Recycling and Re-using: Tea Containers

Dragon Pearl's Footprint Reduction Is One Step at a Time

A lot of our customers reuse their tea containers and just order refill bags, which are the inside bag that holds the tea airtight. The old containers work fine: once the tea is open, the container keeps it fresh while you use it. Air is the enemy! To be fresh, tea needs to keep from oxidizing. (Pu'erh tea is an exception to this rule.)

Other customers re-use the containers for other things since they're solidly-made, airtight food-grade containers that can be used to hold coffee, sugar and other foods, or used to hold items like pencils, sewing gear and nuts and bolts.

For our part, we use a lot of tea in our lab and serve thousands of samples to customers... so we go through a lot of containers.

We save all the containers from which we've remove the bags, and refill them with fresh tea when new stock comes in. If your container has been recycled, only the outside of the container is recycled! (The inside bag, of course, is original and unopened since being packed at the farms in Fujian.)

A sticker on the bottom the container shows when the new bag was added with a Best By date.

Super Natural Energy Tea Shots for the Utah Film Event

GROVER BEACH, CA - Dragon Pearl shipped a pallet of Super Natural Energy green tea shots to Park City for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The tea shots will provide endless energy for event staffers and attandees, and will also be used to make Purple Dragon cocktails for the celebs and guests.

What's the difference?

You may have heard us talk about trying theine instead of caffeine. Not that we don't like coffee, but most people don't realize that caffeine is in coffee and theine is in tea. They're almost the same molecule, but with almost imperceptible differences in the way the atoms are connected... and of course delivered in an entirely different chemical environment, as is theobromine in cocoa. And there are other kinds of alkaloids in nature, too.

Celebrities choose their favorite products at the Alive! Expo Emmy Awards pre-party

We went to the London Ballroom in West Hollywood to serve organic green tea and Super Natural green tea shots at the Alive Expo Emmy pre-party, where stars of popular TV shows are introduced to eco-friendly companies with all-natural products.

We served our fresh organic green tea, Super Natural tea shots and Purple Dragon cocktails. Pretty soon the room was filled with glamorous people drinking Purple Dragons, and everyone kept coming back to say how great they felt after drinking at least one green tea shot!

...and the Purple Dragons were extremely popular!

JD Project Takes Multiple Awards

Judah, Chris and Dave served tea shot samples today at the New Times 2010 Music Awards. As usual, we set up our tent and our Dragon display... but this time was different.

We were serving our new Super Natural green tea shots, and we felt a lot of love! People commented on how they loved the flavor and ingredients, and many on the way back remarked "I feel good!" We actually sold some cases on the spot.

A terrific band, JD Project adorned the San Luis Obispo Mission courtyard with their blues music and had us rockin'. Memorable and stylish under their own modest method, they played several great tunes, including the award-winning Freight Train. Watch it here:

Making the Strongest Green Tea

Here's a quick video clip of part of the manufacturing process-- one of the last steps, which is packing the finished bottles into 12-packs.

The process takes about 36 hours to complete, starting with brewing the green tea with as many leaves as we can get into the water and infusing the tea into purified water until it's a dark brown concentrate.

Then the fresh-brewed super-tea is pasteurized, mixed with fresh blueberry, purple grape, pomegranate, and acai berry juices.

Dragon Pearl's Tea Shots Featured as a Healthy Alternative

Nutritionist Aaron Snyder was featured on San Diego's Channel 6 yesterday. He discussed energy drinks and energy shots with reporter Marc Bailey, and talked about the effects of too much caffeine on the body, especially diabetics.

Aaron says that drinks like Monster, Red Bull and 5-Hour Energy are basically a rip-off that give you way more caffeine than needed to stimulate the body, and make you crave sweet and fatty foods.

He also discussed Dragon Pearl's Super Natural Tea Shots, saying that three cups of green tea is the ideal "lift" for the human body, providing the maximum dose of natural caffeine for humans. Why Steep Tea at Lower Temperatures?

Most tea experts agree that boiling water is too hot for tea. Theoretically, there's an ideal and precise temperature that each variety of tea should be brewed at.

Black tea, which is fully oxidized, is most forgiving with hot water and is not usually affected as much as green, jasmine, oolong and white teas.

For oolong tea, we usually recommend about 180 degrees, and for green, jasmine and white teas, maybe closer to 170.

But don't worry too much about it. Far more important is having fresh tea that's been kept airtight. Tea will steep at any temperature, but hotter water infuses faster. If you steep at 170 or 190, it's probably fine.

We recommend electric boiling pots. You can either boil the water and then add a little cold water, or catch it as it makes noise but before it boils.

If you have to use the microwave to heat your water, heat the water and then pour it over the tea leaves... it's best not to put the tea leaves in the microwave because the process is to pour hot water over the leaves. Steeping cups are the perfect way to do that.

The main idea is that perfect tea flavor changes when too hot for too long, because it cooks and loses the fresh, raw aftertaste.

New 2-Ounce Green Tea Shots Are Extremely Powerful

We spent the last few days producing the very first Super Natural Energy tea shots... possibly the strongest liquid tea extract ever made.

Super Natural tea shots are made using potent organic green tea called Mao Feng ("fur tip"), the most powerful green tea we have ever tested. We decided to brew the tea with as many leaves as can possibly fit while being covered with hot water!

Judah and Scott watch the tea infusion carefully.

After being mixed with superjuices, the tea shots are flash-pasteurized
and slightly pressurized for freshness, then filled into baby wine bottles.

Circular labels are dropped onto the bottles, then hot air shrinks them tightly onto the surface.

Dave, Judah and Leon had the privilege of meeting Forbes Riley today, and serving tea. She fell in love with the Ti Kwan Yin oolong, of course, and we also served fresh Dragon Pearl Mao Feng Green tea.

We exchanged new product demos, too. Here's Forbes' cool new exerciser, the Spin Gym. It's an amazing muscle-toning string with weights... very easy to use and fun.
