Third annual Roar n Soar at Fantasy of Flight

Look to the skies this weekend; Fantasy of Flight is hosting its third annual Roar ‘n Soar two-day extravaganza, featuring some of the world’s finest classic land, sea, and air racing machines. The fast-paced festival takes place on the weekend of Nov. 7 and 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m.

During the event, daring pilots will throttle up and take off for exhilarating aerial maneuvers in airplanes from the "World's Greatest Aircraft Collection." Other demonstrations and competitions include a timed slalom event for drivers; extreme sport cycling demonstrations; classic race boats and gasoline- and nitro/methane-powered radio-control model boats on Lake Agnes; and high-speed radio controlled aircraft and powered paragliders soaring across the sky.

In addition to food served up by Ker’s WingHouse restaurants and Cold Stone Creamery, Homefront Hugs USA will be at the event, enlisting volunteers and creating a workstation where they will prepare the care packages to ship to the troops. The Sixth Annual B-CU/FAMU O.C.A.C. Golf Classic, a major fundraiser designed to help the Orange County Alumni Chapters Scholarship Funds of both Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University, will again be held this year at the highly-acclaimed Shingle Creek Golf Club on Fri., Nov. 20, beginning at 8 a.m.

The sixth annual event is presented by the Harris Rosen Foundation and the two college alumni chapters and is one of the most sought after and popular African-American golf classics in the Orlando area. Fifty FAMU and fifty-two B-CU students have received scholarships funded by the tournament since its inception.

The Tournament begins with a continental breakfast and warm-up on the driving range from 7 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. The Classic then tees off at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Following completion of the round, there will be an awards luncheon from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

“This will be a sensational day of golf and a magnificent day of fund-raising,” says Dave Scott, Director of Golf at Shingle Creek Golf Club. “We are again honored to host and to be a title sponsor of this prestigious event and recognize the benefits it provides to those colleges and charities that are associated with it.”

Typhoon Lagoon closed for refurbishment in November and December

Starting November 1, 2009 Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon water park will be closed for annual refurbishments until January 10, 2010. Blizzard Beach will remain open during this time and close down temporarily for winter refurbishments when Typhoon Lagoon reopens.

During the cooler winter months, Walt Disney World always keeps one of the waterparks open while shutting down the other for approximately two months for annual maintenance. Typhoon Lagoon is located close to Downtown Disney and Blizzard Beach is in the Animal Kingdom area of the resort.

Orlando has been experiencing an unseasonably hot autumn this year, so a trip to an outdoor waterpark in November might actually be a refreshing change of pace for Orlando visitors, especially those from “Up North” who have already pulled out their heavy sweaters and winter jackets for the season.

The Nutcracker in Orlando

On Christmas Eve, young Clara's family hosts a grand party where she is presented with a Nutcracker by her mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer. That night, she dreams that her Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince who takes her to his kingdom, the Land of Sweets. There, she is entertained with lively and exotic dances from other lands. Flowers come to life and the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform a breathtaking pas de dux in Clara's honor. As the dream and the magical land fade into the night, Clara wakes in her own room again to realize that her treasured Nutcracker was what brought her dream to life.

Orlando Ballet will perform The Nutcracker at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre December 11-13 and 17-20, 2009. Curtain is at 7:30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:30pm on Sunday matinees.

Design your own coaster at Epcot’s Sum of all Thrills

Earlier this month Raytheon Company’s Sum of all Thrills exhibit opened at Epcot’s INNOVENTIONS pavilion. The new exhibit showcases math in action as students design and experience their own ride using math fundamentals. The attraction lets guests design a ride—there is a height requirement of at least 48 inches and riders must be at least 54 inches tall if there is an inversion—and then experience their coaster, jet or bobsled on one of four Kuka robot arms, complete with onboard visuals. The German-designed robot arms are similar to those used on automobile assembly lines.

The attraction begins in the preshow Briefing Room, where riders learn how math, science and engineering are important when designing a ride. There are some similarities to CyberSpace Mountain at Disney Quest, but Raytheon has put an increased emphasis on the importance of using math and science skills, to help ensure that there will be a new generation of talented engineers.
