The Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, officially opened the Oudtshoorn Clinic today 25 May 2012. Mr Botha also visited the Oudtshoorn Hospital where he unveiled the hospital’s newest plaque received for maintaining their Baby and Mother Friendly Initiative (BMFI) accreditation.

From left: Dr Paul Rüschenbaum (Medical Manager: Oudtshoorn Sub-District), Mr Theuns Botha (Western Cape Minister of Health), Dr Renette Crous (Chief Director: Rural Districts).

The previous clinic was situated in the centre of town near a busy and noisy taxi rank and bus terminus in Regent Street. The structure of the clinic in Regent Street was unpractical and it was therefore decided to relocate the clinic to the new address in Adderley Street. Construction on the new clinic, at a cost of R3.75-million, started in January 2012.

“I’m proud that we were able to renovate this clinic in less than five months for the Oudtshoorn community who are dependant on public medical services. The number of patients that visit this clinic in a month is relatively high. Last year the clinic and the moblie units treated 34 000 patients,” said Minister Botha.

The upgraded Clinic consists of 8 consulting rooms, a doctor’s room, observation and dressing room, mental health consultation room, Voluntary Counselling and Testing(VCT) room, TB and TB specialist room, sputum booth, 3 store rooms, a well-equipped pharmacy with a waiting area for patients and 2 offices for mobile clinic staff. The Oudtshoorn Clinic services the 89480 people of the Oudtshoorn community and surrounding areas.

From left: Dr Paul Rüschenbaum (Medical Manager: Oudtshoorn Sub-District), Mr Theuns Botha (Western Cape Minister of Health), Sr Helen Human (Operational Manager: Maternity Ward, Oudtshoorn Hospital), Dr Renette Crous (Chief Director: Rural Districts).

Services rendered at the clinic include Primary Health Care, Family planning, HIV & TB, ARV, Mental health, Dietetic services, Counselling, Oral health, Maternal health, Woman’s health, Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy.

The above-mentioned services will be rendered daily from 07:00 – 16:00 (Monday – Friday) from 28 May 2012. The staff comprises of 3 clinical nurse practitioners, 1 mental health nurse, a health promoter and a VCT counselor, 2 mobile nurses, 2 assistant nurses, one staff nurse, 2 general assistants, administration clerk and a security officer. Patients are referred to Oudtshoorn Hospital. The burden of disease in Oudtshoorn is mainly diabetes, malnutrition, STI’s and TB.

Oudtshoorn Hospital

Oudtshoorn Hospital celebrated their international Mother and Baby- Friendly Initiative (MBFI) accreditation which they have received in 2008 and kept after re-evaluation in 2010.

“This is a great achievement and not an accreditation easily obtained. The hospital’s maternity unit will be constantly monitored to ensure that they continue to meet these high standards. This type of accreditation and performance can only be obtained through teamwork by all staff in the maternity ward. They deserve high praise,” said Minister Botha.

The MBFI is a global campaign launched in 1992 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and is based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Maternity facilities are assessed using globally established criteria and those that meet all the criteria may be accredited as Baby-Friendly. In South Africa, the MBFI was launched in 1994 and St. Monica’s Maternity Hospital was the first hospital to be accredited Mother and Baby Friendly.

This prestigious accreditation is a globally recognized quality standard which both parents and professionals can be proud of. In the Western Cape Province, MBFI (Child health) is one of the 8 common goals that are set as priority by the Department of Health. It is also a measure of the quality of care. All facilities that render services to mothers and babies are thus challenged to make the MBFI a reality.

The Mother and Baby Friendly Initiative supports the right of mothers to choose how to feed and care for their babies. Health care professionals have the responsibility to care, encourage best practice and to ensure that parents are given appropriate, accurate and unbiased information to allow them to make fully informed choices. In the interest of supporting informed choice, all educational materials used in Mother and Baby-Friendly facilities are expected to comply with the International code of marketing of breast milk substitutes.

Breastfeeding is acknowledged to be the best way of feeding and caring for infants and is important for infant development, while also providing benefits to the mother.

Research findings on the introduction of MBFI in health facilities have been associated with a reduction in infant mortality, particularly as a result of diarrhea and respiratory infection. The Oudtshoorn Hospital maternity unit has an average of 1822 births per year.

Today marks a milestone of improved service delivery for the Oudtshoorn community and is an encouragement to them to play their part in increasing wellness by preventing illness and injury. Together, this is a step towards better health service.

KNYSNA (11 May 2012) – Morne Tome couldn’t help flashing his fellow amateurs a large, toothy smile as he and professional Jake Redman crossed the stage at the amateur prize giving of the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Simola Country Club on Thursday night.

Oudtshoorn amateur Morne Tome (left) and his professional partner, Jake Redman from George (right) receive their prizes from Tony Smallwood, the Vodacom Executive Head: Indirect Sales Channel during the prize giving at the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Simola Country Club in Knysna.
Two days earlier, Tome had never heard of Redman. But after two days of superb dovetailing at Simola Country Club, the pair picked up the first prize in the 36-hole amateur competition with a landslide victory.

And while the Oudtshoorn amateur claimed the first spot for the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at the Fancourt Links in September, Redman took a two shot lead into today’s final round, courtesy of a 69 and a superb eight-under-par 64.

“One of the exciting features of the series is that the professionals’ names are drawn and the amateurs get to pick their partners,” Tome explained.

“The higher ranked and more well-known pros are usually snapped up early, but since I didn’t have a clue who to pick, I went with a friend’s recommendation and waited for Jake Redman’s name.”

Tome said he had quite a wait for Redman’s name to come up. “I’d never met him, but we just clicked from the word go.”

In fact, the pair combined for 94 points to finish four points clear of their nearest challengers. And now Tome is the one laughing.

“The guys joked that I’d picked a rank outsider, but Jake actually turned out to be the dark horse of the tournament,” said Tome. “And he is a helluva nice guy, to boot. If he doesn’t win here this week, I don’t doubt for a minute that he has what it takes to win this tournament and then some.”

Tome is quite excited at the prospect of challenging at Fancourt for the chance to play a round of golf with two-time US Open winner, Retief Goosen, whose career and his contribution to golf is being celebrated in this year’s series, dubbed “The Goose Chase”.

“It will be a bun fight come September, because everyone will play to win to play with Goose,” said Tome, then added: “Of course, I would love the chance to play with a pro of Goose’s calibre and show him a few things.”

The pair also contributed 20 birdies to Vodacom’s ongoing Birdies for Kiddies campaign.

This year, the charity effort which raised more than R3-million last year, will see sponsors Vodacom donate 100 meals for every birdie scored during each of the six Vodacom Origins of Golf tournaments.

The recipients are five organisations that care for abandoned, orphaned, malnourished and abused children, including African Children’s Feeding Scheme (ACFS), Project Noah, New Beginningz, Ndlovu Medical Trust and the WMCA.

Sunshine Tour rookie Ruan de Smidt aced the 17th hole during Wednesday’s first round and was thrilled to learn that his hole-in-one significantly boosted the campaign.

“During the prize giving we were told that the tally stands on 544, which equals 54,400 meals so far this year, but then they announced that my hole-in-one contributed a further 10,000 meals,” he said.

“This is all going to such a good cause and that will make the memory of my first ace just so much more special. Kind of wants you to go out there and get a few more.”

Tome will be joined at Fancourt by the nine other amateurs in the top 10, including Dayalan Chinsammy, Rory Scott, Guy Mourant, Cameron McCulloch, Garth Webster, Jacques du Plessis, Charles Greig, Marco dos Santos and Richard Jansen, who snuck in on an 86 points count out with Boland professional, Keenan Davidse.

The inaugural 36ONE MTB Challenge, held in Oudtshoorn, in South Africa’s Western Cape province over the past weekend, broke new athletic endurance ground and celebrated the birth of a new format of mountain bike challenge.

The 361km race, which followed a relatively circular loop and which had a 36.1-hour cut-off limit, revealed that it is essentially a unique hybrid event incorporating certain elements of stage racing, marathon racing and 24-hour racing.

“It’s an event that challenges in so many ways because it requires both day time and night time riding,” said Carel Herholdt of Dryland Event Management, the company that manages the 36ONE MTB Challenge. “It’s also a non-stop race, which really tests your endurance capacity and pacing judgment.”

First across the finish line in a time of 15 hours 27 minutes 13 seconds was Team C4D, a two-rider team comprising Jacques van Staden and Danzil Afrika. Incredibly, after a total distance of 361km, they ousted race-long rivals, Tony Conlon and Pete Stopforth of Marsilio Projects, to claim the victory by just one second!

The first multi-rider team (non-relay) home in 18 hours 01 minutes 46 seconds was the three-man Screaming Eagles unit, comprising Colin du Plessis, Jan Zonnestein and Paul Micklewood.

Christiaan van Zyl, a 40-year-old businessman fromCape Townwon the solo men’s race in a time of 18 hours 17 minutes 41 seconds. Stephen Drew (18:59.39) and Kevin Taljaard (19:22.22) finished second and third respectively in an event that saw the majority of the entrants (both solo and teams) finish inside 24 hours.

In the women’s solo race, highly decorated veteran athlete and former ABSA Cape Epic winner, Hannele Steyn, claimed the honours, finishing an impressive sixth overall in 19:43.24.

The event started at 21h00 on Friday 4 May with a cut-off at 09h06 on Sunday 6 May.

“A total of 89% of the entrants completed the event, which shows that while it offers a significant endurance challenge, it’s not out of reach for the majority of committed mountain bikers and even weekend warriors,” said Herholdt.

“The team that finished third in the relay section, Wilderness Wheelers Grand Masters, comprised four riders with an average age of 62. That just shows how well this race accommodates all types of riders.”

Steven Liptz, co-founder of 36ONE Asset Management, the title sponsor, attended the event and was amazed by its impact.

“If you consider that the race distance is close to half that of the entireCapeEpic, and that the riders rode through night and day and some into night again, in temperatures that ranged from close to zero and up to over 30 degrees Celsius, you realise what a remarkable event this is,” remarked Liptz.

“We plan to grow the 36ONE MTB Challenge in future, both in terms of rider value and participant numbers. Because of the relay option, it’s an event that anyone can actually be a part of, which makes it quite special. Because it’s unique and because it offers such a formidable distance, it aligns well with our 36ONE business values of hard work, passion, dedication, team work, perseverance and, of course, fun!”

Men’s solo category winner, Christiaan van Zyl, was full of praise for the inaugural edition of the event.

“We were very fortunate it was the ‘super’ full moon and there was no cloud cover. It really made the night-time riding easier, but obviously it was essential to have a decent headlight too,” he said.

“I didn’t go to the race with the aim of winning, but I did want to do well as I really enjoy my endurance events,” added Van Zyl, who completed the event on a 26-inch hardtail bike.

“My back and glutes are a bit sore still, I could have done with some rear suspension for comfort. The event was extremely well organised. There was a refreshment point every 30km or so with all sorts of good food on offer. You don’t really need a back-up team. The route wasn’t too technical – more an endurance test than a skill test, but very worthwhile,” said Van Zyl, adding that he’ll definitely return for the 2013 edition of the race.
