Google Websites Get Their Own Official URL Shortcut: g.co

URL shortening is defined as conversion of a long URL name into a short one. A website i.e., URL shortner creates a short Uniform Resource Locator (URL) from a long one so that the short version, which is easier to remember and share. Examples of URL shortening websites:

Google announced the launch of a new URL-Shortener i.e “ g.co”

Google joins Internet biggies like Twitter currently has “t.co”, Overstock has “o.co” and Amazon has “a.co”, “ z.co” and “k.co” .Google is simplifying access to its growing collection of products and services with the acquisition of the URL shortcut “g.co.” Back in December 2009, Google launched its public URL shortener, goo.gl for public use.But as rightly said that in the world of URLs , bigger is not better.

The domain g.Co will be used for official Google use that is for use with Google products such as GMail, Documents, and Photos.The usage of domain is thatit will be used to create a shortcut for all its products and services using the format g.co/[xyzproduct/service] The company has confirmed the new shortcut domain but did not reveal the cost to acquire it, which is estimated to be at least $1.5 million.

However, g.co is quite different as it will only be linked to official Google-branded online portals. Even if you can’t tell which website you’re being redirected to, the link will only lead to sites owned by Google. Thus, it sort of legitimizes the link and makes it more trustworthy to the end user. Additionally, it just streamlines access to Google sites in general, especially when users want to share something quickly on social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook and, of course, Google Plus. Having a shorter URL also makes it easier and cheaper when using URL addresses in advertisements.

The goo.gl shortcut that the company acquired back in 2009, will not be discarded. It will continue to be available to the public for use to shorten URLs across the web. The G.Co shortcuts, however, can only be created by Google themselves and will only point to products owned by Google.

Saturday, July 16, 2011: Users are advised to download VLC player directly from the official website. According to some reports, few fraud companies are abusing the source code of VLC player and distributing the software infected with malware.

VLC Player by VideoLAN is no doubt one of the best and most popular media player available on Windows, Mac and Linux systems. Being open source software, the source code of VLC player is available to everyone.

These fraud companies tweak the source code and inject their own malware in the player and then make it available for download through various sources. User thinks that it’s the legit version of the software. However, they receive the infected version which either does not work or spreads malware on their computer system.

What’s causing more trouble is that these fraud companies have enough money to have Google Adwords accounts so that they can buy advertisements on the Internet and expand their reach. Many such companies have even registered ‘official sounding’ domains which trick users to believe that they’re actually downloading from the official website.

Ludovic Fauvet, the developer of VLC player, says that his organisation, being a non-profit, does not have enough money to sue these companies which are discrediting his work and also abusing the GPL licence.

It’s being highly recommended that users looking to download VLC player should download it only from the official website to be 100 per cent sure that they’ve downloaded the authentic version of the software that just works fine and does not contain any malware.

Microsoft drops the Conditional Comments in IE10

Microsoft added many features to ‘Internet Explorer’ over years. The team intends to remove several of the less-successful legacy features in IE10. The conditional comments used in IE6,7,8 and 9 are now going to disappear in IE10.Ensuring you website or application works in all browsers is tough. It’s made particularly difficult when you have to support older editions of Internet Explorer. It’s unreasonable to expect a 10 year old browser to render the same as Firefox 5 or Chrome 12.
During the development of IE6 :

The bugs are well-documented and its possible to overcome the majority of issues
Microsoft provide ‘Conditional Comments’ so that developers can add custom CSS and script fixes which target a specific version of IE.

What are Conditional Comments actually???
Examine the source of almost any HTML5 page and you will find this code in the head:

It loads a shim in IE8 and below which allows the developer to style new HTML5 elements . It’s not required in IE9 and other browsers with native HTML5 support — they ignore the script.
Conditional Comments are incredibly useful but, they are rarely necessary. Moreover, They are little like browser sniffing.
What is the need to remove Conditional Comments???
IE8 is normally well-behaved. The requirement is of only the HTML5 shim . With a few CSS3 exceptions, IE9 renders as well as any other browser. Hopefully, IE10 will catch-up — or even can overtake — Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari.
Conditional Comments are not required. There’s no need for “[if IE 10]“ because pages will be displayed (mostly) the same in all modern browsers. Moreover, Conditional Comments will not disappear from IE6, 7, 8 and 9. However, its removal will horrify some developers because the use of conditional comments had made work somewhat easy for them. Now let’s wait for the next IE10 without Conditional Comments.

jQuery 1.6.1 has .attr() backward compatibility

jQuery is a JavaScript library whose purpose is to simply the client-side scripting of HTML.It simplifies document traversing, event handling, animating, and Ajax interactions that contribute to rapid web development. The recent release of jQuery Version 1.6.1 has come up with .attr() backward compatibility. However the Previous release of jQuery 1.6 was controversial with respect to the handling of the attributes and DOM object properties. There were indifferent reactions towards the changes in the .attr() method in jQuery 1.6. The Boolean logic flaws resulting from the change were hard to debug. The change could have stopped people from updating the version to jQuery 1.6 because it could have resulted in breaks in the script .Consider an example:

In version prior to jQuery 1.6, $(“#chk1″).attr(“checked”) would return boolean value true. However, in version 1.6, there was a change in the way the attr() method responds. And the same code would return an empty string in jQuery 1.6. The reason being the change in approach due to introduction of .prop().This change caused a confusion and had to be rolled back in jQuery 1.6.1.

Consider the following code:

Thus in jQuery 1.6.1 .attr() method reverts to its original functionality and the above code will evaluate to true.

What’s new in this Version?

The old .attr() method had many bugs and was hard to maintain. jQuery 1.6.1 comes with several bug fixes as well as an update to the Attributes module.

Specifically, boolean attributes such as checked, selected, readonly, and disabled in 1.6.1 will be treated just as they used to be treated in jQuery versions prior to 1.6. This means that code such as

Gmail's New Features: A First Glance

The launch of social networking service Google + has proved to be a hallmark in giving interesting features to Gmail .

Features at a glance:

1. Multiple calls from Gmail – Google has recently added this feature of making and handling multiple calls in Gmail. We are aware about the communication abilities i.e., voice, video calls to other computers and call phones and till now we were limited to making one call at a time but now the new Gmail lets us make multiple calls at the same time . The working is that if you are in a call and you make another call then your first call will be put on hold while you talk on another call and you can switch between the calls by pressing the Resume button on the call we want to talk on and thus the previous call is automatically put on hold.

2. Choose an inbox style – There is the feature in Gmail with which we can select our favorite inbox style that suits our needs. We have already noticed the styles like starred first, unread first and Priority inbox and after addition we have these styles:

a) Classic- This is the default inbox style and in this the messages are ordered chronologically i.e. the most recent e-mail on the top.

b) Priority Inbox- In Gmail , significant and unread messages appear on the top, then starred and so on. Thus we can create our own inbox style

c) Important first – With this style the important mail is put at the top including both read and unread messages. Thus this style separates the important messages from other ones.

d) Unread first – With this style the unread messages are out at the top.

e) Starred first- In this the starred messages are at the top.

3. View Zip and RAR contents without downloading – Earlier in Gmail when someone used to send ZIP or RAR file format as an e-mail then we need to extract it to view the file but now this exciting feature has made it simpler. With this feature whenever we receive an e-mail that has ZIP or RAR as an attachment then we can directly view the contents of ZIP or RAR file using Google Docs viewer in the browser.A click on ZIP or RAR file in Gmail will open Google Docs view that will show all the files in archive

4. More Info about the sender – With the series of improvements to Gmail. Google has added this detailed sender information feature. If we get a message from someone who is not in our Gmail contacts then Google will now show the sender’s email address in the header. It also give the information if we get the message from a mail sending service. The idea behind this is to reduce the phishing attempts.

5. Keyboard shortcuts fro Spreadsheet - These keyboard shortcuts increase the efficiency of work by helping in saving the time by allowing you not to take your hands off the keyboard to use the mouse. The new keyboard shortcut key is available from within a Google Doc spreadsheet and it can be viewed by pressing Ctrl+/ or Cmd+/.

Microsoft unveils a prototype kit gadgets

Microsoft has opened the doors for electronic enthusiasts.The team "Sensors and Devices," Microsoft Research unveiled a new project called ".NET Gadgeteer" and Framwork which allows hackers and electronics enthusiasts to quickly build customized gadgets and code in their firmware DotNET, Visual Studio or Visual C # Express.

Similar to the Arduino project, it is a microframework. NET controlling various devices in the center of kits which is a mini motherboard with an embedded processor and a variety of connectors which can be connected with other .NET Gadgeteer modules.

The first kit is compatible with the. NET is signed MicroFramwork GHI Electronics, includes a touch screen, a mini-camera, the buttons and LEDs and interfaces for USB and SD card. The whole can be placed like an electronic Lego and thus without the need for soldering.

Regarding the software, Microsoft maintains, in addition to the framework, a site which will allow sharing open source codes written in C #, specifically to control each module for different uses. Developers can obviously write their own programs and share if they wish with the community.
"It started out as an internal tool at Microsoft Research Cambridge, but its appeal to people outside the lab quickly became evident," says Steve Hodges, principal hardware engineer at Microsoft Research Cambridge. "The open source release will make this powerful technology available to others, including the hobbyists, teachers, researchers and developers who have given us such positive feedback to date," he says.

Microsoft also claims the opening of this project and says that any manufacturer can design hardware modules that run on it. Thus Microsoft is also working on ways to turn your loose collection of circuit boards into a more serious construction, such as building a case to house your electronics using a 3D printer.

Blogger's New Interface

As Google promised that we are going to see many new and cleaner changes in Google’s Products after the announcement of Gmail new Sign-In page.

So on 31, August, Google officially announced the new interface for the blogger. The interface was in limited tests in April. Now the testing phase if over and the new interface is launched.

"Over the last couple of months, we've made significant improvements to our new user interface. First and foremost, we've incorporated your feedback and made numerous fixes based on that feedback. Also, we've updated the look and feel of our new design, inspired by Google's newest design evolutions," explains Google. The new interface is quite cleaner and refreshing due to its efficiency and Google+ like feel.

The overview page of the blogger offers shows how people are reacting to their blog, with the graph
showing recent traffic numbers, comment activity and follower counts.

The new interface shows the total number of published comments and the total number of page-views at the right-side of the post and the labels have been shifted from the bottom of the page to the right of the page. Tabs have been replaced by a vertical menu. The post editor is much better, especially if you use the default view. There's a lot of white space in the new interface to properly embed videos and photos in the blog posts, but the buttons aren't big enough to be readable.

Blogger uses Ajax, so all the pages load a lot faster, including the post editor. Unfortunately, Blogger is still very slow when you perform a search and try to display posts or comments.

From accessibility point-of –view, whether you’re on a dashboard or settings page at blogger.com, you can create or edit posts with a single click at the top of the screen.

Anytime if you don’t like (like to use it now) the new interface, you can easily roll back to the previous interface by the link at the top of the page.

“We’ve rewritten the entire editing and management experience from scratch so it’s faster and more efficient for you — and easier for us to update and improve over time,” Blogger Product Manager Chang Kim explains.

“We’re working hard to fundamentally revamp and improve the Blogger experience from the ground up, and we hope you enjoy the first in a series of major updates that are on their way in the coming months,” Kim says.

Just noticed "Coming soon: A new sign-in page" written on Gmail's Sign Page.

Google has decided to change its sign page to a new and improved sign page. Lets have a closer look at the old and new pages.

We know Gmail's Sign-in page is very much secure (you can see the lock icon (favicon) in the address bar), then why Google needs to have a new sign page ??
As these days small screen resolutions such as smartphones or netbooks, and touch based devices are getting popular at a very rapid rate so this could be a part of optimizing Google products.
This design is just the design which is used by Google+ .
Though the new design looks similar to the previous one, yet there are some chances in the position of some elements for example : Sign Up link has been shifted to the top of the page, On the new sign-in page, the input boxes are bigger (It can show 31 characters in the username field whereas the old sign in page displays only 20 characters in the username field) and footer links which were placed just below the content of the page in old page are now at bottom of the page.
If you love Google's current page then you can all the way switch back to the old page.
Google doesn't introduce new functionality to the new page just the layout has been changed.
If you use your bookmark link for opening your Gmail account then don't worry the same link will work for the new page too, but after a period this new page permanent and you cannot be able to get back the old sign in page.
the users may see the old page again sometimes, this happens due to change in the user's IP address or due to switching the browser.
In near future we are surely going to see a lot new in Google's product page to offer us great user experience.

OSUM Member Selection Drive

Hello everyone,

In this post I am gonna write about the event which was held on 6th of October 2010 for the recruitment of the OSUM members from CSE-1st yr., IT-1st yr and IT-2nd yr. The basic aim of the event was to shortlist the students for the interview and Group Discussion procedure for the selection of the OSUM members.The agenda of the event included was first of all a briefing about open source and awaring the students that exactly what open source is, the difference between open source, freeware and paid softwares and the terms of licences of all these.The benefits of open source and their compatibility. And then some open source alternatives of paid or freewares.

The session was made quite interactive and In this session, those softwares were discussed which we often use in our routine and the way was aimed to generate interest among the students about the open softwares.Various statistics were covered in the talk of the paid softwares whose better alternatives were discussed and nevertheless they all are free of cost(Open Source). Third the students were advised to get registered on the official website of Sun’s OSUM group and the join the group of our college to be updated and also were advised to join the forums available on the website to solve their queries.They were provided the download link to download the magazine ”AMMO” last but not the least, For which the event was held on, there was quiz on the basis of Open Source,personality and Basic Apptitude.

Just taken the exams..Wanna read something interesting, any e-book on C/C++ or something... But I am very tired at the same time to read the book..but I want utilize the time..how great it would be if someone reads the book for me..So I searched for it and got to know about the facility to listen the e-book.Adobe reader provides us the required feature..

I have used Adobe Reader 9.0 for this and it is a very useful thing according to me or I can say for all of us who want to study but don't want to read the book.(e-book)

Just go to Veiw --> Read Out Loud --> Activate the Read Out Loud option and use the select the activate

Here are some shortcuts for the using this feature.

Launch Of AMMO 1.2

OSUM Student Club, DAVIET launches its second E-Magazine,
AMMO 1.2. Its time to showcase your AMMO.
The Engineers day, 15th September, 2010, marked the day of Abhiyantriks…at ABHIYANTA(a one day technical event).
The OSUM event was held with full vigour and there gathered a handsome audience to attend the same.It included the detailing of OSUM, focussing particularly the freshers and the second year students, so that they can be aware of the word OSUM.Then, came the launch of AMMO 1.2, which included numerous articles (copy has been attached herewith).The event also included a short Goodies round, in which the audience took part actively and won goodies.On the whole, the event was a grand success.

The staff from IT department was also present at the moment who commended the work of OSUM team.The next activity will be soon coming to freak you out, so get updated yourself timely.

OSUM (Open Source University Meet-Up): Open Source University Meetup is a student developer organization sponsored by Sun Microsystems that educates its members about open-source technologies through technical demonstrations, access to web courses, and discounts on Sun Certification.
How it started ??
Sun started the Open Source University Meet-Up as part of its program to help connect students in computer science to its technologies. Typically lead by a campus ambassador or on-campus volunteer, Open Source University Meet-Ups exist in many countries.

What is the Purpose of this ??
The Open Source University Meet-Up is a place for Sun to connect student developers to Sun’s wide array of open source software platforms, following Sun’s initiatives to open-source all of its software technologies. As a whole it also helps give software developers, students, and other interested people an opportunity to learn more about open source software.

How we do this ??
Through its on-campus activities, Sun sponsored OSUMs (Club Members) will receive access to technical information that can be shared with OSUM members via technical demonstrations. Additionally, online web courses, through the Sun Academic Initiative program will be available to the OSUM to provide an opportunity to get its members Sun Certified.
Sun will provide a social networking web site for all registered OSUMs. This online presence will enable the OSUM community to connect with other student developers worldwide. OSUMs can collaborate online in forums and community groups with other student developers who share their technical interests.
Overall, the OSUM is a one-stop community that will expand the educational training and social interaction of the up-and-coming tech-savvy student preparing to enter the global workforce.
