Emniyet kemerinin görevini en iyi şekilde yapabilmesi için bu gereklidir. Emniyet kemeri yükseklik ayarı, emniyet kemerinin farklı boylardaki insanlara göre ayarlanabilmesini sağlar. Bir çarpışma sırasında emniyet kemerinin makarası kilitlenir ve aracın içindekilerin fazla hareket etmesini önler. Son yıllarda emniyet kemerini kaza sırasında gererek yolcuları daha iyi tutan sistemler de kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Bu sistemde, emniyet kemerindeki boşluğu almak için, bir algılayıcıya bağlı bir gergi sistemi hemen devreye girerek yolcu emniyet kemeri üzerine yüklenmeden önce kemeri gerer ve yolcunun hareketini en aza indirmiş olur. İki tip gergi sistemi kullanılır. Birincisi yaylı tip; burada, algılayıcıdan gelen uyarı sonucunda bir yay tetiklenir ve emniyet kemeri gerilir. İkinci tipte ise hava yastığında olduğu gibi bir ateşleme mekanizması kullanılır. Bu sistemde her bir tekerlekteki algılayıcılar yoluyla ABS'nin beynine tekerleklerin durumu hakkında bilgi gönderilir. Tekerleğin durduğu iletildiğinde sistem devreye girerek freni kısa bir süre için serbest bırakır. Frenleme sürdüğü için yeniden tekerlek kilitlenir ve sistem yeniden freni serbest bırakır. Bütün bunlar aslında frenleme sırasında bazı sürücüler tarafından uygulanan pompalama işleminin makine tarafından yapılan biçimidir. Doğal olarak, bu sistem çok daha çabuk ve etkili bir şekilde çalışır. ABS ile ilgili yanlış bir inanış fren mesafesini her zaman kısalttığıdır. Genel olarak bakıldığında otomobillerin çoğunda ABS sayesinde fren mesafesi biraz daha kısadır ama bazılarında ABS ile fren mesafesi değişmez ya da biraz daha uzun olabilir. Ama ABS'nin esas işlevi frenleme sırasında direksiyon kontrolünü sağlamaktır. Böylece, bir virajda lastikleri kilitleyecek kadar sert fren yapıldığında araç viraj dışına kaymadan normal çizgisine yakın bir çizgide frenleme yapabilir.
