It has been awhile since I've posted anything! I've been trying to figure out exactly why I stopped and I think it was because my interests starting moving in another direction. For one, I became an avid couponer for a number of years and this didn't seem like the platform to share that shift in direction with. I may have been wrong. I'm currently in a season where I'm starting to revisit my love for all things beauty and organization! I feel a pull to start blogging again, but the game has changed so much since I've been gone. Sigh. I have some more sifting and visualizing to do before I make a move, but I feel something is coming! Whether it be on this platform or another, I feel the tug. We shall see what comes next!

Microblading and Dark Skin (Initial Appointment, First Touchup and Second Touchup)

I'm not going to spend a lot of time discussing what microblading is because there are a ton of articles online about it. My job here is to give you some visuals of what happens with darker skin when it's microbladed.

DISCLAIMER: If you have low self-esteem or are always worrying and wondering if people are looking at you, microblading ain't for you!!!!!! It's a process that completely transforms the way you look and for the first week or so, it ain't pretty. I'm just here to warn you...

I had the procedure done in June, had my follow up appointment 6 weeks later and then had a second touchup 5 months later. I probably could have gone a little while longer before the second touchup, but I knew I was going to be gone from Miami for awhile so I went ahead and had it done. Please keep in mind that the longer between the sessions, the more likely you are to pretty much go through the 2-3 week healing process like you did after your initial session. My 6 week touchup healed quickly and I did not experience the severe scabbing and flaking or even severe darkness like I did the first time. However, given that my second touchup came 5 months later, it's pretty much like going through the entire process all over again!

In terms of the pain level, the would give the initial session a 1 out of 5. The area had been allowed to numb for about 1.5 hours, so I pretty much did not feel a thing. The first touchup session the cream probably only set for 30-40 minutes and I felt every.single.stroke. On the pain meter, I would give it a good 4 out of 5. It was bearable, but it was extremely uncomfortable. For the second touchup, I would give it a 4.5 out of 5. I could not wait for it to be over. It wasn't so painful that I wanted to scream, but I was praying the entire time!

The mistakes I made:

I was unable to keep it from getting wet within the first 48 hours each time. I sweat a lot (it's not cool in Miami in June or July) and had other things going on so I was not able to completely follow the directions. I do think this impacted the hair strokes because they all just blended together. I think it looks perfectly fine, but if you want good definition, don't get them wet for at least the first 2 days.

I use a lot of face oils and I feel like they contributed to my brows fading a little quicker than they should. I'm going to not use the oils around my brows after this last touchup and see if they last longer.

I didn't put sunscreen on them after they healed when I was out in the sun, but I definitely will this time.

Microneedling or Microderm Needling and Dark Skin

So, I decided to give this little contraption a try. I started out with the .25mm needle and moved on up to the 1.0mm needle a few weeks later.

The .25mm needle was amazing. It was quite uncomfortable the first time I used it, but on the second run, I actually somewhat enjoyed it! The picture below was taken immediately after using the .25mm needle. Who knew a brown-skinned beauty could turn this red!

Once my face calmed down and wasn't so irritated, I applied some really great Argan Oil and let me tell you! My face was baby bottom soft! Seriously! The next day I went to work and made my co-worker rub my face because I couldn't believe how soft it was. I used it again a few days later with similar results. The roller is an amazing exfoliator! I did have some peeling, but I wasn't bothered by it since the Retinol I use causes my face to peel as well. Absolutely amazing results!

Fast forward to a few weeks later and I decided to purchase the 1.0mm needled roller. It felt no worse than the .25 needle! I was expecting the worse, but was pleasantly left disappointed.

So..here we are a week and a half after using the 1.0mm needle and we have a problem. Le sigh. My face does not look amazing like it looked not too long ago. It looks like I am now dealing with Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). For us people of color, when there is trauma to the skin (the needles can puncture the epidermis and/or dermis), our bodies send melanin to the location which causes these dark spots. The purpose of microneedling is to increase the production of collagen. However, in us sometimes darker folks, it comes with some good ole PIH. Oh joy!

I'm hoping that it's temporary and will fade quickly. However, I will be using my Retin-A every night to speed up the process.

I will probably use the .25mm needle again since it doesn't penetrate like the 1.0mm does. It really did help with product absorption and serves as a great exfoliator. However, I'm going to wait a bit before I pick up the needles again!

Now, I'm one of those weird people who already has pretty nice and full lips, but I always say that they could be better, much like I feel like I could be taller although I'm 5'9". Anyhoo, so I'm watching this video in disbelief and immediately want to try it! It takes me a few stores to find the paste, but alas, on the third try, I succeeded. I must preference this by saying that I have never had Wasabi a day in my life and I've definitely never smelled it. As soon as I opened the tube, I was already questioning this decision. So, I smeared it on my lips and set the timer for one minute, as instructed in Farah D's video.

The Before:

10 seconds in it's burning like crazy. Um....I want out of this right now! I'm panicking thinking that it's going to leave me with swollen, red and irritated lips that are going to be stuck this way for at least a day and there's no way to explain to people what happened without them looking at me crazy.

Well, after the minute, I wipe this stinky, stingy mess away and immediately apply some shea butter to moisturize (after trying this out, I don't really know if a moisturizer is necessary). So, I do see some plumpness and the right and left side of my top lip appeared more symmetrical. However, it's nowhere near as amazing as her results were in the video. I want amazing results!! Lol.

First Round Results:

So......I wait another 20 minutes or so and try it again (hangs head in shame. Always doing too much). Once again it's stinging like crazy and I'm already regretting this decision. Set the timer again for a minute, wipe off and there's definitely a difference. I'm quite impressed, but not completely sold. In the video she states that the results last all day for her, but for me, I would give it an hour tops.

Drumroll to the following day. I decide to give it another try in the morning. This time I let it sit for 90 seconds. I slather it on and I don't feel any tingling, stinging, nada. I keep waiting and waiting and waiting. After the 90 seconds, I go to wipe it off and now it's stinging like crazy. I don't even know how to explain this because it makes no sense at all. I look in the mirror and it's just meh. I don't really notice much of a difference the same way I did the night before on the first try. I decide not to try it again and just chuck it up that it's not going to work for me as well as it worked for her and probably some others. I was a little disappointed, but also thankful that it wasn't really something that I needed in the first place. I would love to hear from other folks who have given it a try and had success...or not.

I have worn the Bobbi Boss African Roots Bantu Twist for awhile now. To be completely honest, I don't have anything really negative to say about this hair. As with most hair, the older it becomes, the more tangled it becomes, but it's nothing that a pair of scissors cannot handle! I also wore this hair on vacation where I submerged it in water on two different occasions and had no problem. In fact, it made the curls more defined and tamed it a bit. I was quite impressed. My local BSS has stopped carrying this product (they said it's being discontinued by the manufacturer and I pray this is not true), but I've been able to purchase it here for $6.99/pack. Thank you Sistawigs!

Protective Styles: Crochet Braids with Harlem 125 Durban Twist

My love for crochet braids continues. After using the Naffy Braid for awhile, I ventured out and tried Harlem 125 Durban Twist and loved the results. The hair can either be worn straight out of the pack or separated to make it bigger and longer. I must say that this hair is HUGE especially if you don't set it with hot water. I normally would come home, braid it in about 8 large braids or so and then dip them in hot water. The curl held pretty much for the duration of the six weeks or so that I wore the hair. Sometimes I would also flat iron it and just wear it straight. The only downfall of doing this is that the hair becomes very corse and hard to manipulate.

I will say that this hair has a true curl pattern while the Naffy Braid did not. You could really get away with not setting it if you want it to remain large. Below are some pictures with the Harlem 125 Durban Twist hair.

Um...for those of us non-makeup folks who do not understand how to apply foundation and do not understand why there are so many options, etc., this is THE PERFECT solution! I don't wear foundation because I do not know how to color match and because there are very few folks whose makeup I've seen in person and thought it looked completely natural.

This product looks like your natural skin, but better. It's slightly dewy, which will come in handy in the winter months coming up (I have it in Chestnut 09). I top it with a little bit of the Warmth All-Over Face Color. It takes me 30 seconds in the morning and I'm out the door! I have received soooo many compliments from people about the glow that I have and how my skin looks simply beautiful. I highly recommend this to everyone!!!!!!

Sooooo...it has been awhile since I've posted anything. There has been so much going on and I've kinda gotten away from beauty blogging because I don't buy many products anymore. I have an Ipsy subscription and cannot tell you the last time I used anything out of one of my bags. My passion is now...couponing!!! I am nowhere near extreme, but hopefully one day! I love clipping coupons, sorting them, making my lists, etc. It is one of the best stress relievers that I've discovered outside of working out. I do not plan on turning this into a coupon blog because there are so many of them, but I may drop a few easy tips that anyone can follow and some sites that are extremely helpful, as well as people and groups to follow on Facebook and Instagram. I received this spray in one of my Ipsy bags. I've used their face wash in the past at the recommendation of my dermatologist and loved it! There really aren't any cons about this product. I actually like it a lot better than MAC Fix+ or the rosewater+gylcerin mix that I normally use because it doesn't leave my face sticky to the touch and isn't shinny. It leaves the skin feeling amazingly moisturized! Definitely a must add to the line up!

Last year I wrote a blog post about crochet braids. At the time I was using Bobbi Boss Afro Twist hair, but have since tried a few different types of hair. One of my favorites is the Nubian Naffy Braid. This is the most natural synthetic hair ever! I love it because it blends in seamlessly with my natural hair and allows for some leave out. Pros:

Reasonably priced: $29.00
Amazing packaging
Easy to use
Does what it says
Didn't smudge or flake after a long workout
Great pigmentation
Easy to wash off

Cons:

Time consuming
Lengthened my lashes, but did nothing for the volume
Lashes shrunk as the day progressed

While there are clearly more pros than cons, this product is great for those who don't mind applying mascara every day and applying multiple layers. However, I am not that girl! I apply my individual lashes and they last for weeks! This was a headache for me every morning having to apply the products. Additionally, it didn't do much in terms of volume. This was disappointing. If there comes a time when I will only rely on mascara, this will be my go-to product, but for me, it was just too much work to do everyday.

I've been meaning to do a review on this product for a long time! I received it one of my Ipsy bags sometime back. I absolutely love it! I use it no more than twice a week with my Olay Professional spin brush. The main reason that I love this product is because it does not irritate my skin and I haven't experienced any adverse effects. Because I use Retin-A Micro nightly and it tends to make my skin peel, which leads to a build up of dead skin, this scrub gets rid of all of it. It's not too harsh, but I make sure that the night I use it, I do not turn around and apply the Retin-A.

Sometime back I wrote a post on one of my absolute favorite beauty products of all time (and it still remains to this day!) which is the Hawaiian Tropic Oil Free Faces Bronzing SPF 25. It's difficult to find the perfect bronzing lotion or powder that doesn't look like mud, or that you stuck your face in a pile of glitter. Although I am brown skin and already have a nice glow, there are sometimes when I'd like a bit more, especially if I'm going out in the evening. Since I'm not a huge fan of wearing foundation, I just need something to even my skin out while also giving me that nice glow. Self-tanners are also great for camouflaging stretch marks! Below are some products that I've used and had great results from.

Australian Gold's spray gel with instant bronzer is one of my favorites just because it smells good! Honestly. I usually put it on over my regular sunscreen when going to the pool or the beach. It does give a nice glow to the skin, and what makes it even better is that it's a spray! How easy is that!

Those times when I need color instantly, I grab L'Oreal Paris' Sublime Bronze One Day tinted gel. Now, if you're putting this on your face, make sure you do so when you're already dressed. This will stain (especially your hands)! However, I love it because you can layer it for deeper color. Just make sure to let it dry between coats. I do not recommend you layer it too much because it will have you looking like an umpa lumpa. Seriously.

This one is my favorite for long-lasting color. I put it on at night and wake up with beautiful skin! It doesn't stain my sheets, or my hands, and dries instantly. I reapply every night for the first few nights and then give it a rest. One of the best things is it's very creamy (not at all runny) and smells yummy!

The Australian Gold instant bronze self tanning lotion was the first product that I purchased. I'm not fond of the smell, and it's a bit runny. This may be better for those with lighter brown skin because it doesn't add too much color.

Product Review: Que Bella Goji Berry Mask

As someone who uses a retinoid or an AHA nightly, it's very, very important that I keep my skin moisturized all the times. Since these products are exfoliants, you'll find your skin peeling or flaking at the most inconvenient of times! And since I can't make it to a spa everyday (sigh), putting on a face mask a few nights a week not only pampers my face, but it also makes me feel pampered, relaxed and luxurious. While I am still completely dedicated to one of my favorite masks, Sarah McNamara's Miracle Revival Mud, I'm also branching out a bit to find other alternatives.

One that I've found and absolutely love is Que Bella's Anti-Ageing Goji Berry mask. It hails from the U.K. and is supposed to be made with a minimum of 80% natural ingredients (actually, all of their masks make this claim). It's a very creamy, rich-feeling mask that smells great, but isn't overpowering. It leaves my face absolutely glowing, but not oily-feeling or looking. One of the best things about the Que Bella line is that they are available at Target for a little over, and under, $2.00.

They have such a range of products that there is something for every one of your needs! The product also stores well in a Ziploc bag since it's highly unlikely that you will need the entire package for one use. It wasn't at all dried out after being stored for about three weeks!

The next product that from the line that I'll be trying is the Deep Cleansing Aloe Vera Cream mask!

Black Radiance Liquid Lip Color Review

The Black Radiance Liquid Lip Colors in Amber Rose and Sandy Nude are two more additions to my recent lip color purchases. The colors go on creamy and are a nice mix between a gloss and a lipstick. They are not sticky and can be full coverage or medium depending upon how much you apply. Their longevity is the same as any other product that I've used that doesn't state "up to x amount of hours." You'd have to reapply after eating, etc. However, they are definitely worth purchasing!

Covergirl's Queen Collection Lip Color in "See Red" is a nice mix of coral, red and a little orange. It goes on extremely smooth and is long-lasting. It's definitely a statement color, so no need to jazz up the rest of your face too much! Keep it simple! It's definitely a summer and fall lip color that I'd recommend for us brown skin girls!

Review: Masque Bar by Look Beauty Brightening Sheet Mask

I saw this mask in Target and decided to give it a try. For only $9.99, you get three masks that are individually wrapped. The claim is that they will "reduces dark spots and various pigmentation. irregularities for brighter, more even complexion. Hydroquinone-free facial sheet is effective on all. tones. Leaves skin feeling smoother and looking. more translucent."

Well, since I've only tried them a few times, I can't say whether their claims are true or false. I will say that it did leave my skin moisturized and brighter, even if only for a few hours. The mask is pretty wet, so a lot of the excess I just put on my neck. It did want to peel away from my face so I don't suggest moving around a lot while wearing it. I finally just laid down and took a nap! I was just happy that it didn't break me out! I would definitely recommend for anyone who needs instant brightening for a night out. I'm not sure how it will compare to my long-term favorite Sarah McNamara mask, but I will probably buy it again for those times when I just need a quick boost.

I've been trying out the CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion for about a week and so far, so good. It hasn't broken me out and it's one of the only products with Zinc Oxide that doesn't leave me with that white, pasty, ghostly glow. It goes on very smooth and leaves my skin moisturized for hours. Not really a fan of the parabens, but there are many other things that cause cancer faster, so I'm not so concerned. I think with prolonged use, it will definitely improve my skin. Field Trip!!!! Duke Chapel

Although I am a native to Durham, I have only been inside Duke Chapel twice in my life. Once was during a field trip in middle school and the other time was for a funeral. The staff in the building that I work in decided to take a little field trip to the chapel last week to climb the tower. Although the aerial views of Durham were amazing, I think I was most in awe of the Chapel's 77 stained-glass windows that depict biblical characters and stories. Each window told a different story. I will definitely be going back to take a closer look. We learned that there is a man out of Virginia that cleans the windows. He takes down one section at a time, takes the window apart, cleans each piece, and then puts them back together. Each window takes around eight months to complete. I think we can say that his job is secure!

Awhile back, I wrote a post on the power of apple cider vinegar. I've recently started mixing the acv and white grapefruit juice. If the juice is cold, you really can't taste the vinegar. I mix 4 oz. of juice with 2 tablespoons of acv. The combination doesn't taste too tart and it is definitely an appetite suppressant. It's supposed to help with weight loss, high blood pressure and other ailments. Definitely worth a try.

I'm in love with these lip glosses! They are long-lasting, smell delicious and aren't at all sticky. I purchased them from Walmart for maybe $2.99 each. I was only disappointed with the Blackberry because once applied, wasn't as dark as I expected. I may try putting concealer on my lips first and then applying. It ended up being more of a red color than deep purple. I definitely recommend you add these to your cart!

Review: Origins Zero Oil Moisturizer

I've been sampling (and consistently using) Origins Zero Oil Moisturizer for a few weeks now. I must say that I really like this product. A little goes a long way, and it doesn't leave my face oily, nor does it slack when it comes to its moisturizing properties. I don't have overly oily skin (the Origins site says it's best for oily skin) and it still works really good. This will come in handy during the summer months when you don't want to deal with an oily face on top of a sweaty one:-). The price tag is $26.50 for 1.7 fl. oz.
