COAT DRESS SEASON.

Long time, no update. I have been shuttling back and forth between London and Lagos for a while now. It has been a hell of a year and I'm struggling to stay on top of a lot of things, the main thing being my mental health. We move, regardless.

Once upon a time, I used to stock up on custom jewellery from Topshop. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, you name it. If it was on sale, I bought it. In more recent times, I have played it pretty safe. I have stuck to mostly studs and narrowed down my jewellery collection.

First things to go were the rings. Having tiny fingers, size "S" rings from high street retailers never fit right. (P.S. if you've got a rich Italian hottie that's looking for a wife, my engagement ring size is a U.S. 4.5). Then I got rid of the bracelets, the necklaces and other bits. I decided to stop impulse-buying cheap high street jewellery and invest in quality pieces. A side effect of adulthood? Mayhaps.

For two years, earrings have been my main accessory. I wear a necklace every now and then but I can not do without earrings. Even on days when I can not be bothered to make an effort with my appearance, I still put studs in the top two piercings on my left earlobe.

A few jewellery brands I have discovered for affordable and timeless earrings are Aurate, Kenneth Jay Lane, & Dannijo. I particularly like the packaging Aurate jewellery come in. The pouch that's included to store earrings is one of the classiest I have ever seen.

I will confess, I still check out the sale section for statement earrings every season. Mango and & Other Stories always have good stuff! When it comes to websites that stock multiple brands, I love a bargain and I’m always trawling The Outnet for discounted pieces.

If you're single like me but don't want to feel left out on Valentine's Day, why not arrange a Galentine's lunch with your closest female friends? Lagos has made me finally realise the importance of having female friendships. I used to be the girl that always used to hang out with boys but hardly anymore. Honestly on the day we shot this, I was moody all morning. Being around these girls cheered me up. I did still end up bad-mouthing a Taxify driver though, oops.

These photos were taken at Marcelino's Pastry in V.I. For bloggers looking for locations, I will warn you that you or your group have to spend a minimum of ₦8,000 in the restaurant to be allowed to use a digital camera on the premises. I'd advise you take advantage of this. Go with a few blogger friends and 3 changes of outfits each. That way it's easier to spend ₦8,000 and you can help each other out with photos. Don't say I never do anything for you. Make that money worth it.

Lade was the brain behind this post so props to her! If you're a guy, you can always arrange a video game night or a similar hangout with your fellow bros. If you're a loner and want a quiet day in, a glass of wine and Netflix would suffice. Do whatever makes you feel at peace. You don't deserve to be lonely on special occasions. This excludes serial killers and rapists.

MUST-HAVE DRESSES FOR 2019: THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS.

Part 3 here and we've got the LBD, also known as the little black dress. Now, I know the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a "lbd" is a short and probably clingy dress but I've left my short-dress-wearing-days behind me. In case you didn't notice from the past few posts, midi dresses and skirts are my new obsession. So yes, this is my own version of a little black dress. Don't get me wrong though, I will still pull out a tiny dress when the occasion calls for it, but it probably wouldn't be my first option.

The dress in this post is another PrettyLittleThing number. Am I the only one that thinks that their sizing is a bit off sometimes? I usually wear a 4 or 6 depending on the brand. I've got size 4 PLT dresses that fits perfect, I've also got size 6 dresses that are too tight and would have fit better if I'd bought an 8. The stubborn goat in me refuses to buy anything with an "8" tag when it's not an oversize fit that I'm looking for. Please, I know my size. I am not an 8.

Anyway, back to the dress. I'm wearing a size 6 in this post. It fits perfectly on the arms, however I would have preferred it if the elasticated waist was a bit tighter and the chest area less open. I had to wear a bodysuit on the inside to make it more work-appropriate. It's still a cute dress, the ruffles and pleats were what drew me to it. Shop the dress here.

Let's face it, animal print is here to stay. Personally, I am getting a bit tired of leopard and cheetah print. I find myself gravitating more towards tiger, zebra and dalmatian prints these days. When I saw this dress on the PLT website, I knew I had to have it! The only down-side is it's a bit tight around the tummy so I need to watch whatever I eat when I wear it out lol. Being the awesome food lover and photographer that I am, I entered and won the #vrwfoodiegrapher contest on Instagram. I decided to use the vouchers I won to treat myself. My sincere apologies to all the friends I promised to take out, lol. I won't lie, I have to thank restaurant week for helping me discover Zolene. It was one of the few places with an appealing menu on the visa restaurant week lineup. I mean, plantain croquettes and akara waffles? Yes, to Nigerian food with a twist! What really influenced my decision to go here was traffic on the day. I didn't feel like spending an hour in traffic just to eat food. Why is it that a majority of restaurants in Lagos are on Victoria Island? If you work in Ikoyi and are looking for somewhere nearby to have lunch, you should check out Zolene! Unfortunately, they do not open on Mondays. I learned this the hard way and ended up at La Taverna instead - cries in Uber fares.

STARTER

PLANTAIN CROQUETTES WITH BEEF

I am not a huge fan of plantains but these were nice. Not so great on their own but with their signature pepper sauce, fantastic! The beef was tasty too but it was tough. Trying to cut and chew it was a struggle. Weird people that like tough meat, this is for you. They were both served in warm wooden bowls.

MAIN

PORK SPARE RIBS & GREEN SALAD

Yooo, I was not expecting that much meat! This was by far the best deal out of all the restaurants I visited for restaurant week. You have the option of having the ribs with either sweet potato mash, fries or a green salad. I went with a salad for obvious reasons - #fitfam. Whatever the salad was tossed in was nice as well as the dressing served in the bowl. My only problem with this is that the olives in the salad weren't pitted. That was a nasty shock. The pork was well seasoned and very filling. I couldn't even eat up to half of the rack, I had to pack the rest up for dinner.

The waiter recommended the rocky cucumber mojito cocktail to me and now I'm doing the same to you. It's sweet, refreshing and inexpensive.

You've probably read all about my experience with Hard Rock Cafe's carrot cake. Well Zolene's was much better, tastier and moist although I got a strong feeling that they had microwaved old cake. I wasn't impressed with how it looked initially but the taste made up for it. I did not expect this to come with ice cream. I liked the toasted coconut chips on the ice cream. The ice cream itself? I was not a fan.

SERVICE & THOUGHTS

I was warmly welcomed by the staff here. The restaurant was a bit too dark for my liking. Perfect for private meals and conversations, but not for mobile food pictures. There was a 5% VAT and 10% service charge added to the total bill. My drink didn't come as part of the restaurant week deal so I had to pay an extra ₦1,500 (+15%) for that. Like I mentioned before, this was the best restaurant week deal I had. It was the lunch menu so I paid ₦8,050 for my meal i.e. ₦7,000 +15%. Without the deal, the starter cost ₦2,000, the main ₦8,700 and the dessert ₦2,500, bringing the total to ₦13,200 +15% i.e. ₦15,180. Saving ₦7,130, I got a 3-course meal for almost half the price! Other restaurants need to take note for the next restaurant week, these are the deals we need.

I always wanted to eat at La Taverna in Abuja before moving to Lagos. I don't know if the Lagos branch has got the same menu as the Abuja one but when I saw La Taverna on the list of restaurants participating in Visa Restaurant Week, it was a no-brainer for me. COMPLIMENTARY

I left work for lunch. I hadn't eaten all day because the plan was to get here and stuff my face. The complimentary bread was a nice touch. I didn't expect it but it came at the right time because the staff were being slow with service. In my starving state, this bread tasted like manna from the heavens. I forgot to ask what the sauce that accompanied the bread was but it went so well with it. Wow. I'm not even a fan of bread like that, it was probably the hunger.

STARTER

TACOS DE PULPO (OCTOPUS TACOS)

The name of this was definitely misleading for me. I expected the octopus to come in taco shells. Don't get me wrong, I love that the shells were substituted for sweet potato chunks, made it come across as more salad-like. This was very fresh and filling. I could eat it as a meal on its own.

MAIN

SMOKED LAMB RAVIOLI

The ravioli was my favourite thing. If you ever want to eat at La Taverna, I highly recommend this! Black olives are not my preference but they work well in this dish. I couldn't finish this so I had the rest packed up. I ate the leftover sauce with rice because food and money must not waste.

DESSERT

FRESHLY SQUEEZED PINEAPPLE JUICE

I bet you were expecting to see cake or some other sweet treat that would make you drool. Me too. I almost lost it when I was told that dessert wasn't available. They only had ice-cream. My initial plan was to get a doughnut but it turns out that they don't make their desserts. They get them from the bakery they share a yard with, XO Boutique bakery. Now, XO doesn't open on Mondays which unfortunately for me was the day I went. Usually I tend to ignore my lactose intolerance but on this particular day, I did not want to eat ice-cream. Can you believe that the waitress still wanted me to pay the full price for an incomplete three-course meal? I kindly informed her that there was no way that was going to happen and I ended up getting a glass of freshly squeezed pineapple juice as a replacement. Honestly, I was full after the complimentary bread and starter. I don't know how I would've eaten dessert.

SERVICE & THOUGHTS

The first person that attended to me was lost. When I asked for the restaurant week menu, he said they didn't have one... Guys, I had to stand up to look for the menu because he was obviously about to stress me out. Like I mentioned before, the service was slow. When I was ready to order, I called out for a waiter but no one came to me although I could hear them talking around the corner. I want to cut them some slack and say that they'd just opened and I was their first customer of the day but it's still unacceptable. Clearing plates and bringing out the next course took forever.

Octopus Tacos = ₦2,000. Smoke Lamb Ravioli = ₦4,500. Donut = ₦1,000. Total = ₦7,500. I thought the whole point of restaurant week was to get three-course meals at a discounted price but from my calculations, I ended up saving only ₦500, which isn't a lot to be honest. With the restaurant week lunch offer, I paid ₦7,000. This of course, excluded the service and consumption charges which were an extra 5% each.

Overall, great food but questionable service.

WHAT I WORE ON DAY 1 OF GTBANK FASHION WEEKEND 2018.

The initial plan was to wear this outfit to Lagos Fashion Week but I was ill for two out of three days. Lucky for me GTBank Fashion weekend was two weeks later so I was still able to rock it out. The jumpsuit is from a Nigerian brand called Tokatoka and it was loaned to me by The Republic, a store that stocks different Nigerian ready-to-wear and accessory brands! I'm tempted to purchase it because I love it so much. It's made of a see-through organza fabric and I felt a bit cheeky with my bum cheeks on display at the back. I wore my favourite ASOS everyday bodysuit underneath. I've got two pairs because it's the best basic body. I don't know why Asos hasn't restocked it yet but here's a similar bodysuit that I've got my eyes on in brown.

I didn't attend Day 2 because I was nursing a horrible hangover. I stayed home, cooked pasta and headed out in the evening to see the stage play adaptation of Lola Shoneyin's "The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives". The actors did an amazing job, a day well spent!

SABOR'S NEW MENU.

I'll confess, last month I was addicted to thrifting. I'd drag myself to Tejuosho market every market day, i.e. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I haven't been there since I got sick towards the end of last month and I won't lie, that's been fantastic for my bank account. I blame Ifeoma for showing me the good spots.

Both the top and jeans that I'm wearing in the photos above were thrifted for ₦1,200 and ₦1,000 respectively - I can't wait to show you guys the denim dress I got for ₦50 (£0.11)! I wore this to Sabor to try out new items on their menu a month ago. Keep scrolling for more photos and my thoughts.

I enjoyed everything that was served except the risotto. I believe I wasn't the only one who felt the same way. The chicken that came with the risotto was nice but the risotto itself was a no. I know a few people weren't fans of the sticky date pudding but I really liked it. My favourite dish was the seafood scampi followed closely by the fillet beef salad. Prior to this, I'd never had strawberries in a salad. The taste was unexpected but it worked well with the other flavours.

My IG followers would probably know that I've been to Sabor before. I tried the "Almond Nut Brownie" and the "Asian Style Crispy Calamari". The sweetness of the brownie was overwhelming for me and I struggled to finish it. I'd suggest that anyone having this should consider sharing with a friend or two. The calamari, on the other hand, was perfect. I particularly liked the vinaigrette that it came with. In my slightly intoxicated state, the vinaigrette kinda tasted like peppersoup and I almost abandoned my home training when the thought of drinking the leftover crossed my mind, ha!

A few friends and I headed to Hard Rock Cafe to try out their Visa Restaurant Week lunch menu, courtesy of our celebrity friend, Cassie Daves. I'll start off by saying that there were five of us and we shared three three-course meals. We had one of everything on the #vrw2018 menu except the Spicy Jollof Rice and I'd like to believe that we all left satisfied. Not stuffed but definitely satisfied. Below is a breakdown of what we had:

STARTERS

LEFT: GRILLED CHICKEN SUYA || CENTER: RED HOT CHILLI FRIES || RIGHT: ROCKIN' WINGS

Grilled Chicken Suya: This was decent. The menu claims that the skewers have got a "Hard Rock twist" to them but really, they tasted like regular chicken suya.

Red Hot Chilli Fries: I burst out laughing when I tasted this starter because the fries were not "red hot". These were the mildest "red hot" fries I have ever tasted. They're supposed to be cajun-spiced but I think they skipped that. Don't get me wrong, they were great fries but they did not match the description. Still, this was my favourite out of the three starters I tried. I liked the cheese sauce that came with the fries so much that I held on to it for the next course.

Rockin' Wings: These were okay and I haven't got much to say about them except that I think 7 is a weird amount of wings for a serving. It's usually 6 or 12? Typing this and looking over the menu, I've just realised that we were supposed to able to choose between having our wings coated with either Suya Spice or Chilli Pepper Sauce. The waitress didn't bring this up and I can't tell what we were served.

MAINS

TOP: SOUTHERN SPICE COCONUT CHICKEN CURRY WITH STEAMED RICE || BOTTOM LEFT: CLASSIC 8OZ BURGER WITH ONION RINGS || BOTTOM RIGHT: PASTA ARRABIATA

Southern Spice Coconut Chicken Curry with Steamed Rice: This was a hit! I wish we'd skipped the burger and got two of these, it was that good!

Classic 8oz Burger with Onion Rings: The burger was supposed to come with fries but right after the waitress cleared our starter plates she ran back out and announced that they had run out of fries. We were asked to choose either onion rings or a salad as a substitute. You guys, my friends tried to choose a salad. I stood up for what I believed in and we ended up having onion rings. I do not regret that decision. Hands down, these are the best onion rings I've eaten in Nigeria. It didn't feel or taste like I was eating solid oil - I'm looking at you Johnny Rockets - they were nice and crispy. I didn't try the burger but the people that did say that it was "just there" and "nothing special". There was no cheese in the burger and that was a surprise to me. Cheese could've made it better alas, cheapskates can't be choosers lol. I bet we could have asked for cheese added on at an extra cost.

Pasta Arrabiata with Garlic Bread: I assumed that there would be meat in this? Turns out this is the vegetarian option. Picky eaters beware, it isn't stated on the menu that there's broccoli in this. I get the feeling that Uzoamaka and I were the only ones that enjoyed this dish as everyone else was indifferent.

DESSERTS

TOP: HOT FUDGE BROWNIE || BOTTOM LEFT: FRESH APPLE COBBLER || BOTTOM RIGHT: THREE LAYER CARROT CAKE

Hot Fudge Brownie: First off, the brownie was rock solid. The chocolate sprinkles that were mentioned on the menu were nowhere to be found. Trying to eat this was like trying to eat a biscuit with a spoon. The menu describes it as a "fresh homemade brownie"... fresh? Okay. Taste-wise it wasn't bad. The struggle of trying to get the brownie on my spoon made me give up. Also, the brownie we were served looked nothing like the photo on the website. Laugh with me, please.

Fresh Apple Cobbler: The best dessert on the menu! This surpassed everyone's expectations, especially after trying the brownie. It was so good, we almost ate the plate. I wish there had been more to go round because it disappeared real quick.

Three Layer Carrot Cake: If you follow me on Instagram and watch my stories you probably know about my random carrot cake cravings. Carrot cake is probably my favourite type of cake. Coming from a carrot cake connoisseur, I would not recommend this carrot cake. Let's start with the obvious. How many layers can you count? Two. Where is the third layer? Why does it look like I was given a layer and a half? The menu describes it as a "moist carrot cake". It was for lack of a better phrase, "just there" in texture and taste. I'm really trying to hold back tears as I'm typing this because I was very disappointed, especially after seeing and expecting something close to the photo on Hard Rock Cafe's ig. I will add though that it was Cassie's first time tasting carrot cake and she liked it.

SERVICE & THOUGHTS

I really like the ambience and layout of the restaurant. They've got an outdoor seating area and a private beach at the back. They've also got overpriced, branded souvenirs for sale at the entrance. I've got my eye on a tee there alas, I can't bring myself to spend ₦10,500 on it.

Hard Rock Cafe is one of those places with the stupid no-camera policy that seems to be popular at most locations in Nigeria. What's hilarious is that you're allowed to take pictures with your phones but actual cameras aren't allowed. This is a huge joke because there are mobile phones on the market that have got cameras that can compete with quite a few entry-level dslrs and mirrorless cameras - the majority of what the public has. I'm talking sharp pictures with no details missing. What then is the point of banning cameras? I will never be able to wrap my head around this.

I went with my camera but ended up using my phone for the photos above because I couldn't be bothered to argue with anyone.

Overall, I wouldn't say we got the best service. Our waitress had a serious attitude problem that we noticed at the beginning of our meal. When it was time to pay, she handed over the bill and walked away without waiting to ask us how we would be paying or if we had any issues with the bill. She disappeared. While trying to figure out why there was an extra ₦2,500 added to the bill, I tracked down a different waitress. I asked her what the service charge was and she didn't know what I was talking about. A shame to be honest. She had to send for the manager to speak to us. That's basic information that staff should know. It turns out that the service charge there is a whopping 20% of your total bill. That is the most I've ever had to pay for the subpar service that most Nigerian restaurants offer. Usually, it's 10% and even that makes my skin crawl.

The manager then apparently scolded our first waitress - the disappearing one - thinking she was the one that didn't know the service charge. Little Miss Haughty then came to our table to confront us, screaming that we falsely accused her. All this before rudely apologising for walking away. ₦5,000 for that service? Lovely.
