Orlando is famous for its theme parks. Millions of visitors each year travel to central Florida to get away with family and friends. The theme parks aren’t the only thing to do in Orlando. Regional shopping center malls and outlet malls are just as enticing to the visiting crowd. Orlando’s malls are filled with as many tourists as main street USA at the magic kingdom. So when you’re visiting Orlando consider visiting the Mall at Millenia.

The Mall at Millenia

This massive mall is centrally located and is close to major theme parks and hotels. The list of amenities goes on and on for this mall. Valet parking, discounted hotel reservations, gift wrap, and a U.S. post office just to name a few.

The Mall at Millenia has wonderful places to eat. If you are looking for quick and easy food for the family the food court has it all. It’s located in the middle of the malls two wings on the second floor. Plenty of seating can be found although it does fill up during peak season at lunch time. Family friendly, clean bathrooms are also close by. It’s a great place to relax or rendezvous with your party. There are also plenty of upscale restaurants to choose from include the every popular cheesecake factory.

The mall is broken down into two levels of shopping. Let’s say the normal side and the up scale side. If you are facing the food court the right side of the mall has stores like Bath and Body Works, Gap, and Discovery Channel. To the left of the food court you will find stores such as Coach, Jimmy Choo, Tiffany & Co.

The Mall at Millenia has something for everyone. You will be able to stay entertained for hours by yourself or with your family and friends. Orlando has something for everyone, including shoppers.

You should look for communities which are centrally located with easy access to all that Orlando has to offer and which welcome homeowners renting out their properties on the short term to holidaymakers.

Better quality furnishings last longer

Having chosen and bought your perfect property abroad, you must then (if it is a brand newly built house) turn your thoughts to furnishing it throughout. You would be well advised to stay neutral and select colors and styles, which will not go out of date too quickly and easily. Also it is not the best idea to pick any hues that are too outlandish or purely to suit your own personal taste. You wish your Orlando vacation villa to appeal to the broadest spectrum possible to ensure interest and repeat bookings for your vacation home, thus turning it into a profitable business venture.

With regards to furniture for the home, the cheapest may not always be the best in the long run. If the furniture is so cheap that it does not last and needs to be replaced regularly then this could prove to be a false economy. Finally, you want to do all you can to promote your Orlando vacation villa. You can do this through word of mouth, good photographs of your home, a website, advertising and subscribing to websites which display vacation rental properties to those wishing to rent a home in the sun.

If you put in the effort we are sure you will reap the rewards and see your vacation villa fill up with bookings - just remember to keep a couple of weeks for yourselves to enjoy all Orlando has to offer. After all your hard work, you’ll deserve the break!

The Animal Kingdom Lodge

The lobby is reflective of a national park-like setting complete with a huge stone fireplace that stands 82 feet tall. I’m sure you have seen adds all over the web for Free Tickets to Disney World or Disney World Tickets at Half Price. I can tell you right now that NOTHING is for Free. Anyone offering you Free Disney Tickets wants something in return.

Timeshare Companies use this tactic to get you in and tour their Timeshare Property. This is usually started with a timeshare presentation that could take a few hours and can be very time consuming, plus at the end you have to deal with the sales person trying to force this onto you so he can make his
commission. These Scams does not only happen in Orlando. They occur throughout the Travel Industry. Remember, is a deal sounds "Too Good to be True " then watch out!

If you are in the market for Timeshare, then there are reputable companies in Orlando such as Disney Vacation Club, Marriott Vacation Club and Orange Lake Resorts just to name a few.

If you end up in a timeshare presentation and they do not want you to take some time and think it over, then just walk away from the deal. Sometimes these deals seems to be very good and you feel good because you are on vacation and having fun.

Don’t respond to emails and phone calls that tells you that you have won a free Disney Vacation. Remember, there is no such thing as a Free Vacation. This is one of the other Scams that timeshare companies use to get you onto their property for a presentation. Either via email or making a cold call to tell you that you have won a Disney World Vacation. They will put you up for a night in one of the cheap hotels and then get you to come and sit through the timeshare presentation the next day.

Always make sure you look at all the fine print when you have a reservation. Some of the cheap deals have restrictions which can make it impossible to travel certain times of the year. Also remember that anyone can put up a nice looking website. We ONLY deal with the Reputable companies like

Gatorland is another one of Orlando’s attractions that top visitors to do lists. This 110-acre family owned Alligator Themed Park has been open for business since 1949 and there’s enough to see and do here to take up a good half day (more if you want).

Activities at Gatorland:

According to the Gatorland website, Gatorland started out as the dream of a man named Owen Godwin, Sr.

He built an alligator pit in the backyard of his home in the 1930’s and put a female alligator in it with her babies. He and the Mrs. would host visitors and sell homemade gator souvenirs while letting them see the gators.

Godwin apparently really enjoyed doing this. He planned for a bigger attraction that would show off more of Florida’s wildlife. In 1947, after the war, he bought 16 acres of property near Kissimmee. Since this was the dawn of 20th century American highway tourism, more and more families were visiting Florida.

With the help of a few investors his idea caught on. Now, thousands visit this park each year. As a matter of fact, Gatorland claims to be “central Florida’s first major attraction”. It now features all kinds of reptiles and Florida wildlife.

The 4 main shows at Gatorland include:

• The “Gator Jumparoo Show” - featuring the alligators’ ability to jump out of the water in search of food.
• The “Gator wrestlin’ Show” - with a 6-8 foot gator being subdued, put to sleep, then re-awakened.
• “Jungle Crocs” - detailing 4 types of crocodiles and their environment.
• The “Upclose Animal Encounters Show” – filled with differing animals from around the world - - including some dangerous snakes.

Gatorland is open everyday, rain or shine, from 9am to 5pm. It’s on Hwy 441 near Kissimmee. Tickets range from $19.95 for adults (ages 13 and over) and kids (ages 3-12) are currently $9.95.

The best rates and fares are available online. It will take some time to do the research but the cheapest way to save costs is to book each component separately ie. Car Rentals , Accommodations, Flights and even Theme Park Tickets etc.

Plan well in advance. Making a last minute reservations can cost you a lot of money and it is also stressful to get all that planed in a short period of time.

Stay Away from websites that advertise 2 tickets for the price of one or very discounted tickets. These are all timeshare companies and they pull you in with discount tickets to come and listen to a timeshare presentation for you to buy timeshare. There are different tickets. Use out guide to find out Which Theme Park Ticket is right for you.

Some airlines have good deals when you get a credit card from them. They either offer a few thousand air miles or some of them even offer 3-5% cash back. This percentage might sound low but it all adds up between the flights and accommodation and food and theme park tickets. Some Airlines also offer Gift Certificates.

Sign up for newsletters from some of your favorite airlines and hotel groups. They constantly send out new deals. The arks are also less crowded during low season and short lines.

Spend less on Food

Food and drinks are expensive in the parks. If you are staying in a Villa, you can always pack some food for the day. Buy water and soft drinks before the time and take them in with the food. On hot days you can freeze the drinks and take them frozen with you in a cooler. You can also go back to the villa for lunch and come back refreshed to the park if you do not want to carry a lot of food and drinks with you.

If you want to eat inside the park, look out for restaurants that allow kids to eat free. Look out for coupons to use at the big chain restaurants like Mc Donald’s. Money saving coupon books are available in the local supermarkets. They also contain coupons to some of the other parks and dinner shows.

Spend time Planning an Itinerary

Spend some time planning an itinerary before you buy tickets to the parks. To pick the right tickets all depends on how you want to spend your days. Check all your options. Things like Florida Resident and Civil/Military Service and Corporate discounts can be an additional saving.

There is a travel agent in the Walmart at 4444 W. Vine in Kissimmee. They offer Discounted tickets with about 5% off the normal price but they might not carry every type of ticket.

Epcot Center in Florida , Disney’s second park, is certainly one of the best and the most popular theme parks in the world. Millions of visitors from all over the globe come and visit Epcot Center in Florida every year and with Epcot’s blend of education and entertainment make it an enjoyable experience for guests of all ages.

The park is nearly 300 acres big and opened in 1982. Epcot Center in Florida consists of two sections, Future World and World Showcase. Future World opens at 9am and closes around 7pm.World Showcase opens at 11am and stays open until 9pm. Make sure you are there at 9pm when Illuminations of light show starts. This is truly the “grand-finale” before the park close.

There is so much to see at Epcot that I suggest if you can to spend 2 days in Epcot. You can walk the park at a more leisurely pace and see everything. Epcot Center in Florida is twice the size of Magic Kingdom so make sure you bring comfortable shoes with for all the walking. Plan to spend your day in Future World and then move on to World Showcase.

Future World’s most populare attractions are, Mission Space, Soarin and Test Track. Soarin is the newest ride and is always packed, so make sure you get a Fast Pass for Soarin and then go to the other attractions and come back later with your fast pass. Spaceship Earth is the first thing you will see when you enter the park. It is the Big Golf Ball that can be seen from miles away. Spaceship Earth takes you through the history of communication from the past into the future.

World Showcase consists of different countries where you can experience the food and shopping for each country. World Showcase feature countries as Japan, England, Canada, Mexico, Norway and China. Some countries feature movies or rides, while others are mostly shops and recreations of popular tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower. During the day performers are performing outside of China and Paris.

I love Germany. It is like stepping into an authentic German Village with bear and bratwurst. Diners will be treated to dances and yodelers straight from Germany. Entertainment in the Germany section includes a strolling band and a trio of singers.

Illuminations of Light are always a highlight for me to end the day at a great place like Epcot Center in Florida.

Places to Stay in Florida in Your RV

Florida is a hot destination on the RV circuit give the amazing year around climate. RV facilities can be hit and miss, so here are some you can count on.

Aside from California and New York, there really isn’t a more visited state than Florida. Miles of beaches on this southernmost state, along with attractions such as amusement parks, aquariums and more offer families a wide range of activities. There is so much to see and do in Florida that you could spend an entire season exploring the many sites throughout the state – which is why traveling to Florida in a recreational vehicle, or RV, is such a great idea. You can take your time and stop at the many RV facilities to spend the night along the way.

The most visited area in Florida is arguably Orlando and the surrounding areas such as Kissimmee. This is because Orlando is where the Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts are located, and when people think of a place to go in Florida, they usually think of Disney. There are many other regions to explore in the state, but if you have small children, you will probably be drawn here to the center of Florida (away from the beaches and the beauty of the Everglades and other natural areas). Of course, this area also has a high concentration of RV parks, to fill the needs of families.

If you’d like to stay within the Disney resort, there is one place you should check into. It’s known as the Fort Wilderness Resort, and it is located on the Disney resort property. If you choose to stay here, you can expect to find all of the amenities and beauty that Disney has to offer. The sites here are located within 740 acres of woodland forest, and by parking your RV in one of the Disney hookups, you also gain the ability to take part in the many activities and other amenities that are found at Disney resort hotels such as character breakfasts, early admission to the theme parks, and shuttle buses.

Staying within the Orlando area, but not at the Disney resort is also an option. The Tropical Palms Fun Resort, located just bordering on the Walt Disney World Resort, offers families a less expensive option than staying within the resort, but offers many of the amenities as well as the closeness of the Disney resort. The hookups here range from something they call the “Super Site” with electric, water, sewer, cable, paved area and patio, and picnic table – down to the simple water and electric sites. The other amenities in the facilities include pools, cafes, wireless Internet service, a business center and a general store.

Picking Florida for your next family vacation is definitely going to make your entire family happy. From adults to kids, everyone loves the thrill of a warm Florida vacation, with or without a stop at the Disney theme parks.

All Walt Disney World Resorts® are fabulous places to visit, but they are also amazing places to dine. Whether it be a quick snack or a full gourmet dinner, you will not be disappointed by the choice and quality of fare that Disney has to offer.

Each theme park, water park and resort area has a vast selection of eateries for you to sample and enjoy, and as you would expect, depending upon your budget, you can eat for just a few bucks, or really push the boat out and savour the delights of five star cuisine.

Many of Disney’s restaurants are "themed", and these are incredibly popular with the kids. Likewise, character dining experiences (aimed at younger members of your party, but enjoyed by all) are often the highlight of a child’s day. Well what could be better when eating your meal than to be served by Mickey, Donald, Pluto, or maybe even a real life Disney princess ? Of course character dining also allows you to capture some magical photographic memories too.

All to often, people get the impression that theme park food is going to be unhealthy food. Admittedly, there is fast food available in the form of burgers, hot dogs and fries, but you will also be pleasantly surprised to discover that the alternatives are indeed exceedingly healthy, and downright tasty too.

Our vegetarian friends are also well catered for, along with guests who have special dietary requirements, or those who cannot eat certain foods because of religious beliefs. Full details of the contents of all meals served on Disney property can be found by simply asking the cast member who takes your order.

And whilst a lot of food served throughout Disney parks is essentially "American" cuisine, a visit to Epcot World Showcase for example, will give you the opportunity to experience a vast selection of foods from around the world, ranging from Chinese, to French and even little known Norwegian delicacies, to name but a few.

Each Disney park that you visit has it’s own map so that you can find your way around. Clearly marked on these maps, and divided into categories are the dining experiences offered to tempt your taste buds.

So whether it be a full service restaurant, character dining, a quick takeaway or a healthy fresh green salad, you will find it all at Disney. The service is, as with all things Disney, friendly and polite, and it’s great to know that when those hunger pangs strike, that you will be well catered for, in every sense of the word.

Food at Walt Disney World can be outrageously expensive and, in some cases, of poor quality. It can make a very large dent in your vacation budget if you don’t plan ahead.

Picnics are not really the solution. You are not allowed to bring your own food into the theme parks.(the exception being the two
water parks where you can and should take a picnic with you) People do seem tae food into the parks, and I have never seen anyone challenged. I guess the watchword here is “be discrete”If you arrive at the gates with a large cooler and picnic hamper you are inviting the Disney people to take action.

1. Get a good breakfast “Off -World”
Fantastic breakfast deals locations serving really good breakfasts. Some smaller restaurants and big chains like Sizzlers serve a breakfast buffet where you can really stuff yourself for a few dollars. My personal favorite is Cracker Barrel who dish up traditional Southern cooking. A good breakfast will set you up for a hard day at the parks and prevent mid morning hunger pangs. (However it might not be a good idea to ride “Tower of Terror” or “Mission Space” with a full stomach!)

2. Avoid Killer Snacks
Snacks at Disney World can make a big hole in your wallet. You could buy a full meal “off world” for the price of a Disney coffee and cake. Try to carry a drink. The parks sell a nifty shoulder strap to hold a small bottle. After your first expensive purchase you can replace the bottle with cheaper sodas from a supermarket.In really hot weather you will appreciate a drink at regular intervals. Water is probably best. Try to find some kind of waist strap to hold a bottle which you can replenish at the wat er fountains as you come across them. (Totes do a good one)

3. Avoid fast food.
The best way to avoid expensive, inferior fast food is to arrange in advance where and when you will eat Trouble comes when you are too tired or thirsty to care, - the result will be a very inferior hot dog or slice of pizza at top dollar prices. A proper sit down restaurant, carefully chosen, will represent much better value for money and you will have a nice rest in the process.

4. Eat Your Main Meal at Lunchtime.
Many restaurants have similar dinner and lunch menus but the lunch time one will be quite a lot cheaper. My family enjoyed a new meal called Linner. As brunch is to breakfast and lunch, linner is to Lunch and Dinner. Basically we ate from the lunch menu as late as possible. We missed the lunch time crowds but ate before the more expensive dinner menu kicked in (usually around 3pm) If you have a really good breakfast it will be easy enough to hold out until 3.00pm We would often buy something to munch as we sat and waited for Parades, Fantasmic etc.

5. Use the Monorail
Use the monorail to go to a resort hotel at lunch or dinner time. They are often much less crowded and cheaper than the theme park restaurants. Get a hand stamp and you can return to the theme park later.

6 Treat Yourself to a full Service restaurants at EPCOT
Many people consider the restaurants in The World Showcase to be an important part of the EPCOT experience and you will definitely want to try one of them. The trick here is to choose carefully because they can be expensive, make sure it is the right choice for your family. (Not much point in shelling out for Japanese if junior will only ear burgers)

With so many choices, it’s difficult to decide where to spend your dining dollars at Walt Disney World. Hopefully this list will narrow the field a bit for you.

Best For Families

Coral Reef Restaurant – Kid’s feel like the Little Mermaid at this one-of-a-kind dining room where just a trident’s throw away is Epcot’s Living Seas’ 6-million-gallon aquarium rife with coral reefs and sea life. And adults feel like Poseidon after just one bite of the restaurant’s stellar seafood and the oh-so-delicious pepper jack cheese grits.

50’s Prime Time Café – What kid doesn’t want to experience life way back when. They’ll get a fun dose of it at this Disney-MGM Studios’ restaurant. Dine on savory renditions of good old American comfort food watching Leave it to Beaver and Topper on black and white TVs sitting on the counter between the toaster and the blender. “Mom” herself is your server, making sure everyone in the “family” observes good manners.

Whispering Canyon Café – Honest-to-goodness, rib-stickin’ barbecued vittles served piping hot in an iron skillet is right up a wannabe cowboy’s alley at this fun-loving restaurant at the Wilderness Lodge. Come prepared for plenty of hootin’ and hollerin’ and please, whatever you do, don’t ask for the ketchup unless, that is, you like a lot of attention.

Best to Book Ahead For

California Grill - This sensational restaurant at the Contemporary Resort should be at the top of every visitors list. From exemplary sushi to the exceptional New American cuisine to sensational desserts and the outstanding California wine list each available by the glass, this place has it all. From its lofty heights diners can see the Magic Kingdom, the sparkling Seven Seas Lagoon, and, best of all, a picture-perfect view of the Wishes fireworks. Just try to time your meal around the fireworks and head outside to the super observation platform for a bird’s-eye view of the extravaganza.

Cinderella’s Royal Table – If there was ever a place to plan ahead for, this is it. Exactly 180 days prior to the anticipated day, countless parents rise at the crack of dawn to be one of the first to call for dining reservations. All just to insure that their darling little ones will be among the lucky few to be seated high atop Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom. If you don’t snag a reservation your children will never forgive you.

Victoria and Albert’s – Demand is high for this fantastic dining spot at the Grand Floridian Resort. Once you’ve secured your spot, just sit back and prepare to be wowed by tables set in Wedgewood china, Christofle silver, Frette linens, and Riedel crystal, and cuisine that will knock your socks off.

Best For Vegetarians

Victoria and Albert’s– Here is one place that vegetarians won’t feel short changed. A seven-course vegetarian menu, expertly overseen by the illustrious Chef de Cuisine Scott Hunnell, is offered nightly. It can’t get much better than that.

Boma - The essence of Africa is potent beneath Boma’s circular, thatched roof where hearty foods prepared with an African flair (and a dash of American cuisine for the picky eater) are the fare. An entire section (or pod) of meatless dishes with such items like vegetable lentil kofta, braised greens, vegetable skewers, and several kinds of exotic salads are par for the course.

Best Character Dining

Crystal Palace - Winnie the Pooh, and his friends, Eeyore, Piglet, and Tigger are your hosts in a sunlight-drenched, conservatory-style restaurant found at the castle end of Main Street in the Magic Kingdom. Here you’ll find a surprisingly good and bountiful buffet, definitely one of the better spreads in the park.

1900 Park Fare – At this popular spot at the Grand Floridian Resort is Mary Poppins, Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Alice in Wonderland, and the Mad Hatter for breakfast; in the evening hours the characters from Cinderella are in attendance. And the food is perhaps Disney’s best buffet.

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall - Those who love the idea of ethnic dining should try this atypical one housed at Epcot in a replica of Oslo’s Akershus Castle. Disney Princesses are in attendance at all meals and may include Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Mary Poppins.

Best Wine List

Citricos – This Mediterranean influenced restaurant at the Grand Floridian Resort is rightly proud of its global wine list, a Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winner. On the menu you’ll find a suggested wine to accompany each course.

Jiko – At the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s signature dining room you can order from the most extensive list of South African wines this side of Johannesburg. Also a Wine Spectator Restaurant Award winner, more than 65 of South Africa’s boutique wineries showcase their vintages here.

California Grill – As if the spectacular food and the mind-boggling view isn’t enough, the outstanding California wine list is also exceptional with 100 wines offered by the glass.

Victoria and Albert’s – Yet again this, Disney’s most acclaimed restaurant, makes the cut, and has the distinction of being Disney’s only restaurant to receive the coveted Wine Spectator “Best of Award of Excellence”, with 700 selections on the menu and 4,200 bottles in its cellar.

Best Hip Scene

Todd English’s Bluezoo - There’s plenty of buzz surrounding this dreamy outpost at the Walt Disney World Dolphin where it’s worth the cost of dinner just to check out the stunning, underwater-like fantasyland dining room adorned with air bubble light fixtures, shimmery silver-blue organza curtains, and carpeting mimicking an expanding drop of water. But if dinner isn’t in your plans, the lounge here is just as cool where martinis and a raw bar are on order.

Raglan Road - It’s easy to imagine you’re in the heart of Dublin at Raglan Road, Downtown Disney’s newest restaurant and pub. Come in for a drink, a snack, or for a meal… whatever, just don’t miss this fantastic spot. Irish musicians provide authentic entertainment accompanied by delicious, contemporary Irish cuisine.

Book a Spa Treatment - What better way to soothe fragile nerves and sore feet than a session at one of Orlando’s resort spas. On Disney property there’s the Grand Floridian as well as the Saratoga Springs Spa where one of their luxurious treatments are a perfect addition to your vacation. Off property you can’t do any better than the ultra luxurious Ritz-Carlton Spa or the Gaylord Palms Canyon Ranch Spa. Those staying at a Universal Resort should consider an exotic Javanese treatment at the Mandara Spa at Portofino Bay Hotel.

Relax At Your Resort’s Pool - Orlando’s resort pools are justifiably renowned for their spectacular theming. Disney offers some of the best, particularly Stormalong Bay at the Yacht and Beach Club, a 3-acre mini waterpark, or the boulder lined beauty at the Wilderness Lodge featuring waterfalls and its very own geyser. Off property, the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress’ fantasyland pool is cooled by twelve waterfalls and at the JW Marriott’s “Lazy River” you can float to your heart’s content. And at Universal Orlando’s Hard Rock Hotel is the coolest (and I don’t just mean the water temperature) pool around with an underwater sound system, sand beach, and poolside cabanas.

Spend Time On Disney’s Waterways - Disney has miles of lakes and lagoons to explore. You’ll find that most Disney resorts have a marina where many types of watercraft are available for hire. Sailboats, pontoon and canopy boats, Sea Raycers, even a 48-foot yacht. Take your pick. Perhaps the biggest bang for your buck is to be had at the Contemporary Resort where in addition to the above you’ll also find parasailing, waterskiing, tubing, and wakeboarding on beautiful Bay Lake.

Cool Off at a Disney Waterpark - Disney has two wonderful waterparks: Blizzard Beach, a perfect place for daredevils, and Typhoon Lagoon where you’ll find a whopper of a surf pool along with tamer attractions. Spend your day hopping from one crazy waterslide to another or just kick back and relax on a lounge chair for the afternoon.

Shop Till You Drop in The Mall at Millenia - For one of Orlando’s best shopping experiences head to this fabulous new mall just minutes from Universal Orlando. Here you’ll find only the best with stores such as Neiman Marcus, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany. But fair warning: this trip could end up costing a pretty penny. Those with great taste but thriftier intentions will love the Orlando Premium Outlets Mall located just across I-4 from Downtown Disney where designer outlet stores such as Hugo Boss, Armani, Escada, Ermenegildo Zegna, and Burberry won’t break the bank.

Head to Downtown Disney - For a change of pace there’s Downtown Disney. Here you’ll find over 70 shops, restaurants, and nightclubs plus a 24-screen theater, Disney Quest with five floors of virtual games and adventures, even a Cirque du Soleil. Adults will want to pick a great restaurant for dinner like Wolfgang Puck or Portofino Yacht Club and then head to Pleasure Island to party down until the wee hours of the morning.

Swim With a Dolphin - Perhaps the most unusual experience in Orlando is Discovery Cove. Spend up close and personal time with your very own dolphin friend, snorkel with tropical fish and rays, even feed birds right out of your hand. Then relax on a sandy beach with little or no crowds. Definitely a day to be remembered.

Make the Rounds Resort Hopping - Spend a few hours ogling at Disney’s wonderfully themed resorts. And best of all, it doesn’t cost a thing. Board the monorail at the Ticket and Transportation Center and hop off at each of the three Magic Kingdom resorts. First the Polynesian, a tropical wonderland, then the Grand Floridian, Disney’s flagship resort, and lastly the Contemporary where you’ll enjoy the Grand Concourse with the monorail silently gliding overhead. Out back you can catch a boat to the Wilderness Lodge, Disney’s most beautiful resort modeled after an early 1900s national park lodge. Then catch a boat to the Magic Kingdom and a ferry to the TTC where you started. It’s a grand circle that can’t be beat.

The Historic Bok Sanctuary is located about an hour southwest of Orlando near Lake Wales, also home to the Florida’s Natural Visitor Center that I visited earlier in the day. The Sanctuary was founded by Edward W. Bok, who immigrated to America in 1869 from the Netherlands when he was 6 years old. Through determination and hard work, he became a highly successful publisher and editor of Ladies’ Home Journal, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, respected humanitarian and an advocate of world peace and the environment.

I am always fascinated by stories of industry magnates and successful entrepreneurs who became philanthropists and donated their estates to the public. Edward W. Bok is definitely one of those fascinating individuals.

As a successful publisher, Edward Bok, a Pennsylvania resident, used to retreat to Florida in the winters and became enchanted with the beauty and vistas from Iron Mountain, which, at 298 feet above sea level, is the highest point in peninsular Florida. Awed by the tranquility of the area, he wanted to create a place that would “touch the soul with its beauty and quiet”, and he purchased land which he transformed into a sweeping landscape of lush gardens, designed by the famed landscape architect, Federick Law Olmstead Jr. The bird sanctuary houses 126 different species of birds as well as a variety of endangered plants and animal species.

The crowning jewel of the Historic Bok Estate is the Carillon and Belltower, a National Historic Landmark, built by the best craftsmen of the day. The splendid neo-gothic and Art Deco tower was built using a combination of coquina rock from St. Augustine, Florida, and pink and gray marble from Tate, Georgia. New York sculptor Lee Lawrie’s carvings adorn the tower and represent images of Florida’s native flora and faun as well as images from Greek myhthology and the Bible.

Edward Bok remembered the music of carillons from his childhood in Holland, and he commissioned the famous John Taylor Bellfoundry company of England to produce a world-class carillon for his “Singing Tower” as the focal point of the garden. This carillon is one of only 4 in Florida and its 60 bells weigh from 16 pounds to nearly 12 tons. Brief recorded carillon music is played every 30 minutes, and recitals are featured daily at 1 and 3 pm. During my visit I was able to catch the 1 pm performance, and just outside the Carillon Tower is a television screen that features a live broadcast of the carillonneur performance.

Another National Historic Landmark, Pinewood Estate, has been part of the Historic Bok Sanctuary since 1970. It represents one of the finest examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in the state of Florida. The grounds surrounding it were also designed by Frederick Law Olmstead Jr.

Originally named “El Retiro”, meaning “retreat” in Spanish, the estate was built in the early 1930s for Charles Austin Buck, a Bethlehem Steel vice president. He had made a fortune in the steel industry and wanted to build a winter estate where he could be surrounded by his 9 children and 18 grandchildren during the holidays.

The Mediterranean-style garden features a Spanish frog fountain that leads guests into an enchanting stone grotto at the front of the house. An Oriental moon gate fountain is located off the dining room porch and an English-style country garden with a rolling lawn and pond reflects the afternoon sunsets.

Charles Austin Buck was a great admirer of the Latin lifestyle and architecture, his “El Retiro” Mediterranean revival home has many characteristics of an antique Spanish villa, including a barrel-tile roof, thick walls, substantial carved doors and woodwork, and intricately detailed wrought iron. The entrance hall’s dramatic staircase features a different tile pattern on each riser. Colourful Spanish-style tiles were handmade in Tunisia and much of the original furniture was handcrafted in Cuba.

From November 25 to January 1, 2006, the Christmas at Pinewood home tour is available to visitors as a favourite holiday tradition. During my visit I had the pleasure of touring the villa as every room was superbly decorated by a variety of locally sponsored designers. Every room featured a docent that was able to provide insight into the unique history, features and furniture of each room. Amazingly much of the furnishings and artwork are original to the estate.

After visiting Pinewood Estate and the historic Carillon Tower I had a chance to explore the grounds of this amazing sanctuary, and its beautifully designed gardens indeed offer a wonderful retreat to nature.

The Pine Ridge Trail offers a unique nature experience, providing a glimpse into the native flora and delicate ecosystem of Florida’s Lake Wales Ridge. In ancient times, when ocean levels were higher, the Lake Wales Ridge was above water and formed a chain of islands. As a result, many plants and animals are unique to the Ridge which features rare plant species found nowhere else in the world. Thirteen of the species located here are on the federal endangered list. Many of these plants are grown in the Sanctuary’s Endangerd Plant Garden.

Being the nature lover that I am, I was enchanted by the beauty of the gardens and a variety of plants and blossoms captured my attention:

For me the Historic Bok Sanctuary was a real feast for the senses, and it will delight architecure and music lovers, history buffs and naturalists alike.
