William Fuld the great man behind the Ouija, managed to promote an idea, do slight modifications without loosing originality and promote and produce boards for many years. Even today nearly 50 years since the Fuld name disappeared his family still promote the Ouija board as a cultural icon in the USA.

Pricing on these has seen a sharp increase in the recent 12 months. This could be due to a big release OUIJA movie combined with a greater awareness as a collectible cultural item. The buying public now have a more open mind to the art and history of these items. Going seems to be the Devils Tool tag although radical anti Ouija is alive and well in middle America if not worldwide.

In recent times also the Ouija board historical society has been developed by true lovers of the Ouija and talking board. Positive promotion of the item through people like this will ensure that these items will be part of the years of curiosity to follow.

For the collector what has the Ouija in store? To begin the collection there is ample base priced boards to collect. Did you know that the popular 1965 fuld (Parker brothers board) was produced in Canada, UK and Australia under license. The blue ghost packaging also appeared in the European boards made under license by MIRO in1970. There is four boards that would be a great start to any collection at current pricing for maybe under $200 USD.

Its also noted that the real big players in the world of collecting talking boards show no mercy when buying that rare old boards when prices can be seen to be way over the top.

$500 to $1000 and more is a regular occurrence these days and I would like to predict this will not alter in the coming years and more and more are enjoying what the Fuld family has been so passionate about.

In recent times we have seen a resurgence in cottage made boards, what I mean by that is the home made wood burner through to some classic future antiques by some well respected names in the business,

Greg Ratchuk, Jennifer Kast just to name two.

The Guys (Carnivalia are Chas Bogan and Storm Faerywolf ). Carnivalia have been there consistently now for many years. Their boards may not become antique however collectible, yes and value for money a super yes.. In recent months color gas been added as this is one of the niceties of Carnivalia.

The boards are solid and well finished , most impressive is the placnchettte simple yet effective.

Carnivalia is a work in progress, a defined direction into the intriguing world of the Ouija. Watch for anything new.

I talk about this board like its a long lost friend. But its great. It was in a era when large company executives still had the foresight to make a decision and do something . (yes I am having a go as Hasbro).

In 1967 the Deluxe 602 was released for a short time, Its not a real rare collectible but it is one that deserves respect in any collection.

Lets discuss the fortune of the Ouija

We know the Fuld Family the Reeds and the Haskolite company. These names are the business end of this phenomena and respected until today.
Fuld was a pioneer as entrepreneurship and marketers go. He believed in an idea (that history will show may not necessarily be his) , believe in it, run with it and make a legend out of it.

120 odd years later the jury is out on the catch line, is it a game?.

Based on articles in the Boston Globe June 5th 1885, the William S Reed Toy Company gave as a gift to the US president of the time a Talking board that later in another notification to the trade( Left) submitted in defeat the skill of William Fuld in winning over the market.could we credit Reed with the first Talking board as we know it.?

Fuld was a genius why he chose the Ouija as his product I cannot answer but had he applied his foresight to any product of the day he would have succeeded.
Now this isn't a history lesson on Fuld as better qualified historians have some terrific information, this is more about the determination of a early marketer whom should be place up with the best .

He promoted to the masses via some great deals to the retailer.

Fuld was a wholesaler he stood by that and that reassured his re-sellers that he would not undercut or compete.
Marketing as the original Ouija, was a great move as every possible toy and non toy manufacturer made a board of some kind.

Consumer acceptance also kept the design of this board in the public eye even with the brilliance of tray manufacturers Haskolite. Between 39 and 46 they sold plenty,

New technology enabled this company to produce what is today some of the most well presented and original boards of the day encompassing themes in Egyptian and middle eastern styles. They sold millions in fact this era of Haskolite seems to be one of great interest and really the only competition that Fuld ever had.

How Fuld handled this is still a bit of a mystery but no doubt it was handle well and Fuld came out the winner.

The glow in the dark board really was the only distraction along the way with a new market opening with the extra value , however buyers returned back to the old faithful
Today Hasbro hang their hat on the glow in the dark. I would like to think that today's consumers have more for-sight in their product than the board and the suits of Hasbro do. Hasbro today are just feeding slowly of the great work of those that have gone before.I have sent emails to Hasbro in Australia but have never received a reply. The US games juggernaut obviously don't wish to discuss either.

The simple design, the mystic, that even today exists Fuld and those associated with him created such a unique and fascinating item that will create conversation wherever its mentioned.

The years before the corporate money grab produced what is to many (like it or loathe it) a unique cultural item.

Rock Music and the Ouija

Teen culture, Music and the Ouija. The most famous song Ouija Board by 80's UK artist Morrisey proved a cultural song for the Ouija board.

Front man for the early 80's new wavish group the Smiths produced the song and had a reasonable hit with it.

It was with interest to see selling in 2010 a screen print board.

I am certain should this person have another go at making them I am sure that this Ouija would be a top seller.

So too is the limited edition Ozzy Osbourne board given out to tour ticket buyers in 2011.

These boards although common in the beginning are now becoming scarce and collectible.

Nice to know that the generation gap and the Ouija have been with us for some time, nice to note too that in the 1920's a song appeared called Ouija mine. The writers were Sam Lewis and Joe Young and Willy White. Also in the 1920's was Wee Gee Wee Gee Tell Me Do By William Jerome and Harry Von Tizer.

A tune called Mr Ouija appeared by a Ohio group in 1994.

The Mystery of the Wee-ja Girl. What started off as a simple creation turned in to one of the 20th centuries great collectible Ouija boards. The Wee-ja girl highlighted the cosmos with almost Egyptian style face of a young girl.
The one shown above was a plain style of board in the same vein as a board called" the talking board ". It was just a plain style.

After some time the Wee-ja girl came out with some color highlights giving that nice look about it.
Similar to the Ouija Queen board from Nebraska USA that had a basic plain style and a blue and yellow colored type.
Who made it? that's up for discussion , I am sure someone knows.

As sales slowed in the beginning of the 1970's a all new packaging design graced the shop floor that was ..well very 70's. The fuld board had not changed in the beginning, it was Masonite with the 50/60's lithography. However the planchette had altered to a more mass produced plastic one piece center. The first were a screw in variety , the brass pin had gone and hopefully the problem of the clear center falling out had been resolved.

In Canada at this time boards out of Toronto were in the old 60's box but a two piece. Some were in English only, the Ontario boards used the same box as Parker brothers USA but the boards were in French and English. The Litho too was lighter and appeared to have a slightly course grain effect.

With the prices rising on the 60's boards its good to remember that the early 70's board offered about the same and currently good buying.. For the collector keep your eyes on the Canadian boards as US collectors are starting to eye them off.

This event went on to inspire many a nightmare and also many a Hollywood movie.

When playing the Ouija, don't let any one tell you you need a top of the range board or any form of extra to make it happen.

My first experience was a small glass and cut out pieces of paper. The beauty of the Ouija comes in its history or in the case of some homemade boards the work that goes into them.
Personally I like the history, the thought of a family board used on those special occasions, or there was another that had been in a well known University for many years, now that one would have had a myriad of questions asked over the years.

In the attic usually seems the case. Like most things they end up in the attic, basement or shed.

The creepy attic adds to the atmosphere but for a 40 year old board just the thought of sitting there through 160 seasons adds some value.

On the other hand Ouija boards can end up in many different place. Here is a table that I would guess the previous owner had no Idea a old Fuld board from about 1915 formed a good part of the table.

The Ouija can be anywhere..... But remember its just a piece a wood.

The old Ouija, Parker brothers , Gift craft, Hask0, Copp, oh the list goes on are becoming a little collectible these days.

Not that long ago the humble pre-owned pre-loved family Ouija was a give away at garage sales and estate auctions. Not any more.

They are becoming collectible even those as late as the 1990's are

increasing rapidly with demand.

Why? They are interesting to collect, For many they are an item from a era of their life.

Many whom venture out to buy a used board do so more for the collection than the use.

The Ouija board now can still be found in reasonable numbers in the USA however outside the USA freight cost spoil what could be a good buy in a board.

The last several years too have seen the rise in home made, craft boards.

They are unique but to the collector today lack the mystic and charisma as those used boards from days gone by.
