SUDEKI FOR STEAM

I just started Sudeki on steam and game is a lot better than I thought it would be. I had Never played it when it was first released. However, I like the creative and imaginative feel to the world. Reminds me a lot of Grandia II. I appreciate how older games like this weren't afraid to have fantasy worlds that were...fantastical like a fairy tale and not just medieval carbon copies of each other. Of course the game so far isn't without it's cons. The voice acting is both corny, poorly written, and acted. The character designs are an obvious homage to anime Style JRPGs, though not adequately done, does give me a wave of nostalgia. The color pallet used for the graphics is probably my favorite thing so far as it has that look that a lot of Xbox games have at the time. The environments are similar to that of Psychonauts. If there is one modern game I could compare it to it would be Magna Carta II. Which isn't a bad thing whatsoever. There are some screen shots below to see the beauty of this game. We will see if I continue to like it as I play further. So far isn't doesn't seem to be as bad as some reviews say.

Xenoblade Chronicles For The "NEW" 3DS.

Holy Crap!!! Xenoblade on the go! The only downfall to this is that you have to buy a NEW 3DS just to buy it....they kinda run by that fact quickly. When he says NEW Nintendo 3DS....he means NEW. As in it is basically a whole new system running on a new processor. It will be able to play all older 3DS gams...but your older 3DS wont play the NEW 3DS games...But for Xenoblade, is it worth it?

Good evening everyone. I'm writing this late at night for no particular reason aside from that I was late writing it yesterday. Anyways here is my preview of Fairy Fencer F

Fairy Fencer F

Compile Heart, everyone's favorite game industry parodying lolicon pandering company, is developing a new game called Fairy Fencer F. I'm sure you all remember the games that they are famous for....you know Hyperdimension Neptunia......Sure, not the best series to establish your reputation with, but it seems that this time around Compile Heart is planning on making something a bit more serious...and don't try and tell me that their Agarest War series WAS serious! Fairy Fencer F seems to have some potential judging by the screen shots.

Here is the premise of the story from the website.

戦いは拮抗していたが、両者ともに自身の力と妖聖を憑依させた特殊な武器を大量に撃ち合い、
その力によってお互いを封印し、どこかここではない世界へと消え去った。
それから時は流れ、現代。
女神と邪神が遺した武器は『フューリー』と、それを扱う戦士は『フェンサー』と呼ばれていた。
フューリーはその強大な力ゆえ、集めると願いがかなうと噂されていたため、フェンサーはフューリーの奪い合いを常としていた。
ひょんなことからフェンサーになったばかりの青年ファングは襲われていた少女、ティアラを助ける。
彼女もまた、フェンサーであった。

この出会いにより、ファングは邪神と女神をめぐる戦いに巻き込まれていくことになる―

Rough Translation:
The Battle / War was close with both sides (fighters) each exchanging blows from their own abilities and (Special) weapons imbued with Fairy (Faery) Powers. With that power each was sealed away, banished to place not of this world (actually a world that is not here).
Then with the flow of time (Time passed), This Century
The Goddess and the Evil God (possibly the ones who were mentioned to be fighting) left behind a weapon called "Fury", with the warrior who uses (deals with) such a weapon being called a "Fencer". Because of the enormous power of the "Fury" (weapons) there is a rumor that if one was to gather (these weapons) their wishes would be granted, so these "Fencers" have begun the endless scramble for these weapons.
In a strange turn of events (Strange event) the young man Fang, a newbie Fencer, saves a young girl, Tiara, from an attack.
The girl too is a Fencer.

Due to this meeting, Fang becomes involved with the constant battle between the Evil God and the Goddess.

While the story doesn't sound too extraordinary, according to the website, the main character Fang has a foul mouth, and will "determine his own fate", which is decisively a bold way to describe him and set him apart. Because of this he seems a bit less on the witless bishonen type and more of the strong headed fighter type. This type of protagonist, in my opinion, is usually great for the story, as a tougher character typically has less psychological baggage to get over before the plot can advance.

Fang

Tiara on the other hand does seem to be made to fulfill typical fetishes. She wears Gothic Lolita clothing, and is said to be "so serious at times that is borderline masochistic" (I'm paraphrasing). She fights for the sake of reviving the goddess, and when Fang speaks ill of her (Tiara? and her lover of the goddess, guessing from context) her disposition changes. She is said to be rather scary when angry.

As always with "certain" JRPGs the cute "moe" style girls get more attention than the guys. Which more often than not paints the wrong picture and misrepresents the game and it's story. By all accounts the main character is said to be Fang, yet they mostly have screen shots of Tiara.

Here is a picture of Tiara and Alyn ( another character I didn't cover out of pure laziness) in an alluring and rather well done action promo-shot.

Lastly there is this strange amalgamation of swords which I can only assume is the "Fury" weapons that the so called "Fencers" are to gather in order to be granted their wishes.

All in all, the premise is a road that we have all been down before. But for another niche' JRPG for the PS3 it seems to have promise. As always, near the end of a consoles life is when companies really seem to get the hang of creating games for said console. This just means for JRPGs, the PS3 isn't dead yet. In actuality its JRPG library may have just started.

My conclusion
The bottom of the site brags about the awesome people that this development team consists of. While having the Neptunia Team listed is a negative point in my eyes, the fact that they have Yoshitaka Amano listed as the concept artist is really something that grabs by attention. We will have to wait and see if there will be any actual footage of gameplay released soon. That will be the true test.

Hey guys. I decided I would start off my return to the blog world with another Eye On Japan article. Mostly covering gaming / anime news but interesting cultural evens pop in form time to time also.

Drag-on Dragoon 3 (Drakengard 3)

Square-Enix just announced the development of a new Drag-on-Dragoon game. Most of you probably have forgotten about this series. The first two games were basically Dynasty Warriors with a Dark Fantasy vibe and a "mature" story line. They were developed by a Square-Enix subsidiary called Cavia. This company also created one of my favorite games, Nier. After having created Nier they were absorbed into the main branch of Square-Enix and nothing has been heard of them since. This new game is being developed by a company called Access Games...whose history of development worries me a bit.On the bright side Yoko Taro is still the director as he was on the past few titles. Lets hope this means at least the story will be of quality.

Final Fantasy VIII International Version (PC)

Is this coming to the west? I haven't a clue. Is it suppose to be in HD?....yeah we will see. Apparently this has been confirmed to be the next PC release by Square. I have to admit I wouldn't mind seeing this game again in a smoothed HD Unlike FFVII, VIII isn't too old for it to be beyond saving. Fully body polygonal characters could easily be updated. Hey Square how about a PS3 version?!

Gackt + Rape

The musician / Actor / creative designer / whatever, Gackt is suing a tabloid magazine called Flash in Japan
, as the article had an “interview” with a lady who “confessed” claiming that she had an encounter with Gackt where he had raped her for six hours straight. Gackt of course is suing the magazine and publisher due to their attempts to defame him.

I'm Back!

Greetings everyone! I'm back. I have been on hiatus for a while as I ran a few other projects. All of which crashed and burned. We will never speak of them again. However, I am back. Bringing my strange sense of humor and terrible Japanese to make at least weekly posts. I am still wanting to run a gaming news / article site but I have yet to obtain the help from writers. Until then I'm going to try to be creative in any way I possibly can. Create an Indie JRPG (maybe get it going on kickstarter), draw, and translated somethings. For better or for worse I'm back guys! I was getting kind of depressed as my current job isn't so great and my projects sort of crumbled beneath me. However, the best way to get out of depression is to get back into the game. So that is what I'm doing.

Persona 2 Batsu Promotional Video

Here is the new promotional video for Personal 2 Batsu. Not as flashy as the opening for the first Persona 2 on PSP but this one carries a much darker ascetic. Story is sort of a retake on the first part, as if it didn't happen. The outcomes and a few characters in Batsu are different. I'm looking forward to it as always.

I find it interesting that they flash the P2 before they show the Persona title. I suppose this is because the third and fourth games are more well known as P3 and P4 respectively.

The problem with this game = Lame Western Developer no one knows, who haven't done anything good and are cheaper than Konami doing themselves.
I hope Konami losses money on this. I wish both them and Capcom would pull their heads out of their asses and realize that its okay to spend a buck or two and wait a few years to release something of quality in house, than sell out for cheap having a westerner companies makes something because they figure that is what westerners want. That even shows in the style of horror. Most western made horror movies cease to scare me anymore because they all rely on the same uncreative zombies and cheap camera effects. I hope the low sales of this game teach them a lesson.

Western & Japanese RPGs

Wow this series started off with a bang, I thought they were going to play it equal and show some real truth. But slowly it started to add in concepts that I don't follow. Starting with Abnegation. I don't know the last time I played an RPG, Western or Japanese, when I wanted to turn my brain off. Sure, I play these games to release stress, but if I'm so stressed after work that I need to turn my brain off. The last thing I want to do is play a game and screw up on a boss / dungeon ect because my brain is off. Second there is the "Menus based combat" argument. Sure in the 80s and early 90s it might not have been as engaging as action or shooting games, but it gave a lot more options to your combat than those games had. Also now it boils down to more strategy. I don't want to say that JRPG gamers (or RPG gamers in general) are more intelligent than other gamers. But it does take quit a bit more thought and time to decide what you want to do within a menus as you plan your moves/equip items/ ect than it does to mash buttons (no offense to the tales games). Though I agree that many JRPGs have fallen short because they are aiming (IMO) Moe crap or overly cinematic stories with no actual substance or deep and provocative story telling. But when they claim that "DQIX" and Dark Souls are games that should be "given money" for I cringe. Those games are more Western based in much of their execution than other games. Their stories are almost non-existent, which is the opposite of why I play many JRPGs, and the opposite of why this show says JRPG were superiors. Aren't there plenty of games (many of them overlooked) that have great stories that weren't mentioned and aren't "WRPG" styled/inspired? Games that come to mind are Radiant Historia, Nier, Shin Megami strange Journey, Resonance of Fate, ect. These are "newer" JRPGs that have a solid and deep story, why not give them some money? Long story short, this started off awesome but ended up missing the mark completely. At least in my opinion.

Dragon Age Anime?

It seems that EA and Bioware has a Dragon Age anime in the works. Though it is obviously not a traditional anime but a CGI one using the animation style and art influence of the recent Appleseed movies. Doesn't look too bad. Some of the animation and art looks different. The design doesn't really feel "Dragon Age" to me. But it looks to be a decent movie for a pretty decent game series.

As of late is appears that there is quite a few new JRPGs coming out from Japan. Could this possibly be the start of a revival? One can only hope. Here are a few of the games coming out that have caught my eye.

俺に働けって言われても (Even if You Tell Me To Work)

Famitsu recently has reported on a new game that is to star a Hikkkomori (Shut in) Seinen (College age male) and is being developed by E-Smile for the PSP and Playstation network.

The game seems like Etrian Odyssey for the PSP in a modern setting but I could be wrong.

After that we have Imeepoch's Sol Trigger.

This game looks amazing to me. The setting, the story, all of it. I can't really explain it but to say they are claiming it is the last rpg for the PSP. If so, the PSP is going out with a Bang!

最近、スクエニによってもう直ぐブレブリーデフォルトのデモが出る。　ファミ通の記事がブレブリーはFFっぽい雰囲気があると書きました。　若しこのゲームは神ゲーになったら俺は３DSを買うべき人になる。。。糞！そんなにお金持ってない！

Recently　Square Enix's　stated that a demo for Bravely Default will become available. According to an article in Famitsu magazine the game has a very distinct FF feeling to it. If this games ends up being a really amazing game I'm going have to end up purchasing a 3DS. Dammit! I don't have that kind of money!

Current Thought On FFXIII-2 and Jak and Daxter HD Collection

      I would like to state that FFXIII-2 is a great game! Furthermore I would say it is an actually Final Fantasy (as in deserving of the name). Recently I encountered someone on a board, which I frequent, stating that FFXIII-2 is a better game than 7/8/9/ because it is newer. That all of us who love those older titles and think better of them, do so out of nostalgia only. I too have gone back and played FFVII, and I will state that FFVII is the superior game. While I love the excitement of the new game feeling. Definitely when it turns out to be a solid RPG for me to explore and become involved with. I think FFVII is superior due to the story not being philosophical touchy feely psycho babble with know real point. I like FFXIII and XIII-2 story. Just don't feel that they are as cut throat and down to earth as FFVII. Nothing FF has done since VII has given me that feeling that I got during the first part of the first disc of VII. Being in a giant city of midgar with the expansiveness of it all and the conspiracies. Maybe it was a 90s thing. It just feels so right. Plus the music. Better "battle/gameplay" doesn't make an RPG 100% complete. FFXIII-2 is a step back into the right direction for Square. But I'm hoping Versus brings us home.

    That being said I am thoroughly enjoying FFXIII-2. However, I do find myself being lost from time to time. I am using the guide to go through and 100% everything. With so many paths to choose in so many different orders I can't help but feel over whelmed. Though this frustrates me to no end, I feel that this is a good thing. The world of FFXIII-2 has enough substance and exploration to warrant a feeling of being overwhelmed. When compared to the past installment of the FF series with is a good thing. I'll give me full review later on when I have completed the game. When I don't have many other games vying for my attention.

     On of those games that I find myself preoccupied with is Jak and Daxter HD Collection. Holy crap! If this isn't the definition of awesome I don't know what is! I guess I have a problem. While I can't stand Hollywood putting remakes and 3-D updates of movies out, I love the game industry for bringing things like Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear and Devil May Cry back to the plate. Not only were these games instant classics when they were released they truly stand the test of time. Just a bit of a tweak here and there and you have something that looks and feels modern yet has that classic attention to detail. Maybe if these remakes sell good enough it will inspire these companies to focus on the series again. Either way Jak and Daxter is a good place to start.

Arriving in the mail from Amazon's release date shipping is my copy of Final Fantasy XIII-2. It should be waiting for me when I get home from work. I can't wait. Lets hope I can review this one and have it score more towards a 90%.

Electric Wave People RPG. （電波人間のRPG) is a game for the 3DS which allows players to use the 3DS camera to see the floating electric wave people in real life and grab them. After they are captured you can train them and take them in a party on quest through RPG dungeons. Looks pretty nifty if you ask me.

Arc the Lad collection Review
This game is one of my all time favorites. So I will do my usual and put cons in with my many pros. However...there are very VERY few cons.
Now remember, I am reviewing all three games at once so I'm doing a broad overview of the whole collection.

Arc the lad I

Graphics 7.5
There were times where the graphics were VERY detailed and the super deformed (chibi) sprites were so well animated you couldn't help but fall in love with them. But after a few repeat animations and a very small over world the game felt a bit...tiny, to say the least, and it didn't age well graphically. However, for being the first RPG on a console to have full CGI cut scenes it gets my Kudos...all the way.

Sound 8.0
Voicing was very nice for such an old title...plus the music was my type of good...something that I could hum hours after playing. It was very memorable but just a lead up to the next games.

Gameplay 7.5
Your cut and paste tactics fare, nothing you wont see in Tenchi Muyo or Treasure hunter G. It would be perfected in games to come. Nuff said.
Story. 9.0
The story in the first game is 100% a teaser. It is a giant back story to lead up to the amazing second game. This game alone isn't too great...but knowing that it leads up to a cliffhanger that begs you to play the next game makes it all worth it. Plus it's VERY short so it's not too hard to get into.

Arc the lad II

Graphics. 8.5
This game was worlds apart from its predecessor. The world was detailed and VERY LARGE with tons of amazing and interesting areas to explore, with a very steam punk feel that paved way for what Final Fantasy VII would be accredited with later. From steam coming out of pipes to awesome towns and magical spells there wasn't anything that didn't look nice about this game. The CGI, however, were much of the same from the first one just better...characters themselves weren't rendered in CGI till the third game.

Sound 8.0
Better than the first game, not as good as the next. The songs were VERY nice and the voicing fit well.

Story. 9.0
So many twists and turns. These characters are the most fleshed out I have ever seen. Some people (including me) got emotional at certain scenes in FF games. This tops those a thousand times over. First of all the characters, except for maybe a few, were lovable. Second, the twists this story took will give people who look deep into it Akira flash backs with a bit of Romeo and Juliet in it. It's purely amazing.

9.0 Overall
I wont go too deep into this one because it doesn't have to be played after the others. However, these games work like Gensou Suikoden. Characters and places from the other games will show up and you'll want their stats and items to transfer. What can I say, this game perfected what the others hadn't. It came after FF7 so it took a lot of reference from it, which was strange because it was what laid the order of what steam punk/scifi jRPG's should be like. So thus the graphics are a bit more 3D that the previous games with more details and camera effects added. The CGI is amazing for its time. Better than FF7 by far and very emotional. The story however is very good..but open. This game plays like a Grand Theft Auto version of the other games. The main story doesn't come till near the end...and every other mission is an optional sand box/choose your own adventure type. It works well but can be overwhelming. The only problem with this game is the main story arc..(arc ...lol). It requires you to know and care about the people in the previous games...if you're just starting it that's a bit of a stretch. However if you proceeded like you were meant to and played the games in order, then this game is a shoe in and needs not introduction or recommendation.

Eye on Japan 25: Good bye Hudson

Many of us gamers, especially the retro kind, have fond memories of the companies that created the games we loved. Sometimes they are almost as dearly to our hearts as the games they created. This make it even harder for us to see them go. It is one thing to say goodbye to the series they worked on, because you know that the company is still there to represent them, but it is another to say goodbye to the company as it feels like the final nail in the coffin. The reasons above are why it is hard for me to write this. The Japanese gaming company known as Hudson Soft, already had most of its shares being owned by Konami Corporation. Now Konami has announced they are going to do a complete take over and absorption of Hudson Soft. Hudson Soft was known for many great game series and a console (Turbo Graphic / PC Engine) that gave Nintendo a run for its money (at least in Japan). Bomerman,Tengai Makyou, Adventure Island, and the Mario Party series, are just a few of the well known titles that Hudson Soft was responsible for. Now Konami, who in my opinion hasn't released anything of true worth in the past few years, might view this as a way to acquire a few more titles in their repertoire, however, it is highly doubtful that these titles will return to how they were in their golden age with Hudson at the helm. If Konami is going to keep all of the employees of Hudson in order to focus on these titles is completely up to Konami now.
Konami can do what they want, but I know that I, as well as many other gamers, will continue to look upon the Hudson Bee with nostalgia and fondness in our hearts. Live long Hudson Bee!

New Years Gaming and Holiday Thanks

Hey guys. It is the New Year. 2012. The year we are all suppose to die. I welcome it. Because in the end I will be playing Games, reading Manga, and watching Anime till we all pass. Though I doubt that will happen unless it is a self fulfilling prophecy. I got a crap ton of games this Holiday Season. My thanks goes to all my family and friends who provided me with an awesome gaming winter. Here is a list of the amazing things I got. With a lull of JRPGs and fighters out there I scored mostly action games and Western games.
1. Batman Arkham City
Amazing game which I beat within three days.
2. Deus Ex
This game has single handedly brought back that city crawling Blade Runner feeling I got from games like FFVII. Thank you Square-enix and Edios. Also thanks to my wife who got me this game.
3. Metal Gear Solid Risk Board game.
I have yet to play this. It is huge with nice detailed figurines of the Geckos and Outerhaven. Once I have the time and the people to play this with I'll probably do a review.
4. Infamous 2
I got the first game as a free download from Sony for the "We are sorry we were hacked thanks for sticking with us" promotion that came with the start of PlayStation Plus. Needless to say I was hooked. This game was one I had my doubts about but after I found out that it wasn't just a mindless city crawler with super hero powers and found out that it had a mature storyline with great gameplay and action, I couldn't put it down. I beat it a few days before I got the second one. So far there are a few big differences, but they feel like changes for the better. I love it.
5. No more Heroes: Heroes Paradise
Hate me as much as you want, I haven't played the original, nor have I had time to start this PS3 remake. I'm dying to, but I must game with the thought of finishing titles.

Wow this game looks amazing........yet again if only I had the time to fit it in.
To round out the rest of the list there was Enslaved (that Ninja Theory retelling of Saiyuki), Mass effect2, Rage, and a few others. As you can tell I am full of new games lately. All of which have to unfortunate go on the back-burner. .
All in all I want to give a shout out to my Family for giving me so many awesome titles to play through.

Eye on Japan 28: Even if you tell me to work I'll still play games!

As of late is appears that there is quite a few new JRPGs coming out from Japan. Could this possibly be the start of a revival? One can only hope. Here are a few of the games coming out that have caught my eye.

俺に働けって言われても (Even if You Tell Me To Work)

Famitsu recently has reported on a new game that is to star a Hikkkomori (Shut in) Seinen (College age male) and is being developed by E-Smile for the PSP and Playstation network.

The game seems like Etrian Odyssey for the PSP in a modern setting but I could be wrong.

After that we have Imeepoch's Sol Trigger.

This game looks amazing to me. The setting, the story, all of it. I can't really explain it but to say they are claiming it is the last rpg for the PSP. If so, the PSP is going out with a Bang!
