Patterns And Chaos: Photography By Andreas Gursky

German photographer Andreas Gursky is well known for taking some of the most expensive photographs ever sold, including this 81 x 140″ print of Rhein II, which sold for $4.3 million in 2011:

Andreas’ style is consistent, and yet broad at the same time. He mostly photographs patterns and textures, resulting in both minimalist and chaotic photographs, depending on how busy the subject matter is.

While the photographs may not be everyone’s taste, Andreas’ images are represented by some of the largest galleries around the world, including the Tate Modern and MoMA, and he’s exhibited in countless more.

Andreas shoots mostly on large format film, and retouches or composites the scans digitally. Watch this video excerpt from a documentary about the great photographer, showing Gursky’s working method (The language is in German, but it’s still interesting to see Gursky at work!).

Inquisitive Grizzly Bear Eats A GoPro Camera

When Brad Josephs tried to get a close-up shot of a grizzly bear, he got more than he bargained for!

Brad is filming bears in Alaska for BBC’s Great Bear Stakeout, and managed to capture this awesome footage of a young grizzly getting very interested in his GoPro. Despite being bitten by the bear multiple times, the camera survived unscathed – very impressive!

This video reminds us of Roger de la Harpe’s GoPro camera being stolen by a lion.

Interiors Of The McLaren Technology Centre

Take a look at the majestic interiors and architecture of the highly advanced McLaren Technology Centre in England, as seen in these photos by James Leighton-Burns. The facility is the headquarters of the McLaren Formula 1 team, as well as McLaren Automotive, which has produced the Mercedes SLR, McLaren Mp4-12C and McLaren P1 supercars in recent years.

Flickr Interface Redesigned With Modern Look

Yahoo seems to be having a good week – Yesterday they announced that they will be acquiring the Tumblr microblogging platform, and today they revealed a new look for Flickr, their popular photo sharing platform.

Admittedly, the new look does not seem to be going down well with everyone, but this is often the case with major redesigns and changes. One perk few will be able to argue with is that every single Flickr user now gets 1TB of free space. Yup, 1000GB. That’s a lot of free cloud storage no matter how you look at it!

Incredible Underwater Photography By Ilse Moore

These brilliant photos were created by Johannesburg-based visual artist and photographer Ilse Moore.

“While my underwater photography often involves commercial shoots, my conceptual work speaks of a subconscious denial of reality. I have always been attracted to surreal imagery. I believe that photography as a medium lends a kind of realism to these ‘fantasies’, allowing it to exist in closer relationship to the viewer. I like that it suggests the possibility of an indiscernible truth. Shooting underwater seemed like the logical next step in finding a balance between the surreal world and my own reality…”

What do you get when you team one of the world’s largest brands with a rock-star photographer? One crazy photo shoot! Watch this behind the scenes video of a promotional shoot by Chase Jarvis for Samsung’s Series 9 monitors:

Asked to produce an image that would show off Samsung’s top-of-the-range Series 9 monitors, Chase drew inspiration from a reoccurring dream where he floats on top of colourful clouds, recreating the effect with powder canons and a trampoline. Exhibition: Dark Paradise By Krisjan Rossouw

Capetonian photographer Krisjan Rossouw‘s first solo exhibition, Dark Paradise, is currently on show at the Orms Print Room.

Dark Paradise is a series of exceptional nudes taken by Krisjan between 2010 and 2013, and the exhibition originally opened at the Castle in April before moving to the Orms Print Room on the corner of Roeland and Upper Canterbury Street. The photographs will be up for the next few weeks, so pop in and come take a look!
