Fr. Josiah's bio:

FATHER JOSIAH TRENHAM was born in Glendale, CA on October 6th, 1967.

In 1989 he received his B.A. in Social Science/History from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA, where his senior thesis was on the famous American theologian and revivalist, the Reverend Jonathan Edwards.

He received his M.Div. in 1992 from Westminster Theological Seminary, Escondido, CA, having also studied at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, MS, and Orlando, FL under the Reformed theologians Drs. R.C. Sproul, John Gerstner and JohnFrame.

In 2004 he received his Ph.D. in theology from the University of Durham, England where he studied under the tutelage of the internationally renowned Orthodox Christian theologian and professorof patristics, Father Andrew Louth.

Father Josiah’s doctoral dissertation was entitled Marriage and Virginity according to St. John Chrysostom. Father Josiah is continuing his academic pursuits. His dissertation is under contract for publication by St. Herman Press under the title Terrestrial Angels: Marriage and Virginity according to St. John Chrysostom. A popularization and topical expansion of the dissertation is planned by the same press under the title God’s Gifts:Marriage, Monasticism and Sexuality according to the PatristicTradition.

Since 2004, Father Josiah has served as Adjunct Professor of History at California Baptist University (Riverside, CA) where he teaches several courses each year including The Cross and the Crescent: Christianity and Islam and The History of California. Father Josiah also participates in yearly academic forums and symposia and conducts numerous parish retreats each year throughout the United States and Canada. He is a member of the Orthodox Theological Society of America.

In the midst of his years at Westmont College Father Josiah met and married Catherine Christy of Mt. Shasta, CA on May 22nd, 1988. From their happy union have been born nine children, six boys and three girls: Chad, Aidan, Victoria, Anastasia, Basil, Cassian, Luke, Garet, and Olivia.
While still in seminary Father Josiah was licensed as a minister by the Presbyterian Church in America, and later became an ordained clergyman of the Reformed Episcopal Church. In 1993 he was received into the Orthodox Christian Church, and ordained to the holy priesthood by His Grace Bishop Basil (Essey), Bishop of Wichita and Mid-America of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese

From 1994-1996 Father Josiah served as assistant pastor at St. Athanasius Orthodox
Christian Church, Santa Barbara, CA. Father also taught religion at Bishop DiegoGarcia Catholic High School in Santa Barbara. In 1997 Father Josiah served as resident priest at Project Mexico’s St. Innocent Orthodox Orphanage in Rosarito, Baja California, living in Mexico with his family. From 1998 until the present Father Josiah has been pastor of St. Andrew Orthodox Christian Church, Riverside, CA.

2nd Avenue Dinner Thanksgiving Meal

Philoptochos of Holy Trinity will be serving dinner to the elderly and homeless from 2:30 to 4:30 on Thanksgiving Day at Mid-City Concerns, 1222 W 2nd Avenue. The food will be prepared at Holy Trinity after Liturgy until about 2pm then transported downtown to be served.

Helpers are needed to make about 400 turkey sandwiches as well as heat up, transport, and serve the traditional turkey dinner that has been prepared by Campus Kitchens of Gonzaga University. Clean up assistance is also appreciated. Even if you can only help out for an hour everyone is welcome to join in. Thank you to everyone who has helped so far wrapping the last of the pumpkin cookies, portioning cranberry sauce and roasting a lot of turkey for sandwiches.

This is the 4th year the Philoptochos has served a meal on Thanksgiving Day. It is an incredible blessing to be a part of it. Please call Holy Trinity at 509-328-9310 if you have questions.

2nd Avenue Dinner Christmas Day

This year, the Philoptochos will also be serving a meal on Christmas day. They will also be assembling gift bags to be given to the homeless for Christmas. The goal is to create 200 bags that will contain at least the following items: knit hat, pair of white tube socks, pair of gloves, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, lip balm,comb and candy.

Holy Trinity Sunday School students have been asked to decorate a Christmas Card with an icon of the Theotokos on the front for each gift bag.

So far, we have received 200 hats, 200 pairs of gloves, 200 bars of soap, 10 pairs of socks, 144 small tubes of toothpaste, and three bags of mints! If you would like to donate money or items, please contact Holy Trinity. The generosity we have seen so far has been truly amazing. Thank you!

Lenten Recipe

Pumpkin Pudding or Pie Filling

1 5.1 oz pkg Vanilla Instant Pudding & Pie Filling
1 1/4 cup Vanilla Soy Milk (use 1 cup for pie filling)
3/4 cup canned or fresh pumpkin
3/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger & allspice)

Mix together ingredients. Let set for 5 minutes for pudding. For pie, put in graham cracker or shortbread crust and refrigerate for at leat 1 hour.

Orthodox Youth Outreach

ATTENTION TEENS: On Nov. 14 - 16, 2008, Orthodox Youth Outreach (OYO) invites teens from the Spokane area to participate in a life-changing weekend of fun and outreach to the poor and homeless. We will spend the weekend trying to live out Christ's commandment to love the least of these as we work with the impoverished of Spokane. Our weekend will begin on Friday, Nov. 14 at 2pm, and we will conclude at 2pm on Sunday, Nov. 16. The weekend will consist of serving at soup kitchens and rescue missions, as well as doing fun activities where we will meet some of the homeless of Spokane and learn about the complexity of poverty and homelessness.

Founded by Fr. Kevin Scherer, OYO is a ministry of NAC Teen SOYO of the Antiochian Archdiocese which has been designed to provide local parishes and youth workers with the resources necessary to involve junior and senior high students in local community service and short-term mission projects. The purpose of the program is to encourage our youth to live out their faith through service to others. OYO provides opportunities for youth to get involved with outreach at different levels and help them grow into positions of student leadership. Since our first trip in January 2004, OYO has conducted 30 mission trips to major cities across the U.S. and Canada, as well as several international trips. The program has been very successful.

We hope you will join us for an exciting weekend of serving the poor and learning what it means to follow Christ on Nov. 14 - 16, 2008. The all-inclusive cost to participate is $150. Holy Trinity Fundraiser

On October 25th, 6:30 pm, Holy Trinity will hold a fundraising auction event, to raise funds to replace and repair the windows in our hall and church. The total cost is estimated to be $15,000.00. We are currently collecting bids for the work. Your help is vital to our success.

Here’s how you can help:

· Look around your home and community to collect quality items for the auction. Ask your hairdresser, your manicurist, the favorite restaurant you go to, and others to donate a service to be auctioned. ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE

· Attend the auction on the 25th and ask your friends and neighbors to join you. Even if you do not win any of the items up for bid, the night is guaranteed to be fun with Greek music and dancing, food, fun and fellowship for a good cause. But if you do win an item, remember that YOUR PAYMENT IS TAX DEDUCTIBLE

· If you cannot attend, send in a cash donation to support the fundraiser. Send all donations to the church. No amount is too small and remember again that ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

He entered the Orthodox Church in 1981. Fr. James is a graduate of St. Vladimir’s Seminary and was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in 1988. He is the pastor of St. Paul Orthodox Church in Brier, WA., and the author of the recently published book, “Surprised by Christ, My

The Philoptochos of Holy Trinity will be offering an All-You-Can-Eat Taco Bar to benefit OCF, the Orthodox college campus ministry this Sunday, Sept 7th after 10am Liturgy.

There will be a presentation by Justin Dubruill about his OCF Real Break trip to Constantinople where he met Patriarch Bartholomew and restored a church along with other OCF college students.

Cost is $10 adults - $5 children under 12 - Free for college students with ID.

His Eminence Archbishop Seraphim of Ottawa (OCA Bishop of Canada) will be visiting St Aidan to celebrate their feast day.

Bible Bowl Victory Celebration BBQ

Holy Myrrhbearing Women will host a Celebration BBQ outing on the Sunday before Labor Day, August 31st, in Naples, Idaho (check the parish website for maps). They are inviting all of the parishes of the area to celebrate this victory with them. The celebration will be held on Sunday, August 31st with a special Service of Thanksgiving following the Divine Liturgy (Orthros/Matins 8:45 am & Divine Liturgy 10:00 am) and then we will travel down to Naples for the afternoon. It will begin about 1:00pm, but latecomers are welcome.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and buns will be provided for the Bible Bowl Celebration BBQ. As for the beverages, side dishes, desserts, etc., everyone is encouraged to bring something pot luck. Lawn chairs, card tables, sports equipment, blankets, musical instruments...it is a good idea to bring as much of this type of thing as possible as well.

James will speak at St. John Orthodox Church, addressing “The Jewish Roots of Christian Worship.” This talk will address Church architecture as he relates it to the heavenly tabernacle and the Lord’s direction on building the earthly tabernacle in Exodus.

Christ the Savior at Valleyfest

Sept 20th 10am on: CTS will have a booth at Valleyfest at Mirabeau Park, the Valley's only community festival. They will sell miscellaneous goods, and hope to raise awareness of their presence in the general community.

Fr James Bernstein in our area!

Fr. James Bernstein, author of the newly published, Surprised by Christ, will be speaking in the Coeur d’ Alene and Post Falls area in just a couple weeks. Raised as the son of an Orthodox Jewish rabbi, Bernstein became a national chess champion who at age sixteen converted to Christianity. Involved in Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and the Christian World Liberation Front, he went on to found the “Jews for Jesus” organization with Moishe Rosen in Berkley, California in the early 1970’s. Later converting to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Fr. James presently lives with his wife Bonnie outside of Seattle, Washington, where he serves as pastor of St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church.

Greek Dinner Festival

The Greek Dinner Festival is September 25, 26 & 27 at Holy Trinity. Dinner Tickets are $15.00 adults/$6.00 for children under 12 at the door. Advance tickets will be available for $12.00 adults/$6.00 children.

A Word from the Saints

"If you want to find perfect love, go sell all your belongings, give them to the poor, go where you find a master and become a slave. Can you do this and be perfect?

You say this is too heavy? Then do something else. Don't sell yourself as a slave. Just sell your belongings and give them all to the poor. Can you do it? Or do you still find this too heavy a task?

All right, you cannot give away all your belongings. Then give half, or a third, or a fifth. Is this even too heavy? Then give one tenth. Can you do that? Is it still too heavy?

How about this: Don't sell yourself as a slave. Don't give a penny to the poor. Only do this: Don't take your poor brother's coat, don't take his bread, don't persecute him, don't eat him alive. If you don't want to do him any good, at least do him no harm. Just leave him alone. Is this also too heavy?

You say you want to be saved. But how? How can we be saved if everything we are called to do is too heavy? We descend and descend until there is no place further down. God is merciful, yes, but he also has an iron rod."

RSVP Requested for Celebration BBQ

Hamburgers, hot dogs and buns will be provided for the Bible Bowl Celebration BBQ (see below), so it is extremely important that you RSVP if you are able to come so that there is enough food!!! You can simply email Fr Gregory Horton if you are able to come. As for the beverages, side dishes, desserts, etc., everyone is encouraged to bring something pot luck. Lawn chairs, card tables, sports equipment, blankets, musical instruments...it is a good idea to bring as much of this type of thing as possible as well. Don't forget to RSVP!!!

SNAP Sack Dinner

Assistance is needed preparing food at Holy Trinity for the SNAP Sack Dinner, transporting it to the site, serving it and/or cleaning up. Dinner is served downtown at Mid-City Concerns, 1222 W 2nd Ave from 5-6 pm. Send an e-mail to coordinate times for food prep, etc.

Funds are also needed for purchasing food for the dinner.

It has been a tremendous blessing to our parishes to have the opportunity to serve the less fortunate through the SNAP Sack Dinner.

On the Horizon

Bible Bowl Celebration BBQ

Holy Myrrhbearing Women will host a Celebration BBQ outing on the Sunday before Labor Day, August 31st, in Naples, Idaho (check the parish website for maps). They are inviting all of the parishes of the area to celebrate this victory with them. The celebration will be held on Sunday, August 31st with a special Service of Thanksgiving following the Divine Liturgy (Orthros/Matins 8:45 am & Divine Liturgy 10:00 am) and then we will travel down to Naples for the afternoon. It will begin about 1:00pm, but latecomers are welcome. Please RSVP. (see note under Announcements above)

OCF Sunday fundraiser

The Philoptochos of Holy Trinity will be offering an All-You-Can-Eat Taco Bar to benefit OCF, the Orthodox college campus ministry. There will be a presentation by Justin Dubruill about his OCF Real Break trip to Constantinople where he met Patriarch Bartholomew and restored a church along with other OCF college students. Cost is $10 adults/$5 children under 12/Free for college students with ID. Sunday Sept 7th after Liturgy.

Announcements

Victory!

The Bible Bowl Team from Holy Myrrhbearing Women Mission in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, consisting of Benjamin Horton, Cindy Matthews and Stephanie Matthews, took FIRST PLACE (Yes, the GOLD MEDAL) at the North American Bible Bowl Championships for the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America on July 26th.

The featured study book was 1 Corinthians and they had the material almost memorized...the entire letter! The Dioceses of the West and Northwest had never won a championship before so this was a great first step. Bishop JOSEPH congratulated them and will make a presentation to them when he visits the mission the second Sunday after Pascha.

Inquirers' Class at St John the Baptist in Post Falls

St John the Baptist in Post Falls is beginning an Inquirers' Class for those wanting to learn more of Holy Orthodoxy. This class will normally meet on Tuesday evenings, after Vespers (which will be celebrated at 6:00 P.M.) at the home of a family from the parish . Lenten Recipe

Spicy Black Bean Soup

Ingredients:

1/2 large onion, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
1 teaspoon garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons habanero pepper sauce
1/2 pinch black pepper
2 cups vegetable broth
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans
1/2 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn
1/2 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes

Cooking Instructions:

Saute onion, carrots and garlic for a few minutes. Add habanero pepper sauce and black pepper. Stir in vegetable broth, 1 can of beans and corn. Bring to a boil.

Meanwhile, in a food processor or blender, process remaining can of beans and tomatoes until smooth. Stir into boiling soup mixture, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 15 minutes.

(Canned tomatoes with hot peppers add a little extra zing, or to turn down the heat, use less habanero sauce.)

Welcome Simeon John!

We proudly announce the birth of Fr. Michael and Kh. Makrina Shanbour's first child, Simeon John Shanbour. Simeon arrived on July 22, weighing in at 5 lb. 14 oz., and measuring 17 1/2 ". Congratulations, Fr. Michael and Kh. Makrina! and may God grant you all many blessed years!

We will be hiking the grounds of the gardens followed by dinner in the park. Meet in the parking lot next to the Corbin Art Center at 6pm.

Please note: (From the brochure) "The Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens are situated on a steep hillside with an elevation of approximately 120 vertical feet. As a historic site, to preserve historic integrity the structures, staircases and trails retain their original design. You will experience numerous steps, inclines and a lack of handrails." So in other words...wear appropriate footwear.

Dinner, hiking and discussion.

Please wear appropriate footwear.

To Riverside State Park Bowl & Pitcher: From I-90 take exit 280 (Maple Street) go north across the Spokane River, turn left at the second stop light onto Maxwell. (Please note: If Maple is still closed, take the Monroe St exit and turn left on Maxwell.) Follow Maxwell, which becomes Pettit Dr., then Downriver Dr. and then becomes N. Aubrey L. White Pkwy at the park entrance. Continue on for two miles downriver to the Bowl & Pitcher day-use area and campground.

We will meet in the picnic area next to the parking lot. Follow the picnic signs.

Picnic and swimming. There is also beach volleyball if it is available. Parents and siblings are welcome since this is the last meeting of the summer.

We will meet at the gate at 6pm. Swimming is until 7pm followed by dinner.

The next teen event is to be on Thursday, July 24 from 6-8 pm, at Brown's Park in Spokane Valley (South of Christ the Savior). Directions are below. All youth aged 12-18ish are invited for supper, Volleyball, fun, and faith!

Directions: I-90 Pines Exit, South on Pines Rd. (At 16th the road will Y into Hwy 27. Stay in the right lane so you will continue on Pines). Brown's Park is located on the left hand side at Pines and 32nd Ave.

Summer Teen Gathering

Last Thursday evening the Teens from Holy Trinity, Christ the Savior, and St. John the Baptist got together in Mirabeau Park for our first summer teen gathering. See pics below! It was interesting trying to eat off paper plates in 40-50 mile an hour winds but well worth the effort. Thanks to Nick Dawson for planning and leading our event. We ended the evening with some spiritual discussion. (From Fr. Michael)

Fr Michael did a good job impersonating a pirate used car salesman, but Jacob Gabriel's Scottish pirate used car salesman won the contest.

David was a bit relieved to find out that Lydia & Yuli would be shaving the balloon and not his beard!

Joe was expecting the worst, but Kelsey and Karly have steady hands.
