The beginning of the blog journey starts with deciding the answer to a very important question. This answer will decide which direction your blog will move, who will read it, how it will be designed, and a million other factors.

What is your blog topic?

In order to write consistently on a blog, it needs to be a topic that you are knowledgeable about and enjoy discussing. If not, writing will definitely be a chore. No actually, it will be nose-to-the-grindstone work. So after you decide you want to blog, the first order of business is to decide what you are going to write about all the time.

What is your blog topic?

The question can seem overwhelming because there are so many topics you can discuss and that interest you. Let me help you a bit with a a suggestion that will guide you towards a blog topic. One that will fulfill your desire of writing a blog.

Why do you want to blog?

The answer to this question is vital to deciding the topic of your blog. Do you want to blog because you want to:

Share information with family and friends?
Make money?
Have a place just for yourself ?
Educate?
Just have a good time?

Once you answer the question of why you want to blog, you can narrow down your blog topic. For instance, if you want to blog to share information with family and friends, then the topic of your blog can be about anything and everything. It doesn't have to be a formal affair. What ever is your fancy of the day can be the what you write about because the readers will be your family and friends who already care about you. They are going to enjoy reading the blog because they know you and already find you interesting.

What if you want to make money blogging? Well, there are quite a few things you have to consider if you want to make money blogging because your blog is going to become a business. Just like opening a business, you need to have a business plan which requires research and a huge time investment. So blogging for money is a more intense type of blogging because you have lots of hours invested before you ever put word to post.

Then again, you may want to just educate a particular group of people about a specific topic. If you know nothing about cranial surgery, then I'm pretty sure you won't do that great of a job explaining and teaching about the nuances of cranial surgery. So if you want to have an educational blog, choose a topic that you have knowledge about AND one you enjoy enough to talk about all the time for years and years.

Obviously, the most important first question isn't What is your blog topic? Nope. The most important question is Why do you want to blog? Once you answer that question, you can focus on the topic. Actually, once you determine why you want to blog, your topic will become more evident.

Write down all the topics that match with the reason you want to blog.
Create a long, long list of topics (brainstorm).
Mull over the topics for a couple weeks.
Read blogs that are about each topic you listed.
Make notes about the other blog's.
Notes should include design, tone of voice, audience and quality of contribution.
Mark 5-10 topics off your list.
Research and read more blogs for a couple weeks.
Mark 5-10 topics off your list.
Repeat the research, read and marking off topics from your list.
Narrow down to 10 topics..
Write 5-10 posts for each topic remaining on your list.
Now sit back and read all that you have written.

At this point you should ask yourself a few questions like:

Which did you enjoy writing the most?
Do you still have more to say on the topic?
Does the topic satisfy the reason you want to blog?
How does the competition compare with your writing?

If you can't decide which topic you want to blog about yet, research, read and mark topics off three at a time following each elimination segment with writing 5-10 posts on each topic.

Eventually, you will get down to that one topic that just keeps you excited. The one that serves the purpose of why you want to blog. The one that you can talk about for hours without taking a breath. The one that puts a fire under your feet and makes you run to the computer.

Okay, I may exaggerate a bit, but for me, that's exactly how I feel and I can truly go on and on for hours without pausing for air about my blogs.

That process, my friends, is a solid tip on determining how to choose a blog topic that will satisfy the reason you want to blog.

Apple MacBook Computer Is Affordable

As you know, my computer has been acting up for quite some time and I still haven't purchased a new one. Part of the reason is because I have been unable to decide which computer and what features I want included.

I know that I can purchase an Apple MacBook computer (MC968LL A) for less than $1,000. That used to be virtually impossible! Does anyone else remember when computers were as big as rooms and cost more than a house?

Yeah, it just seems so phenomenal that an Apple MacBook computer can now be just 11.6" and have 1.6GHz Intel Core i5, 2GB RAM, 64GB Flash Storage, Intel GMA HD 3000 Graphics, 11.6" Glossy Widescreen LED Backlit Display, FaceTime Webcam, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, but only weigh 2.4 lbs.

Technology is an amazing thing!

It’s hard being a real estate agent sometimes, especially when my clients don’t know exactly what they want. Often the wife will want a modern two story stucco number while the husband has his heart set on a brick colonial. These types of clients are nearly impossible to please! Usually when this happens I like to give out wireless internet providers pricing to my clients and point them toward the MLS listings in town. This way, they can see what’s out there and fight it out in the privacy of their own homes, coming to me only after they’ve more or less nailed down what they need me to find them. This makes it much easier on my end since I don’t spend tons of time trying to find common ground. Instead I get to focus on what I do best which is finding my clients a great, affordable house and then negotiating a deal for them. I love being an agent, but being a therapist is not part of my job description!

Improve Internal Linking

I've touched on cross-promoting before which is just another term for internal linking, but let's dive a little deeper into a few more tips to improve your Search Engine Optimization and increase traffic.

1. Use text links in your posts
You own blog will increase in content the longer you blog which will provide a treasure trove of information. While you are writing, refer back to older information on your blog and use text links in your new post.

2. Most popular posts text linked to the sidebar
Linking to your most popular posts boldly in your sidebar is great for you and your readers who might have missed your most magical posts.

3. Most popular posts image linked to the sidebar
This is the same as #2 except that you also include an image from the post to visually draw your reader to the posts.

4. Related posts with thumbnails at the end of posts
Use a widget such as LinkWithin to scan your blog and create an alternative post for your reader to visit after reading your current post.

5. Links in unused space
Use the wasted space on your blog to incorporate older post links and images. Often the bottom of a sidebar or the footer are empty, so fill them with your own links.

6. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I haven't done this yet, but it is at the top of my "To Do" list. Create a page with internal links answering the questions that you repeatedly get in comments or emails. Also link posts that will help the reader better understand you and your blog direction.

What is an icon?

An icon for a website has come to stand for an image, picture, or representation that stands for another site, blog or form. The icon is linked to these other places on the internet with HTML coding and when clicked will take the viewer directly to the intended location.

According to the New York Times, the online attacks on Google and many American corporations have been identified as beginning in educational institutions in China - an elite Chinese university and a vocational school. They also have ties to the Chinese military. The New York Times further states that "... the attacks, aimed at stealing trade secrets and computer codes and capturing e-mail of Chinese human rights activists, may have begun as early as April, months earlier than previously believed.... The Chinese schools involved are Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Lanxiang Vocational School..."

"Jiaotong has one of China’s top computer science programs. Just a few weeks ago its students won an international computer programming competition organized by I.B.M. — the “Battle of the Brains” — beating out Stanford and other top-flight universities."

"Lanxiang, in east China’s Shandong Province, is a huge vocational school that was established with military support and trains some computer scientists for the military. The school’s computer network is operated by a company with close ties to Baidu, the dominant search engine in China and a competitor of Google."

"Forensic analysis is yielding new details of how the intruders took advantage of the flaw to gain access to internal corporate servers. They did this by using a clever technique — called man-in-the-mailbox — to exploit the natural trust shared by people who work together in organizations."

"After taking over one computer, intruders insert into an e-mail conversation a message containing a digital attachment carrying malware that is highly likely to be opened by the second victim. The attached malware makes it possible for the intruders to take over the target computer."

That is rather disconcerting! We can't even open our private email in peace. Someone is out there trying to hack our email so that they can send out their viruses.

Have you ever heard of Mashable?

No, I am not talking about a new term for something you do to potatoes.

Mashable is a Social Media News and Web Tips website. I love it! It is jammed packed with constant tips on building a better website/blog and keeps the updates coming with pertinent information on internet issues.

Mashable was started by Pete Cashmore in July 2005 and has a reported 7 million plus monthly pageviews and an Alexa ranking just over 400. Obviously, it ranks as one of the largest blogs on the internet.

Might I also add that it doesn't hurt that Pete Cashmore is very easy on the eyes. What can I say? I'm a middle-aged woman that appreciates a nice looking man with brains! You know by now that intelligence is the number one thing I find most attractive in a man, so by adding a nice face it doesn't hurt the mix.

You've seen the little blue birds all over websites, but what is Twitter?

Twitter, created in 2006, is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers.

The 140 character limit on message length was initially set for compatibility with SMS messaging, and has brought to the web the kind of shorthand notation and slang commonly used in SMS messages.

So what does this picture have to do with Twitter? This is the creator of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.

HTML Coding Tip - Image ALT vs TITLE

The search engine spiders appreciate named pictures and crawl better over your site when they are named. To name an image, ALT tags (alternative text - just a label that is used to explain the content of an image) are used within the coding of the image HTML. TITLE tags also perform the same basic function AND can be used for element of the page (not just images) making TITLE tags seem to me the best choice. But wait, there's more. Let's start with a normal picture HTML code that will look something like this:

It used to be that ALT was always chosen above a TITLE tag, but Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox choose TITLE over ALT. Both browsers use TITLE tags as the primary source, but it is still a requirement in some countries and browsers to use the ALT tag. Besides those two conflicting requirements, the most important of all is that ALT tags are still a basic requirement of the W3C WAI guidelines which state that they must be included for accessible websites. So in order for the images on your site to be crawled by all browsers and to be compliant with the guidelines, we must use both the TITLE and ALT tags and create redundant, duplicate text. Talk about inefficiencies!

I hovered over, took a snapshot, and grabbed a picture from my Decorative Interiors Blogroll site as the example of how it will appear in all browsers since I used both the TITLE and required ALT tags.

Try hovering over the above image and a different TITLE/ALT tag was used and will display.

I found this FANTASTIC site that really has helped me with my Twitter followers. It is called FRIEND OR FOLLOW at http://friendorfollow.com/

This is how it works:

The first tab is called FOLLOWING. You click a button and it brings up all the people that you follow, but they are not following you. At that time you have the choice to either continue following, unfollow, ignore or block them.

Then you go to the next tab called FANS and these are the people that are are following you, but you are not following them. You can then follow, ignore or block them.

The third tab, FRIENDS, will show you everyone that follows you and you follow them back. Yep, you read that right. All of them, listed together. The best part...

You can download all them in a .csv file with their screen name, Twitter ID, name, location and description.

Isn't that convenient?

No longer do I have to wonder if I have a new follower. In a few easy clicks, I see them all!

Other words that are commonly misused

• bad/badly

bad = describes a person, place, thing, or state of being
The movie was bad.

badly = describes an action
The cut was stitched badly.

• its/it's

its = belonging to it
Its clean exterior mocked the chaotic mess inside.

it's = it is
It's going to be hot today.

• lose/loose

lose = to have lost something
I do not want to lose the race.

loose = free, not fastened

• principal/principle

principal = the person in charge of a school; the main person, thing, or concept; the main amount of money

If you want to prevent anyone from right clicking and copying from your web pages, the code is quite simple. This will block the visitor access to the context menu. This code blocks access from the mouse button and the keyboard button thus making it better than most "no right click" codes found on the internet. However, there are many ways around ANY "no right click" code. This code will just prevent a large portion of web users.
