"That depends," replied the foreman. "Let's see you chop down this tree." The young man steeped forward and skillfully knocked down the great tree. Impressed, the foreman exclaimed, "You can start Monday, we pay on Fridays."

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday rolled by. Thursday afternoon the foreman approached the young man and said, "You can pick up your paycheck on the way out today."

Startled, the young man replied, "I thought you paid on Fridays?"

"Normally we do," said the foreman. "But we're letting you go today because you've fallen behind. Our daily charts show that you've dropped from first place on Monday to last place today."

"But I'm a hard worker," the young man objected. "I arrive first, leave last and even have worked through my coffee breaks!"

The foreman, sensing the young man's integrity, thought for a minute and then asked, "Son, have you been sharpening your axe?"

The young man replied, "No sir, I've been working too hard to take the time for that!"

Abraham Lincoln once said: "If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first four hours sharpening the axe".

Just to state the obvious, the axe is a tool to perform what you have to do. I can probably define the axe as `something which helps me do what I have to do faster'.

I spend a large amount of time sharpening my axe. How do I sharpen my axe? I listen to at least 10 hours of motivational messages a day; while I’m working, driving or sleeping and I read at least 15 minutes a day something positive to lift my spirits. I also have cut cable in my house.

Now I'm not a Nazi or a prude, I've just learned that what I allow into my eyes, ears, and heart can either sharpen or dull me. I don't share this with you to boast but to admit that I struggle. I struggle as a husband, as a father and as a business man. Because I know I struggle, I must sharpen my axe.

If you find yourself dragging your feet at the end of the week, ask yourself, "Did I sharpen my Axe?"

On April 23, 2011 I celebrated two milestones.
All over the news everyone is talking about Tim Tebow. Many criticize him and want to see him fail. Why?

I believe many want to see him fail because they can't see themselves ever living up to his standards.

It's funny we celebrate the athletes who abuse drugs, disrespect women and curse. We celebrate them as long as they are winning. We put them on pedestals and wonder why our kids are going in the wrong direction.

We as parents really need to decide what is most important, winning games or finding Jesus.

Of those, over 98% will sell less than 500 copies. If you’re just starting out, shooting for 500 is a good start. After that, I would say you’re moderately successful and ready to strive for the thousands.” (Terry Cordingley)

Last year my book God Made Me Pick Up Underwear, Finding Faith in Unusual Places was published and it has already sold over 500 copies. My book isn't a best seller yet but at least I can say that I AM part of the 2% that succeed.

My wrestling coach, Jose Campo, always says “What the mind perceives, one can achieve.” I strongly believe that this book will continue to sell. My belief comes from knowing that this book is God inspired. I can honestly say that that 2.5 years ago I had trouble putting a paragraph together. “Where I am weak, He is strong.”

I AM is such a powerful phrase. When Moses asked God what shall I say is your name. God replied, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you.” (Exodus 3:14) When Jesus described Himself in Revelations He said, I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last.” (Revelations 1:11)

If to be a Christian means to be Christ like. Then we must be Extraordinary like Christ. So I claim that I AM a child of the Utmost High! I AM forgiven by the blood of Jesus! I AM a national best selling author! What must one do to thrive in this economy? In the economic turmoil that many Americans are facing today small business owners need to do something to be recognized. They need to do something to stand out.

I've found that humor and making fun of myself has helped me stand out and be recognized among my peers. Every week I share my bookkeeping commercials with over 100 businesses at networking events. Here I share a culmination of all my commercials in one.
Toastmasters Speech 6 - Vocal Variety

Did you know that the number one fear or phobia is not death? The greatest fear that many face is actually public speaking. Fear of public speaking has negative effects on ones life. It hinders ones career and prevents one from recognizing their true potential.

The only way to overcome this fear is to do something. Recognize that you have the problem and decide to take action. One proven method to overcoming the fear of public speaking is by joining Toastmasters.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in helping one become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience.

Most Toastmasters meetings are comprised of approximately 20 people who meet weekly for an hour or two. Participants practice and learn skills to be better communicators.

There is no instructor, instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved.

Good communicators tend to be good leaders and good leaders tend to demand higher incomes and have more opportunities. In today's job market, it pays to speak well.

If you want to take your career, business or life beyond ordinary, then do something! Take action today and visit a local Toastmasters meeting.

Day in and day out I am given the greatest opportunity to step into the lives of my friends and family to hear of their struggles and their victories of life. One constant in most people's lives is a longing to see change but most are using the wrong tools.

The other day I tried to file down a sharp edge off my daughters ceramic bowl with a nail file. As you can tell where this story is going, it didn't work. Why? It didn't work because I was using the wrong tool for the job.

So what is the correct tool for change?

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Early in my prayer life I prayed that my wife would change. After many so called unanswered prayers God showed me that my prayer shouldn't be to change my wife but my prayer should be, "Change me!"

Once I realized that I only have the power to change myself I began taking action. I prayed the prayer, "Change me!" and God revealed to me areas of my life that needed adjustment.

Many times I didn't like what He had to say but it is the truth that sets us free. Is it easy? No! But God didn't give us a life of ease, He allows trials and tribulations in our lives so we can be better (James 1:12) so we can be Extraordinary.

God is Extraordinary and He has created us in His image. If we accept good then we are not in His image. We need to strive for a life of Extraordinary and it begins with, "Change me!"

To an Extraordinary Life!

"God Made Me Pick Up Underwear" is the inspirational story of Orlando U. Javien, Jr. I have read many books written by men concerning their faith. When I read this one I knew it was written from the heart. It takes a courageous man to admit his faults. Mr. Javien is a courageous man. It is easy to admit your faults and failings to your friends, but much harder to share them with the public. He relates to us his struggles with addictions. Everyone will be able to relate to at least one of the chapters in this book. The writing style is simple and conversational. I felt as if Javien and I were sharing a cup of coffee, as he shared his story with me.

This book will benefit everyone. It would be ideal for a small group Bible study or simply for a couple to read together to strengthen their marriage and home life.

The book shares the struggles in his marriage and how a game of golf taught him how to be a better husband.

The author even illustrates that picking up underwear can be a test of faithfulness, and how his death on the television show CSI led him to live a fuller life.

"This book is meant for those who have made the confession of faith, and need a map to continue their journey with Christ," Orlando writes. "This book is also meant for the Christian who is struggling with their faith – one foot in the world, and the other foot with Jesus. Most of all, this book is meant for the Christian that wants to take their walk to the next level, beyond the ordinary."

In "God Made Me Pick Up Underwear," readers ultimately will see that faith can be found if they truly look and listen – even in unusual places.

On June 27, 2010 I attended River of Life Church in San Jose and had the great honor to share my testimony and sell my book. The church gave me a warm welcome and even posted my message on iTunes. That is so cool! I've always wanted to be podcasted. It was such an amazing event and I can't wait to go there again.

At the end of the day I sold 28 books and I am now 140 books away from the magic number 500. I thank the Lord for using me as His instrument and for shining His bright light upon me and the church that I call my brothers and sisters in Christ.

The book signing at Borders was a huge success. Over 70 people showed up and 35 books were sold. Out of the 35 books purchased 3 were from strangers that were just in the store. The numbers are Extraordinary especially since the average book signing event only sells 6 books.

I want to send my utmost thanks to Borders of El Cajon for all their help and to all my friends and family that attended. I am truly blessed to have you all in my life. To all those that couldn't attend, it's okay there will be more and I know you will be there when you can.

These can be great sales and promotional opportunities for authors, if handled properly. One of the areas where some authors get in trouble is record keeping.

At least once a month, I receive a phone call from an author that goes something like this:

"I left 10 copies of my book at the XYZ Bookstore (fictitious name) and I haven't been paid for the books they sold. When I asked for my books back, they said they didn't have them. What do I do?"

"Do you have a receipt or something in writing stating how many books you left at the store?" I ask.

"Ummm......"

Of course, I'm sure you see the problem here. If you were selling IPods for a living would you just hand ten of them over to a store without getting something in writing? Of course not. It's not that bookstores are shady when it comes to this sort of thing, but things happen. Bookstores experience customer theft, just like any other retailer. They could have mistakenly sent them to their distributor as returns, thinking they had ordered the books. Without paperwork, how would they know?

This is why it is good for authors and bookstores to sign a consignment agreement if the author is leaving books at the store for the store to sell. It protects the author, because they have a record of leaving books at the store and how much they expect to get paid per book. It also gives the store a record of just where they got those books that are sitting on their shelves.

Here is a basic sample consignment form that you can alter and print to suit your needs, but it's pretty straightforward:

Book Title __________________________
Subject: ____________________________
Title Code: __________________________
ISBN: ______________________________
Consignment Agreement
Date: __________________
This is to confirm (store name) has received (number) copies of (book title)
From (Author or vendor’s name)
For sale at $ (retail value)
(Store) will pay (dollar or percent of price) per copy sold, to be reconciled at (date).
Books will be in stock until (date) at which time it is the author's
responsibility to reclaim any unsold stock.

SIGNED: _______________________________ for (store)

SIGNED: _______________________________ for vendor

Author Contact:
Name
Address
Email
Phone

Store Contact:
Name
Address
Email
Phone

The author and the bookstore should each keep a copy of the consignment agreement.

Remember, your book is your business, and one of the basics of running any successful business is keeping good records.
Authors Need to Think and Act Like Entrepreneurs

By Matthew Toone

If you are an author, or even an aspiring author, you probably realize that less than 1% of published authors ever make more than $50,000. The vast majority of authors are unsuccessful because they fail to realize that their book is a product and that authorship is a business. Authors often fail because they believe that writing the book is their responsibility, and promoting the book is the publishers. The first step towards guaranteed failure for most authors is to simply write the book, hand the manuscript over to the publisher, and expect the publisher to make them millions.

To put it simply, authors fail because they do not think or act like entrepreneurs! There is a 'secret' that most successful entrepreneurs know and apply that is the reason for their success. This same 'secret' or formula, ironically, is the same formula needing to be applied to be successful in anything in life. Unfortunately, most authors know of and practice only the first few steps, and then they unfortunately stop (or quit) by not putting into practice the last few steps of these secrets for success. To summarize this formula and apply it to authors (although it applies to anyone and any goal), we need to break it down into 5 simple categories:

1) Desire Success

2) Believe in Themselves and their Book

3) Take Action

4) Learn from Failure

5) Persist and Never Quit

The formula seems simple, right? The reality is that there is much more that goes into it, and it is certainly more difficult than these 5 simple steps make it seem. However, most unsuccessful authors stop after step 3. Every author of course desires their book to be successful, they undoubtedly believe in their book, and they put forth the necessary effort to write the book. However, writing the book is half the battle - promoting the book to make money is much more difficult. Thus, most authors fail because they expect or depend upon others to make their book successful, when those 'others' do not have the same desire, belief in the book, and time to put in the effort required to make the book a success.

Keep in mind that best-selling books are best SELLING. That does not mean they are necessarily the best written, most informative or helpful, or even the most entertaining books. Thus, if an author's book is not making money, rather than assuming the plot, size of the market, or front cover illustration or title is the problem - perhaps the actual problem is within - reflected in a lack of the author's desire, belief, and work ethic to make the book successful. Every successful entrepreneur (and author) understands that their potential and success is determined by them alone - not the publisher, not the customers, not the economy, not even the business/book idea. They also understand that work will be required every day, overcoming fear and doubt is a constant battle, getting up after failure is essential, re-adjusting the marketing plan is necessary, not giving excuses or expecting others to make them successful is understood, and persisting until their goal is accomplished is what they are committed to doing.

So, where is the manuscript for your book? Is it collecting dust on the shelf, is it already published and in print, is it just thoughts in your mind, or perhaps you haven't even discovered yet that it is in your mind? Regardless of where it is, the reality is that it can be a success if you personally learn and implement the laws of success to achieve greatness in anything. But never forget that the success of any book is not solely found in the plot, market size, topic covered, or catchy title - it is mainly found and realized because of the desire, belief, and work ethic of the author.
