Los Comisionados Hawkins y Smith Inician el Proyecto “Homeless Connect 2009" en el OHP

Condado de Osceola, Florida – Los Comisionados del Condado de Osceola Fred Hawkins, Hijo y Ken Smith ayudaron al dar inicio al evento conocido como Proyecto “Homeless Connect 2009" el cual se llevó a cabo el pasado viernes en el Osceola Heritage Park. El evento es un programa de un día de una Red de Servicios para Personas sin Hogar (HSN) para proveer disponibilidad, servicios y vivienda convenientemente en un mismo lugar para hombres, mujeres y familias que experimentan la falta de vivienda en el Condado de Osceola.

"Este Proyecto de “Homeless Connect” es un ejemplo de la colaboración comunitaria de la que estamos tan orgullosos en nuestro condado. Confiamos en esta colaboración para ayudar a tratar con los difíciles tiempos económicos que todos enfrentamos, sobre todo cuando se trata de la falta de vivienda" dijo Hawkins. "Nuestro objetivo hoy es ayudar a unir a nuestros ciudadanos con los servicios que necesitan para ser autosuficientes y estar alojados establemente tan pronto sea posible, de modo que los servicios de conección que hacen hoy les provean un mejor mañana."

El evento ofreció servicios y donaciones de más de 50 agencias sin fines de lucro, grupos religiosos, agencias del condado y negocios locales, e incluyó Asistencia médica, una ducha caliente y comida, Refugio, habilidades de Posibilidad de empleo, vales de Alimento y Ropa, Servicios Legales (Asistencia para obtener documentos legales y de identification), Servicios de Salud Mental y servicios y orientación acerca del Abuso de Sustancias, Solicitudes para Beneficios del Veterano, Solicitudes para cupones de alimento y otros beneficios por medio del Departamento de Niños y Familias, Identificación, Permisos de Conducir, Reemplazos de Certificados de Nacimiento y de Tarjeta de Seguro Social por el Departamento de Automóviles, la Administración de Seguro Social, y la Oficina de Estadísticas Vitales del Condado de Osceola.

El evento atrajo a aproximadamente 400 personas sin hogar que viven en los campos, en las calles, en los vehículos y en edificios abandonados en el condado, así como familias que viven en cuartos de motel a lo largo del corredor de la 192.

Commissioners Hawkins, Smith Kick Off 2009 "Project Homeless Connect" at Osceola Heritage Park

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Commissioners Fred Hawkins, Jr. and Ken Smith helped kick-off the 2009 “Project Homeless Connect” event held last Friday at Osceola Heritage Park. The event is a Homeless Services Network (HSN) one-day program to provide outreach, services and housing in a convenient one-stop model for men, women and families experiencing homelessness in Osceola County.

“This Project Homeless Connect is an example of the community collaboration that we are so proud of in our county. We rely on this collaboration to help deal with the difficult economic times we are all facing, especially when it comes to the issue of homelessness,” said Hawkins. “Our goal today is to help connect our citizens to the services they need to become self-sufficient and stably-housed as quickly as possible, so that the service connections they make today will afford them a better tomorrow.”

The event provided services and donations from more than 50 nonprofits, faith-based groups, county agencies and local businesses, and included Medical care, A hot shower and meal, Shelter, Employability skills, Food and Clothing vouchers, Legal Services (Support for obtaining legal documents and IDs), Mental Health and Substance Abuse services and counseling, Veteran’s Benefit Applications, Application for food stamps and other benefits through the Department of Children and Families, Identification, Driver’s License, Birth Certificate and Social Security Card Replacement by the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security Administration, and Osceola County Vital Statistics.

The event drew an estimated 400 homeless persons living in camps, on the streets, in vehicles and in abandoned buildings in the county, as well as families living in motel rooms along the US 192 corridor.

District One Town Hall Meeting Well Attended

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Commissioner Michael Harford recently held a Town Hall meeting to update citizens on various projects affecting residents living in District 1. Dozens of interested citizens turned out for the meeting, held in the Celebration Community Center this past Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

"I am very pleased, both with the format and the turnout,” said Harford. “The update meetings truly are an effective way to bring government to our citizens, which makes us all the more accessible, especially to those folks who can’t get away from work during the daytime."

Ceremonia de Corte de Cinta en el Centro Comunitario Roberto Guevara en Buenaventura Lakes

"Cuando una de nuestras visiones se hace realidad, nos da un sentido de alegría, logro y aspiración.," dijo Quiñones. " Después de muchas reuniones, traslado de programas y desafíos por cumplir con fechas límites, el Centro Comunitario Roberto Guevara finalmente abre sus puertas, a un costo final de $1,400,000 - ahorrando una cantidad sustancial del presupuesto aprobado para este proyecto."

Este centro social de tecnología avanzada servirá como oficina central para muchos programas durante todo el año, durante la semana y además de celebraciones los fines de semana. El centro comunitario fue nombrado en honor al Comisionado del Condado de Osceola Roberto Guevara, quien falleció en el 2000 mientras todavía estaba en el poder.

Ribbon Cutting at Robert Guevara Community Center in Buenaventura Lakes

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Chairman John Quiñones and residents of the Buenaventura Lakes community will mark the grand re-opening of the recently renovated Robert Guevara Community Center with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, November 20th at 5:30 p.m.

“When one of our visions becomes a reality, it gives us a sense of joy, accomplishment and further aspiration,” said Quiñones. “After many meetings, relocation of programs, and challenges for meeting deadlines, the Robert Guevara Community Center is open, with a final cost of $1,400,000 - saving a substantial amount from the approved budget for this project.”

The state-of-the-art community center will serve as headquarters for many programs held both year-round and during the week, in addition to weekend celebrations. With 2,917 square-feet added, there is now a total of approximately 9,400 square feet of interior space; expanded and improved features include offices, a large conference room, a new exercise / dance studio, several meeting rooms, kitchen, and a large multi-purpose assembly room with a dance area for scheduled activities that can accommodate 389 people.

In addition, the facility will house an Osceola County Sheriff’s satellite office, which may also be used as a base for Neighborhood Watch meetings.

The community center was named in honor of former Osceola County Commissioner Robert Guevara, who died in 2000 while still in office.

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Public Works was recently featured in an article in "Public Works Magazine" for its innovative use of the construction manager-at-risk program for the county's numerous road construction projects.

The article appeared in the national industry magazine that has a print circulation of 65,000 and a web presence that reaches the world.

Temporary Road Closures in ChampionsGate for Runners Classic

Osceola County, Florida

Osceola County, Florida – Several roads within the ChampionsGate development will be temporarily closed between 7:30-9:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2009 for the Runners Classic event held there between 7:00-11:00 a.m.

The event includes a 10K, 5K and Children’s Fun Run with approximately 1,000-1,500 attendees.

The temporary road closures within the ChampionsGate development will occur for the 5K and 10K running events, and include:
1. ChampionsGate Blvd., between Masters Blvd. and Legends Blvd.
2. Legends Blvd., north of ChampionsGate Blvd.,
3. Laura Lane, between Legends Blvd. and S. Goodman Rd.
4. S. Goodman Rd., between Masters Blvd. and Laura Lane
5. Masters Blvd., between S. Goodman Rd. and ChampionsGate Blvd.

Osceola County, Florida – Residents and business owners are invited to participate in a special area planning study for the greater St. Cloud region. This is not an annexation. Citizen input on community character and a development vision for the region is encouraged.

Several opportunities for public input have been scheduled below. The first set of meetings, to be held on Wednesday, November 4th, is for information gathering and public comment. The meeting on November 19th will be to present preliminary findings from the earlier meetings.

Osceola County Commissioner Michael Harford and Staff Meet with W192 Businesses

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County District 1 Commissioner Michael Harford, along with County Manager Michael Freilinger and Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) Director Tom Lang, met with business owners recently to discuss short-term and long-term opportunities specific to the West 192 area.

"My concern for our smaller local businesses along the US 192 corridor during this period of economic distress demands a different approach to this challenge,” said Commissioner Harford. “I am encouraging our smaller local businesses to organize and provide a consistent voice of the concerns they have to the Commission and Tourism Advisory Board. When organized, the group will provide additional information that will not only apply today, but also provide a foundation for future growth of our tourism corridor. I look forward to the strengthening of this vital corridor and its impact on the economic health of our county.”

El Comisionado del Condado de Osceola Fred Hawkins, Jr. Presidirá la Caminata “GREAT STRIDES”

Condado de Osceola, Florida – El Comisionado del Condado de Osceola Fred Hawkins, Jr. fue nombrado recientemente como el Presidente de la Caminata “GREAT STRIDES” 2010 en el Condado de Osceola por la Fundación de Fibrosis Quística y su sede de la Florida Central.

El evento de “GREAT STRIDES” se llevará a cabo el sábado, 8 de mayo, 2010 en el St. Cloud Lakefront. “GREAT STRIDES” recauda fondos críticos para investigación que salve vidas, educación y programas de cuidado para fibrosis quística, una enfermedad genética mortal.

“Con tanta investigación prometedora en el horizonte, es más importante que nunca que recaudemos cada dólar que podamos para combatir la Fibrosis Quística y mejorar las vidas de las personas con esta enfermedad,” dijo el Comisionado Hawkins. “Estoy agradecido por las contribuciones de cada voluntario y donante quienes apoyan “GREAT STRIDES”, y ansío alcanzar la meta del año 2010.”

Caminatas de “GREAT STRIDES” se llevarán a cabo en 600 localidades através del país — incluyendo St. Cloud — desde marzo a junio.

La Fundación de Fibrosis Quística ha sido reconocida como una de las organizaciones benéficas más eficientes del país. Casi 90 centavos de cada dólar recaudado por la organización sirve para el estudio de la enfermedad y programas de cuidado.

Osceola County Commissioner Fred Hawkins, Jr. to Chair GREAT STRIDES Walk in Osceola County

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Commissioner Fred Hawkins, Jr. was recently named as the
2010 Chair of GREAT STRIDES in Osceola County by the Central Florida Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation.

The GREAT STRIDES event will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the St. Cloud Lakefront. GREAT STRIDES raises critical funds for life-saving research, education and care programs for cystic fibrosis, a fatal genetic disease.

“With so much promising research on the horizon, it’s more important than ever that we raise every dollar we can to fight CF and improve the lives of people with this disease,” said Commissioner Hawkins. “I am grateful for the contributions of each volunteer and donor who support GREAT STRIDES, and look forward to making 2010 a milestone year.”

GREAT STRIDES walks will occur at 600 sites across the country — including St. Cloud — from March to June.

The CF Foundation has been recognized as one of the most efficient charities in the country. Nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised by the CF Foundation is available to fund CF research and care programs.
