Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) is a cross-platform, free and open source multimedia library written in C that presents a simple interface to various platforms graphics, sound, and input devices. It is widely used due to its simplicity.

SDL has the word "layer" in its title because it is actually a wrapper around operating-system-specific functions. The main purpose of SDL is to provide a common framework for accessing these functions. For further functionality beyond this goal, many libraries have been created to work on top of SDL.

Software developers use it to write computer games and other multimedia applications that can run on many operating systems: Android, iOS, Linux, Mac OS X, Windows and other platforms. It manages video, events, digital audio, CD-ROM, threads, shared object loading, networking and timers.

SDL acts as a cross-platform wrapper, providing support for 2D pixel operations, sound, file access, event handling, timing and threading. It is often used to complement OpenGL by setting up the graphical output and providing mouse and keyboard input, which are not supported by OpenGL.

The library is divided into several subsystems, namely the video (handles both surface functions and OpenGL), audio, CD-ROM, joystick, and timer subsystems. Besides this basic, low-level support, there also are a few separate official libraries that provide some more functions. These comprise the "standard library", and are provided on the official website and included in the official documentation:

SDL_image — support for multiple image formats

SDL_mixer — complex audio functions, mainly for sound mixing

SDL_net — networking support

SDL_ttf — TrueType font rendering support

SDL_rtf — simple Rich Text Format rendering

The syntax of SDL is function-based: all operations done in SDL are done by passing parameters to functions. Special structures are also used to store the specific information SDL needs to handle. There are a few different subsystems SDL categorizes its functions under:

- The video, events and threads subsystem: this provides functions for video,

multi-threading, and event handling

- The audio subsystem: this provides functions for audio

- The time subsystem

- The joystick subsystem

- The CD-ROM subsystem

OS X v10.8 "Mountain Lion" - Download

OS X v10.8 "Mountain Lion" was released on July 25, 2012. It incorporates some features seen in iOS 5, which include Game Center, support for iMessage in the new Messages messaging application, and Reminders as a to-do list app separate from iCal (which is renamed as Calendar, like the iOS app). It also includes support for storing iWork documents in iCloud.

Notification Center, which makes its debut in Mountain Lion, is a desktop version similar to the one in iOS 5.0 and higher. Application pop-ups are now concentrated on the corner of the screen, and the Center itself is pulled from the right side of the screen. Mountain Lion also includes more Chinese features including support for Baidu as an option for Safari search engine, QQ, 163.com and 126.com services for Mail, Contacts and Calendar, Youku, Tudou and Sina Weibo are integrated into share sheets.

Scientific Linux 5.10 has finally arrived after a long hiatus, and it's more of a general update with no new features or important changes. Scientific Linux 5.10 provides updated versions, specifically versions 5.1 and 5.5, of the MySQL packages as software collections. In order to migrate from MySQL 5.0 to 5.5, you must first update to MySQL 5.1. Note that the MySQL 5.1 packages are not supported and are provided only for the purposes of migration to MySQL 5.5. You should not use MySQL 5.1 on any of your production systems,” the developer notes.

The first stable edition, Pear Linux Comice OS 4, was released on March 23. There was a standard desktop edition, a netbook edition, and a KDE edition. The KDE edition is in first beta. This article presents a review of the standard desktop edition. An installation image is available for 32- and 64-bit architectures, each weighing in at about 1.1 GB.

Pear Linux Comice OS 4 is based on Ubuntu, the installing process is identical to that of Ubuntu or Linux Mint. However, one negative point of Pear Linux Comice OS 4 is that there is no Wubi option for you to try it inside Windows, so if you want a full experience with Pear Linux Comice OS 4, you need to install it as a dedicated OS. But from my experience, the installing is very fast, it took me only around 15 minutes to get Pear Linux Comice OS 4 fully installed in my laptop. Here are some screenshots of the installing process of Pear Linux Comice OS 4.

The first good thing about Pear Linux Comice OS 4 is that unlike the former versions, this time the default language is English instead of French so it will appeal more users. And since Comice OS is inspired of Mac OS, you shouldnt be surprised to know Comice OS looks really like Mac OS. Pear Linux Comice OS 4 uses Gnome3 as the window manager, but unlike Linux Mint, there is only one silver panel at the top of the screen. On this panel, you will find the common indicators that also appear on the panel of Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Pear Linux Comice OS 4 uses docky as the launcher, and put it at the bottom of the screen. Docky helps you to launch applications and switch between applications. By default, Docky in Pear Linux Comice OS 4 is set to be always visible so it will consume some vertical space. You can change the behavior of Docky by right-clicking on the seperator line ( next to the trash icon), the setting window of Docky will appear and you can choose the "intellhide" option to make Docky hide when you open apps. When you open the setting window of Docky, you can also drag the Docky panel to other places other than the bottom of the screen. One bad thing is that the default wallpaper is too bright so it's really hard to see the indicator spot on the Docky panel. The default settings of Docky here will perhaps suit better with a dark wallpaper.

CentOS-6.2 is based on the upstream release EL 6.2 and includes
packages from all variants. All upstream repositories have been combined into one, to make it easier for end users to work with.

There are some important changes to this release compared with the previous versions of CentOS and we highly recommend reading this announcement along with the Release Notes.

LiveCDs and LiveDVDs for i386 and x86_64 are also released. These bring in the ability to directly install from the live media.

There is also a minimal install CD that will get you a very small base install that you can add to.

BlankOn Linux is a distribution created in cooperation between the Indonesian Linux User Group and the Indonesian Ubuntu community. Its primary goal is to deliver a desktop-oriented Linux distribution with full support for the Indonesian language. The latest version, 4.0 "Meuligoe", is based on the recently released Ubuntu 8.10, with Linux kernel 2.6.27 and GNOME desktop 2.24. Some of the features incorporated in the release include: popular GNOME applications, such as The GIMP, Inkscape and GnuCash are included in the default install; out-of-the-box support for MP3 and other widely-used media codecs, as well as encrypted DVDs; custom theme and artwork. The release is available in three formats: as an installable live CD, as an installation CD, and as a minimal live CD (with AbiWord and Gnumeric replacing OpenOffice.org and Epiphany replacing Firefox).
