[tweetmeme]Over the past couple years my heart has really been moved towards re-arranging hymns, due in large part to the influence of Mars Hill’s worship leaders but also due to a conviction on singing theologically rich lyrics. One of my favorite hymns is “The Solid Rock” by Edward Mote. I’ve done a couple versions of this song and always enjoyed E-pop’s version of this song, but on one particular listen it moved from appreciation to an urgency to do it.

Most of the time I try and respond to that urgency in my spirit, there are a lot of songs I have in the queue to loop so I have to prioritize in some way. So this arrangement is a version off of the E-pop arrangement. Same hook in the piano melody but used some different instrumentation, rhythm and added a more heavy instrumental section.

Adam Pasion Interview Part 2 – “Gypsy Girl” story

[tweetmeme]I recently sat down with Adam Pasion who’s new album “O Hear the Rattling” (iTunes) seriously impressed me. The music to me is best described as dark folk, very rich lyrically, with dark melodies and full folk string instrumentation and groove. I’ve not heard another Christian album like this at all, and by Christian album I just mean Adam is a Christian who wants to see Christ glorified in his music, but these aren’t necessarily corporate worship songs.

In part 2 of the interview we talk about the story behind the track “Gypsy Girl.”

I’ve written previously at how brilliant this song is and how more churches should be doing this song. The bridge for this song is one of the most powerful portions of song I’ve sung, very difficult to get through composed.

That bridge was the main reason I wanted to do a loop for this. I felt like that part could and should get huge. So the loop is really simple for most of it, just has an organ, some claps, little kick, shaker, cello, but then ramps up on the tag. I spent quite a while getting the proper back and forth shaker action instead of just the single forward action that pretty much all shaker samples use. I know it’s probably not all that impressive to anyone but I was really happy with the end result for the shaker.

You’ll notice my changes in the bridge section and you may also noticed I slowed it down. I like giving the verses a little more room so people don’t get lost in the lyrics.

Song release: “Live or No Longer Live” by Kyle Campos (Live)

This song has been a long, adventurous process. I didn’t write it as a corporate worship song, it actually came together after some wrestling I was doing with God over Lordship of my life. I spoke in a recent Sunday Set List at length about the background of the song but essentially dealt with me handing over my security to Jesus.

The song is based primarily out of Philippians 1, which was challenging to work out of. The text is supremely rich, just not the most melodic phrases to work with, so it was a challenge but I wanted to use it. This recording is from the 2nd time we ever played it live. There’s plenty left to do with the song arrangement wise, so this is pretty raw but I like to get a picture of where the song is heading first naturally before working on tighter arrangement details, loops and such. I really question my judgment releasing songs publicly that are so early in the process, but getting critique at this point is always helpful.

Adam Pasion Interview Part 1 (New music)

I enjoy shedding light on great music that many have not heard and I think this fits the bill. Adam is a great guy, incredibly humble and talented. This song has been on the back burner for a long time for me. I never really dug any of the arrangements I heard, but I knew the song had some good remix potential. I finally got around to putting one together for this tune. I’ve always loved the words to this song and thought it was really a powerful song. The dominant portions of the loop I composed for it are this sort of rhythmic electronic sequence. They are layered throughout so that it hopefully doesn’t get over bearing. I leave room in the verses and pre-chorus, and even the early chorus is pretty open and simple in the loop.

Towards the end though each component comes together in the final chorus. I’m pleased with how it ended up coming together. When we play it live it’s heavy on electric guitar so the guitars add the rock bite to it that you might not pickup just listening to the loop. Our Rising Sound live worship: “True Love”

This performance of “True Love” by Phil Wickham was recorded live at Life Connection Church in Phoenix AZ on 4-26-09. It was recorded using this modest setup and using the short intro version of the True Love loop released here on ORS. There is a lot of room for improvement and that’s the primary(currently only) reason we record our live sets, to see where we need to improve. So this is just my band being transparent to our process, a humbling adventure but I’m proud of the progress our band has made in a short time and look forward to improving together going forward.

True Love by Phil Wickham is truly an amazing song and it’s always been on my short list for songs to loop, but it shot to the top of the list when Easter planning started. Too bad I started planning late because this loop took me forever. It was quite challenging for me to arrange mostly due to the fact that there’s going to be some art and drama elements done while playing it, so I had to create some space for that. I hope this loop is useful for others considering the changes I made. Here’s what you’ll find arrangement wise.

Intro: Long 2 minute intro.
Verse 1: Starts at 2:12 (bar 55)
Chorus 1: Starts at 2:41(bar 67)
Verse 2: Starts at 3:30 (bar 87)
Chorus 2: Starts at 4:00 (bar 99)

Ending: You’ll notice the final chord is not faded, I plan to wash out the chord and cut the ending tight.

I’ve received some requests already to use the loop so let me outline what customizations I can get done before Sunday. YES: key changes, fading ending, muting instruments. Possibly: shortening intro, depending on where you want it cut and what instrumentation you want to keep. If it’s as simple as cut out 1:15-2:00 then that’s easy. But if you want to move around the instrumentation in the intro I can’t do that this week.

Sunday Wrap-Up: “Ryan Delmore leads worship”

This past weekend we had Ryan Delmore out to lead worship for our Anthropology Men’s Conference. Ryan did an incredible job and was a huge blessing for our men. Ryan also stayed and led worship for our Sunday service and our entire congregation was so blessed and honored to have him. Everyone entered in right away, sang their guts out even to songs they didn’t know. It was a privilege for my band to play with Ryan and we had a blast hanging out with him for a few days.

If you haven’t yet heard Ryan’s music, then you can read my review of his record “The Spirit, the Water and the Blood“ and it has links to purchase. We did a video wrap up with Ryan but unfortunately it looks like it didn’t save to my HD for some reason, project is there but video file is not. It could be that I over-wrote it when my drummer Jon Utter and Ryan did their little tip of the hat to James Brown.

Loop available: “Hosanna” by Hillsong

I’ve been working on this loop for a few weeks and used it twice in service. I’ve been with-holding it’s release because I have a few more ideas that I want to try out before I ‘ll consider it done, but I figure why not expose that process. So I’m going to release this loop for Hosanna as version 1, when I complete it I’ll release another version and you can see the difference. I’ve made available 2 versions below, one with acoustic and the other without.

There’s a couple things to watch out for on this loop that differ from the album arrangement.

Intro starts with a pad, then drum pattern, then the piano riff comes in. Verse 1 starts at bar 35 (00:53)
The solo section is twice as long. I do a solo for the first half then we sing a tag that I wrote on the back half. Solo section comes in at bar 119 (3:05) and stops at bar 151 (3:55).

I think besides those 2 things I repeat sections as the album does. Don’t forget to rate the loop below and please comment with any questions or feedback you may have.

I wrote this song about a year and a half ago and it’s been a slow evolution from where it began. Lots of rewriting in every aspect of the song. I feel satisfied with where it’s settled. I’ve been working on a studio demo of it for a long time, so many false starts due to the rewriting. This past Sunday we recorded the set live through our modest FireStudio Project setup mostly for our own internal band uses. You have to listen to yourself to see where you stink.

The mix is pretty rough, lots of stuff we need equipment wise to get a decent live recording setup, but for a rough live demo, it’ll do. The song is about our lives as worship and love for Christ. I was tired of singing about it, praying about certain things and just ready to live it. Lyrics below and you can grab the How I Live loop here.

To my mind the best song to come out of New Life is Everlasting God. You won’t hear too many melodies better than this one, and the production is really top class. Glenn Packiam’s vocals on this always impressed me, his tone is fantastic on this. We do this song quite often at LCC and as far as corporate worship goes this is one of the more engaging ministry type songs we have in rotation.

My arrangement differs from the album version linked in a few spots which I’ll detail below. You’ll quickly hear of course I went my own direction instrumentation wise in plenty of places, but the underlying piano/strings sections remain pretty true to the album. Here’s what to watch out for as far as song arrangement differences from album:

Instrumental intro is longer. Verse 1 doesn’t start until bar 18(00:27 in)
Outro repeats the Em -> G walkup quite a bit. I added a tag onto this song that we buildup on this progression.

I finally got around to programming a loop for one of my favorite Hillsong tunes, Lead Me to the Cross. This one took me a long time to get satisfied with. I knew I wanted to remix it some, I didn’t want to play it the same old way. So what I ended up doing was changing the drum rhythm and creating a sort of Radiohead In Rainbows odd downbeat thing happening. Our drummer Jonathan did a brilliant job getting a killer beat around this track, I’m sorry the rest of your teams don’t have my drummer.

I followed the album as far as sectional(verse/chorus/bridge) arrangement so that should make things easier for those thinking of using this. As you may or may not know I have a 3 piece band instrumentally, drums, bass and me on electric guitar, no acoustic guitar (ohhhhhh myyyyyy goshhhhhhhhh). So I have 2 versions of this loop, one with acoustic and one without for most of you out there who have live acoustic.

I originally posted this loop back in July and have had some ask more details about the arrangement. So I’m reposting with some more details and releasing it on the podcast. The first time I heard Our God Reigns by Delirious I was incredibly moved. It’s just such a powerful melody.

I started experimenting with some string arrangements and stumbled on an arrangement I really liked. I knew I wanted to introduce the song slowly so I started out with an electronic pattern sequence, then built some drums on it, then brought in the strings. Slowly layering as the song progressed. I do a break down at 2:25 that has some violin plucking and a voice pad, then bring back all the instruments for the finish.

I previously released a loop for another song Where We Belong off this same album, This Is Our God. This song, With Everything, is actually my favorite song off this album, but I initially found it a bit strange how quickly this song jumped into the tag. I knew I liked the song but wasn’t sure I was sold on the arrangement. Well after listening for weeks it grew on me and I worked on the loop.

I follow the weird arrangement, not instrumentally but where the song is going, as the cd. So it should be easy to follow along in the loop. The tag is where I took it the song in a different direction instrumentally. I have some pulsating bass tones, dark n warm synths, strings, bells, and then some spacey tones towards the end. Overall I’m pleased with how it came together, let me know what you think and if you have any questions.

We Cry Out was written by Brian and Jenn Johnson but made popular by Kim Walker’s performance. This loop follows the arrangement that Kim Walker used, same key as well. It’s a great song that is mostly guitars and rhythm. So the loop uses a mellow pad through the song with a rhythm element and a few other rhythmic synth elements. It’s a pretty mellow loop that lets the guitars shine through.

This loop is for Delirious’ arrangement of Solid Rock off their Now Is the Time album. I followed their arrangement except for the intro. The intro has a silent 2 bar click in, then a syth bass comes in and does some weird stuff, then the main riff comes in at bar 15 and the band(including guitar riff) comes in at bar 19. From then on it follows the album arrangement.

The loop is pretty sparse besides the main synth/bass riff. I added some synth on the chorus and some shaker, but besides that it’s the synth and guitar riff carrying the song. I had delayed releasing this because I’ve always wanted to take it in another direction at some point, but that direction hasn’t come into my head yet. So I’ll release another version if it ever comes.

Loop available – “Where We Belong” by Hillsong

This is off the new Hillsong album This Is Our God, aka “the Healer album”. I only like a few off this album and this is definitely one of them. The phrasing of the chorus and the lyric “where we belong” just really sunk with me. Lyrically I think this is one of Hillsong’s stronger songs, a lot of powerful statements like “your grace beyond reason has paid for our freedom.” Powerful.

Remember the purpose of making these loops available is so that any worship leaders out there using loops can freely take and use. I make the Reason file available so you can make modifications if desired as well. Recently I sat down with Vineyard recording artist Chris Lizotte for an iChat interview, In Part 1 Chris talks about how he met Jesus and how he ended up getting plugged into the church leading worship. This is one of my favorite worship songs of the last couple years, great melody, great instrumentation, just a great worship song. I followed the arrangement on the album, but worked in a different instrumental melody on the “Ready Now” bridge.

This is song gave me fits. I love the song and we’ve done it a lot in our church but I put it on the shelf until I finished the loop track. While I like the original I wanted to go in a different direction guitar wise. That ended up taking me down a different path completely on the instrumental. So programming this song took a few sessions, lots of false starts on this one creatively. But I think it’s to a point now where I’m happy with the direction and overall quality. We’ll roll with it like this in worship for a while and see how it goes. As always comment with any questions or comments.

My favorite song of the latest Delirious album by far. This song has gone over great in worship in the past and I was anxious to get it back in the rotation. The loop is pretty sparse on the verses, just a short voice pad and a few bell tones, the pre-chorus and chorus have piano, strings, and a repeated bell melody. The outro on the album goes crazy, I went less crazy but there are still quite a few things going on by that point. I first heard this song after watching Mars Hill’s spontaneous baptism video they released on their easter service this year. It was one of the most beautifully arranged songs I’d heard and I was tremendously moved. So this loop is a completely transparent attempt to duplicate the genius of what Tim Smith did with this song. I have no shame in admitting it, well there is some shame but honestly the song is an amazing proclamation of Jesus’ greatness and goodness and should be played in a lot more churches. Thanks to Joe Day for pointing me to Taylor Sorensen, the original author, this guy sounds fantastic and his original acoustic version is awesome as well.

This song I warp and transpose to G in Ableton, very easy to warp this loop due to the consistent kick.

This arrangement is identical to the album release as far as song arrangement goes. The instrumentation is a bit different on the intro where I used a rhodes, the string melody on the chorus out is a bit different and the verse breakdown after the chorus has some additional ambient instrumentation. If anyone is interested in using it and would like a version without the guitars then I can post that as well or you can download the reason(rns) file which doesn’t have any guitars. In my band I didn’t want to lose the distorted rhythm guitar by playing these leads so it made sense for me to put the lead on the track.

Ryan Delmore Interview – Part 3

I had the great pleasure recently of interviewing Ryan Delmore of Vineyard Music and 5 Cities Vineyard. Ryan has a new cd coming out in October entitled The Spirit, the Water and the Blood.

In Part 3 Ryan and I talk about the origins of his new cd and how it took shape, how Marc Ford, former guitarist for the Black Crowes, got involved in the project, Ryan teases on a possible tour with Chris Lizotte following Chris release of his latest record and finally I get to ask Ryan “What’s Next?” for corporate worship in his neck of the woods.

This is the final part of this interview series and I’d like to thank Ryan for taking the time to chat. I feel like I’ve made a friend and that truly is the best part of running this site, meeting so many other great people who are so talented. For those at LCC I’m hoping we can arrange Ryan to come visit and lead in some worship so stay tuned.

I had the great pleasure recently of interviewing Ryan Delmore of Vineyard Music and 5 Cities Vineyard. Ryan has a new cd coming out in October entitled The Spirit, the Water and the Blood.

In Part 2 Ryan and I discuss more on his band experience in the church and outside the church, we riff a bit on worship band improvisation and how the Vineyard has cultivated that atmosphere in its worship bands. I also asked Ryan about his songwriting technique and if he has 2 creative avenues, one for the church and another less creatively binding avenue for songs that might not be intended for corporate worship. His answer was humble and profound and I think is something a lot of new young worship leaders should pray on.

“If I get a good melody, or some good chords, I don’t wanna waste them on something that doesn’t point people to God.” -Ryan Delmore
