This week’s spotlight focuses on Deltona, Florida. The first inhabitants of southwest Volusia County were Nomadic Timucuans who found fish and fresh water plentiful in the area. After Florida became a state in 1845, steamboats began to make regular trips up the St. Johns River to Lake Monroe.

Community Spotlight: New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach occupies a notable place in history as the site of the largest single attempt at colonial settlement in what is now the United States. Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician and entrepreneur, obtained a grant of land from the British Crown. In 1768 he established a colony of 1225 immigrants on the coastal plantations at New Smyrna, with a view toward the commercial production of such crops as corn, indigo, rice, hemp, and cotton.

The land that the Turnbull colonists settled is located along the west bank of the Indian River, opposite one of coastal east Florida’s relatively few inlets.

For some 10,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans, Native Americans inhabited the area, initially on a nomadic basis and later in more sedentary camps and villages. Until the early twentieth century, the coastline was strewn with mounds of ancient refuse that testified to the presence of the Indians. Most of the mounds were destroyed, the shell used for roads and building construction material. However, much evidence of prehistoric habitation remains hidden under ground and water within the corporate limits of New Smyrna Beach and beyond.

The first European visitation to the New Smyrna Beach area was made during the First Spanish Colonial Period (1565-1763). Located on the fringe of the primary Spanish settlement at St. Augustine, New Smyrna was visited by missionaries sent to convert the indigenous Indian population to the Catholic faith. Toward the end of that period, the Spanish Crown conceded a number of land grants in the area.

Turnbull’s colonial experiment, launched just after the British acquired East Florida in 1764, endured until 1777, when the colonists, plagued by disease and dissention, quit the place and fled to St. Augustine. Their physical legacy remains in the form of stone ruins and subsurface artifacts.

Community Spotlight: Winter Park, Florida

Winter Park an old and distinguished address in Central Florida, located on the North East side of Orlando. Minutes from downtown, it is convenient to all of downtown amenities while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere. Winter Park offers some of the most picturesque areas and some of the best window shopping opportunities in greater Orlando.
Founded in the late 19th century as a winter retreat for northerners, Winter Park is known for its natural beauty and numerous lakes. It has also nurtured an arts and cultural community, much of which is centered around Rollins College. The first higher education institute in Florida, Rollins is a small liberal arts school located on Lake Virginia. Some of its historical buildings can be found in the National Register of Historic Sites.
In addition to historical buildings, Winter Park is also home to the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, one of the top art museums in the country with over 6,000 pieces. The community also boasts having the largest collection of Tiffany glass on the planet, located at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art.
Another institution of note located in Winter Park is the Full Sail Academy. Catering to those who wish to pursue a career in entertainment, music, broadcasting, creative design and internet technology find specialized courses and professional training.
Winter Park consists of over 70 parks, and recreational opportunities abound. There are a number of yearly festivals and activities, as well as golf courses, a train station, country club, boat tours, shopping, and dining. There is enough to keep anyone active.
