If you do not plan, you will not be as successful as you could be. That is true in business and in your personal life. Planning is about looking at your options, about making decisions, and about being in control.

Planning is a formal process that requires a commitment of time, energy, and thought. You would think that everyone in business knows how to plan. Unfortunately, that is only partially true. Are there people who know how to do a business plan, or succession plan, or a strategic plan? The answer is yes. If they do not and the plan is critical to the company’s success, they will go to the marketplace and hire someone who does know how to complete the plan. This is not where I see a weakness in planning.

The weakness in planning is with the day-to-day activities of the people on the front-line, the people who manage other people. In this regard, company size does not matter. If you have less than 10 employees or more than 10,000 employees, the planning weakness can still exist.

Description of the Problem

The problem is with the undertakings that managers must accomplish that are not simple repetitive tasks. Undertakings like delegation, coaching, goal setting, and performance management.

Although, management roles and responsibilities can vary from industry to industry they all have one thing in common. That is, the manager’s ability to plan an undertaking that has a high degree of risk that is not traditionally considered something you would spend your time planning for before you took action.

Where formal processes exist for things like strategic planning, formal processes may not exist for some of the things managers must accomplish on a daily basis. To reduce the risk of failure, managers may need to create their own planning process and then be willing to use the insight tool they created on an as needed basis.

A Solution

Sally wants to delegate one of her current responsibilities to a subordinate. Currently, she spends five or six hours a week overseeing what is entered into the CRM by the sales team. Because of her workload, she is sometimes not as diligent as she would like to be. The risk associated with delegating this task is high because if the information is not up-to-date and accurate it will negatively affect the monthly sales forecast, and that would make her look bad in front of her boss. She decided to do some planning before she scheduled the meeting with her subordinate.

Sally recognized that planning means she has to schedule the time to sit down and go through the formal planning process. She decided to use the Delegation Planner, an insight tool that she designed just for that purpose. The tool is a one-page Word document that looks like a form. In a little less than forty minutes, she completed the Delegation Planner. Below is a description of the steps she completed.

Describe the task you decided to delegate.
Why do you want to delegate this task?
Whom will you delegate this task to?
What are the benefits to this person for taking on this new responsibility?
What is the timeframe for completing this plan?
Write the training program for teaching the individual to do the work.
What is the target date for completing the training program?
When will you hold a meeting with the individual to explain your intentions?
When will you hold one or more supervision meetings after training?
What is the target date to release the person from training and oversight?

Some of the tasks you must accomplish are not frequent and repetitive. You should evaluate those assignments for risk. If the risk is there, do not wing it. Schedule time to plan for what you must accomplish. The result will be well worth your time, energy, and thought.

You can use variations of keywords and even link across sentences to maintain quality. Google ignores punctuation marks and the words ‘is’ ‘the’ ‘at’ ‘in’ and other small words.

A trick that I use to create a variety of back links is I include the words ‘click here’ with my keyword. For example, one of my main keywords is ‘press release writing services', so I’ll write something like
this, ‘click here for press release writing services’. It’s that easy!

You can keep track of your back linking strategies by using a spreadsheet to list all the variations of your keywords and the links they point to on your site. You have to keep in mind that it takes a few months for you to get results from your search engine optimization efforts.

Finally, don’t rush it. For your SEO campaign to be successful you have to slowly build back links with anchor text over time. Give yourself at least three months to judge whether a certain campaign is effective or not and whatever you do, don’t build two-hundred back links a day!

3. Tail – The most specific and complex keyphrases which may be about 4-6 words long. Even less people are searching for these keyphrases and there are few other authors writing on each subject (e.g. “weight loss for men with diabetes,” “retirement planning in a recessive economy,” “installing kitchen cabinets for less than $5,000″).

People doing searches further along the tail are the most invested in the subject and they’re looking for very specific information.

The long tail is where your expertise comes in the most handy. It’s where the most detailed articles come from and where you’ll be able to accurately target the types of people looking for your content.

Getting Max Exposure

However, don’t focus solely on writing for the tail of the distribution. You want to have a wide range of articles covering a lot of different keywords and keyphrases to maximize your exposure.

Probably the most complicated thing about writing for the long tail is getting past the counter-intuitive nature of it. Writing for a smaller audience actually gives you a higher click-through rate (CTR) for your articles. The audience reached with more specific keyphrases is already very interested in the subject and will be interested in additional information.

So, take advantage of this information now and do some keyword research to lay out the long tail distribution for your next set of high-quality, original articles.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, during the American Civil War, formally proclaiming the freedom of all slaves held in areas still in revolt.

The issuance of this Proclamation clarified and strengthened the position of the Union government, decreased the likelihood of European support of the Confederacy and, as the Union armies extended their occupation of the southern states, brought freedom to the slaves in those states.

Consider including a subtitle

It is also more efficient to use links "deep" to specific pages of your website, instead of just linking to the main page. This increases both the classification of the linked page as your entire site. Lastly, not only put links on the words 'click here' - linking keywords or descriptive text. The descriptive anchor text tells the search engines about what is taking and why it is relevant.

Includes multimedia whenever possible

The media not only make your press release stand out against journalists and readers, embedded images increase the range of your statement in the search engines. Google Images receives a massive amount of search traffic and really brings readers to your statement. Optimize your images to make sure they are clear of file names that accurately describe the image and incorporate a keyword (eg 'Importante.jpg product name' instead of 'DSC_1234.jpg'). Includes a descriptive title for any media file that you distribute. Do not forget to include your logo on your statement, since it is the image that most likely arise if someone searches for your brand name directly.

It seems like Paula Broadwell is in trouble because of her affair with David Petraeus. Her government security clearance was suspended temporarily because of the affair and certain classified documents that were found on her laptop.

I always admired General Petraeus and I still do. He’s achieved a lot in his life and he’s served our country honorably. If it were anyone else there really wouldn’t be an issue about his affair, but since he was the director of the CIA he was held to a higher standard.

Paula Broadwell, whose affair with CIA Director David Petraeus led to his resignation, has had her government security clearance suspended pending the outcome of ongoing investigations, two U.S. officials with direct knowledge told CNN's Barbara Starr.

A U.S. official previously said that Broadwell, an Army Reserve officer, did have some kind of security clearance.

Petraeus resigned from his CIA director post last week after an FBI investigation revealed he had an extramarital affair, an investigation that also prompted questions about whether his paramour, Broadwell, had inappropriate access to classified information.

Investigators have found classified information on a computer belonging to Broadwell, a law enforcement source told CNN national security contributor Fran Townsend. It was not clear if this was a computer seized at her home Monday night or one she had previously given to authorities when she cooperated back in September.

Earlier, John Nagl, a retired military officer who worked for Petraeus for years, said that Petraeus insists he never shared classified information with Broadwell. He spoke to him via e-mail on Monday and was authorized by Petraeus to talk.
