I have a friend that has a place he just opened in Conway, SC. It is called Captain Seaweeds Bar And Grill. It has a beautiful Marina. This is such a nice place and peaceful too. If you are in the area or on your way to Myrtle Beach down Hwy 501, take a quick detour on Hwy 701 to the greatest place I've been to in a long time. They are having a great event planned for the weekend of Easter. Check out this flyer.

I saw a bowl made from magazine pages, so I thought I would search the internet for a tutorial. I found one but it wasn't as in depth as I had hoped but here is the link. Magazine Bowl Here is my version which turned out a different shape but I love it. Hope you will give it a try. I will post a pic of the bowl once it is sealed and dried. This wasn't hard, just took time to fold pages, which I did while watching t.v. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them the best I can. Enjoy!

1. Items needed: magazines, tape, glue, something to crease edges of paper, and what ever item you like to put a clear coat on finished item.

2. Fold one page in half then unfold

3, Then fold each side in half again

4. This left half folded completely and half on right opened

5. This is how it will look after both sides folded. Before folding again place small amount of glue on one side. But not on ends because you will need them unglued.

6. Then put a little glue on one side and fold and crease

7. Take each folded page and place one inside of other as pic above

8. Place small piece of tape on one side and wrap around

9. As taping ends together, coil to keep items together, this coil will be rewound into a different coil, like one below

10. Take end of above coil and start recoiling with a tight middle, and continue wrapping tightly. If you have to leave it place a rubber band around it so it doesn't uncoil.

11. Using thumbs and fingers start shaping bowl by slowly pushing on coil.

16. Cat in Background is a magazine, not part of bowl, I used covers of the magazine to make rim, so it was thicker. The flag just happened to be the inside cover.

Life in the Country, and the Economy

He was letting his hair grow out for me. I think he is sexy.

I don't think people realize what it is like living in the country and in a state where you didn't grow up...it is a great thing that I love being around Jim because if I didn't I would be so lonely, every now and then I get that way sometimes anyway. I am lucky that I do have an outlet with people through the Internet, thank you to my MaryJane Farmgirls. This way I don't feel so alone. I do have one person (Megan) I get to spend some time with besides Jim and I'm thankful for her. But it is a different life being away from family or having friends that you can spend time with more than once every month or so. I am lucky to have a husband I enjoy being around, even when I get on his nerves he always wants me around and vice a versa...lol. I think it is time to see if I can find a woman's group in the town I live closest to...maybe do some crafts or even find a place to volunteer. But that will have to wait since gas prices have gotten so high...when it warms up I can ride my motorcycle. I'm hoping that the day won't come that I will have to cut expenses even more...and loose my Internet..but our economy is pretty bad right now, so who knows. Above is a pic of my sweet Hubby. I love you Jim.

I left my house on Thursday of last week to go two hours away to Columbia, SC to help my best friend clean out her storage building, well we got it done...and it looked really good. We then went to the local hangout where a lot of her friends(bikers) and a few of mine hang out. It was a nice visit to get to see people I haven't seen in a while. On Friday I didn't think we were going to be able to come back to GA due to the bad storms we were having. But finally we made it home, right at dark. Saturday, I got the pleasure of teaching my friend how to make bread and homemade pretzels. She loves to cook and she does bake a little but not much. so it was so much fun to show her how to make them both. Everything turned out great. Edwin, her boyfriend, cooked supper Saturday night and it was amazing. Thanks Edwin.

Megan, gave me so many gifts too. But I really have to tell you about the pretty purple leather zipper bag for my purse. It as a letter 'P" on it and I just love it. But while she was here she also cleaned my outdoor kitchen, and boy oh boy did it look so good. She didn't have to do anything while she was here but she is always surprising me and doing something. Thank you Megan...Love ya Girl.

Today, I attempted my hand at making snickerdoodles. I have always loved them but have never made them before because every recipe I saw called for cream of tartar which I've never had on hand. Well this recipe called for corn starch instead. So I gave it a try. I will tell you that these turned out so good that they will be made again.

So I got it and couldn't wait to use the pastry cloth, so today I tried my hand at homemade soft pretzels. Now this is a very wet dough and I was so amazed that the dough didn't stick at all...I am so happy with my prize...EVERYONE should get one of these pastry cloths. Here are pics of the pretzels.

I make homemade pasta for the very first time, with homemade spaghetti sauce from tomatoes from the garden, and deer meat from the farm. Along with brownies from scratch. I enjoyed it but lot of work. I also made a loaf of homemade bread.

Yesterday afternoon, our two little schnauzer went missing...I walked and walked all over this farm looking for them...Hubby got in the truck and looked too...by the end I was tired and could hardly speak. After an hour I finally found one, Lucy, as I was walking down the hill toward the pond, I found her coming home. I called Jim and he went to the pond in the truck as I carried her in my arms to the pond. Calling for Maggie. I gave Lucy to Jim and I took the pistol because it was almost dark by then. I walked back up the hill calling and calling for Maggie....well that little sneak got past me some how and was on the front porch when I made it back home. But the best thing is they are back. Because the day before Jim shot at one of the biggest coyotes we've seen this year. So we are thankful they are home safe and sound. During the winter we let their hair grow out to keep them warm. So they don't really look like schnauzers right now, they look like rag muffins.

Thirty-one years ago today my youngest son was born. I was so lucky to get a beautiful redheaded baby boy that day. He has been such a blessing too.

His first words weren't Mommy or Daddy, Oh NO it was "Ball" can you believe it? BALL, he said it in the grocery store when he saw all the balls in the big cage. Footballs, Soccer balls, Basketballs and Kick balls. I was so excited that he spoke his first word that I bought him one of every kind of ball that was in the cage. I didn't have much room for groceries after that. From the pictures you can see his favorite ball turned out to be basketball.

He has always been a joy to me, his cute little freckled face and his pretty red hair. His Daddy said he is handsome Penny not pretty!

2011 Birthday

Well as a baby he was pretty to me and as he grew he did turn into a very handsome young man.

I've watched his looks change, sometimes slowly and other times very quickly. One time he is clean shaven, on his head and face, and the next time he has a full beard.

I'm so glad that during his life time he has had a chance to do a lot of different things.

The only thing I've ever wanted for my children were for them to be healthy and happy. I am so lucky that they both are.

So Happy Birthday David, I love you Son, you make me proud!!!!

My son David is a redhead...well he used to have red hair...but his beard is still very red. He came into this world as a redhead. I thought while pregnant that I would have a redhead little girl and on the day of his birth, the Dr. said as he came into this world, "you have a redheaded baby boy, and he is peeing all over me!"....well from that day on, I had the cutest little redhead. As he grew his hair color never changed.

These last few years he has shaved his head because even tho he was a hairy redhead, the hair on his head was thinning. But the last year or so he decide to let his beard grow. Now he can grow a beard in no time. This picture is where his beard has only been growing for 8 months.

He started a new job and they required he shave his beard. I just love this face...He says it is cold now...but isn't he cute?

I got my mail today and had a package from my farmgirl Nancy in FL with a great card and a Dotee doll. Now my understanding about Dotee doll is that they are made with a hanger on the top and a string of beads on the bottom. They can be made for different occasions are just about anything. But they can't be sold, they must be given away or traded. Thank you Nancy.

I also got 2 more cards from farmgirls for being the Feb. FGOTM, Darlys sent a card with 2 candy bars in it...the girl knows me...yummy.

And Holly, sweet Holly sent me a very cute card too.

I was so lucky to be chosen Farmgirl of the month. And these girls know how to make you feel so special. Thank you all so much.

This last month has been a crazy one. It has had its ups and downs...I've been let down by people, lifted up by people and loved by people. I'm blessed in many ways.....someday's I feel like hiding under the covers and never coming out....other day's like today...I talk to my BFF and feel complete again. I am thankful to have Megan in my life. No matter the things we put ourselves through, she has always been there to lend a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on and ears to listen. We have been friends since 1983. Times we don't talk, because one of us tick the other off, but when we need each other we are always there...Thank you God for blessing me with her...

Broken, but Mended by Grace: My Personal Story of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

On January 8, 2012 (after 7 years of waiting, crying and praying) I rode to the hospital with my husband and sister for the most wonderful and momentus occasion ever - I WAS TRANSITIONING FROM MOMMY-TO-BE TO MOMMY! Everyone was so excited. Sure, I had to be induced but hey, at least my Dr was inducing me 3 days early. After checking in down in ER and waddling up (I refused to ride in a wheel chair even though I was out of breath) to Labor and Delivery, I crawled in my bed and got hooked and strapped to my monitor friends. At 630am I was started on Pitocin and thus, my labor began. By 9am I was wanting a little pain relief, but definately NOT the epidural as i wanted to do this natural. After a call to the Dr I was told as long as i had dialated to 2cm I could get a shot. Well I was right on the money and shot I recieved. It helped - for 15 minutes lol. I was still determined to keep on truckin, and so I did - quietly breathing through my contractions that were about 2 - 4 minutes apart and steadily and VERY rapidly
getting stronger. My husband held one hand and my mom (who arrived shortly after the induction started) and sister switched off on the other (because I was squeezing and twisting hands very hard at that point from the pain of my contractions). Around 11am I couldn't take the pain anymore and asked for an epidural. It took about 20 minutes to get it in, and of course not without hitting some nerves which hurt ALMOST as bad as the contractions, but we finally got it - and BOY what great relief. My entire lower half was numb, I felt high as a kite and even though I was still having super strong monster contractions, I DIDN'T FEEL A THING! My Dr came in shortly after to check my progress and of course labor takes FOREVER so we were guessing 4cm. Well, we were wrong. I had dialated up to 7cm and was going into transition (which explained the sudden intensity of the contractions) so we were all excited - 3 more to go and it was time to push! At noon I got checked - 8cm! At 1230 I got checked - 8cm. At 1pm I got checked 8cm. I ended up on oxygen and having to roll on my side to see if we could convince this little miracle and blessing to come on out. By 245pm nothing was working. I was stuck at 8cm and so Dr made a call and said we had to go in through door number 2: the c-section. I was okay with it and after some prep work I was wheeled into the OR and at 316pm my beautiful daughter Gwendolyn Grace was born. After getting me stitched up and in recovery, I was finally allowed to really hold her, but it was very brief. Her blood sugar was so low she was almost comatose, and was rushed to NICU. I was wheeled back to my room where family and friends were all ready to congratulate me. I also explained what happened with the baby, and later that evening I was informed that she was doing much better and her IV was working. Eventually everyone left and hubby and I settled in for the night. The next morning, after being checked by the Dr and being told we should be going home Wednesday, I noticed I didn't feel quite right. It was a little hard to breathe, and I kept coughing, but I didn't think anything of it. I was pumping milk (not very much of course) to send to NICU for my daughter and I told my husband to shut the machine off - I really was having trouble breathing. He did, and ran out to get a nurse. At first there was no real sense of urgency - until I started screaming my head off that I COULDN'T BREATHE. I looked up and there were about 3 nurses rushing in the room. They kept telling me I was having a panic attack, but I didn't care and kept screaming I CAN'T BREATHE! I CAN'T BREATHE! One of the nurses listened to my lungs and mentioned 'shes got fluid crackling' which was relayed to the Dr. Someone put an oxygen mask on me and the nurses kept trying to calm me down and then the worst thing imaginable happened - I was suddenly unable to suck in any more air. I was literally drowning in a room full of air. I screamed I DID NOT COME THIS FAR TO DIE!....and then my eyes rolled into the back of my head. A few short seconds later it was like someone had opened a valve somewhere and i had a tiny trickle of air to suck in (they injected a diuretic into my IV which was pulling the fluid out of my lungs) and I began to breathe. I had 2 nurses holding my hand, and I kept saying 'please don't leave me - don't let go of my hand'. They promised they wouldn't - and DIDN'T. I was wheeled to ICU where i had an emergency echocardiogram done on my heart which reavealed my heart was functioning around 30-35%. I was diagnosed with Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM) which basically meant that at age 27 I was being diagnosed with a form of Congestive Heart Failure. I was angry. Why didn't anyone tell me this could happen? What were the warning signs and why was it not caught sooner? So many thoughts ran through my head. Slowly I began to realize I was alive and I get to see my daughter and that I should be thankful. I ended up spending 9 days in the hospital - 3 days in ICU after another episode on the morning of the 10th, 6 days on the cardiac floor for recovery. I went through numerous chest x-rays, a CT scan and a second heart echo. I was put on numerous medications and dishcarged from the hospital on January 17, 2012 with 8 prescriptions to fill. I have been through many emotional loops since my diagnosis, but I have also realized how lucky I am to be alive. I have become thankful for the little things and no longer take things for granted. But most importantly I get to see my beautiful daughter (who was actually ready for discharge before I got moved from ICU) everyday. Through this, I learned that both God and Satan have a plan for each and every one of us - and I thank God everyday for overriding Satan's plan. I don't know why I wound up with PPCM, but I am going to use my experience to help bring awareness to the disease. And I encourage everyone that reads this, if you don't have a personal story, to share mine with others. Its important to get the word out about this silent killer of mothers - some women actually GO HOME and days, weeks or MONTHS later they are rushed to ER for this disease.....the unfortunate ones not making it. So PLEASE - share my story, help get the word out. Mother's hearts depend on it.

I was so lucky to have a Momma that understood that her children weren't perfect. And that when we did make mistakes, small or large, she understood...she hoped from those mistakes that we would learn not to do that again. She said she had made many mistakes as a young person so nothing me could do could surprise her..She taught me that you never say "not my kid, they couldn't or wouldn't do that"...she said she would never been one of THOSE Mom's that thought her kids were perfect.

One time someone came to my Mom and said that her son was driving her car when she wasn't home....Momma didn't say "that couldn't happen, not my son"...what she said was...really, when? then she went to my brother and said "when did you drive my car?" He tried to say he didn't...made all kinds of excuses of my that person was wrong, Momma said "look me in the eyes and tell me the truth"...well after many minutes..he fessed up...now mind you...we learned best to tell the truth and fess up right away, because then the punishment might not be as hard...but either way you were going to be punished...

I don't know why I feel the need to talk so much about Momma these days and tell all these stories...but I feel now that I have this blog it gives me an outlet to talk about the most important person in my life...so hope you enjoy these next few days or weeks...there will be some bad, sad, happy and so funny stories as I go on...Everyone should be lucky to have a Momma like mine....everything I am today is because of this wonderful women. I love you Momma and miss you everyday.

Jan. 24th would have been my Momma's 76th birthday. She died 2 wks after her 70th birthday on Feb. 8, 2006. I wanted to talk a little about this picture and my family. So here goes....Jan. and Feb. are tough months for me now. My younger brother(the one on the right) HATES to have his picture taken. But our Momma was very sick and we knew we didn't have much time with her. So with a lot of begging we were able to convince him to let us take this pic. My older brother(on the left) for some reason didn't put his shirt on...to this day I can't figure out why...lol...That is me on the left and my baby sister on the right. And of course the most beautiful, loving, caring, crazy, funny and any other kinds of positive adjectives you can think of Momma in the middle...

I bet some of you are thinking Penny can't spell Momma...lol...well yes I can really...but I started spelling it that way when I was very little and never changed...My sister spells it that way too, my younger brother spells it Mama...and my older brother called her Mother...I know, I know, this is more than you ever wanted to know about my family, huh?

We lost our older brother from a heart attack in Aug 2010. So you can see why I love this pic so...and during 2009 my younger brother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon and liver cancer...he was given 6 months to live...but by the grace of GOD he went into remission 2 days before we lost my older brother... And on the 10th of Jan 2012 he called to say the cancer was back. So he is again going thru chemo...please keep him in your prayers.

I'm going to leave the story here for now but would like to come back soon and tell you more about this incredible woman, My Momma!!!! She was very special not just to us but to so many more....so I hope you come back to see what I have to say...I promise it will make you smile. This is GiGi (Gwendolyn Grace) she is the daughter of a very good friend of mine that has a very special place in my life and in my heart. We finally got to see GiGi when she turned 3 wks old. I was so excited. I made her a crocheted bear, a blanket and 2 sets of hats and booties. This little girl has our hearts. Stay turned for more of GiGi in the future.

New Year Prayer

I just received a RAOK postcard today from a Farmgirl. It is a New Year Prayer. All I know it is postmarked East Tx. I am so blessed by the thought and more so by the actual prayer. I hope to frame it so I can keep it on my desk or add a piece of yarn to the top and place it on the stand where I keep my tags. I am going to retype it here because I think it is worth sharing.

New Year Prayer

God grant us this year a wider view,
So we see other's faults through the eyes of You.
Teach us to judge not with hasty tongue,
Neither the adult...nor the young.

Give us patience and grace to endure
And a stronger faith so we feel secure.
Instead of remembering, help us forget

I worked on Christmas presents while being laid up with my ankle and so glad I got them done. Just finished making 2 sets of baby hats and booties. Had a great holiday and new years eve....so glad to be up and around without crutches too....
