My Current Experience as a Pro Photographer

Well, I have been working for the last few months as a professional photographer. It has been an interesting ride and I want to share some of the trues that people don't know about. Warning: These are my own personal experiences and it might be different for others.

Being a photographer is not for everyone, if you enjoy it as a hobby, that's great. However, if you're thinking about doing it as a profession, ask yourself this question "Do I really have the passion to do this everyday of my life?". From the moment I wake up, to the moment I go to bed, all I think about is photography. I know I sound like a jerk questioning someones passion, but it's the harsh truth.

When being a professional, you have pretty much two options for work; freelancing on your own or work for someone else. If you're going the route of freelancing, it is going to be tough out there competing with people trying to offer the lowest price for a job. Also, establishing a business on your own will be difficult if you have zero financial backing. My advise is to take accounting and business classes. Ejen Chuang, the author of Cosplay in America photography book gave me this advice when I decided to go on this route. I'm glad that I listened to him because photography is not just taking pretty pictures but it is also a business. Hell, I'm going back to college part time to get a degree in accounting and business administration just to have something to fall back on.

Now working for a company is something completely different. It can be good and bad at the same time. The good thing is, you will have a steady paycheck and have the chance to learn from other people. The bad is, any single picture you take during a job, the company will have the copyright, you will be working crazy hours, and you cannot pick your customers. I must have taken over 50,000 pictures at my old job and I do not have ownership of a single one. My work hours were crazy, there were days that I had off and they called me into work. The extra cash was great but working 9 to 15 days in a row and not having any free time was effecting my health. The worst part out of working for someone else is one's job security. As of this post, I'm out of a job because the owner just closed the studio with no warning. It sucks because 15 people including myself woke up to find they lost their job due to an irresponsible douche bag.

For those who are wondering if some of this stuff has turned me away for photography, it hasn't. To be honest, it did the complete opposite and it has fueled my drive to continue it as a career and to achieve my dream to become a photographer for National Geographic. This has been my current experience as a professional photographer, if you have any questions, just ask in a comment below.

My New DSLR Camera

More than a year and half ago, I started saving for a new DSLR camera. It was a long and grueling task that seemed impossible but doing a little saving here and there, I made it. I finally had the money to buy a new Canon T3/1100D, then the holiday season came and it was sold out every where and if they had it in stock, they would raise the price. I waited once more and when the moment seemed right, I order it. Now I have in my hand, the new DSLR camera that I've desired for so long.

Wall-E was pretty impressed by it.

The Canon T3 is a pretty good camera if you're on a budget. The one complaint I have about it feels fragile because of the plastic body. I'm pretty use to using at work a both the Canon 60D and Canon 1Ds-Mark III, but I can say that this Camera is great.

As for the kit lens, it is neither good or bad, just okay at best. I do not like that all plastic and to be honest, I'll never use it again after I build up a decent collection of lenses.

Battery that runs on happiness and unicorn blood.

Tons of useless cables, CDs, and papers that I'll never touch.

Here is a test shot. The detail seen on Wall-E is great.

Players step into the shoes of Junichiro Honda, who wakes up one day to find that the world has been transformed by aliens into a bishoujo paradise where cuteness is the ultimate authority. His childhood friend Yukino Ohama has become President of the United States of Nippon, and whatever she says goes! Junichiro has to find a way to set the world right before the madness goes too far.

Where have I been?

Holy crap, it has been weeks that I've had the chance to write an actual blog post that it not involving the new figure preorders, picture galleries, and O-Talk. I have been working so damn hard as a photographer in the last month that blogging and other things have taken the backseat.

For the past few months, I have been working on a post documenting my personal experience as a professional photographer. Every single time that I complete it, something new happens and I have to start from scratch. I hope to complete that post soon because I would like to share it with all my readers.

I know it has been a month with no new O-Talk and that's because of two reasons, we wanted a short break and the new site that is hosting O-Talk. Everyone that is on O-Talk has their own life and is not able to be participating in almost every episode. Just so we wont burn out, we took a short break. During that break, O-Talk has changed new podcast hosts. We originally hosted the show on Blip TV but they decided to drop their audio format, so I had to look somewhere else. I found liberated syndication and started to use them as the new host. Personally, I enjoy their services but it sucks that I have to pay a month fee. One more thing, I have been thinking of dedicating a website to O-Talk.

For a long time, I have been slowly saving for a new DSLR and that has not been a success. It is normally due to bills and nice expensive things that cost quite a bit. I have been putting it off to get it later but my current camera has been failing lately. I pretty much have no choice but to buy one as soon as possible as an investment. I also would like to start working on a few personally photography projects that I have thought about many years ago.

Hopefully, my daily schedule goes back to normal soon so I can get back to blogging on a regular basis.

Holy crap, this is one big batch of new figures. I'm a bit interested in the Erio figure but the cheeks put me off, I'm hoping that Good Smile or Alter release a version of her. The two other figures that I'm interested in are Menma and Totori. Kotobukiya perfectly captured Menma's charm in that figure. As for Totori, the figure looks well done and the attention to detail is jaw-dropping amazing. It is also nice to see Wave releasing a figure that is not from their beach queen line, I'm personally tired of seeing that. So, what are you interest in preordering from this new batch of figures?
