One of my favorite ways to decorate our home is by styling spaces with thrifted finds that have a story to tell. Vintage, antique, and thrifted pieces add warmth, charm, and personality that you just can’t replicate with brand-new décor.

Today’s monthly thrift store makeover is a simple one, but it shows how a handful of collected pieces can come together to create a classic coffee table vignette.

Most of the items used here were collected over the years. I mixed urns, ceramic bowls, vintage sake pitchers, books, and a wicker tray to create an eclectic layered look that feels collected and relaxed. A recent local thrift store visit about a month ago had me going home with 2 urn-like containers and 2 sake pitchers. I typically don't go out for thrift store shopping. I just pop in one when out doing errands.

The best part about styling our coffee table for a fresh look? I used what I already had on hand.

Not every home decor find needs a makeover! The only item that I wasn't really happy with was the color of the golden brown urn. I loved the shape and the ring hardware on the sides. It just felt a little too old-world for my liking.

Why I Love Decorating with Thrifted Pieces

Decorating with thrifted finds allows you to create a look that feels collected rather than purchased all at once. I love mixing different textures and finishes to build interest.

For this coffee table styling, I used:

• Two thrifted urns
• A pair of floral sake pitchers
• A vintage metal candlestick
• Two ceramic bowls
• A small saucer
• Stacks of books for height: ONE | TWO | THREE
• A wicker tray
• Set of love birds
• Ginger Jar
• peonies
• moss ball
• Miniature framed art

The result is a layered vignette that feels classic, relaxed, and full of personality.

• Can of spray paint
• Spray paint nozzle (must have)
• fine sandpaper
• risers
• drop cloth

A Quick Thrift Store Makeover

For this month’s project, I gave one piece a quick refresh.

One of the urns originally had a golden brown finish, which didn’t quite fit the softer palette I wanted for the table. I removed the metal ring hardware and gave the urn a fresh coat of spray paint.

Once the paint dried, I simply reinstalled the original hardware. The transformation was subtle but made a big difference in helping the piece blend with the other elements.

The rest of the items were left exactly as I found them. Sometimes the best approach with thrifted pieces is to simply let their character shine.

Urns are one of my favorite thrift store finds, and over the years, I’ve collected several that I use throughout the house. They are incredibly versatile and work beautifully on coffee tables, mantels, shelves, and entry tables.

Spray Painting Painting Tip

• I start by turning the urn upside down. Paint in this direction first.
• Shake the can well throughout painting.
• Let it dry well before applying additional coats of spray paint.
• Flip it over to paint from the top.
• A must for a nice smooth finish! If you have any areas that didn't spray well, that may have caused a bit of a rough texture. Take the time to lightly sand them out before going forward. You will be much happier in the long run. Wipe it down well to remove any sanding dust before resuming your painting.
• I like a gloss finish with ceramics like this. It makes it look more original.

Layering Thrifted Decor

When styling a coffee table, layering is key.

I started by placing a wicker tray in the center of the table. Trays help anchor the arrangement and keep everything visually organized.

• Books add height and a sense of collected style.
• The ceramic bowls and saucer are stacked to create visual interest. (vintage finds)
• The metal candlestick adds a touch of vintage charm. (thrifted)
• The pair of floral sake pitchers creates symmetry. (thrifted)
• One of the urns holds soft flowers for a fresh look. (thrifted)
• The blue urn holds a moss ball. (thrifted)

Small details like a moss ball and a touch of greenery help soften the arrangement and bring in natural texture.

More is More (But With a Plan)

My decorating style leans a bit eclectic, especially when it comes to vintage pieces. When styling with thrifted décor, I often feel that more is better. Ha, ha!

The trick is keeping everything grouped toward the center of the table.

Our home is a place where family and friends often gather, so I like to leave plenty of open space around the perimeter of the coffee table. That way, there’s always room for drinks, coffee cups, or appetizer plates when we’re entertaining.

Keeping the decorative elements centered allows the table to stay both beautiful and functional.

Seasonal Textures

I also love bringing in seasonal textures when styling a coffee table.

For spring and summer, wicker and woven elements feel especially fresh. The wicker tray adds warmth and texture while helping tie all of the vintage pieces together.

Mixing materials like ceramic, metal, greenery, and wicker creates a layered look that feels collected over time rather than perfectly matched.

Styling a coffee table with thrifted pieces is a wonderful way to create a space that feels personal and welcoming.

You don’t need expensive décor to create a beautiful vignette. With a few well-chosen vintage finds, some books, and a bit of greenery, you can create a centerpiece that feels both stylish and meaningful.

And best of all, thrifted decorating is always evolving. Pieces can move around the house, be restyled for different seasons, or mixed with new finds as your collection grows.

What is the Design Challenge?

The concept is simple:
Start with an inspiration image and reinterpret it using your own home and style.

Our inspiration can essentially come from anywhere online. That is how Cindy gets inspired by the challenge. If it is photo inspiration, she visits the source and asks if they'd like to be our inspiration for the monthly challenge. It's that simple! It's such a fun post each month.

This month we are recreating a sweet spring vignette featuring urns and white flowers inspired by Liz from Liz Marie Blog. I have long been a follower of Liz's beautiful blog. If you haven't visited, you are in for a treat!

Up first on my visiting list is Laura from Decor to Adore. She will be sharing her take on the inspiration on her mantel.

The Inspiration Behind This Design Challenge

For this spring vignette, I leaned into thrifted vintage decor, layered textures, and timeless traditional elements. The result feels fresh, collected, and completely at home in our space. Here are the elements that I am bringing into my spring styling.

• wicker
• plates
• lamp
• birds
• candlelight
• iron elements
• wall hanging

For this spring vignette, I was drawn to classic neutrals, vintage charm, and soft florals — nothing overly themed, just gentle nods to the season.

This was the first thought that came to mind when trying to decide where I wanted to design my space. While the surface area is smaller, I was drawn to the white plates that I already had hanging, flanking this thrift store mirror makeover from a few years back.

How to Style a Simple Spring Vignette

If you’ve ever wondered how to create a spring vignette that feels collected, here’s the simple formula I use:

Start with a Base

I grounded everything with a large woven tray. A tray instantly makes styling feel intentional and contained. It also allows you to move the entire vignette easily. If I had opted not to use the tray, the styling would feel a bit flat. 

Add Height with Lighting

Two slim brass lamps add symmetry and warmth. Lighting makes even the simplest vignette feel layered and cozy, especially in the evenings.

These are two rechargeable, cordless lamps that I moved here for the styling. These little things are amazing! I use them on my husband's bourbon cart, on a counter in a guest bath, on table arrangements, when the power goes out, on a table during game night, or while doing puzzles. The choices are endless! 

Adding a little pair of lamps here makes me realize that I want a permanent lamp here. It's my favorite thing to add smart bulbs wherever I can. It's like magic to watch them turn on for the schedule that I have set. 

Layer in Thrifted Vintage Decor

I am not sure that I have ever paid full price for an urn. The majority of mine are thrifted finds. I always pick them up at the thrift store. These 2 were used as is. They required no painting treatments or repair.

The lamp in the inspiration photo from Liz Marie reminded me of this thrifted candle holder. Isn't it cute with the metal floral design? 

Most of the plates going around the thrift store mirror are thrifted. I used to buy up all the thrift store ironstone I could get my hands on. It's much harder to find now. 

The small blue and white vase is also a thrifted find.

Do you notice that the back lamp is elevated? It is sitting in a thrifted pillar candle holder. The lamp base fit perfectly in it. In its original state, it could easily be passed over. 

Thrifted vintage decor brings character and history. The patina, worn edges, and subtle imperfections make a space feel lived-in and timeless.

Bring in Spring Florals

Soft white peonies in aged urns add the seasonal touch. I love keeping spring florals neutral — they brighten the space without overwhelming it.

The peonies have longer stems, but easily bend, so they fit a bit more snugly in the urns. Notice now the lamplight glow this little area has?

Finish with Greenery

I felt like the space needed a bit more height in the corner behind the peonies, so I added one of my boxwood topiaries. 

A simple boxwood topiary adds structure and that fresh spring energy we all crave this time of year.

We Can't Forget the Birds

The gorgeous swan wall art in Liz Marie's design is a showstopper. My little nod to the birds is in the form of a little pair of love birds.

Decorating Tip: Shop Your Home First

Before heading to the store or shopping online, try this:

1. Gather all your vintage books in one place
2. Pull out woven baskets or trays
3. Add a floral arrangement (real or faux)
4. Rearrange what you already have

Often, a “new” spring vignette is simply a fresh perspective on pieces you’ve owned for years.

There is something about a sunroom that instantly lifts the mood. It’s that in-between space — part indoors, part garden — where light dances across the walls and everything feels just a little more relaxed.

For this week’s Mood Board Mondays, I wanted to create a space that feels classic, layered, and full of quiet color. Think woven textures, soft linen, block print pillows, and the prettiest wash of white on the walls.

This sunroom is grounded in Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace (OC-65) — one of my favorite clean whites — and layered with soothing blues and soft greens inspired by nature.

I created the prompt to design this moody bedroom with the help of AI.

The Story Behind the Room

I envisioned this sunroom as the kind of space where you would start your morning with coffee and end your day with a good book. It needed to feel light and open, but not stark. Relaxed, but still pulled together.

The foundation is a warm tan sofa layered with block print pillows in soft blue and cream. Across from it, wooden, spindle chairs with tailored cushions bring in that collected, Southern cottage feel we all love. The textures are important here — woven rattan, linen curtains with green trim, and warm brass accents all work together to create depth.

The rug introduces the palette beautifully — soft blue, muted green, and creamy neutrals — which makes selecting paint colors effortless.

This is not a bold, high-contrast room. Instead, it’s calm. Fresh. Timeless.

This is definitely a look that you can pull from to freshen up furniture you already own. 

Why These Colors Work So Beautifully Together

Chantilly Lace (OC-65) keeps the space feeling crisp and sunlit without turning cold. It allows all the texture in the room to shine.

Scenic Drive (CC-758) adds a soft, botanical green — subtle enough to feel natural but strong enough to give personality. It’s the perfect trim, accent, or adjoining room color.

Santorini Blue 1634 (a gentle blue-gray) pulls from the deeper tones in the rug and pillows, creating harmony between textiles and paint.

Together, they create a palette that feels garden-inspired, breathable, and effortlessly layered.

You can also use a site called Samplize to get large-sized swatches. It is so helpful when trying to decide on new paint colors.

I love creating these weekly mood boards because they make design feel approachable. You don’t need to renovate an entire house — sometimes all it takes is a strong paint color and a few thoughtfully chosen layers.

I’ve been leaning heavily into easy, comfortable outfits that still feel pulled together — my favorite kind of winter dressing.

One standout this week was a beautiful camel sweater paired with wide-leg jeans and my gold Birdies flats. It’s one of those effortless combinations that works for errands, lunch dates, or working from home while still feeling polished. I also wore a leopard cardigan styled with denim and a silk scarf, which instantly elevated a casual outfit. I am in a medium.

And speaking of cozy favorites — my purple Dudley Stephens fleece continues to be on repeat. It’s incredibly soft, lightweight, and perfect for chilly mornings around the house. I buy mediums. 

The earrings were a fun find at the Charleston market. I actually saw them featured on the Today Show last year when they were featuring black-owned small businesses. My sister-in-laws and I purchased a couple of pairs.

What I'm Reading

• We Are All Guilty Here (currently listening)
• The First Time I Saw Him (next read) This is book 2. Read The Last Thing He Told Me first. Book 1 was an Apple TV series starring Jennifer Gardner. It was really good, and has a season 2 starting in February. I love seeing books that I read turned into movies and TV shows.
• Speaking of books that I have read, going to the big screen: The Housemaid did not disappoint! On a whim, I went to the local movie theater solo to watch it. It is set up for a 2nd movie, so hopefully the movie franchise will continue. I am looking forward to reading the 2nd book installment, The Housemaid's Secret.
• My sweet friend, Jennifer, from City Farmhouse, has her very first book published! I have received an advance copy. If you like a little romance along with home remodel and decorating taking place at the coast….you will love The Summer I Found You!!!! I am currently reading it as well. It will be released on April 7th, and you can preorder it.

What We've Bought

You all know I love discovering practical things that genuinely make daily life easier.

One unexpected favorite has been these microfiber shop towels I ordered from Amazon. They’ve replaced so many disposable paper towels in our kitchen and cleaning routine. They’re durable, washable, and surprisingly absorbent — one of those simple swaps that feels like a win. While my variety is no longer available, they sell them in a box dispenser. Same towels, just different packaging.

I’ve also been testing a Korean skincare Madeca cream, and my skin has been loving the extra hydration during winter. Cold weather always makes me reassess skincare, and this one has been a nice addition to my routine. I've just started my second tube.

• Thinner wool blend socks
• New nugget icemaker. Our old one lasted 2 years. I've done a lot of research, and the lifespan seems to be 1-2 years across brands. We love nugget ice for cocktails and everyday beverages. I've only had this one for a week. So far so good.
• Cellulite oil kit. This is my second bottle. This time I ordered it with the roller.
• Snowboots for my husband.

Pets

Life at home has felt especially cozy lately.

Phoebe spent time playing on the rug while Cleo supervised closely (as cats always do). Watching those everyday moments unfold is honestly one of my greatest joys right now. The farm is from when our kids were little. Phoebe LOVES it! She knows where I keep it, and goes straight to it to pull it out when she's over. I checked, and the farm is still made. It looks a bit more modern, but similar, and is a great toy!

Large Cat Carrier

I needed to get new cat carriers. These are fabulous. She can see the comparison to the old carrier. The zippers are corroded and don't work well. This is the large size.e 

Cat Tower

If you are looking for a smaller cat tower that fits up against the wall and has a compact footprint, this is the one. I bought this for Jack to put upstairs so he'd have a place to get away from Theo. 

We brought it downstairs last summer when we rescued a litter of kittens. They loved playing on it. It's remained here ever since. Cleo loves it. We feed her on the very top, so the dogs can't get her food. 

Theo and Bentley are loving billy sticks. It takes Bentley a couple of days to eat it. Theo is pretty fast with his.

Ashlyn and Tim kept the cats and Bentley when we went to Charleston for a long weekend. So glad we can keep each other's cats.

This is Cleo's sister. My mom has Tinker Belle. Isn't she beautiful!

Theo loves this giraffe. It was an impulse buy at Dollar General. It's been a tough little toy.

In the Kitchen

This is always a favorite in our home and is simple to prepare. This is the Melting Tomatoes Salmon. You will love it!

When I cook a pasta dish, it usually isn't by a recipe. It's creative to use things I have. This uses a base of vodka sauce that I made and prepared over the summer with fresh tomatoes. It has broccoli, 1/2 a pound of chorizo, and about 4 chopped slices of thick-cut bacon. It was so good. We have enough for leftovers tonight. Don't you just love a night of leftovers?

Family Birthday

We finally got to celebrate our baby's birthday. We had to reschedule due to 2 weeks of winter weather. Last Saturday we had a wonderful family dinner. Ashlyn is now 27!

There’s something comforting about a living room that feels calm and lived-in, where nothing is too precious and everything has a purpose. The kind of space that welcomes you in at the end of the day, invites conversation, and quietly evolves over time. That feeling—easy, layered, and timeless—is what inspired this week’s Mood Board Mondays.

For this living room, I started with the paint color and built outward, letting soft neutrals, classic blues, and warm textures shape the rest of the space.

I created the prompt to design this moody bedroom with the help of AI.

The Story Behind the Room

I imagine this room as the heart of the home. Morning light filtering in through the windows, coffee cups left on the table, a favorite book resting on the sofa arm. It’s a space meant for everyday life—family gatherings, quiet afternoons, and evenings that stretch a little longer than planned.

The furnishings feel collected rather than matched. A comfortable sofa anchors the room, softened with tailored pillows. A well-worn rug adds warmth underfoot, grounding the space and hinting at history. Lamps glow softly as daylight fades, and the room settles into its most inviting version of itself.

Nothing here is flashy or fleeting. Instead, this living room is designed to feel familiar, welcoming, and quietly beautiful—now and years from now.

I see this look as the base, the starting point. To create a true cottage look, you will add all your collected treasures and found, thrifted items. The art above the sofa can be a starting point for a collected gallery wall. 

Why These Colors Work So Beautifully Together

At the center of this palette is Wind’s Breath (981) by Benjamin Moore, a warm, creamy neutral that brings softness without feeling flat. It adapts beautifully to changing light, making it an ideal choice for living rooms and family spaces where you want an easy, relaxed backdrop.

To add depth and contrast, I layered in Andes Summit (CSP-600), a rich blue that grounds the space and adds a classic note, and Herbes de Provence (OC-634), a muted green that brings an organic, calming balance. Together, these colors create a palette that feels timeless and versatile—perfect for a collected cottage-style living room.

Benjamin Moore Wind’s Breath (981) is a warm, creamy neutral that brings an effortless softness to a space without feeling flat or washed out. It has just enough depth to feel cozy, yet it reflects light beautifully, making it especially well-suited for living rooms and family spaces. This is the kind of color that adapts throughout the day—warm in the morning, calm and grounded by evening—creating a backdrop that feels timeless, welcoming, and easy to live with.

Benjamin Moore Andes Summit (CSP-600)is a rich, classic blue that adds depth and contrast without overwhelming the room. It pairs beautifully with soft neutrals like Wind’s Breath, grounding the palette while still feeling refined and traditional. Used in accents, furnishings, or adjoining spaces, this blue brings a sense of calm confidence and gives the room that collected, layered look that feels intentional rather than trendy.

Benjamin Moore Herbes de Provence (OC-634) is a muted green with a gentle, organic quality that softens the overall palette. It introduces a natural element that balances the blues and neutrals, adding warmth and subtle character without drawing too much attention. This color works beautifully in supporting roles—through accents, nearby rooms, or even decor—bringing an understated, calming presence that helps the space feel complete.

I always recommend purchasing small sample pots of color before investing in large quantities. You can also use a site called Samplize to get large-sized swatches. 

A note about the paint colors selected: the main color is the wall color. The supporting colors do not necessarily need to be painted. You could use these to paint furniture, but you can also use these colors as you search for decor, art, and fabrics.

There’s something about winter weeks that feel both slow and full all at once. This one has been wrapped in gray skies, quiet moments at home, and the kind of anticipation that comes when you know the weather is about to change everything—if only for a day or two. We’re bracing for a major ice storm here in Upstate South Carolina, expected to move in this evening, and the house has that familiar hum of preparation and waiting.

Ashlyn and Tim have had Bentley. We should have him back today, but we had to reschedule Ashlyn's family Birthday dinner for tonight. We are in the middle of a snow storm today….. southern style! 

This week felt very us—simple meals, cozy layers, time spent indoors, and keeping a close eye on both the forecast and each other. Let’s step onto the porch and catch up.

Cold weather dressing has been all about comfort lately, but still feeling pulled together. This green fleece has been on repeat—it’s warm without being bulky and easy to throw on for errands or a quick walk outside. I’ve also been reaching for my red sweater paired with black pants and loafers. It’s such an easy outfit, but feels cheerful and classic during the gray winter days.

Layering pieces that work hard and still feel polished are what I gravitate toward this time of year. Nothing fussy—just pieces that make getting dressed simple.

FIT TIP: I wear a medium in Dudley Fleece. It's warm and cozy!!! Now is the time to pick some up on sale.

The red Quince cashmere sweater has been one of my favorite pieces to reach for this winter. The color adds just the right amount of cheer to these gray January days, and the fit is relaxed without feeling sloppy. It’s the kind of sweater that works just as well for everyday errands as it does for a casual lunch or a cozy afternoon at home. Soft, lightweight, and easy to style, it’s one of those wardrobe staples that proves simple really can be special.

FIT TIP: I am wearing a medium in this loose-fit sweater with sleeves rolled up. I ordered a medium so I could layer shirts underneath it. I've linked several other options above in the shop the look link under the photo. 

In the Kitchen

Meals this week were very much “use what we have” cooking, which I honestly love. One standout was shrimp fried cauliflower rice—full of flavor, loaded with vegetables, and surprisingly satisfying. A good no-salt seasoning makes all the difference, especially when you’re trying to keep things balanced without sacrificing taste.

We also had a hearty vegetable beef soup simmering away, the kind of meal that warms the house and tastes even better the next day. Paired with homemade sourdough, it was exactly what we needed as temperatures dropped.

There’s something comforting about returning to these dependable, nourishing meals when winter settles in.

I baked sourdough again this week, and there’s just something grounding about the process—mixing, waiting, shaping, and finally pulling golden loaves from the oven. The kitchen smelled wonderful, and the bread didn’t last long. Sourdough has become one of those rhythms that anchors my week, especially when we’re spending more time at home.

I've been keeping packs of frozen cauliflower rice and risotto in the freezer. They are great for a quick meal. I just use whatever protein and veggies I have on hand.

This no-salt seasoning has quietly become a staple in our kitchen. I love having something on hand that adds great flavor without overpowering a dish, especially when I’m cooking soups, vegetables, or quick weeknight meals. It’s been especially handy during the winter months when comfort food is on repeat, and it makes it easy to season generously while still keeping things balanced. I purchased it at Costco.

I'm on a lunch salad kick! This one has shredded kale, tuna pouch, the above seasoning, about 1/4 cup of canned lentils, shredded carrot, half an avocado…..tossed with a bit of fresh lemon juice, olive oil, and champagne vinegar.

Yummy Vegetable Beef Soup!

We had this soup 2 times last week and froze one container. I make grilled cheese with our sourdough bread. These containers work in the freezer and hold enough for 2 servings. This is perfect for empty nesters! 

Ice Storm

As the storm moved in, the views outside shifted quickly. Ice coated the trees, weighed down branches, and turned everything quiet and still. Looking out the window at the garden and yard felt both beautiful and a little unsettling—ice storms do that. They’re peaceful and unpredictable all at once.

We spent much of the day watching, waiting, and checking in on updates as conditions changed. Luckily, we never lost power!

Ice storms have a way of finding every weak spot, and this one reminded us of that quickly. We ended up with water coming through the kitchen ceiling, which meant buckets, towels, and quick thinking. It’s never fun to deal with household issues, but it’s part of homeownership—and a reminder to take things in stride.

Thankfully, it was manageable, and we’re already planning next steps. Not how you want to spend a winter evening, but we’ve learned that flexibility goes a long way.

A Year with Theo

The pets have been keeping close during the cold snap. Theo has been very content staying inside, watching everything unfold from a warm spot on the rug. These quieter winter days always remind me how much comfort animals bring to a home—especially when the world outside feels icy and uncertain. We are at the one-year mark Theo. He's come a long way and you'd never know that he started out as a starving puppy dragging himself from the woods with 2 broken back legs.

What I'm Reading

• We Are All Guilty Here (currently listening)
• The First Time I Saw Him (next read) This is book 2. Read The Last Thing He Told Me first. Book 1 was an Apple TV series starring Jennifer Gardner. It was really good, and has a season 2 starting in February. I love seeing books that I read turned into movies and TV shows.
• Speaking of books that I have read, going to the big screen: The Housemaid did not disappoint! On a whim, I went to the local movie theater solo to watch it. It is set up for a 2nd movie, so hopefully the movie franchise will continue. I am looking forward to reading the 2nd book installment, The Housemaid's Secret.
• My sweet friend, Jennifer, from City Farmhouse, has her very first book published! I have received an advance copy. If you like a little romance along with home remodel and decorating taking place at the coast….you will love The Summer I Found You!!!! I am currently reading it as well. It will be released on April 7th, and you can preorder it.

This month, we are recreating a sweet Valentine's Day vignette featuring flowers and hearts inspired by Southern Home and Hospitality. These rosemary topiaries are a simple DIY that you can make.

This month's inspiration is quite lovely and romantic. Here is my takeaway from the elements.

A Simple Valentine’s Decor Approach

When it comes to Valentine’s Day decorating, I like to think of it as layering love into what you already have. Instead of swapping out everything, I start with a neutral base and build from there.

Our kitchen island is one of my favorite spots to style because it’s central, visible from multiple rooms, and easy to refresh seasonally. A wooden tray grounds the vignette and keeps everything contained, making it feel intentional without being fussy.

From there, I layered in pieces that feel romantic without being overly literal — textures, shapes, and soft colors.

To keep the vignette feeling timeless, I paired the heart sculpture with pieces I already love and use year-round:

Why This Style Works for Valentine’s Day

What I love most about this vignette is how effortless it feels. It doesn’t compete with the kitchen, doesn’t overwhelm the space, and doesn’t require storing bins of holiday decor. When the kids got married and moved out, we became empty nesters. I started downsizing our holiday decor. I didn't do a lot for Valentine's Day, so I started hunting for an affordable piece to complete this vignette. The sculpture is the only thing that I purchased for this project. 

This approach works especially well if:

• You love classic, traditional interiors

Decorating Tip: Keep It Flexible

One of my favorite things about styling vignettes like this is how easily they can be refreshed. When Valentine’s Day passes, I can remove the heart sculpture and ribbon, leaving the tray, greenery, and ginger jar in place for everyday styling.

Seasonal decorating doesn’t have to be complicated — sometimes, it’s just about swapping one meaningful piece and letting the rest stay beautifully familiar. One of my many rabbit statues could be placed here for spring and would be so sweet.

This Valentine’s decor vignette is a perfect example of how small touches can make a big impact. A single heart-inspired piece, layered thoughtfully with classic decor, creates a space that feels warm, inviting, and full of love — without ever feeling overdone.

Paired with the soft contrast of Simply White (OC-17) on trim and ceilings, the room feels grounded but never heavy. Cozy, but still classic.

It’s the kind of room where a guest places their suitcase down and immediately exhales. Where evenings end with a book left open on the nightstand and mornings begin slowly, coffee cup warming hands as sunlight spills across the floor. Nothing flashy. Nothing trendy. Just thoughtful, collected, and quietly welcoming.

That feeling—that sense of ease—is what this mood board is all about.

Why These Colors Work So Beautifully Together

Silhouette (AF-655) has incredible depth. It leans charcoal without going cold and feels especially rich when paired with warm textures like wood, linen, and vintage-inspired textiles. In a guest room, it creates intimacy and calm—perfect for rest.

Simply White (OC-17) balances everything out. It keeps the space from feeling too dark and adds that crisp, clean contrast that works so well with moody walls. Used on trim and ceilings, it brings lightness without stealing the show.

Simply White is actually the lovely, warm white that we have used throughout our home on all trim and woodwork.  You can see it on the walls in this guest room and Ashlyn's former bedroom. I wore this to church last Sunday. I bought this dress several years ago for a wedding where they wanted a more formal guest look. I didn't want to waste money on a dress that I'd get little to no wear out of. I bought this and wore it with silver sandals, a silver clutch (both from Ashlyn's wedding), and rhinestone jewelry. I felt dressed perfectly. Now I can wear the dress to church and more casually. I am wearing a medium dress from this brand. While my dress is no longer available. Homemade Lentil Soup

This soup was exactly what the week called for. Warm, hearty, and the kind of meal that feels nourishing and cozy in the best way—especially when the temperatures drop. It's a new to me recipe. It was easy and so flavorful. We got 2 meals out of it, plus a canister in the freezer. It's just the 2 of us.

I am making bread today in preparation for the storm! I use this recipe for the pair of Italian Sourdough Loaves.

I have been struggling with winter dough rising. The house is just too cool. Last night I placed the covered container in the half bath and closed the door. There is a heat vent in there. WOW, thanks for the idea, hubby. It had a great rise this morning. These loaves will have their 2nd rise in about 4 hours…..just in time to bake before the storm. 

Winter Storm Prep

When winter weather hits the Upstate, you just never know what you’re going to wake up to. We’ve learned the hard way that it’s best to prepare early—especially if power lines go down or roads become unsafe. Here’s what we’re buying and using this week to get ready for a possible outage:

Theo's Dog Jacket in XL

Theo may not be thrilled about wearing a coat… but it’s too cold to argue with it. He looked absolutely adorable, and I’m calling this a winter win for both of us. He's ready for potty time during the sleet and freezing rain. 

• Flashlights (and extra batteries)

• I got this set of candles last night!

• LED lanterns for the kitchen/living room. I am using these rechargeable lamps in 2 bathrooms. 

• HALO– This thing is amazing! We keep it in our car. It always has 100% charge when I take it out of the car to use during a storm. This is a must-have!
• Ryobi has wonderful rechargeable lights. I plan to add this one to our arsenal. 

• Battery-powered candles (because cozy matters ), I also use my Christmas candles. 

• Fully charged power banks for phones

• Extra extension cords and surge protectors

• small generator that actually operated our garage fridge and charged lots. 
• Charge all devices before storm…..don't forget your Kindle.

• Extra blankets in the family room and bedrooms. Also love this fleece one in a twin. 

• Cozy socks + layered pajamas for everyone

• Hand warmers (the little disposable packs)

• A good old-fashioned “pile everything on the bed” nap plan

• 32 Degrees makes great long underwear.

Food and Kitchen

• Easy meals that don’t require much cooking

• Shelf-stable snacks (crackers, peanut butter, granola bars)

• Bottled water + a few gallons of drinking water

• Soup ingredients (because soup fixes everything)

• Luckily, our stove has a gas cooktop. We are able to still use that in the event of a power outage. 

• I plan to try homemade stovetop popcorn. 
• We will also try grilling frozen pizzas. 
• We purchased a French Press to make coffee on the stove. You could also warm up water on the grill to use in a French press. 

What I'm Reading

• We Are All Guilty Here (currently listening)
• The First Time I Saw Him (next read) This is book 2. Read The Last Thing He Told Me first. Book 1 was an Apple TV series starring Jennifer Gardner. It was really good, and has a season 2 starting in February. I love seeing books that I read turned into movies and TV shows.
• Speaking of books that I have read, going to the big screen: The Housemaid did not disappoint! On a whim, I went to the local movie theater solo to watch it. It is set up for a 2nd movie, so hopefully the movie franchise will continue. I am looking forward to reading the 2nd book installment, The Housemaid's Secret.
• My sweet friend, Jennifer, from City Farmhouse, has her very first book published! I have received an advance copy. If you like a little romance along with home remodel and decorating taking place at the coast….you will love The Summer I Found You!!!! I am currently reading it as well. It will be released on April 7th, and you can preorder it.

What We've Bought

• I decided to add just a touch of Valentine's Day decor with these items: Gold Heart Hands, rattan hearts, and rattan heart ornaments.
• Cute lavender neck scarf
• Crocs for my husband that run a little more narrow. Not as wide as the traditional Crocs. He just needed these to go to the hot tub.
• TV mount that requires NO studs. It is fabulous and so easy to hang.
• Olay body wash and lotion
• I am going to try making popcorn on the stove in my Dutch oven. I'll report back! Lots of how-to videos on Instagram and TikTok.
• I am going to try the viral Halara jeans. They are affordable, and the reviews are fantastic. I got them in this style and this style. It takes them a bit to arrive. I am anxiously waiting! I already have 2 pairs of their black pants that I love to travel with. I wear these on the plane and these for sightseeing with sneakers and change shoes for dinner.
• We were having trouble hearing the front center channel from our family room stereo system while watching TV. I researched and was able to replace the one speaker! This is not a soundbar, but a center channel speaker for spoken audio.
• I juice a lot of citrus by hand. My hubby gave me this electric juicer for Christmas. It works so well!!!

What Caught My Eye

I really enjoy this European fashion account. I consider her classic with an edge. It's a great account to inspire you to put together outfits from your closet.

There’s something so satisfying about starting the new year with a simple thrift makeover that makes a big visual impact. After packing away my holiday décor, the kitchen counter vignette was feeling just a bit too empty. That’s when I remembered this little lamp I picked up years ago at the ReStore. It’s a great shape with a soft green-blue finish and brass accents — the perfect size for the kitchen counter — but the old shade was a bit sad: stained and yellowed with age.

So I gave it the DIY pleated fabric shade treatment using the same technique from this tutorial I shared last year.

Before: Good bones, tired shade

The lamp base is charming on its own, so I left it as is. I gave the brass accents a gentle clean with a damp cloth.

The shade was not so great! It is yellowed and stained. I can't beleive that I have used it like this for several years.

It's such a charming little lamp. 

Fabric Choices

I pulled out my stash of fabrics from a local shop, All About Fabrics. They are a large discount warehouse that is open to the public on set days each month. You can also order online. I am fortunate to be a short drive away.

All of the fabrics would work. I decided to go with the smaller neutral print. I felt like it would span the seasons.

Supplies You’ll Need for the Pleated Shade

• Lamp
• Shade
• Fabric
• Cutting Mat
• Rotary Cutter
• Scissors
• Sliding ruler with lip
• Tape measure
• Mini glue gun
• Mini glue sticks for fabric
• Set of bias tape makers
• Never Dull (if your brass needs cleaning)

A mini glue gun with low-temp glue is essential — it lets you apply a small bead of glue and be precise so your fabric stays neat. I ran out of glue towards the end and had to resort to my regular-size glue gun, which is hot! The low-temp mini is the way to go for this project.

How to Make a DIY Pleated Lamp Shade

Here’s the step-by-step process, adapted from the original tutorial and perfect for this smaller shade. Please refer to that for the full tutorial! Below is a snapshot of the project.

Prepare the Fabric

Start by squaring up your fabric. For a small shade like this, you’ll still want strips that are about 2″ wider than the length of the shade — this gives you plenty of fabric to fold and pleat.

Cut and Press Fabric Strips

Cut your fabric into uniform 2″ strips. Use the bias tape makers to fold the edges under as you iron — this gives you clean, finished strips with consistent edges. (See full tutorial HERE.)

Stack Your Prepared Strips

Once you’ve ironed the strips with crisp edges, stack them up and prepare to start attaching them to the shade. The number of strips will depend on your shade size, but expect to make more than you think — the pleats add lots of texture.

Glue Strips to the Shade

Starting at one seam, apply a small bead of glue along the top edge of the shade and press just the top edge of the fabric strip into place. Then glue the bottom edge of the strip to the shade’s bottom. Only glue top and bottom — don’t glue the middle of the strip.

Continue around the shade, slightly overlapping strips so the pleated pattern builds beautifully. Because the shade narrows slightly at the top, I placed strips a bit closer together at the top edge and a little farther apart at the bottom for an even look.

Trim Excess & Finish Edges

After all strips are glued, trim off any excess fabric along the bottom edge. Then measure around the top and bottom of your shade and make a long bias strip (in the same fabric) to finish both edges. Glue this strip around the top and bottom to hide edges and give a polished look.

Styling It Back Into the Kitchen

Once the shade was complete and the brass polished, I placed the lamp back onto my counter tray alongside a blue-and-white vase and a small bowl — it instantly felt cozy and intentional again. The floral neutral pleated shade softens the light and adds a beautiful layer of texture without overwhelming the space.

The little vignette feels complete now! This large wooden tray is perfect on the counter! I put appliance sliders on the bottom of it so that I can easily slide it out of the way for cleaning. The vase was picked up on a weekend trip in a consignment shop. The little oil was from a flea market in Amsterdam.

The decor on the front somewhat blocks the Alexa on the backside, along with the bowl that collects the small kitchen TV remotes.

I love the little pop of pattern that the shade has given this little area. I am glad that I went the neutral route with my fabric choice. Be sure to check out the complete tutorial with this lamp makeover post.

Final Thoughts

This tiny lamp refresh is a gentle reminder that big impact doesn’t have to mean big effort or expense. A thrift store find + a simple handmade shade = charm that feels custom and collected. If you’ve got a tired lamp shade in your stash, this pleated fabric option is worth the time.

A Little About the Story

This is something fun I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. With the help of AI, I wrote a cozy Christmas story set in a charming New England town called Willow Bay. I created the characters, the cottage setting, details, and the storyline—and in an effort to share it a little sooner, AI helped me bring it all together. Every image you see throughout this post is also AI-generated. I crafted the prompts myself and styled each scene with detailed direction. Like most AI projects, some things may be a little imperfect or delightfully wonky, but I hope you’ll get lost in the story and leave with a warm, cozy feeling as you scroll through the photos. You'll find a few recipes woven throughout the story. They link to recipes on the blog.

Arriving in Willow Bay

By the time Maggie turned off the coastal road and onto the lane that led to the rental cottage, snow was already dusting the stone walls and cedar shingles. The headlights swept over a low, storybook New England home—stone house, black shutters—and a plume of smoke curling from the chimney into the cold December sky.

Winston, her loyal Westie, popped his head up from the blanket on the passenger seat and gave a small, excited bark.

“I know,” Maggie murmured, smiling as she parked. “We made it, buddy. Willow Bay at Christmas.”

She sat for a moment just looking at the cottage. This town had held so many family memories—summers at the beach, evening walks along the harbor, her husband carrying folding chairs down to the shore while the kids ran ahead. Now winter had wrapped it in something quieter and more intimate. A wreath hung on the front door, candles glowed in the windows, and the air held that familiar mix of ocean brine and woodsmoke.

It was the first Christmas since Mark been gone. He had passed away last January, on an ordinary day that had changed everything.

Maggie took a steadying breath, opened the door, and stepped into the snowfall.

Inside, the cottage was warm and softly lit. Exposed wood beams stretched overhead, and a massive stone fireplace crackled with a welcoming fire. Winston trotted ahead, nose to the floor, while Maggie walked through the family room into the kitchen—cozy and worn, with a farmhouse table in the breakfast nook and copper pots hanging above a butcher-block island.

Maggie took the primary bedroom for herself. It was downstairs. She'd let all the kids do the stairs. As she dropped her bags and took in the lovely room, she couldn't help but think of Mark. She added one personal item to her nightstand: a framed photo of the kids on the Willow Bay pier ten summers ago. She wiped the tears away and made her way upstairs to check out the other bedrooms. 

More upstairs bedrooms waited for the people she loved most, her children:

Matt and his wife, Cleo.
Luke is freshly graduated with a business degree.
And Claire, her youngest, was driving up after her last exam.

The rooms were cozy and understated for Christmas—knit throws on each bed, evergreen sprigs in small vases, tiny wreaths hung with ribbon.

Matt and Cleo would love this cozy Christmas retreat. 

Luke will definitely be able to daydream about his life and the next steps for the new year.

Claire will catch up on her sleep after all the late-night study sessions for exams. I'm sure she will be chatting on the phone with this new boy she mentioned. 

Maggie unpacked groceries—lemons, gin, sparkling wine, fresh rosemary, cranberries—a reminder that she would be making their traditional Holiday French 75s for the first time without her husband. It was bittersweet but grounding.

The sound of tires on snow pulled her to the window.

“They’re here,” she whispered.

The Family Arrives

“Mom! We’re coming in with pastries and way too many bags,” Matt called as the door swung open.

He wrapped her in a hug that squeezed the breath from her lungs. Cleo followed, cheeks pink from the cold, carrying a bakery box.

“I brought the cinnamon rolls,” she announced. “The ones with too much icing.”

Maggie beamed. “My favorite daughter-in-law.”

“I’m your only daughter-in-law,” Cleo laughed.

Luke arrived next, arms full of wrapped gifts and looking both excited and uncertain about the new chapter following graduation. Claire was last, bursting through the door smelling of peppermint mocha and fresh notebooks.

The cottage filled instantly with conversation and warmth.

Christmas Eve Comfort

They ate takeout the first night—curled around the big farmhouse table, candles flickering, snow drifting outside the windows. Maggie watched her children talk and tease and laugh in the glow and felt a familiar ache. Joy and loss braided themselves together.

On Christmas Eve morning, the kitchen bustled with preparations. Maggie and Claire assembled the breakfast casserole and cheese grits for Christmas Morning breakfast. Winston hovered hopefully. Later, Maggie guided the kids through making their Holiday French 75s. This was always the holiday cocktail of choice in their family.

It was messy and full of laughter. The perfect kind of holiday chaos.

Matt gave her a leather journal:
“For when you start dreaming bigger.”

Cleo gifted a tiny gold compass necklace:
“So you always know where you’re going.”

Luke offered her an antique silver thimble:
“For the future innkeeper.”

And Claire knitted mismatched mittens:
“Because perfection is boring.”

After presents, they returned to the puzzle, slowly completing the snowy winter scene as carols played quietly in the background.

Preparing Christmas Dinner

By late afternoon, Maggie stood at the island preparing beef tenderloin, their traditional Christmas dinner. Alongside it would be bowls of garlic mashed potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, and the homemade sourdough rolls she had baked at home and brought in a tin.

“Dad always made the tenderloin,” Matt said gently.

“I know.”
Her voice wavered but held.
“We’ll make it together this year.”

And they did. Perfectly imperfect.

Dinner was full of warmth and emotion—stories of past holidays, hopes for the future, laughter that shook the chandelier above the dining table.

When dishes were cleared, Maggie finally spoke the thoughts she’d held close:
“I’ve been thinking about… buying a place here. Maybe an inn. Maybe a house to renovate. Something new. Something for me.”

They didn’t hesitate.

“Absolutely.”
“You’d be amazing.”
“We’ll help however you need.”
“Dad would want you to.”

It was everything she needed to hear.

A Walk Through Willow Bay

Just after twilight, they bundled up once more, stepping out into a world blanketed with fresh snow. Willow Bay glowed—garlands draped across porches, wreaths on shop doors, white lights strung between lampposts.

With hot cocoa in hand, they wandered down Main Street, admiring the displays and the soft shimmer of the harbor beyond.

The snow fell slowly, peacefully, wrapping the whole scene in quiet magic.

“This place…” Claire whispered.
“It feels like it already belongs to us.”

“It does,” Maggie said softly. “In its own way.”

They walked back to the cottage arm in arm, Winston trotting happily ahead, the lights of Willow Bay glowing behind them like a promise.

For the first time in a long time, Maggie felt not only at peace—
but hopeful.

A new chapter was waiting.
And she wouldn’t be walking into it alone.

This short story and the accompanying images were created with the help of AI as a creative tool, guided and styled by me. It’s been a fun and thoughtful experiment in storytelling and design.

I hope you've enjoyed this little “experiment.” It was a joy to create it. It was definitely a labor of love. It took quite some time to bring it to fruition. While AI has many negatives, I found this use a perfect example of where you can use it for creativity. I am not an AI expert. Perfect images are not easy with AI. If making ahead a batch, add all ingredients to a mason jar except the prosecco. Refrigerate and add 2 ounces to a shaker per glass, then top with Prosecco.

Ingredients

• 1 ounce gin
• 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
• 1/2 ounce ranberry simple syrup (recipe below)
• Champagne or prosecco, chilled
• Lemon twist, for garnish
• Fresh rosemary sprig or sugared cranberries (optional)

Cranberry Simple Syrup

• 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 cup water

Instructions

• Add the gin, lemon juice, and cranberry simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
• Shake until well chilled.
• Strain into a champagne flute or coupe glass.
• Top with chilled champagne or prosecco.
• Garnish with a lemon twist and a sprig of rosemary or a few sugared cranberries for a festive finish.

Cranberry Simple Syrup

• Combine cranberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan.
• Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes, until the cranberries burst and the syrup turns a deep ruby color.
• Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
• Strain out the solids and pour the syrup into a jar or bottle.
• Refrigerate for up to two weeks.
