Sonu Nigam in Colombo

Sonu Nigam, arrived in Sri Lanka to perform at his first concert in the island.

The 39 year old singer is the voice behind more than 1400 Indian film songs. Some of these include tracks from Kabi Kushi Kabhi Gham ,Kal Ho Na Ho , Kabi Alvinda Nah Kehna , Parineeta and film 3 Idiots.

Bollywood’s biggest music brand name dubbed the King of Playback in India will perform live in Sri Lanka for the first time on February 18 at the CH & FC which will be the biggest musical event of the year. The concert will be held at the CH & FC at 6.30 pm today (Sat 18 Feb).

Australian police seized an LTTE flag waved during the match

An LTTE flag had been waved at the cricket match between Australia and Sri Lanka in Sydney, Australia yesterday.

The media has reported that the Australian police had seized an LTTE flag which was waved during the match.

The police had reportedly taken away the man who was seen waving the flag during the Sri Lankan innings of the match.

Security had then been tightened near stands where the Sri Lankan supporters were sitting.

Manager and eight women granted bail

The manager and the eight women who were remanded on charges of having operated a brothel under the guise of a massage parlour at Sellamuttu Avenue in Kollupitiya were given bail by a Colombo Court yesterday.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne said close relatives of the suspects should sign the sureties and as such their sureties were signed by their parents, husbands or siblings after a thorough examination of the relevant documents.

The Magistrate observed that the sureties must look after the suspects as they were legally bound to do so and advised the suspects to desist from committing any offence and warned that he would take severe action should they be found repeating the offence.

The police decoy was reported to have had to pay Rs.2,000 to procurer a woman.

Two teledrama actresses found guilty of prostitution

Two teledrama actresses have been ordered to pay a fine and handed a suspended prison term after being found guilty of prostitution.

Mt. Lavinia magistrate Ruchira Weliwatte yesterday (Feb. 17) ordered a Rs. 250 fine each and a three month jail term, suspended for five years.

Police informed the court that the two women had operated from a three wheeler in front of Liberty Plaza in Colombo.

They had charged between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000 per client.

One of them had become an actress through Rupavahini Corporation’s ‘Fingerprint’ programme, and later went onto become a model, dancer and singer.

She has starred in ‘Gautami’ and several other tele dramas and ‘Sir Last Chance’, a film by Roy Silva.

Meter taxis increase hiring charges

The Association of Sri Lanka Meter Taxi Services says that their hiring charges would be increased following the recent fuel price hike.

Thereby, the current charge of Rs.30 per kilometre, would be increased to Rs.32 per kilometre from midnight today.

This was revealed at a media briefing held by the association today.

Its Secretary, R.P. Lal Kalinga added that the minimum charge of Rs. 50 and the waiting charge would not be increased.

Cement prices to be raised

Cement prices will have to be raised, said chairman of the National Cooperative Board Bandu Ranawaka.

He told that the increase would be between Rs. 5.00 and Rs. 10.00 per bag.

Mr. Ranawaka attributed the increase to the depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee.

He added that the price hike would take place after the next consignment of cement was imported into the country.
