We took a year off from this blogging thing as life was a little crazy for us in 2015!

The big life changer was that my husband accepted a job offer in another state. We decluttered our house, put it on the market, and went on a road trip while strangers wandered through our home (always a weird thing knowing random people are walking through your house). All of our hard worked paid off though. Our house sold in 8 days! It all happened so quickly, and we weren't entirely ready to make the full move yet. We ended up moving all of our belongings into my in-laws basement and garage for about 2 weeks while we waited to close on our new house. Additionally, my husband still had his previous job and was commuting back and forth. We are finally settled in our new home and are loving being closer to family.

I'll admit though, I have not been very consistent with Little Cutie as far as our "school" time is concerned. We read tons of books and occasionally color, but nothing much past that. And I don't feel like I have done anything with Little Sister other than read books.

So, as we begin a new year, I have made a goal to spend more intentional time with our girls as the days seem to go by so quickly lately and I don't want to miss another opportunity. I'll be sharing our adventures on here, as well as a few (now very old) posts that I never finished.

18 Months: Trains

We recently went and met Thomas the Tank Engine and thought it would be a good idea to take a week to explore trains!

I created this foam shape train puzzle on the computer and cut the shapes out of craft foam. Little Cutie really enjoyed doing this puzzle. Above is a picture of where she placed everything. You can print a copy of the puzzle here.

(I got the pieces for this Tot Book from 1+1+1=1. We opted not to use the Thomas and Friends part.) This was the first time we used a Tot Book and I was interested to see how it would go since Little Cutie is not much of a sit down and do something kind of kiddo. She wasn't really interested in the "How Many?" pieces at all. She did enjoy coloring the trains...just a few scribbles on each page though (more interested in the crayons themselves than coloring). We took the shapes out and put them in our mini pocket chart ($1 at the One Spot in Target!) and talked about what each shape was; she liked moving them around to different places on the pocket chart.

(I got this printable from Royal Baloo.) This was our first time using a dot marker, and really, it was just a bingo marker from the dollar store. Little Cutie wanted to move the dot marker around like a regular marker.

We don't own any toy trains, so we headed to our local library. They have a play table covered with tracks and trains. Little Cutie always loves playing with the trains. We put together a simple circular track and she drove the trains around it.

Real Train Ride
Sorry, no picture, but we had the opportunity to ride on a real train. The engine looked like Thomas the Tank Engine. The conductor even came and punched our tickets (it reminded me of a scene from The Polar Express). Little Cutie seemed to enjoy herself.

Activities

I printed out a picture of a tree from 3 Dinosaurs and leaves from Carson Dellosa to glue onto the branches. This was our first time using a glue stick, so I didn't know how Little Cutie would do with it. I showed her what to do and she mostly understood. The biggest problem was that she didn't put enough glue on it so sometimes the leaves didn't stick, but we just went over it again. She really enjoyed this.

Little Cutie really enjoyed this activity. She didn't fully grasp the scooping concept though. She held the scoop in one hand and put the pom in the scoop with the other hand. Then she carried the scoop and poms all over the house and dumped the poms from one container into the other. She actually lasted about 3 days before she started putting the poms in her mouth. We are really looking forward to the end of that phase!

Once the leaves started falling, we headed outside to check them out. Little Cutie loved crunching around on them and picking them up.
We chose the Baby Loves Jazz book series by Andy Blackman Hurwitz to structure our week. Each book came with a CD to go along with the book. Little Cutie absolutely loves dancing to music even if it is just from a commercial on TV, so I knew she would enjoy this theme.

Books
Music Is by Lloyd Moss
Music by Neil Ardley
Baby Loves to Rock by Wednesday Kirwan

Activities

Philly Joe Giraffe's Jungle Jazz (Drums)

Philly Joe Giraffe plays the drums. The CD had mini drum lessons that we practiced with...mostly it was just different beats. We don't have a drum set (thankfully!), so we made our own drum using a plastic container and some pencils for drumsticks. A short and fat container would have worked better, as ours kept falling over, but Little Cutie was really getting into it!

Duck Ellington Swings Through the Zoo (Piano)

Duck Ellington plays the piano. In the book, he plays the piano for different animals in the zoo, so we were able to talk about animals too. We have a Little Tikes Tap-a-Tune piano that Little Cutie played along with the CD.

Miles the Crocodile Plays the Colors of Jazz (Trumpet)

Miles the Crocodile plays the trumpet (another instrument we do not own). In the book, he plays different songs based on different colors. The lighter colors seemed to be more upbeat songs and the darker colors were more mellow. This also gave us an opportunity to review color.

Ella Elephant scats. We talked about how our voices can be used as musical instruments through singing, or in the case, scatting.

There are three other characters in the series that we did not read:
- Charlie Bird Counts to the Beat (Saxophone)
- Louis Lion Sings Goodnight (Vocals)
- Mingus Mouse Plays Christmastime Jazz (Bass)

Fairy Dress-Up Puzzle

Little Cutie has done many puzzles before, however, with this puzzle, she just took the pieces out and played with them without the board. We worked on matching the colors and patterns of each top and bottom without the board since she didn't seem to want to play with it.

Little Cutie loves to take everything out of the purse and put everything back in. She also loves to wear the bracelet and pretend to talk on the cell phone. We talked about how all the things in the purse were accessories.

I didn't think she would be able to match the pairs of socks, but it was worth a shot. She enjoys putting socks on her hands and tries to hold things with them on her hands. She has tried to put socks on her own feet, but hasn't mastered that skill yet.

Hat Box

I put together a box with a bunch of Little Cutie's hats. She normally hates having anything in her hair/on her head, but to my surprise, she actually loved putting on all the hats. We talked about how we wear warm hats in the winter to keep us warm and lighter hats in the summer for shade from the sun. She laughed when I tried to put her little hats on my head.

16 Months: Big Sister/Family

In anticipation of the arrival of our second daughter, we took a week to focus on Little Cutie becoming a big sister and our family. I didn't take many action shots as it was getting difficult to get around, but we did have a good time learning about our family.
Activities

Little Mommy Baby So New

We worked on showing Little Cutie how to be gentle with the baby doll and how babies sometimes use pacifiers (Little Cutie is a thumb sucker, so we don't have any pacifiers out). We also rocked the baby in our arms and tried to encourage her to carry the baby that way instead of holding it by it's head. :)

Little People Happy Sounds Home

Little Cutie played with this house for a while. She loved to put all the people and furniture through the door. She also loved making the toilet flush and the phone ring.

Family Photo Album

I put together a small 3x5 photo album of pictures of some of our immediate family members. Little Cutie loved flipping through the pages and we talked about who each person is and how they are related to her. We do not have any family that live close to us, so it was a good way for her to see family members that she doesn't get to see in person very often.

Meet the new Mrs. Potato Head! She's slimmer and has sprouted feet! Little Cutie loved this toy all week and it was the first one she went for when she saw all the toys on the shelves. For some reason she really loved Mrs. Potato Head's ears and kept carrying them all over the house. She also took out the lips and would stick them in her mouth so it looked like she had lips. We took all the pieces out and let Little Cutie put them in how she wanted. Great for fine motor skills!

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes Song

We read Knees and Toes (Scholastic Rookie Toddler) and then sang the song version while pointing to the body parts on myself and then on Little Cutie. She was giggling the whole time and loved this song!

Hairbrush, Mirror, and Washcloth

We set out a hairbrush, hand mirror, and washcloth for Little Cutie. She loved playing with her hairbrush the most. We had some visitors over and she kept brushing everyone's hair. She also used the washcloth to pretend wash her face and looked at herself in the mirror.

Little Cutie loves this toy. She loves to hug it and carry it around the house. We tried to focus on pointing out the puppy's body parts, which are labeled, and pushing the buttons on those parts to make the puppy talk.
Add a toddler into the mix, and you get a three ring circus! We are finally getting into a normal routine which has allowed me to get some time on the computer. Over the next week, I'll be sharing what we have been up to with Little Cutie!
Fortunately, that didn't stop us from learning about letters two weeks ago! (Just delayed mom in posting about it!) The goal wasn't so much to teach the alphabet, but to just start talking more about the letters that are all around us.

Books
A Is for Adventure by Irene Kilpatrick (The Backyardigans)
Dr. Seuss's ABC by Dr. Seuss
The Alphabet Book by P. D. Eastman
A to Z by Sandra Boynton
ABC (Scholastic Rookie Toddler)
Alphabears by Kathleen Hague
Chicka Chicka ABC by Bill Martin
The Hullabaloo ABC by Beverly Cleary
My First ABC: A Lift the Flap Book (DK)
I Spy Little Letters by Jean Marzollo
Discover Letters: The Alphabet in Nature (Baby eyelike)

Activities

LeapFrog Fridge Phonics

Little Cutie has always loved this toy. She likes to push the button that sings the ABC's. But she usually doesn't let the song go all the way through, so it just says "A...A...A..." She does like to change out the letters and dances to the tune.

Magnetic Learning: Let's Learn our First Words

I knew this would be too advanced for Little Cutie, but we played with it anyway. She liked putting the letters on the pages and making them stick. We talked about what the pictures were on the pages and played with the magnets.

Mini Foam Alphabet

I found this little alphabet at the dollar store. Little Cutie likes to take apart our large floor alphabet mat, so I thought this little version would be better for her to play with. She loved to take the squares apart and pop out the letters. We talked about each letter, but she wasn't very interested in putting the letters back in the squares. She also put all the letters in a container and stirred them up with an ice cream scoop. She played with this the most during the week.

Mega Bloks ABC Spell!

Little Cutie loves to build with her Mega Bloks. This set is actually meant to build the words to match the pictures on the blocks, but we mostly just built with the blocks and talked about the letters on them.

#2 will be here before we know it. Having the time to make a home cooked dinner for my family will soon become a temporary thing of the past. I decided last week (maybe it was my nesting instinct kicking in) to make some freezer meals ahead of time so we all don't have to suffer too badly after her arrival.

I have not done much freezer cooking before, so I researched different strategies and recipes for freezer cooking before venturing into this unknown territory. I decided for my swollen feet's sake to create one meal type a day, and most likely just to double the recipe of what we already were eating that day anyway.

Day 1: Chicken Parmesan

I found this recipe on Skinny Taste
and it is definitely a household favorite. For freezing, I followed all
the directions until adding the sauce. I let the chicken cool
completely, then put them on a different baking sheet than I used to
cook them on to flash freeze in the freezer. (Flash freezing is basically just freezing items individually.) This way, they wouldn't get stuck to the
pan. After about an hour, they were completely frozen and I put them in a
freezer bag. Though we haven't cooked any of the frozen ones up yet, I
would say to let the pieces thaw completely before cooking. Then either
put in the microwave until the chicken is cooked and add sauce and
mozzarella cheese or if you are making a bunch, put them in the oven and
continue the instructions on the recipe site. (I will try to remember
to update with what worked for us when we eat these). This will be one meal for us, with some leftovers for lunches.

Day 2: Spaghetti

I found this recipe on A Time to Freeze.
I realize spaghetti is one of those recipes that a seasoned cook would
probably know how to make, but I didn't know the best way to freeze it. When I
was making this recipe, I decided it was a lot of food for our little
family, so I split it up between two freezer bags to create two meals.

Day 3: Egg & Sausage Cups

I found this recipe on Once A Month Meals.
They call them Mini Sausage Breakfast Quiche, but they are just Egg
& Sausage Cups in our household. I have made these in the past for
Little Cutie and she gobbles them up! The first time I made them, I used
Jennie-O Lean Turkey Breakfast Sausage Roll. This time around, I used
Jennie-O Ground Turkey Roll. I think I preferred the ones with the
breakfast sausage, but this batch was equally as delicious. I did
notice that I always have some extra ground turkey left over after
making them. For freezing, just flash freeze and store in freezer bags. These will be for breakfasts or lunches.

Day 4: Lasagna

My husband does not like ricotta cheese, but he loves lasagna, so I was happy to stumble upon this recipe on Food.com
a while back. On this particular evening, I had already planned for us
to have lasagna for dinner, so I just doubled the recipe..sort of. I
cooked all 18 noodles together, but my skillet could only handle
one batch of the sauce mixture at a time, so I mixed those up
separately. For freezing, I lined a glass baking dish with some foil and
sprayed with cooking spray. Then I layered the noodles and sauce mixture
like the recipe says, and topped with mozzarella cheese. I did not put it in the oven. Next, I sprayed another piece of foil with cooking spray and put
it over the top of the lasagna. I put the pan in the freezer and left
it in there overnight. The next day, I pulled the lasagna out of the
casserole dish, foil and all, (so I can use the dish for other meals in the mean time)
and wrapped the lasagna with a few more layers of foil. For cooking day,
remove all of the foil and place back in the same casserole dish used
when creating it. I would recommend thawing it overnight, but you could
certainly put it right in the oven frozen. It just might take longer to
cook. This will be one meal for our family, with a few days of leftovers for lunches.

Day 5: Browned Ground Beef

I personally hate browning ground beef, and there are so many recipes where you have to before you can actually make the meal. I decided it would be helpful to have some already browned ground beef on hand for recipes like sloppy joes or tacos. I simply browned it in the skillet like normal and drained the grease. Then I put it into freezer bags and let it cool completely before putting in the freezer. I did mine in one pound batches because most recipes we use call for one pound. I felt like I had wasted space in my freezer bags, but I didn't have any smaller bags on hand. I chose to store mine into rolls because it made more sense space-wise, but you could certainly freeze them flat. This will provide for two meals for our family.

Day 6: Pancakes

These were so easy to make. We were already having pancakes for Sunday breakfast so I just kept on making them after everyone was done eating until I didn't feel like making any more. I used Krusteaz Light and Fluffy Buttermilk Pancake Mix and just followed the instructions on the bag. For freezing, I laid all the pancakes out individually on some wire cooling racks and waited until they were completely cooled. Then I just took the racks and put them right in the freezer to flash freeze them. After about an hour or so when the pancakes were frozen, I put them into two gallon sized freezer bags. This will provide for one, maybe two, breakfasts.

We calculated that we got at least six dinners out of all this for our family, plus some breakfasts and definitely leftovers for lunches. I hope to make some more freezer meals as long as my wombmate decides to stay in there. I will share them if I do! Anybody have any favorite freezer-friendly recipes to recommend?

We read Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson and of course did some coloring with a purple crayon. I created this coloring page simply by scanning one of the pages from the book and printing it out. I think she really liked the purple crayon because it showed up a lot better than some of the other colors we have colored with in the past.

Blue Jell-O Play Dough

Because Little Cutie is still putting things in her mouth, I wanted to find a play dough recipe made from edible ingredients in case she tried to put it in her mouth. I found this recipe using Jell-O and whipped up a batch. It was super easy to make. I was surprised at how long she played with the play dough. We did have to stay close by because she tried to eat some a few times though. We also got out a cookie cutter to make stars in the dough. Daddy was making little people and animals for her and she enjoyed making them move around and tearing their limbs off!

Red Sidewalk Chalk

I recently found two pieces of sidewalk chalk and a holder from the Target dollar spot on clearance for $0.30! I liked that they came with a holder...less mess! Little Cutie thought the chalk was really neat. She even tried drawing on my foot and the flowers. She didn't fully understand the concept of drawing on the concrete though; she occasionally would just hit the sidewalk with the chalk.

Yellow Balloon

We actually got this balloon from a car dealership a little while ago, but it no longer has helium and has seriously decreased in size. Regardless, Little Cutie loved carrying the balloon around the house. We also kicked the balloon around and tossed it up in the air and watched it slowly float down.

Green Bead Discovery Bottle

Little Cutie loved the seashell discovery bottle I put together for her a few weeks ago during our summer theme, so I decided to incorporate one into our color week. I found some green beads randomly a while back and knew these would be perfect, as they are too small for her to handle independently. She loved shaking the bottle and watching the beads whirl around in the water.

Matching Poms in Stacking Cups

I really wasn't expecting her to be able to match the poms correctly in the stacking cups, but it allowed us an opportunity to talk about the different names of the colors. She did get one out of six correct though!
We didn't set up the shelves as we were traveling some of the week and didn't have as many activities as we have in the past.

Books
Looking for Uncle Louie on the Fourth of July by Kathy Whitehead
Apple Pie 4th of July by Janet Wong
Fourth of July Mice! by Bethany Roberts
Happy Birthday, America by Mary Pope Osbourne
Red, White, and Boom! by Lee Wardlaw
God Bless America by Irving Berlin (illustrated by Lynn Musinger)
Hooray for the 4th of July! by Harriet Ziefert

Activities

Color an American Flag

This week, we got out some colored pencils to color with. Little Cutie was interested for maybe a minute and then walked away. She only colored with the red. I tried showing her the blue, but she was not interested.

Yankee Doodle Rhyme

This was our song/nursery rhyme for the week. I found the book by Mary Ann Hoberman to follow along with. It ended up going into much more detail than the traditional version of the song that we knew. Little Cutie loves when we read in a sing-songy voice (usually only where there are rhyming books). She dances to the beat and waves her hands.

Red, White, and Blue Bead Necklaces

Little Cutie loved playing with these necklaces. She put them around her neck. She shook the container. She took them out of the container, and put them back in. She dragged them all over the house. They were definitely a favorite of the week.

Red, White, and Blue Pom Chute

I taped an old paper towel tube to the wall and got some red, white, and blue poms. We started with 3 different sizes, but the large ones were too big to fit in the tube, and Little Cutie put the small ones in her mouth right away, so we just stuck with the medium sized poms. She wasn't real interested in this activity, but we had her attention for a few minutes.

We hope everyone had an enjoyable 4th of July weekend!

Watering Flowers

This one was more of a challenge for Little Cutie than I thought it would be. I think it was because there wasn't a good place for her to hold her little watering can. I showed her how to pour the water onto the flowers. I think she watered more of the sidewalk than the flowers, but that's okay. She was giggling the whole time.

Paint with Water

Because Little Cutie is still putting things in her mouth, I wanted to expose her to some painting, minus the mess of the paint. These paint with water books are great, but I have not been able to find them in the stores. I just tore out a page of a book that I had when I was little. She loved using a new utensil and dipping the paintbrush in the water. I wish I had a smaller brush for her little hands, but we used what we had.

Shells in a Wipes Container

Little Cutie loved putting the shells into the wipes container. She loved to hear the "clink" sound they made when they went in and hit the other shells. And of course, she started to put the shells in her mouth.

Craft Foam Ice Cream

This one was just for fun. Little Cutie had never touched craft foam before so I cut out some ice cream and cone shaped pieces for her to play with. No real agenda here, just open ended play. I made 2 cones and 6 scoops of ice cream. She liked to pick them up one at a time and carried them all over the house. At one point, I saw her putting them inside her watering can. She also liked to chew on the craft foam (will this stage of putting everything in her mouth ever end?!).

Seashell Discovery Bottles

I want to expose Little Cutie to so many new things, but I feel limited in what I can do because she still puts things in her mouth. I found the idea for discovery bottles on Pinterest and decided to make some with the shells this week. I put three shells in two bottles and filled them with water. She thought they were sooo cool! The shells clinked together when she shook them.

She Sells Seashells Tongue Twister

We have been trying to incorporate a nursery rhyme or song with each week's theme. This week the tongue twister She Sells Sea Shells seemed appropriate. I couldn't find a book with the words at the library, so I just created my own and printed it out. You can get a copy HERE. (it folds into quarters)

Big Bath Tub
We have been using the infant/toddler tub for bath time with Little Cutie since she was born. But in keeping with our summer theme, we decided to fill up the big tub and let her explore in the water with about 5 times the amount of toys we usually have in the tub. She played with rubber ducks, Alex Quacky Cups, a watering can, and even the craft foam ice cream made its way into the tub. She may have been a little wrinkly when she got out.
I decided to do something a little different this week...I didn't fill the shelves. Instead, I brought the activities out when we wanted to do one. We also read some great books about Daddy.

Books
The Daddy Book by Todd Parr
Daddy Hugs 1 2 3 by Karen Katz
Just Like Daddy by Cecilia Johansson
Father's Day by Anne Rockwell
Daddy Adventure Day by Dave Keane
Oh, Daddy! by Bob Shea
Driving Daddy by Hope Vestergaard

Activities

Make a Father's Day Card

Little Cutie gets very excited when she sees me get out a crayon and paper. In the past, we tried giving her more than one crayon at a time and it was too overwhelming for her. She loves to <strike>color</strike> scribble. Unfortunately, she still occasionally puts things in her mouth, so the actual coloring doesn't last very long. Daddy liked his card from her.

Hape Pound and Tap Bench

Daddy loves woodworking and fixing things around the house, so this toy fit perfectly with our Daddy theme. Little Cutie can hit the balls with the hammer pretty well, but can't quite hit them hard enough for them to fall through. She does love to play the xylophone and make loud music!

Laugh & Learn Learning Lawn Mower

Daddy mows the lawn in our household and Little Cutie loves to watch him from the windows. I have never seen her play with this toy as much as she did this week. I showed her how when you push it, the balls spin around in the top. She probably spent more time dragging it backwards around the house, but occasionally went forward. We noticed it works better on surfaces with more traction (like the carpet). She danced when it played songs and we pretended to mow the letters on our floor letter mat.

Bowling

Daddy loves sports, but the weather was too hot in our neck of the woods to get outside, so we opted for some indoor bowling! Little Cutie was more interested in throwing the bowling balls and pins and hearing the noise they made when they hit the tile floor. She didn't play for very long.

Dominoes

Little Cutie was so excited when we got these out. So excited in fact, that she was banging on the case of dominoes and they flipped over and all fell on the floor. She liked the sound they made when they hit the tile floor and ended up continuing to throw them on the tile. I was afraid they would break, so we put them away. She helped me pick them up one at a time.

Outdoor Foam Number Hunt

This wasn't as successful as I thought it would be. I popped out the numbers from our foam alphabet mat and scattered them around our backyard. I was thinking Little Cutie would go around the yard and pick them up, but she wanted nothing to do with it. Apparently, my child has not been exposed to grass enough in her life because that was all she was interested in. We ended up moving the numbers to the patio and after a few minutes of just running around, she started to pick them up and hand them to us. We talked about what number she picked up.

Counting Stickers

She did not like the stickiness of the stickers, so I ended up peeling them off the sheet for her and holding them over the space on the paper. Then, she pushed them down onto the paper to make them stick. She walked away as we started the fifth row. (I created this sheet to fit the stickers we were using, but you could really use it with anything. You can get a copy of it HERE)

Stacking Cups

This lasted maybe 1 minute. She does normally love the stacking cups, but I think she just wasn't feeling it at the time. I stacked them all up, she got really excited, knocked it down, and walked away.

Poms in a Container

To say that Little Cutie loved this activity is an understatement. She still occasionally puts things in her mouth, so I kept this one in a container until we were ready to play. At first, she didn't really know what to do with everything, but when I showed her how to put the pom through the hole in the container, she giggled. She did this activity over and over again. We counted the poms as she put them in the container. I think we played with this every day of the week.

5 Little Ducks

We sang the nursery rhyme 5 Little Ducks and used five little rubber ducks and one larger rubber duck to show the ducks not coming back. I was sitting behind our red ottoman and Little Cutie came around the corner to look for where the little ducks were going. We also read the Raffi book 5 Little Ducks and then I let her play with the ducks. She loves rubber ducks and when they squeak.

B. One Two Squeeze Blocks

We started our play by putting the blocks in a pyramid and Little Cutie knocked it over. These blocks come in a little zippered bag and she loved taking them out of the bag and putting them back in. Each block has a different number on it (1-10) with animals and different designs that add up to that number, so we spent some time counting those and talking about the animals. She also enjoyed throwing the blocks all over the room.

Stirring with a Bowl and Spoon

I took a small mixing bowl from our kitchen, three sippy cup lids, and a big spoon and let her stir the lids up. She absolutely loved this activity. She carried the bowl all over the house and added other things to stir in.

We didn't quite get to read every book on our list, but other than that, we had a good week with numbers.
We began with the simple theme of shapes last week (just circles, squares, and triangles), and used many toys that we already had at home. Here's what our shelves looked like:

We tried to read at least two books each day and do two activities each day. There wasn't really much structure or plan. If Little Cutie seemed like she was looking for something to do, we would go pick something from a shelf.

Books
Brainy Baby Shapes and Colors
Shapes and Sharing (Ark Angels)
Baby Mickey's Book of Shapes (Little Golden Books)
Shapes (An Educational Lift-a-Flap Book)
Abby's First Book of Shapes (Sesame Street)
Big Bird's Guessing Game About Shapes (Sesame Street)
Architecture Shapes by Michael J Crosbie
My Very First Book of Shapes by Eric Carle
Round is a Mooncake: A Book of Shapes by Roseanne Thong
Little Critter Shapes by Mercer Mayer
The Shape of Me and Other Stuff by Dr. Seuss

Triangle Peg Game

This is like the game they have on the tables at Cracker Barrel. I knew it would be the most challenging of all
the activities this week. Little Cutie couldn't quite figure out how to
get the tees in the triangle, but she had a lot of fun playing with the
tees in the container. She also would take the tees out of the container
and put them back in one at a time. This kept her occupied for probably
30 minutes.

Soccer

In the past, she has kicked little balls around the house, but I
think the size of this soccer ball intimidated her. We would kick it to
her and she would follow it around and then pick it up. She was more
interested in the grass and rocks.

Square Mega Bloks

She loves Megabloks. She can put them together pretty
well by herself. We added a container to our play and she took all the
pieces apart and put them in the container and shook them around. She
loves to make noise!

Stacking Rings

Little Cutie is pretty good at stacking rings. She
sometimes puts the wrong one on, but realizes there is a gap and takes
it off and searches for the correct one. She would take them off and
hand them to me, then take them from my hands and put them all back on.

Plates and Food from LeapFrog Shapes and Sharing Picnic Basket

We have had this toy for a
while and she used to play with it all the time, so I think she got
bored quickly (hence, why there is no picture of her playing). She can match the shapes in the plate pretty well though.

Circle/Ball Box

I basically just put a bunch of round things together
in one container. We had plastic balls, wooden balls, poms, frisbees,
links, an Oball rattle, a crinkly baseball, and a bumpy ball. She liked
the Oball rattle the best because it made noise. She enjoyed emptying
the container.

Shape Sorter

First Little Cutie took the lid off, put each shape in the box
one at a time, and put the lid back on. Then took them all out, one at a
time. And repeat. I showed her how to put the shapes through the holes and
she tried it but was mostly unsuccessful in choosing the correct hole.
After she couldn't figure it out, she would hand me the shape to put in
the correct hole.

Square/Cube Box

Our box had some wooden ABC blocks, some B. One Two Squeeze blocks, and little containers I found in the dollar section at Rite Aid. We stacked the blocks, made other shapes out of the blocks (like a pyramid), and put the ABC blocks inside the little containers. She was able to take the lids off of the little containers and put them back on. She also would pass me a block, I would create a stack, and then she would knock it all down.
Shape Song Swingalong by SteveSongs

This is a book with an audio CD that goes with it. There are 3 songs: two instrumental and one that you can read along with the book. The tune is very catchy and Little Cutie had fun dancing while I turned the pages as the story was sung. It was a little fast to look at some of the pages, but she was listening more to the song and dancing rather than looking at the book anyways.

Overall, it was a successful week for us. Next week, I hope to get a little more creative than using toys she's already been playing with for months!

This was a familiar scene in our playroom. One of the first courses of action I took to prepare our home for toddler school was to clean up the toy clutter. As Christmas and Little Cutie's first birthday came and went, the toys started to pile up. I used baskets (and even diaper boxes) to corral it all and would clean it up every night before I put Little Cutie to bed. I finally decided enough was enough.

First, I went through all of the toys and put the baby toys into storage (like teethers and car seat toys). Then I moved some bookshelves around our house. At the time we had a small bookshelf with 3 shelves in the playroom for books, while a larger 9 cube shelf was in her bedroom (with more books, but also miscellaneous storage). I decided to switch them so we could have more shelves in the playroom.

This is the current state of our playroom. I would eventually like to
get a child sized table and chairs, but our red ottoman will do for now. As we
start "school," we may find that a different arrangement will work better and
we'll move things around.

I will be switching up what is on the shelves every week, depending on our theme. Right now, I just put a few of her toys on them. I think she has enjoyed having some of her toys on display. She plays more with those then all the ones stuffed into the baskets. As we get ready to begin, most of these toys will be going into storage to be rotated with other toys.
There were probably over a hundred booths there, ranging in topics from health insurance to baby photography, and pediatricians to preschools. At the time, our daughter was 14 months old, a bit young to be thinking about preschool already, but I was very intrigued by the school booths. A few of the Montessori schools caught my attention, as I attended a Montessori preschool and kindergarten myself some 20+ years ago. I remember crying when I found out I would be going to a different school for first grade, because I loved my Montessori school so much. It was a great experience for me.

With actual preschool more than 2 years away for our daughter, I started searching online for things that we could teach her now at home. One search led to another and soon my mind was overflowing with ideas. I finally settled on a Montessori-inspired toddler school. Those in the blogosphere have different terms for everything surrounding this idea (tot school, tot trays, busy bags, etc), but to me, it's all generally the same thing...educating a toddler through intentional or purposeful play.

I am blogging here to share what we are doing in our home with our toddler, not only as documentation for our family and our future little ones, but so that maybe somebody else out there will see an idea that they can incorporate into their own home. I can't wait to get started!
