There are two different types of TPMS systems, direct and indirect. A direct TPMS system has a sensor actually attached to the wheel or valve stem that takes pressure readings. An indirect TPMS system actually works with your anti-lock brake system to count rotations per mile of each wheel compared to the others. The biggest problem with indirect is that it is not terribly accurate and will not indicate low pressure if all the tires are losing pressure equally.

What does it do?

In a direct TPMS system the sensor detects if the tire pressure on any of your tires goes 25% or more below it’s recommended level. If that happens it sends a signal to your car’s computer, which in turn switches on a dashboard warning light. There is usually a general warning light and a diagram that shows specifically what tire the warning light is talking about. This is to alert the driver that a tire has low pressure and needs to be checked.

Why TPMS is Important

The reason it is so important to know if your tire pressure is low is that it can help you avoid major accidents. It puts a lot of stress on a tire when it is driven with incorrect pressure that could cause the tire to fail while driving at high speeds. Under inflated will also increase the distance it would take you to stop in the case of an emergency stop especially on a wet road.

Having your tires at a proper pressure will also save you money. Properly inflated tires wear more evenly and will last longer. You will also get slightly better gas mileage with tires at the proper PSI and over time that could make a big difference!

Do I Have To Buy New TPMS Ever?

Short answer is yes.
They do have a battery built into them, which will eventually die and have to be replaced. Most systems you cannot just replace the battery and would usually have to replace the whole device but on the upside, the batteries will usually last for years and the devices are not prone to damage. Here at OriginalWheels we get many customers who ask if they have to replace their TPMS when they purchase something like a late model Kia rim. Generally your old TPMS will still work just fine unless you just got incredibly unlucky and hit it just right.

Where Can I Get TPMS Sensors and Can I Install Them Myself?

There are many used parts shops that sell used sensors, keep in mind they have a limited life so getting them used may not last as long as a new one. If you’re lucky and enjoy picking through junkyards you might be able to find a good one still attached to a scrapped wheel. The most common option though is to just order it through your local dealer but it may cost you anything from $50 to $275 per sensor.

You will need to bring the sensors to your local tire shop for installation and programming. Although you may be able to install it onto the wheel yourself you need a special device to sync and program the sensor for your specific vehicle and tire pressure. They have to be specially programmed to avoid vehicles getting confused by other people’s sensors.

Why is the Hollander Number even used?

Often times people are confused as to why people even use a Hollander number rather than just factory part numbers. That is a VERY good question, but there is also a REALLY good reason why. For a start, factory part numbers can be long and difficult to memorize. Hollander numbers are only 4 to 5 numbers long making them much easier to memorize and less likely to be confused when communicating them between people. The other major reason that people use these generic part numbers created by Hollander Catalogue is that oem parts (especially oem wheels) tend to have multiple part numbers describing the exact same item.

Why would oem parts have multiple part numbers?

Often when parts are manufactured in multiple locations, through multiple years or batches they have unique part numbers. This could be especially confusing for a part that is used for a long period of time because there could be four to five oe part numbers that all describe the same thing. Trying to find a replacement part would be extremely confusing if you had to know all of the different part numbers that can be used for the one part. Hollander has simplified this. They assign one number to describe all of those oem numbers that could be used to replace the part. Here’s an example..

Hollander Part# 5044 (Describes an older GMC wheel)
GM# 12356740   ’95-02
GM# 12361578   ’96-97
GM# 12366741   ’96-97

Regardless of which part number is on the back of the wheel all three wheels look exactly the same, fit exactly the same, are made of the same materials and are all even manufactured by GM. Imagine if you needed this wheel and you had to call around to shops looking for that wheel with any of those different possible oem part numbers.
With the hollander number they are able to cross reference the single part number with anything else that would interchange for that same exact part. This simplifies everyone’s job!

Does Everyone Use Hollander Numbers?

Most used parts retailers use Hollander numbers to identify their parts but dealerships have their own set of numbers they reference. Some companies use variations of Hollander numbers to help describe the part a little bit more. Often times while shopping for wheels you may see a part like ALY5309U85. This is still using a Hollander number. The “5309″ is the part number the “aly” is describing the material, for this is an aluminum alloy wheel, and the “u85″ is referring to the finish, this one being a chrome finish. If you were to find Wheel Part: #5309 on OriginalWheels.com it would show that it’s a 22″ Chrome Cadillac Escalade wheel with a picture beside the description. The great thing about that Hollander number 5309 is that if you found a 5309 on another site selling wheels it would be a wheel that has the exact same description (but possibly not the same quality!).

On the OriginalWheels.com site you may have noticed that we will normally just give the “Wheel Part Number” which will match up to the Hollander Number and then we describe the finish in words so people don’t have to know the “U code” to know what they’re ordering.

With all this, you’re probably like, “Well what good does this do me?” Let me explain: there’s going to be a successor for the NSX and after this happens, the RSX and Original Acura RSX Wheels will come back to life! Under the hood of the car, there’s most likely going to be a modified version of the same 201-horsepower & 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s in the new 2012 Honda Civic.

The Kia Rio Wheels are part of a series of subcompact automobiles that’s made by Kia. They’ve been making these cars & these Kia Wheels since 2001. So far, there have been two generations that have been made. Both of these generations have inline-four gasoline and diesel engines, and front-wheel drive.
