INDIANAPOLIS, IN – OsteoSymbionics, a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, patient-specific craniofacial implants has announced the first implantations of the ST Temporalis™ in the Indianapolis area. The initial procedure was done in December 2011, and Dr. Eppley has performed three more procedures using the ST Temporalis™ since then.

The flexible soft tissue facial implant is designed to correct temporal hollowing, a condition that can occur naturally, but is also a common side effect for certain brain and cranial trauma surgeries that leave permanent facial atrophy at the temple. The condition alters the appearance of the patient, which can lead to severe psychological distress and often depression. The silicone implant is safe, easy-to-use and can be implanted during the initial craniofacial surgery or later for patients who have lived with temporal hollowing since their original surgery.

“Temporal hollowing is a condition where patient concern is growing. Whether it occurs naturally or is caused by some injury or disease, temporal hollowing often results in an appearance that patients are displeased with and can have lasting emotional effects,” Dr. Eppley said. “The ST Temporalis™ is a significant answer for patients who are concerned with temporal hollowing, as it represents a safe and permanent way to fill temporal indentation and provide a smoother look.”

The assassination attempt of U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords brought temporal hollowing to the attention of the U.S. public. While Congresswoman Giffords is still being treated, a significant hollowing of her left temple was present following the surgical reconstruction of her head and face.

Temple defects such as temporal hollowing can be genetic or result from neurological surgery procedures to treat aneurysms, trauma and other brain complications. The ST Temporalis™ provides for better cosmetic outcomes as it is distinctively flexible and is easily trimmed with surgical scissors for a custom fit. By minimizing facial deformity in the temple, the surgeon helps to restore the patient's quality of life.

Approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), ST Temporalis™ is available in two sizes. It is easily trimmed in the operating room as needed, bends for easier insertion, and offers easy fixation with a suture or screw.

For more information about the ST Temporalis™ soft tissue facial implant, call OsteoSymbionics at 877.881.6899.

OsteoSymbionics now offers ST Temporalis™, a flexible soft tissue facial implant that corrects temporal hollowing. By minimizing facial deformity in the temple, the surgeon makes an additional step toward restoring the patient's quality of life. Temple defects often result from neurological surgery procedures to treat aneurysms, trauma and other brain complications.

Approved this week by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), ST Temporalis™ is available in two sizes. It is easily trimmed in the operating room as needed, bends for easier insertion, and fixation is with standard suture.

"Its unique shape, flexibility and well-established tolerance…is a welcome addition to the expanding number of available cranial and facial implants," said Indianapolis cosmetic surgeon Barry L. Eppley, M.D., D.M.D.

To order an ST Temporalis™ soft tissue facial implant, call OsteoSymbionics at 877.881.6899 to arrange direct shipping or connect with a regional distributor.
