The nation's largest cereal maker, Kellogg Co., is making controversial claims that their popular cereal, Krispies, boosts children's immune systems. Kellogg responds to critics by saying that increased vitamins means the cereals promote good health. The food maker said Wednesday that given the public attention to swine flu, it has decided to phase out the message from its packages.

9/11 Rescuers Twice As Likely to Have Asthma

Lack of Health Insurance Endangers Children

According to research from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the lack of health insurance may have contributed to approximately 17,000 deaths in hospitalized children. When comparing death rates, researchers found that uninsured children were 60% more likely to die in the hospital than those with insurance. According to the Hopkins researchers, the study, published Oct. 30 in the Journal of Public Health, is one of the largest ever to look at the impact of insurance on the number of preventable deaths and the potential for saved lives among sick children in the United States.

Antibiotic Use During Pregnancy and Birth Defects

Researchers studied antibiotics in pregnancy and found common drugs used to treat urinary infections were associated with birth defects. Reassuringly, penicillin, the most-used antibiotic in early pregnancy, appears to be the safest. Mothers of babies with birth defects were more likely than mothers with healthy babies to report taking two types of antibiotics during pregnancy: sulfa drugs (brand names include Thiosulfil Forte and Bactrim) and urinary germicides called nitrofurantoins (brand names include Furadantin and Macrobid).

Migraine with aura is associated with a twofold increased risk of ischemic stroke, finds a study published on BMJ.com. Migraines with Aura occurs when temporary visual or sensory disturbances are experienced before or during a migraine headache. The findings show that further risk factors for stroke among patients with migraine are being a woman, being young, being a smoker, and using contraceptives containing estrogen.
