shrouded in mystery. One thing is certain, February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and St. Valentine's Day is known to contain vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient ritual?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families so he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine saw this as an injustice and decided to go against the decree and continued to perform secret marriages for young people in love. When this was discovered, Claudius had Valentine put to death.

There are other stories that say Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. One particular legend states that Valentine sent the first "valentine" greeting after he fell in love with a young girl, who could have been the jailor's daughter (thought to have visited him during his imprisonment). Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a signed letter stating, "From your Valentine, " an expression that we still use today. The truth behind the legend is a bit murky, but all the stories show a sympathetic, heroic and romantic individual. One thing is for certain, St. Valentine has become one of the most popular saints in England and France dating back to the middle ages.

THE ROSE CONNECTION

There are several theories on how roses became a love symbol, one comes from early ancient Egypt. Ancient stories state that Cleopatra would scatter rose petals over her floor in an effort to welcome her lover Mark Anthony. However, Roman myth tells a story of Cupid spilling a sweet nectar that was part of an offering and it is said that roses grew forth from the ground where the nectar spilled. While the history of Valentine's Day is hotly debated, there's no one to date questioning that roses have come to symbolize love and romance. The Victorians began this tradition through floriograph, also known as the language of the flowers, a way to communicate feelings we find difficult to express by giving certain flowers to indicate what we are in fact feeling. For example; using red roses to express passion and romantic feelings associated with love and admiration.

What does this word mean and how does it affect your life, your views, your health and the well being of the planet. Once you take a moment to ponder on this, it's kind of deep, isn't it? My opinion is that it all depends on what you're pouring on and into your body to influence your efforts at beauty. I also believe it to be a mental state as well as something visual.

Let's start with the standard explanation for what beauty is.

Wikipedia states:

"Beauty is the quality of being pleasing, especially to look at, or someone or something that gives great pleasure, especially when looking at it."

Webster's 1913 Dictionary states the following:

1. An assemblage of graces or properties pleasing to the eye, the ear, the intellect, the æsthetic faculty, or the moral sense. The old definition of beauty, in the Roman school, was, "multitude in unity;" and there is no doubt that such is the principle of beauty. - Coleridge.
2. A particular grace, feature, ornament, or excellence; anything beautiful; as, the beauties of nature.
3. A beautiful person, esp. a beautiful woman.

Tips for Winterizing Your Skin With Organic Body Care

Hello Lovely Fans, right now you are probably scratching your head and saying, "Isn't it a bit premature to be discussing winterizing your skin since we still have a bit of time before fall hits. Not really my friends, depending on where you live, the changing of the seasons can catch you off guard. Hear in Colorado, you can find yourself shoveling snow in September, so I think it's a good idea to at the very least arm yourself with knowledge about how cold weather can effect your skin and what to do about it.

Why the concern about cold weather and the skin?

During winter temperatures and humidity drops can affect skin dryness, the strong harsh winds can cause dry, parched and cracking skin (winter weather can pull the moisture from your skin). Humidity below 30% does a number on the skin, especially our lips and hands if your more than a bit over thirty something. BIG SMILE! The winter months and its low humidity dries out your skin and if you're using harsh soaps, you can look forward to it stripping away the natural oils in your skin. The ability to produce more natural protective oils (that area called the sebum) declines with age. Please note that it's also a good idea to stay away from the toxic chemical soaps, they do a lot more than dry out your skin. Winter temperatures are also known for making your skin feel dry, especially our hands and feet. Rough!

So what are we to do, below is a list of tips for your skin and a few suggestions to help you avoid trouble during this time of year:

What not to do:

Avoid toxic soaps, as I stated above, they dry out your skin and the chemicals are horrible for your health (try our Everlasting-Argan Facial Cleansing Bar, the performance speaks for itself).
Avoid taking baths in very hot water, soaking in a Jacuzzi and taking long hot showers (I sure miss the hot baths during this time of year, love the hot water, but my skin is always lovely during this time, go lukewarm). Yes, leisurely hot baths and showers are so wonderful but too much of it is bad for the skin. Inundating skin with water breaks down the substance that keeps skin cells intact. Keep your showers and/or baths short and not too hot during the winter months.
No astringents during the winter, they dry out your skin. Please stick with clean ingredient toners. You might try our Helichrysum Hydrosol Skin toner.
Avoid wearing wool and other scratch textures next to your skin because they irritate it and can lead to itching. If you must, wear cotton camisoles or undershirts underneath wool clothing.
Avoid exfoliating too much. Yes, that's what I said and here's why. Exfoliation might cause more skin sensitivity in the winter months. So if you are exfoliating more than once a week, you should only do this once a week even if your skin isn't sensitive. Try using just honey and a bit of brown sugar to exfoliate or try applying lemon juice to the skin for about 5 minutes to dissolve away the dead skin.
Not a good idea to wash your hair every day during the winter months due to cold winds, your hair and scalp are left very dry.

What to do:

Drink plenty of water, its helps your skin to shine; however drinking it from the bottle can cause your lips to chap, so be armed with a lip balm. Use a humidifier to replenish moisture to the skin's top layer
Do eat fat, the good ones. Try adding avocado to your salad and/or cook with olive oil, it's very healthy and beneficial so do incorporate these healthy fats into your diet, hydrating your skin from the inside out.
Natural sun-screens (read your labels and make sure they truly are natural). You are trying to avoid cancer from the sun, not soak it up from a product.
Do use serums under your moisturizer. Serums are important in the winter months, try adding it prior to your normal moisturizer for that added protection. Our immortal rose oil and the night serum are extremely light so no concerns over changing the consistency of your moisturizer. They also absorb into the skin very quickly leaving no oily residue.
Do keep your skin, especially your hands clean and healthy in an effort to avoid the spread of winter illnesses (colds and flu). Not a good idea to use too much antibacterial soaps gels and wipes because they are usually full of alcohol and will most likely dry out your skin. This strips away your skin's natural oils. Just note that plain soap and water will kill most germs and keep you from getting sick.
Invest in a high quality and pure shampoo and conditioner to get a healthy shine. Do wash your hair once or twice a week and use lukewarm water to avoid frizziness and to maintain maximum moisture (read about our Everlasting-Argan Neroli Shampoo/Conditioning Bar).

This provides a shine to your hair and prevents it from breakage. Although ideally, it is always good to let your hair dry naturally. If you are using a hairdryer, don't over dry your hair, as it will leave it frizzy and damaged. Try to set your hairdryer on the 'cool' mode, as it is gentler, although it might be a little time consuming. Try not to leave the house with wet hair. The cold weather can freeze the hair at the cuticle and cause it to break.

If You're Celiac or Gluten Intolerant, Should You Use Gluten Free Body Care?

The reason we use organic body care is to take care of the skin, so it’s a good assumption made by many that “what goes on goes in.” Naturally, any substance place on the skin is absorbed by the body into its bloodstream. Hence, using products that contain gluten is a risk to those with Celiac Disease and Intolerance. If the body does not tolerate gluten on the inside, most likely, there’s a good chance that gluten won’t do much good for the body on the outside either. Studies have shown that gluten has been the culprit in causing acne, rosacea, eczema, hives dermatitis herpetiformis, and psoriasis for many with intolerance to this protein. If someone who suffers from any of these and gluten sensitivity, there’s a very good chance the cosmetics, body and hair care products could be the source of the problem.

Personal care products can be challenging when going gluten free. The existence of gluten in cosmetics and organic body care (as well as none organic) products, including lotions and shampoos is backed up by the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center. And, According to a study by George Washington University, gluten is pervasive in cosmetics, and it is rarely labeled which may cause a threat to those of us with Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivities. The George Washington University study found that people sensitive to gluten could react negatively to things like wheat germ oil, which is often used to produce naturally-derived Vitamin E, which is commonly found in commercial brand cosmetics and body care. In the United States, the labeling of Cosmetics and Personal Care Products is the responsibility of the FDA. Unfortunately, these products do not have to adhere to the same labeling standards as the foods we eat; even though we are applying them to the largest organ of our body....our skin. Often, those of us with gluten intolerance are accustom to looking for gluten in food, but one should also be aware of the gluten lurking in their cosmetics and toiletries, researchers stated during a national meeting of gastroenterologist in Washington, D.C.

Food labels almost always say whether or not a product contains gluten, a type of protein found in wheat, barley, and other grains. But the packaging of body lotions and other beauty products rarely provides that information, even though many such products contain substances derived from grain, says Pia Prakash, M.D., a resident in internal medicine at George Washington University. The Doctor, who helped conduct the research, also stated that lipsticks, powders and foundations are probably the ones they worry about most and one never see ingredient lists on those products. She and her colleagues surveyed the websites of 10 leading makeup companies, Prakash says, and found that "none actually provided any information on products that contained gluten.”

At the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology, Prakash and her colleagues presented a case report on a 28-year-old woman with celiac disease who had successfully controlled her symptoms for several years by restricting the amount of gluten in her diet. After starting to use a new body lotion, however, the woman developed an itchy, blistering rash on her arms, as well as abdominal bloating and diarrhea—all of which disappeared once she stopped using the lotion.Pretty much anyone who's sensitive to gluten could experience a similar reaction, says Marie Borum, M.D., the lead author of the study and a professor of medicine at George Washington University. Gluten can't be absorbed through the skin, but people may accidentally ingest small quantities of lotion, lipstick, or other products if they have the product on their hands or use it around their mouth.

There are many doctors and scientist in the US and Internationally would argue against the statement that the skin doesn’t absorb gluten. Dr. Vikki Petersen, a Chiropractor and Certified Clinical Nutritionist is co-founder and co-director, of the renowned HealthNow Medical Center in Sunnyvale California (who’s gluten intolerant), has often chatted about the argument in this arena. From a scientific viewpoint, we are told that the gluten molecule is too big to permeate in our skin, so unless we’re swallowing it, there shouldn't be a problem. Dr. Petersen, states that there are those individuals who have NIGE response to gluten, meaning evening a topical application is going to bother them. These are some individuals who have an immediate reaction to gluten; similar to someone who might eat strawberries and breaks out in hives almost immediately, so it is that kind of immune immediate response, which is quite quick. There are others who don’t have that kind of topically problem, but may use a lotion and get their common gluten response as if they ate gluten. So they didn’t eat it, but they placed it one their skin and had the same reaction. So science is telling us that the gluten molecule is too big, yet people are having reactions and so it might be akin to those of us who are gluten sensitive are told because we don’t have a positive biopsy of our small intestine that shows eradication of our villi, then we’re fine to eat gluten and those experience this all know that’s not the case.

Health care providers and consumers’ alike need to be aware of the potential for this type of inadvertent gluten exposure, Borum says. "If you're just focusing on food intake, you may be missing something that's very important and could make a difference in someone's life." So how can celiac patients avoid hidden gluten in organic body care and cosmetics? More companies are starting to make gluten free body care products (stating that they are gluten-free is different from testing to ensure they are by a third-party organization). However, it’s a good idea for consumers to contact manufacturers directly to find out which of their products contain gluten. An informal survey of online forums for celiac patients shows that many companies are forthcoming with this information.

When products do list their ingredients, careful label reading is a must, but simply looking for the word "gluten" isn't sufficient, the researchers say. For instance, the vitamin E found in beauty products may be derived from wheat and contain gluten, even though the label just lists "vitamin E," Borum says. Another way to avoid hidden gluten in body care and cosmetics, is to learn about the many hidden gluten, products that are derived from wheat and contain gluten, similar to what Dr. Borum states about vitamin E. Symptoms for the gluten intolerant varies and it’s important to know and understand you body and what triggers create a problem for you. We believe, it’s significant to ensure that there is no exposure to gluten in any shape or form. For that reason, it’s also important to know which ingredients could indicate that gluten is present in said products. Please that we have created a list outlining the hidden glutens that are commonly found in organic body care (as well as non organic) and cosmetic formulations (we will also give you a list of hidden glutens commonly found in food too) so, how do we move forward to ensure a healthy lifestyle living with gluten intolerance? Educate yourself because knowledge is power. So do your research by starting at the store level, ready your labels. If you are confused by something you read on the label, contact the manufacturer for the details. Be diligent and thorough with your product selections (and dinning out). Investigating for your health! If it looks and sounds suspect, well....... When in doubt, best to use caution when it comes to your wellbeing (make sure that your gluten free body care products are actually gluten free). Lovely Is As Lovely Does.

SUMMER IS HERE AND SO ARE THE MOSQUITOES

Wow, summer is here and I’m so grateful for the lovely weather, but I can do without the mosquitoes. Yes, I love animals and truly try to respect all Gods wonderful creations, even the little annoying ones. You see they believe it’s their job to place a damper on our fun in the sun. To ruin our hanging out, interfere with us enjoying a nice breeze or our laying near the water just as the sun decides to set. For these little creatures, Tis the season to bite, they come out in full force to disturb us humans who they believe are having just too much fun; they’re determine to put a stop to the summer madness. So they bite away, leaving our skin covered with their marks, watching us frantically scratching desperately with little relief. I can here their sinister little laughs (this is my story and I say mosquitoes laugh at us, OK). They actually encourage their other little annoying friends to join in on their version of summer fun. Fleas and other itch-inducing insects hear the call and they too come out in full force to cause trouble. I’ve always been a magnet for mosquitoes and other bite-happy bugs, and my skin is super sensitive to bug bites.

Once, when I was living in my college dorm, my roommate and I discovered that one of our perimeter walls was host to a pretty extraordinary number of mosquitoes that decided to make the presence known at an ungodly hour in the morning. We were totally ambushed and so we spent the weekend itching, scratching and totally grossed out. It was our custom to wear as little clothing as possible and our excuse for shamelessly flaunting our bodies was due to the extremely hot weather but we both knew we had other motives for showing skin. Well, the truth be told, the male dorms were not far away and we had our eyes on a few good looking guys (the trials and tribulations of young women, right….). That weekend was ruined, our skin was a mess and we decided not to play baseball that weekend, later I discovered the guy of my dreams found the girl of his during that game. I declared war on mosquitoes that summer; they had ruined my life (a 19 year old girl’s point of view).

So what does all this have to do with Lovely Lady Products? LOS ANGELES (AP) — Whole Foods will pay about $800,000 in penalties and fees after an investigation found the grocery retailer was overcharging customers in California.

State and local inspectors discovered that purchased foods weighed less than the label advertised and the weight of salad bar containers wasn't subtracted at checkout, prosecutors said. In addition, the grocer sold prepared foods like kebabs by the item rather than by the pound as mandated by law.

This is the time of year when many Celiac Foundations and other related organizations make a huge effort to raise awareness about celiac disease throughout the country.

What is Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease can affect individuals in many different ways mostly due to the large amount of possible symptoms. It's a genetic autoimmune disease which damages the small intestine, which is part of the gut that digests and absorbs our nutrients. It's very difficult to absorb nutrients when the small intestine is damaged.

There are individuals with no noticeable symptoms, some with slight symptoms ranging from digestion trouble, stomach pain, bloating, gas and weight problems. And of course there's the serious symptoms for those with celiac disease, such as severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, sore muscle aches, malnutrition issues and many other uncomfortable issues. Gluten Free living is not just a choice or fade but for many a necessity an it's personal for LLP.

This is a fundamental element behind the formation of Lovely Lady Products since the founder suffers from many skin, hair and other autoimmune issues which are attributed to Celiac Disease. According to the Center for Celiac Research, it is estimated that at least 6% to 7% of Americans (around 20 million people) may suffer from some degree of gluten intolerance, even though some sufferers do not experience digestive problems. Symptoms can include eczema-like skin symptoms, brain fog, fatigue, fibromyalgia, malnutrition, digestive problems, migraines and infertility. What Is Argan Oil, The Origins of the Tree and How It Supports Your Skin

We wanted to discuss the orgins of The Argan Tree and to explain why we choose to build our brand around this amazing oil and the nutrients it provides, which comes from the nut of the Argan Tree. The tree is a relic of the Earth's Tertiary Period and can only be found in Southwestern Morocco now. This gift from nature can grow between 7 to 10 meters high and is believed to be a blessing due to its amazing characteristics. The Argan Tree can live from 150 to 200 years, longer than the olive and requires no cultivation. Should it die, it can lay dormant and revive itself in 7 years. It is tenacious, withering and fruitless during extended droughts; can handle very high temperatures, manages well at preventing erosion due to its strong root system, thus preserving fertility of the soil and definitely is great at dealing with the harshness of the desert. The appearance is often twisted and gnarled, allowing goats to clamber along its branches and feed on the leaves and fruits. Its fruit has a green exterior and reminds you of the olive, but it's large with a hard-shelled nut inside. The goats value this tree and they love to eat the fruit, the fleshy part is digested but the nut remains. These nuts are what the farmers use to extract oil from.

In the traditional Berber pharmacy, this noble and rich oil is intended for everyday use - for internal as well as external treatment. It is used also on babies to protect against external influences. Body oiling is also an ancient Indian ayurvedic medical treatment, providing energy to the body and enhancing one's wellbeing. The massage using argan oil, which needs to be gently applied, is considered to be helpful in losing weight, improves the firmness of the skin and relaxes the spine. Argan oil is easily absorbed into the skin, leaving greasy residue on the skin. It is also one of the most important oils for making the skin look younger and is used also for the treatment of various skin diseases. The high content of vitamin E (twice as high as in olive oil) has strong antioxidant properties. Vitamin E is important for the development and maintenance of the functions of the nerve and the muscle systems. Argan oil contains more than 80% mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have beneficial effects on rheumatic conditions and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, they neutralize free radicals, protect connective tissues, stimulate oxygen in the body, improve brain capacity and have a beneficial influence on the liver and digestion. The high content of linoleic acid helps to regulate the blood levels of cholesterol. Studies have shown that 16 g (2 table spoons) of argan oil satisfies the body's daily needs for essential linoleic acid, which is said to help to regulate the blood levels of cholesterol.

UNESCO, and enthusiasts excited by the oil's reputed anti-aging qualities have helped by creating a global market for the exotic oil, the unlikely alliance hopes to raise awareness about the inherent value of the trees, encouraging more careful grazing and stopping the local population from chopping the trees down for firewood. The people in the area are poor; as they now understand the value of the tree, they are protecting it. It has declared a 25,900-square-kilometer of land (between the Atlantic and the Atlas Mountains) an Argan reserve and provided money to manage the trees' preservation. Chefs and society matrons took up the cause, praising the culinary qualities of the oil and its anti-aging effect on the skin. There is also a ban against grazing in the trees from May to August, when the fruit ripens to a bright yellow and eventually the goats climb the trees, eat the fruit and expel the pits, which locals continue to collect.

At the Cooperative in Tiout, Berber women sit on the floor with rough rectangular stones between their knees cracking pits with rounded rocks. Each smooth pit contains one to three kernels, which look like sliced almonds and are rich in oil. The kernels are then removed and gently roasted. This roasting accounts for part of the oil's distinctive, nutty flavor. It takes several days and about 32 kilograms of fruit, roughly one season's produce from a single tree, to make only one liter of oil.

The cosmetic industry love’s that it’s rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids and is used for massage, facials and as an ingredient in anti-aging cream. The edible oil is extracted from roasted kernels. Most of the oil is bottled pure for cooking, as a dressing on salads, meat or fish or simply as a dip for bread. The Tiout cooperative produces about 5,000 250-ml bottles of the edible oil a year.

Sustaining Communities and Supporting Women of Morocco through the Berber Women Cooperatives: All argan sold today is produced by a women's cooperative that shares the profits among the local women of the Berber tribe. The cooperative has established an ecosystem reforestation project so that the supply of argan oil will not run out and the income that is currently supporting the women will not disappear. The money is providing health care and education to the local women, and supporting the entire community as a whole.[5] According to the Department of Water and Forests, Argan oil provides income for 3 million people in the southern part of the kingdom. The oil provides a total of 20 million workdays per year. Its operation is an income-generating activity and has always had a socio-economic benefit.

The vast majority of the production of argan oil passes through the women's cooperative of Argan oil. This program focuses on improving the working conditions of rural women’s economic activities, generating additional income and sustainable management of argan areas in the southwest of Morocco.

Co-sponsored by the Social Development Agency (SDA) with the support of the European Union, the UCFA (Union des Cooperatives des Femmes de l’Arganeraie) is the largest union of cooperatives for argan in Morocco. It comprises twenty-two cooperatives that are found everywhere in the region (e.g., Coopérative Al Amal, Coopérative Amalou N'Touyag, Coopérative Tissaliwine, Coopérative ArganSense, Coopérative Maouriga). These women come together to be better organized and thus guarantee a fair income through cooperatives, allowing them a better living environment and a dynamic local. Women cooperatives in Morocco work within a biosphere protected by UNESCO, which ensures its protection and reforestation.

Press-extraction

Now increasingly important for oil produced for sale, as the oil will keep 12–18 months and extraction is much faster. Using mechanical presses, mixing of the dough and water is unnecessary and the dough can be directly pressed. All other steps remaining unchanged, the oil is obtained in about 43% yield (calculated from the kernels) and only two hours are needed to get one liter of oil that preserves correctly.

I was just about to post my latest blog on gluten free body care and discovered a wonderful article on the Huffington Post Healthy Living Blog. However, after reading Celia's very interesting story, I decided this is definitely a better story to post for GlutenFree WheatFree Wednesday. Below is what she had to say:

I'm pretty accepting of the fact that I can't eat gluten-containing foods without suffering the consequences. I know that it will irk some people and result in dubious looks from others. I know that when restaurants charge more for gluten-free sandwiches it's because gluten-free bread costs them more than regular bread, and I am happy about the fact that they offer it at all rather than grumpy about the extra cost. (The difference in price is tax-deductible anyway.)

It frightens me sometimes in restaurants when I have to explain what I can't eat and why, because I don't trust that the crash course I gave the waiter was sufficient and that my food won't be cross-contaminated. But I don't get annoyed when someone doesn't know what celiac disease is if they listen to what I tell them.

For some reason, though, I'm still surprised when someone in the food service industry gets it completely wrong. I mean, gluten is a pretty hot topic right now. I can't imagine how someone who works in a restaurant has been so thoroughly sheltered from all gluten-related talk. Apparently, it's possible.

Here's what happened to me recently at a restaurant. While the waiter rattled off the list of available desserts, I mentally checked the ones that were usually gluten-free. Crème brûlée without the cookie, ice cream, sorbet. Great! Three options. Knowing that there were two gluten-free customers at the table, the waiter told us that none of the desserts were gluten-free. Not surprising. Desserts in restaurants like that usually weren't unless they were somehow modified -- like crème brûlée without the cookie -- and often the desserts were pre-made and unmodifiable. Not too long ago we had our 3rd annual organic certification audit via our USDA Organic Certifying Agent, Oregon Tilth. Over the years we have been so proud of all the knowledge we’ve gain and our constant efforts to over achieve with our standards/policies and procedures to ensure success at receiving approval to carry the USDA Organic Seal on our products so you can believe that what we say about our products are true. This year we did just that again, the organic inspector states this about Lovely Lady Products on the Handler Report Outline, “Excellent Facility Pest Management using mechanical and herbal methods. No pests. All materials for sanitation are organic or allowed to come in contact with organic products. This is a very clean operation.” Yes! We are here to please and serve using the talent God gave the owner to produce body care with the best skin supporting ingredients available all while running an efficient and clean organization.

However, despite all our efforts, big companies use their power to destroy so many hardworking small organizations trying to do the right thing for the consumer. Their money knows no boundaries using many organizations and groups to assistant them with their efforts to sabotage your right to know and the movement to produce truly clean products (buying store employees to interfere with sales growth, spread untruths about so many of us, and in some cases work to remove clean products completely off the retail shelves in favor of companies who produce toxic products). Many find out whom the vendors are that small companies are working with to assistant in making it difficult for small companies during the right thing to survive (this includes, phone service vendors, ingredient suppliers, website host, shopping cart vendors and sometimes higher authorities, corruption is alive and well). This is so sad, but honest to God, it’s true. How do we fight back, besides using God's Love, I’m not completely sure, but one way to start is via education. It’s so important to communicate with the consumer, explaining to them how important it is for them to be aware of what they are purchasing and whom they are purchasing their products from (how to get to the core of a person or organization's character, listen to what they say and then look at what they do or what is on their shelves and/or in their products). It's important to hold accountable individuals and organizations who would at all cost, sell you products that not only destroy you and your families health, but also the very air you breathe, as well as the planet, which is the only home we have.

Joy Behar Can't Be That Ignorant About Celiac Disease!

Joy Behar can't be that ignorant about celiac disease given the fact that she worked for years with Elizabeth Hasselbeck, a known celiac that's had many discussions about the disease on the television show, The View. So I believe it's obvious to those who know her and the show, that she is simply using the subject to draw attention to herself. Sad because, she's an attractive lady with a lot of talent, so why use ignorance to showcase one's self.

Because of her comments I've decided to tell a bit about what I deal with due to my intolerance of wheat and gluten. Everyday I work hard to keep from being exposed to wheat and gluten when I have to eat out or travel; but when I do and discover I have managed to get the stuff in my system, the following are issues that happen as a result of being exposed to wheat and gluten:

The symptoms can range from what may seen to be insignificant, such as my headaches, swollen glands, diarrhea, reflux, bloating and stomach pain, cramping, gas, itchy redness of the skin, eczema, hair loss and move on to more significant problems such as malabsorption, inflammation, anemia, and cause my other autoimmune disorders to flair up to say the least.

Even when I'm not traveling or eating out, I can and have found myself having problems with being exposed to wheat and gluten or problems that occur due to these issues. For example, I have Hashimoto Disease, as do many celiacs. When this was discovered I was placed on thyroid medication but continued to have many problems with taking this particular medication until I discovered that the generic thyroid medication was the cause of my problems. Although I have many other immune issues not taking the generic thyroid was the answer for some of my problems.

After many years of taking Synthroid with some improvements, about a year and a half ago, I started feeling tired, seeing swelling around my neck, puffy face, hoarseness, headaches, severe hair loss, weight gain, cold all the time, weakened adrenals, muscle weakness, hoarseness, dry skin issues with my feet and irregular menstrual periods. Many of these were the symptoms I had prior to finding out that I had Hashimoto Disease, so I just couldn't understand why this was starting to happen again until I discover that after many years of receiving my Synthroid from a Pharmacy called Pharmaca, someone had decided to change my prescription to generic (you see the gluten intolerant must be careful with the various generic brands of Levothyroxine, only two are gluten-free).

Moving forward nine months, my body was starting to get back to normal (whatever normal is for those of us dealing with gluten intolerance). However, once again I started feeling bad only to discover this time it was Good Day Pharmacy who took it upon themselves to switch my thyroid medication to generic even though I personally had them place it in their records that I was allergic. So once again I moved on, this time down the road to Walgreens Pharmacy and they were successful at giving me my first bottle of Synthroid, but the following month they had switched my medication to generic and the individual we spoke to blamed me and the Doctor's office for their error. The individual stated that we did not fill out paperwork properly in order for them to give us the proper prescription, which was not true or I never would have received the first bottle of Synthroid. It was also requested that it be placed in their files that I was allergic to the generic version and it was confirmed being done. So once again, I'm presently recovering from being exposed to generic thyroid medication, which has cause hair loss and many of the other issues to resurface (I'm starting to wonder if someone has it out for me, but I know God/The Universe has my back).

Many of the gluten intolerant have other autoimmune illnesses as a result of the damage that has been done to their system. In fact, many are sensitive to multiple ingredients like dairy, soy, corn, eggs, grains, etc. As you can see there are so many layers to this condition, so hopefully you can understand why it's both painful and upsetting to see and/or hear someone demonizing people who suffer from celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It's especially upsetting to watch celebrities use their platform to spill out misinformed and damaging information to create controversy in an effort to draw attention to increase their fame.

For many of us, gluten intolerance is not a fad diet and we are on a continuous journey for better health. Recently it was brought to my attention that the manufacturer of Synthroid is not able to guarantee gluten-free status due to cross contamination issues. PLANET THERAPY THURSDAY: LIVING GREEN MEANS NOT BEING MEAN

It’s Planet Therapy Thursday and today I’m going to move off the body care for a minute. The attack on the Paris community saddened my heart. I believe it also weakens the foundation of humanity, for we are all interconnected. Crime is a problem for all and the road to correcting this problem starts within each and every one of us. If a child is being bullied/abused at school (or in a home) and you know about it yet do nothing, you’re part of the degradation of society and the planet. If you know that someone is hurting another by maliciously attacking them, be it verbally or physically and you act as if it doesn’t exist you are part of the degradation of society and the planet. If you run a business within an industry and are profiting by trying to ruin another be it by means of malicious cyber attacks (or you’re aware of such crimes but do nothing because you stand to gain form it), you are a part of the degradation of society. Terrorist action doesn’t just start on foreign soil, it starts from within and how we respond to the small negative things that may not seem to be that big of a deal, at least that’s the lie we tell ourselves in order to justify the behavior. If someone accepts money to hurt another and the excuse that it’s simply business is used, it makes you no different then those who are considered to be terrorist (just another form of the behavior).

So if you find yourself watching the news, hearing the many concerns for our safety here on American soil, consider paying attention to the small minded criminal behavior of those you may know around you because that would surely be the same person for sale to compromise your safety, your families safety and the safety of a nation as well as the planet. We are all in this together and ignorance knows no boundaries so we must be our brother’s keeper. I believe you can’t live a green and organic lifestyle and ignore the ugliness that’s out there. Let’s all take a moment to send the planet some love and light.

Waterless Organic Body Care, Why?

As a manufacturer of waterless organic body care products, my perspective on the organic and gluten free body care industry could not be more practical. God knows, I certainly am not in the industry for the love of money, proven by the many hurdles and obstacles I've had to jump in order to survive in this industry, while trying to protect the company from the lions hanging around waiting to gobble up our efforts (one can feel a bit like Daniel). I know some may find my views eccentric but none could argue that I care about the environment and it is a known fact by most who know me that I want to share information and encourage consumers to learn about the ingredients they are placing on their body and why it's important to do so. It is my hope that you'll find this blog both useful and interesting enough to see the value in being aware of how your organic body care purchases effect not only your health but the wellbeing of the planet (food and household supplies are important too).

Why waterless organic body care? After several years of working within the industry, I still get asked the question why did I choose to go waterless with my organic and gluten free body care formulations? Well, there's three parts to answering this question. First, I care about my health and by using water in body care formulations, the demand to place toxic chemicals are a necessity. Second, because of my personal battle with skin and hair issues, I saw the need to create an effective gluten free and organic body care line that was clean and effective (I don't believe you can do so with the addition of water in body care formulations). Over the weekend I was researching material for today's blog topic and stumbled upon this interesting article written by Maura Henninger, a Naturopathic Physician. This article in very informative, the only area that I had some cause for concern was her comments on castor oil. It's not that it isn't a great oil, it depends on what you're using it for. Use caution when applying it to your face, it's thick and can clog pores. Another issue to be aware of about castor oil is that it can cause thickening and darkening of hair, so be aware of this in regards to areas above the lip and on the jaw and chin areas (but it sure is great for the eyebrows and eyelashes), personally, I like to use this oil for internal medicinal purposes. When Lisa, who works as a nurse at a nearby hospital, entered my office, her big, relaxed smile was the first thing I noticed. But her easy manner quickly fell apart when she started talking about what had overwhelmed her for the last five years: cystic acne that wouldn't budge, no matter what she did. Her skin had been beautiful - perfect -- all through puberty, high school and college; who'd never had to think twice about it. Until she turned 24 and great big, painful pimples started to turn up, starting on her jaw but soon spreading all per her face. She'd tried a number of approaches: a vegan diet, chemical peels, herbal supplements, and medications prescribed by her dermatologist. Nothing helped, and she was becoming increasingly desperate.
Adult-onset acne is a common complaint I see in my practice. The American Academy of Dermatology has cited studies that have shown that women after age 20, in particular, develop acne at greater rates: 50 percent between ages 20-29 and 25 percent between 49 and 49 . People who get acne in adulthood often have beautiful, perfect skin throughout adolescence, the period of time usually associated with fluctuating hormones and nasty breakouts. While women with acne caused by menses-related hormone imbalance are a familiar sight in my practice, I find that another culprit is all too common: gluten, and the havoc it wreaks on the gut that, in turn, affects the skin.
Let's start with a brief primer on basics of this tricky offender. Gluten is a protein in wheat and other grains (oat, barley, rye, spelt) that makes bread dough sticky. It's also in a number of places you wouldn't expect: imitation meats, soy sauce, ketchup and ice cream, among others. Because of its gumminess, it's also added to cosmetics, toothpaste and shampoo. It's all but unavoidable. Some people respond to gluten with symptoms like diarrhea, intense abdominal pain, fatigue and bloating -- all of which are severe and occur immediately after consuming a food containing gluten. This is often diagnosed as celiac disease, which is an autoimmune, inherited disorder in which the protein portion of gluten incurs an inflammatory response in the small intestine. Lovely Is As Lovely Does

What does "Lovely Is As Lovely Does" mean? We received several lovely comments from many of our fans when we asked this question quite a while ago, but the one we received offline from Kelsey Schomberger really embodied the premise behind Lovely Lady Products. Her thoughts on the subject are simply beautiful and moving, she brought tears to my eyes. I have been touched by this lovely spirit and it is my hope that you will to.

When I think of the word lovely, what feelings it provokes in me. Pleasant and sweet, a sort of admiration. Reminds me of love. I looked up the definition of this word and this is what I found: adjectives; love•ly, love•li•er, love•li•est. Full of love; loving. Inspiring love or affection. Having beauty that appeals to the emotions as well as to the eye. See Synonyms at beautiful. Enjoyable; delightful. Each and every soul is innately lovely. We each embody loveliness at our source, and this love is unconditional. It is the pure potential that is not influenced by expectations or standards. One could realize that they are a lovely being, an emanation of love, and that this love can be manifested in the actions and choices of one’s life. Lovely is as Lovely does. What does this mean to act in love? We could observe where this power would be well served. A starting place may be to shine that love on ourselves so we are ripe and ready to share the love with the world. Some things to consider: How do we act towards ourselves? What impact does our actions and choices have on our physical, emotional, and well-being? Does it reflect self-love? If we slow down and take into account how many decisions we make in a day regarding the things we come into contact with that leaves an impact on us, we can see how we treat ourselves and the attitude of self that we have. We can choose to act with love, take care of ourselves and be aware in our actions, taking ownership for our decisions and believing them. With this awareness the love for one’s lovely self is manifested in healthy self-care. One may stop to consider what food they’re eating and/or what products that they use, while being conscious of what goes into these things (knowing this will go into the body as well). We have responsibility in the choices we make. When we take care of ourselves we also inspire others that taking care of ourselves and our health is a valuable lovely act of compassion. If we act towards our own bodies and spirits with compassion, it starts to become natural to feel compassion towards others. With love as an inspiration in the way we run our lives, an unfolding of our loveliest qualities shine through. We are all lovely beings and in our actions we can share this love with our selves, others, and the planet. Lovely is as Lovely does!'
