by Ned Norris

If you’d like to get a real insight into how life was over half a century ago there are few better ways than immersing yourself into the wonderful world of Old Time Radio.

Old Time Radio is like an audio-only time machine into times gone by, in a way that no other medium can compete with.

The difference between Old Time Radio and television or film, and one of its major strengths, is that it is audio-only. Once you close your eyes the only input you have is audio, which means that, with a little imagination, you can easily transport yourself back to a comfortable chair positioned next to the fire, in a 1940s’ home. What you are experiencing is exactly the same as what someone in the 1940s experienced if they sat by the fire with their eyes closed.

Once you’ve set the scene you need to choose what aspect of history you’d like to focus in on. Luckily, almost every Old Time Radio show offers you a glimpse into these bygone days.

Obvious choices for those interested in a historical perspective would be news broadcasts of the time. This could be anything from the famous presidential broadcasts of the time through to news of the war and other major events of the time.

But there’s so much more than straightforward news broadcasts and each of these will give you a different insight into everyday life for people living in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Old Time Radio Stereotypes

If you put on an old time radio thriller such as Suspense or The Whistler you’ll be exposed to a world that reflects the society of the time. You’ll quickly pick up on the differences in the sexes between now and then. Old Time Radio is full of stereotypes that will seem alien to people who were born in the latter half of the twentieth century.

You’ll discover a world where men were tougher and rarely showed their true feelings, a world where the role of the woman was rarely more than the supportive housewife or downtrodden victim of crime and a world in which it was down to the man to protect the woman and very rarely the other way round.

The Original Amos 'n' Andy: Freeman Gosden, Charles Correll and the 1928-1943 Radio Serial

If you choose to listen to a comedy you’ll quickly realize that racial stereotypes are prevalent. Black people are rarely the star of the show and if they are they tend to be played by white actors, which is something that would be completely unacceptable, and rightly so, in today’s world.

You’ll also come across some amazing stereotypes of people from all over the globe. The British always sound upper-class, people from India always sound like snake charmers, French people always sound romantic, and Latin-American people always seem to be manual laborers or villains.

This stereotypical characterization would be laughable in today’s world, but in the old-time radio of the 1930s, 40s and 50s it reflected a society that often (but not always) held rather narrow stereotypical views of anyone who was not a white American.

Old Time Advertising

Another aspect of Old Time Radio that provides an amazing insight into this period is the advertisements. It’s funny that these days we try to avoid the advertisements and focus on the program, but with Old Time Radio shows the advertisements are often as entertaining as the shows themselves. You’ll find yourself exposed to everything from war-bonds through to a great many advertisements focusing on car parts and gasoline.

Signal Gasoline was a popular sponsor of many Old Time Radio shows

These days, there’s little to distinguish between one gasoline provider and another, but in the 1940s, particularly when the war was in full flight, gasoline suppliers were working hard to explain to people why their gasoline was preferable to the gasoline of other suppliers.

You’ll quickly realize that there was a great deal of sexism in the world of advertising back in the golden years of radio. Advertisements for household cleaning products were unashamedly aimed at women whereas advertisements relating to financial issues or cars were all aimed at the man of the house.

These trends have continued to a greater or lesser degree into today’s advertisements, but the directness of this sexual profiling was far more prevalent in those days than it is now.

Cultural Impact on Society

One final thing that is worth listening out for is the social conditioning that went on in radio. Depending on which show you listen to this could include anything from promoting Christian values of what is good and bad (e.g. Family Theatre and its philosophy of “The family that prays together, stays together), through to justifications of current affairs.

It must be remembered that this was a time when many Americans were giving a lot up to fight a war several thousand miles away, and so this constant drip-feed of justification helped to keep the public supportive of the war effort over a protracted period of time.

At a time when Hitler was using the radio as a powerful propaganda machine in Germany, and when the British Government was using the BBC to keep-up moral in the United Kingdom, the big radio stations of the time took it upon themselves to keep up the spirits of their listeners in America and wherever else American radio could be heard.

Hopefully, this short article will have given you a small glimpse into the wonderful world of Old Time Radio and how it can help you to better understand the period between the early 1930s and the late 1940s.

There is much more to learn from it than the observations I have made above, but if this starts you off on a journey of discovery using old-time radio as your time-travelling machine of choice, then my time writing it has been well spent.

Enjoy your travels in time!

By Rick Brady

The term “Old Time Radio” refers to the entertainment programs that were broadcast to the public from the early 1920s to the early 1960s. In the beginning, most radio programs emulated the vaudeville acts that were the mainstay of public amusement before radio. Comics and singers ruled the airwaves! Best of all, you no longer had to leave your home to enjoy their talents! Eventually, however, audiences matured and other types of programs were added to the radio schedule.

Drama series became extremely popular including shows about doctors, soap operas, and even movie scripts that were adapted for radio. Action series brought cops, robbers, private detectives, and westerns into the home! Fantasy series thrilled audiences with well known characters including Superman and the Green Hornet! Horror fans got their share of ghosts, vampires, and werewolves. Those who craved science fiction got their weekly craving for tales of the future, space travel, and exploration of the unknown. Game shows like “You Bet Your Life” gave the average person an escape from everyday life!

The first commercial radio station in the U.S. (KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) began occasional broadcasting in 1920. By 1922, the first regularly broadcast old time radio shows had begun. Up until the late 1920s, musical programs were most popular with shows highlighting opera, big bands, jazz, classical, and popular music.

In the 1930s, the first daytime series appeared featuring romance and other subject matter that appealed to the typical American housewife. Most of those programs were sponsored by soap products and that’s where the term “Soap Opera” originated.

Comedy series began to appear including the “George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” and the “Jack Benny Show” which both began in 1932. “Amos ‘N Andy” actually hit the airwaves in 1928! Then in the early 1940s, a nearly never-ending list of comedy programs joined those pioneers and comedy shows became the most prolific genre through the end of Old Time Radio.

By 1947, 82% of people in the U.S. listened to the radio on a regular basis. The Old Time Radio shows were not like most audio books of today where someone with a pleasant voice reads you a book. Old Time Radio shows were productions just like the television programs of today. There were sound effects, multiple actors in multiple roles, and first rate scripts! Many people today are shocked at how entertaining they can be when they hear their first Old Time Radio program. The lack of video can actually be a plus! Your mind often imagines the characters and scenery much better than seeing those things on a television screen.

Most Old Time Radio Shows were aired live up until the late 1940s. Therefore, the most popular shows had to be performed twice due to the time difference between the east coast and the west coast. Most of those programs are lost to us today as they were generally not recorded. There are exceptions where and advertiser wanted copies of their programs or for some programs that aired in syndication. Thankfully, by the early 1950s, many programs were broadcast live on the east coast and recorded for later broadcast on the west coast. A surprisingly large number of those recordings are still in existence today thanks, mostly, to collector/hobbyists who acquired them through the years. Due to their age, most of those are available free of charge on the web or at very low cost on CD (in mp3 format) from numerous vendors.

In the mid 1950s TV was becoming the king of entertainment and radio was transforming into a mostly musical format. There were shows, however, that continued for a few more years and some of them even aired at the same time as a TV version of the same program.

Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott, and Kirk Douglas star in this 1946 film noir about a husband and wife who share a dark secret from the past.

Stanwyck is Martha Ivers, a cold-hearted woman who killed her overbearing aunt years earlier on the night Martha was to run away with her impoverished boyfriend, Sam Masterson.

The aunt’s killing was witnessed by the son of a family employee. The father joins Martha in a lie about what actually transpired. He then uses the knowledge against her, forcing her to allow him to move into the family home. Years later, he coerces her into marrying his son, Walter O’Neil (Kirk Douglas in his motion picture debut), now a district attorney.

Sam Masterson (Van Heflin) reappears in the town setting the stage for doublecross, duplicity and death.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is available for full screen viewing on Google Video and can be purchased in DVD format in our OTR Shop.

“If you like the stealth of intrigue, come with me.

“If you like blood and thunder, come with me.”

Adventures by Morse was an action & adventure series produced, written and directed by Carlton E. Morse, who created the eponymous series after NBC canceled his popular series I Love a Mystery.

The 30-minute series aired 1944 to 1945, and told the adventures of Captain Bart Friday, San Francisco private investigator, and his able-bodied, Southern sidekick, Skip Turner.

Friday and Turner travel across the world solving crimes and mysteries, and occasionally freelancing for U.S. intelligence services. Their adventures touch upon the paranormal, horror, intrigue, espionage, abductions, murder, and outwitting Nazis.

Captain Friday was played on various shows by Elliott Lewis (Jack Benny Show, The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show, The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen), David Ellis (Road of Life, Suspense, Escape) and Russell Thorson (I Love A Mystery, One Man’s Family, The Detectives). Jack Edwards (Escape) played Texan Skip Turner.

The show is noteworthy not only for its storylines, but also for the eerie — and slightly camp — pipe organ, which adds to the series’ atmosphere of suspense.

Several episodes featured distinguished actors such as Sir Ralph Richardson ( OTR’s Dr. Watson to Sir John Geilgud’s Sherlock Holmes), Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Michael Redgrave.

Other familiar radio, television and film personalities starring on the show included Everett Sloane (The Mercury Theater, The Mysterious Traveler, Inner Sanctum Mysteries), Cathleen Cordell (Gaslight) and George O. Petrie (The Honeymooners, Rawhide, 77 Sunset Strip, The Twilight Zone).

Mystery Time was hosted by announcer Don Dowd, who apparently couldn’t decide which “announcer voice” to use throughout the course of the series.

The shows ran from 1957 to 1958. Exact broadcast dates of the 13 existing episodes is uncertain.

The series featured little known facts about unusual and exotic people, places and occurrences.

Ripley began his popular Believe It or Not franchise as a comic strip in 1918. Over time, it grew to include this series, and a half-hour radio program which ran from 1935-2004. Ripley also hosted two dozen short Believe It or Not films in 1930-1931.

A Believe It or Not television series premiered March 1, 1949 with Ripley as host. He appeared in approximately 12 episodes before succumbing to a heart attack on May 27, 1949. He was 58 years old.
