This week we are diving into the dark and mysterious world of the 2012 anime, Another. Or, as I like to call it, Final Destination: The Anime.

Another… This is one of those anime that I remember hearing about back in the day, but just never got around to checking out. Honestly? I kind of wish I still hadn't, lol. This anime had so much potential oozing from the premise, but the execution just felt… messy. The story was all over the place, and frankly, it spent way too much time trying to be mysterious just for the sake of it.

So, for those who haven't braved the halls of Yomiyama North Junior High, Another throws us into Class 3-3. We follow Kouichi Sakakibara, a transfer student returning after a month-long sick leave. He's immediately drawn to Mei Misaki, a quiet, enigmatic girl with an eyepatch. The catch? No one else seems to acknowledge her existence. Everyone warns Kouichi to stay away, to not associate with things that "don't exist." Naturally, being the protagonist, he ignores them.

And that's where things start to get… weird. The rumors start swirling, hinting at a curse plaguing Class 3-3. It all revolves around a former student, but nobody wants to spill the full details of the grim event that happened. Kouichi, predictably, becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth and its connection to Mei. Then, the tragedies begin. People start cough dying in increasingly elaborate and unfortunate ways. It's up to Kouichi, Mei, and their increasingly freaked-out classmates to unravel the mystery, but as you can probably guess, the answers come at a hefty price.

My main problem with Another is its pacing and how it handles its central mystery. The first few episodes are great at building atmosphere. The school feels ominous, the classmates are unnervingly secretive, and Mei is genuinely intriguing. You’re left wondering, “What’s going on here? Why is everyone acting so strange?”

But then… it just keeps going. And going. And going.

The mystery gets dragged out way too long, and the explanations, when they finally trickle in, feel convoluted and unsatisfying. Instead of a carefully crafted puzzle, it feels more like the writers were throwing ideas at the wall and seeing what stuck.

And Mei Misaki herself? She starts off as this captivating, almost otherworldly figure. The eyepatch, the quiet demeanor, the fact that nobody acknowledges her – it all adds to her mystique. But the anime never really capitalizes on it. I feel like they wanted to make Mei this iconic, mysterious character, but after a while, they just… stopped trying. She just becomes another student caught up in the chaos. The potential for her character was immense, and it's a shame to see it squandered.

The other characters don't fare much better. Most of them are fairly one-dimensional, serving primarily as either victims or red herrings. There are a few exceptions, but overall, the cast is forgettable.

I will give Another credit where it's due. Episodes 11 and 12 were solid gold. These episodes were the tipping point, the culmination of all the built-up tension. They ditched the slow-burn mystery and went full-blown action-horror. The animation gets a serious boost, the tension is palpable, and the deaths become hilariously over-the-top. The problem is getting to that point was a drag. It feels like wading through molasses to get to the good stuff.

So, can I recommend Another? Honestly, no. If you're looking for a genuinely good horror anime with a compelling mystery and well-developed characters, I suggest you just grab Higurashi: When They Cry. Higurashi does everything that Another tries to do, but it does it better, more consistently, and with far less unnecessary melodrama.

Another just felt like a missed opportunity, a promising premise that never quite lived up to its potential. It’s a case of style over substance, where the mystery is more about teasing than actually delivering a satisfying conclusion. So, unless you're a die-hard horror fan with a lot of patience, I'd say skip this one.

That’s all the time we have for this week’s Otaku Puppy Podcast! Let me know in the comments if you agree with my take on Another, or if you think I’m completely off my rocker. As always, thanks for listening and until next time, stay otaku!

Anime Review! It's your boy, Jrockfreak, back with another anime deep dive. This month, we're tackling a show that promised summer romance, maybe a little sci-fi, and a whole lot of confusion, at least for me; "Waiting in the Summer," from 2012.

So, "Waiting in the Summer," or "Ano Natsu de Matteru," kicks off with our main dude, Kaito Kirishima, a first-year high schooler who's super into film. He’s out testing his camera one night when BAM! Blue light, explosion, the whole shebang. He gets knocked off a bridge but is saved by a mysterious hand. He wakes up the next day, perfectly fine, with zero memory of how he got back. Classic anime setup, right?

Then, enter Ichika Takatsuki, a new transfer student. She’s an upperclassman, and Kaito feels this weird sense of familiarity with her. Kaito and his friends are planning to make a movie over summer break, and his buddy Tetsuro invites Ichika and her friend Remon to join the project. We also have Kanna and Mio joining the cast to round out the group.

Right off the bat, I was intrigued. The premise screams classic anime shenanigans: summer, friends, a film project, and a mysterious girl. What more could you need? The first episode sets up the mystery pretty well. We see Kaito's camera mishap, the introduction of Ichika, and the formation of the core group. There's an instant connection between Kaito and Ichika, but there's also this underlying tension and intrigue.

Ichika is clearly hiding something and immediately is given a place to stay at Kaito's house after his sister leaves for 3 months. Then she kisses Kaito when he passes out and it was just a lot packed into a short 20 minute episode.

But here's where things get… interesting. Episode two gives us a glimpse of Ichika's secret: she's an alien! She came to Earth searching for a specific scenery she's only seen in her imagination. Her ship crashed after hitting space debris, leaving her stranded.

Now, I’m not against sci-fi elements in my anime, but the way it was handled felt a bit clunky. The reveal wasn't super impactful, and it felt like they rushed into it. Kaito’s sister Nanami even has a dream about Kaito being hugged by a naked girl in a ball of light! Anime sure is something, huh?

The second episode has the introduction of alcoholic drinks made by Remon, which Kanna is negatively affected by. Kaito passes out and Ichika uses a kiss to solve it. It felt so out of place but that may just be me.

Episode three focuses on Kaito's frustration over his feelings for Ichika. He tries to confess, fails, and then ditches school. Kanna visits him, and they end up on a date, which Ichika witnesses and follows. We still are not sure what the aim of the anime is or if its just a bunch of random things occuring with no over arching plot involved. There's more chaos and awkwardness that culminates in an informal confession from Kaito to Ichika when he films her.

Episode four introduces even more complications. Manami, Tetsuro's married sister, takes Kaito shopping, causing Ichika to follow them, even teleporting using her assistant Rinon. There’s a clash, some misunderstandings, and eventually, Ichika apologizes by offering to help Kaito study for his finals.

I'm not against relationship drama, in fact it can make a anime worth watching. However, there was seemingly no clear objective of the anime which is why I could not get through it.

So, after four episodes, I decided to drop "Waiting in the Summer." It wasn’t necessarily bad, but it felt… lacking. The plot was meandering, the characters felt like archetypes, and the sci-fi elements felt tacked on. There were moments of humor and potential, but overall, it didn't grab me.

The artwork was decent, I have to say, and the animation was good for its time, but the plot was what really killed it for me.

I am going to have to give it a 5/10, it just feels like an average anime that attempted to be unique but didn't hit the mark.

So, what do you guys think? Have you seen "Waiting in the Summer"? Did you enjoy it more than I did? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for tuning in to the Otaku Puppy Podcast, and I’ll catch you next month with another anime adventure!

Anime Review! Now, this is one of those anime that's constantly recommended, praised for its emotional depth, and known for making even the toughest anime fans tear up. So, naturally, I had pretty high expectations going in.

The story centers around a group of childhood friends in Chichibu, Saitama, who are torn apart by the tragic death of Menma. Years later, we find the former leader of the group, Jinta, now a recluse, haunted by Menma's ghost. She needs help fulfilling a forgotten wish so she can finally move on. To do this, Jinta has to reunite his estranged friends, forcing them to confront their shared past and hidden feelings.

Now, before I get too deep, let me preface this by saying I'm a big advocate of the "three-episode rule." If an anime doesn't grab me by the third episode, I usually drop it. It's just too easy to get caught up in finishing a series out of obligation, even if you're not really enjoying it. And unfortunately, that's exactly what happened with Anohana.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate anything about it. The premise is intriguing, and the underlying themes of grief, friendship, and moving on are definitely there. However, the characters just weren't clicking with me. I struggled to connect with them on an emotional level, and the episodes felt somewhat bland.

I know, I know, Anohana is super highly-rated, and I can understand why people love it. The potential for a deeply moving story is definitely there. But for me, it just missed the mark. Maybe it was the pacing, maybe it was the character dynamics, but something just felt off.

The good news is, I watched the dubbed version, so I might revisit Anohana in the future and give it another try with the original Japanese audio and subtitles. Maybe a different viewing experience will change my perspective.

So, should you watch Anohana? Well, if you're looking for a potentially tear-jerking anime about friendship, loss, and second chances, it might be worth checking out. Just be prepared for a potentially slow burn. As for me, I'm putting it on the back burner for now.

That's it for my review of Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. Let me know what you think in the comments, and until next time, happy anime watching!

Anime Review! This time, we're diving into the 2010 series, Angel Beats! Now, this is one of those shows that’s been lurking on my watchlist for ages, and I’m kicking myself for not checking it out sooner. Set in this bizarre high school in the afterlife, a sort of limbo for those who've had rough lives, Angel Beats! follows Otonashi, an amnesiac who stumbles into this rebel group called the Afterlife Battlefront, or SSS. They're led by the fiery Yuri, who's basically waging war against God for their crappy pasts. Their main target? The mysterious Angel, the student council president with crazy powers. It really does have some Suzumiya Haruhi vibes, which, for me, is never a bad thing. We get a pretty interesting cast of characters. Hinata the co-founder, Iwasawa from the Girls Dead Monster band, and the boisterous Yui. I enjoyed the cast so much, and it was very engaging.

The show does a great job of blending action with some surprisingly emotional moments. Otonashi's journey of rediscovering his memories while questioning the SSS’s actions, is really captivating. And, let's be real, Episode 10, "Goodbye Days," with Hinata's confession to Yui, that hit me right in the feels. It's a great example of the emotional depth this show can achieve. Now, I’ll admit, the middle of the series felt a bit inconsistent at times, like the pace faltered slightly. But man, the show really kicks it into high gear towards the end. The revelations about the true purpose of the afterlife, the shadow entities attacking, and Yuri's emotional breakthrough, it all works so well in bringing the story to a wonderful conclusion. The final goodbye scene between Otanashi and Kanade is so bittersweet that is had me all choked up. Overall, Angel Beats! is a fantastic watch. It’s not a total tearjerker like a Clannad, but it’ll definitely tug hard on your heartstrings. I felt it was an incredibly enjoyable anime, with loveable characters and a fascinating story. I think if you've not seen it before you should definitely add it to your watchlist!

Exploring the Pulse of Rock: A Look Back at the 2006 ONA "Be Rockin'"

What’s up, guys? Jrockfreak here, and I’m back with another blog for you all. I hope everyone has been doing well and enjoying the anime scene this season! Today, I want to dive into a hidden Gem from 2006, an Original Net Animation (ONA) that may have slipped under your radar: Be Rockin'.

A Brief Overview

"Be Rockin'" tells the story of Shun, a passionate guitarist who has grown up with his instrument as his faithful companion. For Shun, the vibrations of rock & roll are not just music; they're a way of life. The thrill of expressing oneself through music is something he often contemplates. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he is announced a transfer to the Shanghai office by his company. While his girlfriend, Kaori, seems excited about this new chapter, Shun finds himself questioning what it truly means to live a fulfilling life.

It’s during this time of introspection that Shun crosses paths with Kyoko, a mysterious girl with a haunting past. Once an idol, she left the spotlight for personal reasons, igniting a parallel journey of self-discovery for both characters. With themes of ambition, identity, and the emotional struggles of musicianship, "Be Rockin'" presents a compelling narrative despite its shorter episode format.

The Music and Vibes

One of the first things that caught my attention while watching "Be Rockin'"—and let me just say I dove into it raw on YouTube—was the intro song. The catchy and spirited tune perfectly encapsulates the essence of rock and sets the stage for the story. That musical vibe really drew me in, even as I struggled a bit to follow the plot due to the absence of English subtitles. Each episode is relatively brief, spanning only a few minutes, but they effectively build upon the members’ journeys, showcasing their deep connection to music and how it shapes their lives.

Themes of Connection and Choice

The crux of "Be Rockin'" lies in its exploration of choices and connections. As Shun grapples with what he truly wants—whether an ordinary, happy life with Kaori or an unpredictable path fueled by his passion for music—he faces a dilemma that resonates with anyone who has ever felt torn between societal expectations and personal dreams.

Kyoko's presence serves as a catalyst for Shun’s evolution, challenging him to rethink his limitations and embrace the unknown. After all, life's not just about seeking comfort in one another; it’s about confronting our feelings and expressing ourselves, even if it leads to pain or conflict. The pair’s mutual understanding illustrates a powerful message about the beauty of shared struggles.

Is It Worth a Watch?

If you're considering checking out "Be Rockin'," it's important to note that it's a relatively short watch. I can easily say that it won't take much of your time, given its brief episodes. However, that's both a charm and a drawback; while you’ll get a quick glimpse of an engaging story, you may not feel the depth that longer series often provide.

In a way, "Be Rockin'" is a lite version of "Beck," another anime that delves deep into the world of music and band dynamics. If you're a fan of coming-of-age stories intertwined with music, you might find "Be Rockin'" a refreshing bite-sized experience worth your time.

Final Thoughts

To wrap it up, "Be Rockin'" captures the essence of youthful ambition and the struggles of self-expression in a world that often seeks to confine us. While it might not be as mainstream or elaborate as other titles out there, it still has a story to tell about guitars, passion, and the journeys we take to discover our true selves.

So, if you’re in the mood for something different, why not give it a shot? You might just find a little piece of rock & roll magic. Until next time, keep rocking and exploring new tunes!

Catch you later!

OVA Review! The characters each bring their own unique flavor to the group, creating a dynamic that's both hilarious and heartwarming. Run is the airhead of the group whose fanciful ideas often lead to lighthearted chaos. Tooru, ever the daredevil, adds a streak of unpredictability, while Nagi remains the steady voice of reason. Lastly, we have Yuuko, whose shy demeanor adds charm and sweetness to their adventures.

A Mountain of Pancakes

In the first episode, “A Mountain of Pancakes,” the action kicks off when Kitou-sensei injures her hand during class. It might seem like a small detail, but it sets the tone for the unfolding mischief. Meanwhile, Tooru shows up with her pet cat, Tansan, bringing an extra layer of fun to the school day as they introduce the feline friend to Yutaka and Miho.

Later on, our beloved girls decide to indulge in their love for pancakes at a local café, where Miho works. This is where things get a bit unpredictable. Just as they are about to enjoy their pancake feast, out of nowhere, Yutaka makes an unexpected appearance. This surprise twist leads to a series of amusing reactions and interactions that illustrate how quickly things can spiral into hilarious chaos in the world of A-Channel.

The pancake scene not only highlights the characters’ camaraderie but also serves as a backdrop for the laughter and joy of shared meals—an essential part of friendship.

A Picture of a Wish

In the second part, "A Picture of a Wish," we see a delightful change of pace. Today, we’re taking a look at a somewhat obscure gem from the late '90s: the original 1998 anime OVA series, Battle Athletes. Spanning six episodes, this series promised a whirlwind of athletic competitions, science fiction, and a touch of coming-of-age storytelling. While many consider it a significant piece of the era's anime landscape, my own experience with it turned out to be rather lukewarm. Let’s unpack my thoughts on this series, particularly covering the first two episodes, which were the ones that managed to hold my attention.

A Brief Overview

Battle Athletes is set in a future where physical prowess is everything, and young women from various planets compete in a prestigious intergalactic event known as the “Athlete Games.” The main character, Akari Kanzaki, embarks on a journey filled with fierce competition and self-discovery, surrounded by a host of colorful characters. It starts off with a promising premise of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and rivalry.

Episodes 1 & 2: The Initial Hook

The first episode sets the tone by introducing us to Akari and her dream of becoming a top athlete in the intergalactic arena. We meet the other contenders, each with their own motivations and quirks, which helps to build the ensemble cast right from the outset. The visuals are characteristic of the time—bright colors and dynamic character designs that bring the various planets and athletes to life.

By the time I reached the second episode, I was still in a hopeful mindset, eager to see how the plot would unfold. However, despite some engaging moments around the competitive events and Akari's developing friendships, the pacing felt a bit off. Each challenge seemed to drag on longer than necessary, making it hard to maintain my enthusiasm.

A Slow Drift: Why It Lost My Attention

While I didn’t find Battle Athletes to be outright bad, it simply wasn’t resonating with me. The blend of sports competition and sci-fi elements held promise, but they often felt underexplored. I found it challenging to stay invested in the characters as their motivations sometimes felt cliché or lacking diversity. The dialogue, while perhaps relatable to die-hard fans of the genre, felt dated and didn’t quite hit the mark for me.

Additionally, as someone who enjoys a colorful narrative, I felt that the emotional stakes were not as high as they could have been, which contributed to my disengagement. Thus, after just two episodes, I found myself moving on without the urge to binge the next four.

Looking Ahead: The English Dub

In searching for alternatives, I discovered that Battle Athletes had a 26-episode series also from 1998 with an English dub available. I’m considering giving this version a shot, hoping that a different format might improve the pacing and keep me more engaged. There’s something special about hearing the dialogue in your native language—it can sometimes add an extra layer of connection and enjoyment to the story.

Anime often transcends languages, but it can also be perceived differently depending on the medium. I’m curious to see if the English dub might better encapsulate the energy of the characters or perhaps provide a rhythmic pacing that enhances the experience I found lacking in the original OVA.

Final Thoughts

Battle Athletes may not have lived up to my expectations after a couple of episodes, but it’s always fascinating to see what others think of it. If you’re an avid fan of athletic anime or sci-fi narratives, this series might still piqué your interest. As for me, I'm tentatively hopeful about the prospect of re-exploring this title in its English-dubbed form. Sometimes, viewing from a different perspective can lead to hidden enjoyment in unexpected places!

Have you seen Battle Athletes? How did it resonate with you? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with this classic!

Manga Spotlight! Its that time of the month again, we are back with another review for you all. I hope everyone has been doing well. I hope you all have been enjoying some of the current anime and also clearing out some of that Anime backlog that we all have.

The Anime that is up for review this week is one that I had to hunt down because it was not easy to find, and honestly i was better off not finding it. You can read the title up above but for the rest of this post ill be using the English name, so the Anime that is up for review is Shining Modern History.

This Anime is about a guy named Hyeon and a Woman named Min-joo who cant seem to fight off their attraction to each other. One thing I did not expect from this Anime when I first started watching was for it to have so much skin to skin contact between the characters, the Anime is labeled as a drama/slice of life but this is nothing but a Hentai with elements of Slice of Life.

If I'm being honest, even though I was watching the Anime Raw, the story just seemed to lack any passion, at least in the story department and the series just started to drag 15 to 20 mins into it. One of the main story points is that Min is actually married so she is actually having an affair with Hyeon.

This ONA is 3 episodes long and I actually didn't finish the series because at some point the skin to skin contact just got a bit much for me. Overall from what I did watch, I would give the Anime a 5/10, its not a great series by any stretch but its good to see a Hentai that revolves around people just trying to get through life.

Well I hope you all enjoy this review. Hopefully ill be back next month with a better Anime to review but until then, stay safe and keep enjoying Anime.

MAHO OUT!

Anime Special Review! Its the last day of the month so this Blog made it in just in time. When it comes to Detective Conan, I consider myself to be a casual fan, I really enjoy the series but I tend to jump in and out of it and usually just match the movies on a regular basis.

The review this week is a Anime based on the short stories from the creator of Case Closed. The Anime up for review is Gosho Aoyama's Collection of Short Stories.

I will start by saying, these short stories all provide something different a creative in their own way, and if you enjoy Detective Conan you will really enjoy these stories.

I wont go into much detail for the shorts because you need to experience them for yourself but my favorite one was the detective George short which involves a detective that's miniature. I love this short because not only is it just really good but the fact that there is no explanation as to why he is small and everyone arounds just accepts that he is.

Another favorite was the Santa Claus in Summer short which is about a teen getting drunk and drunk dialing someone and accidently activating a government earth destruction device. The last short is a backstage look at the making of Detective Conan and shows the voice actors recording and its a really cool look at the process.

Overall, this is a really solid collection of shorts and you can really see the storytelling style that Gosho likes to use and its honestly great. I found myself being hooked on each short, even the one's that were really short because they each had a solid story that just drew you in and made you enjoy them.

I would highly recommend checking these out if you can find them. If you do a little searching there are pretty easy to track down. Once again, thank you all for reading and I will be back next month with another review for you all. Until next time..

MAHO OUT!

Manga Spotlight! Air In Summer (2005)

Hello everyone! The first blog of the new year is finally here. I hope you all are having a great new year so far. Since we are diving head first back into the reviews, I figured I would start off with one that is pretty simple to enjoy.

The anime that is up for review this month is Air In Summer. Air in summer is an OVA of the Anime air that from what I like to call the Clannad Universe. I watched Air a few years ago and much like Clannad it was great and had a great story so I was pretty excited to watch this OVA.

The OVA features our three characters: Kanna, Ryuuya and Uraha and we go on this journey of them going on the run due to Kanna not wanting to change Shrines. Its a bit of a simple story but it is well put together.

Even though the characters are on the run, the OVA does add in some elements of comedy and some really good character moments. If you have seen Clannad or Air then you know exactly what to expect from this Anime and the tone of the Anime is exactly the same as those. I will say the OVA isn't amazing or anything but it was a easy watch so it didn't feel like it dragged on.

If you are a fan of these styles of anime's especially Clannad and Air then you will enjoy this ova and its only 2 episodes so you will be able to breeze through it rather quickly.

Once Again, thank you all for reading, I know these reviews are not the most in depth but I hope you enjoy them. I will be back next month with another review for you all so until then, stay safe and...

MAHO OUT!

Fall Anime 2023 Discussion!

Anime Movie Review! Backflip!! Movie (2022)

What is up everyone! Another month means we are back with a another review for you guys. I hope everyone is doing well and hope you all have had a great holiday. I'm not sure if this will be the last Blog for the year or not but I did signup for the myanimelist secret Santa this year so there may be a post coming from that.

The Anime up for review today is one that I watched a few season back and didn't realize it had a movie until now. The Anime for review is Backflip the Movie, for those that don't know Backflip is a Anime about a high school men's Rhythm Gymnastics team and its a decent enough anime so I knew the movie would be at least decent.

The movie starts off with them preparing for the Inter-High tournament and as exciting as that sounds this is where the movie takes its first dip. We see the team arrive for the competition but them it just transitions away from it and a few scenes later we find out that they lost. It was strange that they decided not to show the competition and from there the movie sort of just stumbles along.

From here, we see the senior members prepare to graduate and do one last routine. The movie honestly just sort of treads along and you can sort of just tune it out for most of the second half and not miss anything. If you are a fan of the show then the movie is a decent companion piece but don't expect anything new or really much expansion of the story.

I hope you enjoyed this review and if this is the last blog for the year, Have a great new year!

MAHO OUT!

Anime Spotlight! Angel's Feather (2006)

What is up everyone! Its a new month so that means we are back with a new review for you guys. I hope everyone is having a good October and enjoying the current anime and Anime convention season.

Apparently lee, I am in that part of the year when watching Terrible Anime is the mission, because I just watched and reviewed a terrible for the podcast and now I'm about to review one that may have been a worse of that. The Anime in question today is the 2006 Anime Angel's Feather.

I dont even know what to start with Angel's Feather, firstly it is based on a Yaoi Visual Novel video game, and you can tell from the way the characters interact that its from a game. The main story is that our main character Shou is transferred to this new school and while there he finds out that one of the top boys at the school is actually his brother who he was separated from when they were kids.

One the surface the story sounds like it could be a decent one, but the show quickly goes down hill. The issue with this OVA is that it's full of just random interactions that seem to come out of nowhere and dialogue that doesn't flow well. There is one part in the Anime where they just randomly start fighting monsters and then one of the guy's turns on the other and it just came out of left field.

Even though this Anime is a Yaoi, I'm not even sure I would recommend it to Yaoi fans because it honestly moves to fast for any fans to focus on any pairings or relationships because its just a quick rotation of guys that barely get more than a few moments of screen time.

While I do plan to hunt down the game because well I have a problem lol , I cant recommend this anime at all. The story had some potential and maybe if it was more than 2 episodes they could have fleshed it out more but as it is, its just a really rushed OVA that ends up falling flat.

Thanks for reading!

MAHO OUT!

Manga Spotlight!
