Sometimes a thrift store find doesn’t need a dramatic makeover. It just needs a good cleaning, a little polish, and a few simple updates to bring it back to life.

That was definitely the case with this classic blue-and-white ginger jar lamp. For just $10, I brought home a lamp that already had everything I loved—the classic shape, blue-and-white porcelain, and a beautiful dark base. It simply needed a little attention.

Sometimes a really good piece is already there. You just have to recognize it.

I found this beauty for just $10 while out thrifting with my daughter, Ashlyn. The lamp itself was in wonderful condition, and I loved the classic blue and white design, dark wood base, and traditional ginger jar shape.

It didn't need to be transformed into something new.

It just needed a little love.

The $10 Thrift Store Find

This lamp came home with me after a fun day of thrifting with Ashlyn.

We started at her house and worked our way down Wade Hampton Boulevard toward Greer, stopping at thrift, vintage, and antique shops along the way. We had the best time and both came home with some fabulous finds.

I was actually the one who spotted this gorgeous blue and white ginger jar lamp first. I pulled it out for a closer look, and Ashlyn immediately said, in that jokingly way only a daughter can,

“Thanks so much for getting that down for me!”

Well, what's a mom to do?

Do you pull the finders keepers card, or graciously hand over the fabulous $10 lamp?

Ashlyn has recently started collecting blue and white for her home, so I did the motherly thing and let her have it. Ha!

I did have one stipulation: I was taking it home with me first so I could refresh it for this month's Thrift Store Decor Tour.

For only $10, it was such a great find. The classic ginger jar shape immediately caught my eye, and the blue and white design was beautiful. I also loved the contrast of the dark wood base.

Even better, once I got it home and checked it over, I discovered that the lamp was already in good, solid working condition.

There was no reason to completely make it over—or replace perfectly good electrical components.

It simply needed a good cleaning, a little polishing, a touch of gold to freshen up some worn metal, and a properly proportioned harp and lampshade.

Then it would be ready to head to Ashlyn's house and join her growing blue and white collection.

Supplies for This Ginger Jar Lamp Refresh

This is an easy project that doesn't require many supplies.

• Microfiber cleaning cloths
• The Original Bee's Wax
• Liquid Leaf in Classic Gold
• Small artist's brush
• Replacement lamp harp
• White pleated lampshade

If you enjoy thrifting for lamps, adjustable or assorted lamp harps are handy to have on hand. You'll be amazed at how much changing the harp height can improve the proportions of a lamp and shade.

Start with a Good Cleaning

The first thing I did was give the lamp a thorough cleaning.

Years of sitting around can leave a layer of dust and grime that makes an older piece look much worse than it actually is.

I wiped down the blue and white ceramic carefully with a microfiber cloth.

Once it was clean, I could really appreciate what good condition the original ceramic was in.

There was absolutely no reason to change it.

That's one of my favorite things about thrifting. I'm not looking for things simply because I can paint or completely make them over. I'm looking for pieces that have classic shapes and details that work with the collected style of our home.

Inspect a Thrifted Lamp Before Using It

Before using a secondhand lamp, take a good look at the electrical components.

Check the cord, plug, socket, and switch for obvious signs of damage or wear.

The electrical components on this lamp were in good, solid working condition, so I didn't replace them.

Why replace something that doesn't need replacing?

If you find an older lamp that does need rewiring, I've done that before and have a tutorial that walks you through the process.

Polish the Existing Finish

Next, I used The Original Bee's Wax to clean and polish the dark base.

I wasn't trying to make the base look brand new. I actually like a little age on vintage and thrifted pieces.

That's part of their charm.

The polish simply cleaned up the existing finish and brought back some of its richness and shine.

It's such a small thing, but once the base was cleaned and polished, the entire lamp already looked better.

Refresh the Worn Metal with Gold

The visible metal around the socket needed a little more attention.

The original finish was worn and dull, so I used a small artist's brush and Liquid Leaf in Classic Gold to freshen it up. Instead of taping the area with painter's tape, I just wedged an index card around the aged brass and painted with a paintbrush. I did 2 coats, drying between them.

This was purely cosmetic.

I wasn't trying to make all of the metal look perfectly new. I just wanted the worn area to look a little more polished.

The warm gold works beautifully with the blue and white porcelain and the dark base.

It took very little product and made a surprisingly nice difference.

Finding the Right Harp for the Lampshade

Now we get to the part that probably took me longer than cleaning and polishing the actual lamp!

The lampshade.

I tried several shades that I already had around the house, and some were too small while others completely overwhelmed the lamp.

I actually found a fabulous brown, floral pleated shade on Amazon. Sadly, it was too small. I ended up using it on another lamp that needed an updated shade.

Then there was the harp.

I switched harps, stood back, looked at the lamp, changed the harp again, stood back again…

You get the picture!

The harp is important because it determines exactly where your shade sits on the lamp.

If the harp is too tall, you'll see too much of the socket and hardware beneath the shade. If it's too short, the shade may sit too low and overwhelm the lamp base.

Don't assume that a lampshade is the wrong size until you've also considered whether the harp is the correct height.

That little adjustment can make a huge difference.

Choosing the White Pleated Lampshade

I ultimately went with this simple white pleated shade.

It measures approximately 14 inches across the bottom, 9.5 inches across the top, and 9.5 inches high. I picked it up at HomeGoods.

I love the pleating with the ginger jar.

It adds a bit of texture and traditional detail without competing with the beautiful pattern of the ceramic.

The crisp white also keeps the overall look fresh.

The Finished Ginger Jar Lamp

That's it!

No spray paint.

No major makeover.

No rewiring.

I simply cleaned the lamp, polished the base, refreshed a little of the worn metal with gold, added the appropriate harp, and finished it with a new pleated shade.

Sometimes the best makeover is knowing when not to make something over.

The original lamp was already beautiful.

It just needed a little attention.

Styling the Ginger Jar Lamp in Our Home

Before sending the lamp home with Ashlyn, I couldn't resist styling it in our home for a few photos.

I placed it on the painted cabinet beneath our large antique mirror, and wouldn't you know—it looked right at home!

The blue and white porcelain works beautifully with the dark cabinet and warm gold tones in this area. I stacked two oversized art books, Van Gogh and Monet, and topped them with a small framed landscape.

For a moment, I may have questioned my decision to let her have it. Ha!

But I love that Ashlyn is starting her own blue and white collection, and this $10 thrift store find is such a fun piece to add to it. She plans to use it in their foyer.

Decorating with Collected Pieces

The large mirror reflects our staircase gallery wall and adds another layer of collected art to the space.

I love rooms that feel as if they've evolved over time rather than being decorated all at once.

That's one of the reasons thrifted pieces work so well in our home.

They add character.

This little $10 lamp doesn't look like something I bought just to fill an empty spot. It looks like it belongs with pieces that we've collected over the years.

And that's exactly what I want.

The lamp is especially pretty in the evening when it's turned on.

The pleated shade gives off such a lovely glow, while the blue and white base still makes a statement.

Not bad for $10!

Don't Overlook Thrift Store Lamps

The next time you're browsing a thrift store, don't immediately dismiss a lamp because it's dirty, the metal looks worn, or it has an awful lampshade.

Look past those things and really examine the lamp itself.

Is the shape classic?

Is the ceramic or base in good condition?

Does it work with the colors and style you already love?

Is the electrical wiring in good working order?

Lampshades and harps are easy to change. A dull finish can often be cleaned and polished. Small cosmetic details can be refreshed without completely changing the character of the piece.

This ginger jar lamp is a perfect example.

It didn't need a makeover.

It just needed a refresh.

I'm ready for a change, but here in South Carolina, it's still very much summer outside. The last thing I want to do is pull out pumpkins and full-on fall decor when it's close to 100 degrees!

Instead, I've started making a few subtle changes around our home with warmer colors, rich textures, vintage books, candlelight, and collected pieces.

It's really just a little prelude to fall.

What is the Pinterest Challenge?

Each month, we are given either a topic or a photo to use as inspiration. Think of it just like saving a beautiful room on Pinterest or Instagram and then figuring out how to recreate the feeling of it in your own home.

Our fabulous host, Cindy from County Road 407, organizes our monthly Design Challenges. It's always fun to see how everyone interprets the exact same inspiration in completely different ways.

This month, our inspiration comes from Eleanor Rose Home and her cozy fall living room. I was immediately drawn to this sweet little vignette with its vintage books, candles, classical bust, warm wood, and simple natural elements.

My Takeaway from the Inspiration Photo

Whenever I recreate an inspiration photo, I don't try to copy it piece for piece. I look at the overall composition and make a mental list of the elements that catch my eye.

For this one, I noticed:

• Three candles
• One large horizontal book
• A grouping of vertical books with some of the spines showing
• A classical bust
• A small collection of natural objects
• Florals with a subtle fall feel
• A neutral table runner
• A vintage chest or cabinet as the foundation

From there, I shopped our home.

I didn't have one oversized horizontal book that gave me quite the same scale, so I stacked my Van Gogh and Monet books. Instead of the acorns in the inspiration, I filled a small urn with wine corks that I've collected.

That's the fun of an inspiration photo. You aren't trying to duplicate it. You're looking for ways to recreate the feeling with things that tell your own story.

Creating a Subtle Summer to Fall Transition

August always makes me crave a little change inside our home. I'm starting to think about fall, but I'm certainly not ready for pumpkins everywhere.

One of the easiest ways I've found to bridge the seasons is simply to warm up the color palette.

Look closely and there's really very little “fall decor” here.

The hydrangeas are soft and muted. The vintage books bring in deeper greens, rust, brown, and black. Amber glass and candlelight add warmth. Even the creamy stone finishes on the bust and urn help soften the blue and white that stays in our home year-round.

I didn't remove my blue and white lamp simply because fall is approaching. Instead, I surrounded it with warmer pieces. Plus, this little area helps to light the space into our home since we don't have a foyer to place furniture in with it being open in each direction.

That's a much more natural way for me to decorate seasonally.

Use Books to Add Instant Fall Color

Books are one of my favorite decorating tools.

The inspiration photo used a wonderful mix of old books, and I knew I wanted to recreate that feeling.

I pulled together books with black, green, blue, rust, and warm brown covers. I purposely turned some with the spines showing while allowing others to simply show their aged pages and covers.

There's nothing perfect about the arrangement, and that's exactly why I like it.

For the large horizontal book in the inspiration, I didn't have one book that was quite substantial enough. My oversized Van Gogh and Monet books stacked together gave me the height and visual weight I needed.

It's such a simple reminder to look at what you own differently. Two books worked just as well as the one oversized book in the inspiration.

Add Something Classical and Unexpected

The classical bust was probably the element in the inspiration photo that caught my eye first.

Luckily, I already had one!

I love the way a bust adds a bit of old-world character to a room. It feels collected and traditional without being overly formal, especially when you mix it with everyday things like books, flowers, and candles.

Rather than treating it like a precious object that needs to stand alone, I tucked mine right into the arrangement.

That mix of high and low, old and new, and serious and casual is what keeps traditional decorating from feeling stuffy.

Bring in Warmth with Candlelight

The three candles in the inspiration photo were another detail I wanted to repeat.

I used a combination of two different sized votive holders. Once lit, the warm glow immediately changes the feeling of the vignette.

This is probably one of the easiest summer-to-fall decorating tricks there is.

You don't have to change an entire room. Light a few candles, bring in a little amber glass, and suddenly the room starts to feel cozier.

I especially love the amber glass against the blue and white lamp. The combination lets me hold onto the lighter feeling of summer while introducing just enough warmth for the season ahead.

Decorate with Personal Collections

The inspiration photo included a little collection of acorns. I could have easily gone outside and gathered something similar, but the small urn filled with wine corks felt much more personal to our home.

I've saved the corks over time, and I love seeing them displayed rather than tucked away in a drawer.

They're neutral, natural, and have that same organic quality as the acorns without screaming fall.

It's also a good example of why I don't think you need to recreate every detail of an inspiration photo literally.

Use what makes sense for your home.

A bowl of pinecones, shells collected from vacations, old keys, matchbooks, wooden beads, seed pods, or another small collection could accomplish the same thing.

Let Florals Ease You into the Season

Hydrangeas are one of those flowers that transition beautifully from summer into fall.

Instead of using bright summer blooms, I went with these soft, faded hydrangeas. Their muted green and creamy tones feel appropriate right now but will work just as beautifully as we move further into fall.

They add softness to all of the books, stone, metal, and wood without introducing an obvious fall color palette.

And that's exactly what I wanted.

Later in the season, I can easily replace them with something richer or add a few branches from the yard. For now, they're just enough.

Keep Your Year-Round Favorites

Here's something I think is worth mentioning: you don't have to put away everything you love just because the season changes.

Blue and white is part of our home year-round.

Rather than removing this lamp and replacing it with something “fall,” I changed what surrounded it.

The warm books, amber glass, candlelight, aged gold mirror, and muted flowers completely change the way the blue and white feels.

I think that's one reason collected homes transition so easily from season to season. The foundation stays largely the same. We simply change a few layers.

Shop Your Home First

Most of this vignette came together with things I already owned.

Are you curious to know if there are any thrifted or consignment shop finds? The two urns, flower candlestick, mirror and lamp are all collected treasures.

That is always my favorite kind of decorating.

Sometimes we get so used to seeing an accessory in one particular place that we forget it can have an entirely different life somewhere else. Move your books. Bring a vase in from another room. Stack something that usually stands upright. Fill an urn with a collection you've had tucked away.

You may discover you don't need nearly as much new seasonal decor as you thought.

The original Eleanor Rose Home post also embraces decorating with pieces already owned or pulled from storage, along with vintage finds and natural elements. It's one of the things I loved about this month's inspiration.

A Collected Look for the Season Ahead

Stepping back, I love how this little area now hints at what's coming without rushing the season.

There isn't a pumpkin in sight.

Instead, it's the deeper colors, aged finishes, books, muted flowers, and glow of candlelight that make the room feel warmer.

And when the weather finally does cool down, I'll be able to build right onto this foundation rather than completely redecorating.

That feels much more like the way I want to decorate our home these days—slowly, seasonally, and with things we've collected and genuinely love.

This little rattan table and chair set is new to our home. It was previously at my husband's company's AirBNB lake house, and when they recently sold the house, this set was headed for the donation pile.

At the last minute, I decided to keep it.

I’ve always loved the shape of the table, the woven details, and the way the two chairs tuck neatly underneath. The rattan itself was still in good condition, so there really wasn’t any reason to paint it or make major changes.

The seat fabric, however, was another story!

The tropical palm print worked well at the lake, but it didn’t really work with the colors and collected style of our home. I already had a beautiful floral fabric that was a much better fit, so this became one of those wonderfully simple projects that made a surprisingly big difference.

I've seen these sets listed online from anywhere from $350 to $1,300.

We've been throwing around the idea of selling our home to drastically downsize. Then we'd buy a smaller home in town and a small lake house. So I am going to hold onto this set until we decide. I do plan to use this in the upstairs den, but at the present….it is my staging area for decor and clothes to sell and donate. It was not conducive to photos at this time…soon hopefully!

Supplies for This Rattan Furniture Refresh

This is an easy project that doesn’t require many supplies.

• Staple remover tool
• Scissors
• Fabric
• Staple gun
• Staples
• Murphy Cleaning Spray
• Cleaning rags
• Rummikub – because every little game table needs a good game!

Start with a Good Cleaning

Before doing anything with a refresh, it's goo to give it a good cleaning.

You will notice that I did this in reverse. The piece is dusted regularly, so I didn't do this before changing out the fabric. 

Rattan furniture has so many little crevices where dust likes to settle, especially around the wrapped joints and woven areas. I used Murphy cleaning spray and rags to clean the table and chairs, paying extra attention to those detailed areas.

I wasn’t trying to make the furniture look brand new. I actually like the variations in the finish and the bit of age that it has acquired over the years.

That’s part of its charm.

Once everything was clean, I could really see how pretty the original rattan still was. It confirmed my decision to leave the finish completely alone.

Plus, the Murphy spray restores a bit of the shine. 

Remove the Chair Seats

The round upholstered seats are attached to the chair frames from underneath, so they were easy to remove with a screwdriver.

Once the seats were off, I used a staple remover to take out the staples holding the old fabric in place.

If you’ve ever recovered a chair seat, you know that removing old staples is usually the least exciting part of the project! Thankfully, these seats are small, so it went fairly quickly.

I removed the old fabric but kept the existing seat and padding since both were still in good condition.

Cut the New Fabric

I laid each round seat on the new fabric and cut around it, leaving several inches of extra fabric all the way around.

You want enough fabric to pull comfortably around the underside of the seat and staple into place.

Since this fabric has a larger floral pattern, I also paid attention to the placement of the design before cutting. I wanted each seat to have a pretty section of the pattern centered on it.

This is a small detail, but it makes a big difference in the finished look.

Recover the Round Chair Seats

With the fabric cut, I centered the seat on the wrong side of the fabric and began stapling.

I like to start with a few staples on opposite sides of the seat, pulling the fabric snug as I work. Then I continue around the seat, alternating sides rather than finishing one section at a time.

This helps keep the fabric smooth and the pattern centered.

Because these seats are round, the fabric naturally creates little folds as you work your way around the edge. Just keep the folds neat on the underside and make sure the top remains smooth.

Once everything was secure, I trimmed away any excess fabric and reattached the seats to the chairs.

That was it!

A Simple Fabric Change Made Such a Difference

I’m so glad I didn’t donate this set.

The new blue floral fabric completely changed the feel of the chairs without changing what I already loved about the furniture.

The blue works beautifully with our home, while the reds, creams, and warm neutral tones in the pattern tie in with the wood floors and the natural color of the rattan.

It feels much more like us now.

And I especially love that I didn’t have to paint the rattan to make it work. Sometimes preserving the original finish and simply changing what feels dated is the better choice.

Giving Old Furniture a New Purpose

We’re currently using the set on our upstairs landing near the gallery wall.

It’s such a unique little table because the chairs tuck almost completely underneath when they aren’t being used. That makes it perfect for this spot where I didn’t want anything too large or visually heavy.

And it has already found its purpose as our little Rummikub table!

I love having a dedicated spot where we can pull out a game without having to clear off the dining table or kitchen island. The glass top is perfect for playing, and everything can tuck neatly away when we're finished.

What's funny is that we have to learn how to play it. I bought it a couple of months ago. This is a travel set. I plan to take it when we travel. I'm thinking long airport layovers instead of having our heads in our phones.

I like the little shelf underneath to place it when we are not playing.

Ignore that unpainted door in the backgound. It's so wild to see the old color versus the new white. It has taken me forever to work through the woodwork in our home. Doors and windows are not my favorite as you can see!

Before You Get Rid of an Older Piece…

Take another look at it.

Does the entire piece really need changing, or is there just one element keeping it from working in your home?

In this case, all this rattan set needed was a good cleaning and new fabric on two little chair seats. Now instead of being donated, it has a new home and a new purpose.

Those are some of my favorite kinds of projects—simple updates that allow us to use and enjoy what we already have.

And I have a feeling there will be quite a few games of Rummikub played right here!

Simple Layered Summer Tablescape with Collected Decor

Pam's tablescape is so lovely. Hers is created outside. The weather in Upstate, SC is unbearable outside right now for outside dining. It was even too hot outside Sunday evening to have appetizers and a cocktail with family. Not only are the temps so hot, but our humidity is off the charts. I created my look in our dining room for a family birthday celebration for my mom and son. I can't believe that I have a 30-year-old! It seems like yesterday that he was graduating from college.

Why I Love a Collected Summer Tablescape

One of my favorite ways to welcome the season is by refreshing our dining table with pieces I've collected over the years. Rather than buying a whole new set of dishes or following the latest decorating trend, I love mixing treasured finds with a few updated accessories to create a table that feels warm, inviting, and uniquely ours.

To me, a collected home tells a story. Every vintage plate, woven placemat, heirloom piece, or favorite thrifted find adds another layer of personality. When those pieces are thoughtfully combined with fresh flowers, soft linens, and natural textures, the result is a table that feels timeless instead of trendy.

This summer tablescape came together by layering blue and white dinnerware, woven placemats, patterned linens, cordless table lamps, and simple floral arrangements. Nothing is overly formal or complicated, yet each layer adds depth and interest. It's proof that beautiful entertaining doesn't require purchasing an entire matching collection. In fact, the lovely floral set of 8 salad plates was a thrift store find! I love hunting for thrifted salad plates that will work with my dinner plates. It's ok to mix and match those.

The Layers That Make This Table Feel Timeless

One of the easiest ways to create a beautiful table is by thinking in layers. Just as you would layer pillows on a sofa or artwork on a gallery wall, layering a tablescape adds warmth, texture, and personality. The goal isn't perfection—it's creating a table that feels welcoming and collected.

I always begin with a neutral foundation. For this table, woven placemats add natural texture while helping define each place setting. A blue patterned table runner anchors the centerpiece without hiding the beauty of the wood table.

Here is a little secret about the table runner. It's NOT a table runner. It's actually my new tablecloth that I purchased on the most recent Amazon sale. It's not long enough when we extend this table with a leaf. So I folded it into a runner. It will take time for me to build up a tablecloth collection to fit the “new” to us table when extended for 10. 

Next comes the dinnerware. Instead of using perfectly matched pieces, I layered vintage floral salad plates over blue dinner plates for a look that's classic yet relaxed. Mixing patterns and finishes keeps the table from feeling too formal while giving each place setting its own charm. It was the perfect way to give a nod to the inspiration photo.

Linens are another opportunity to add softness and color. The patterned napkins tie in beautifully with the blue and white palette while adding another layer of interest. Again, I am mixing block print patterns, and it works. This is my older Southern Living silverware. It is so pretty and classic. I save it for nice meals. The etched green glassware completes each setting without competing for attention.

Finally, I always finish with lighting and fresh flowers. Brass cordless table lamps cast a warm glow that makes even a casual meal feel special, while small arrangements of hydrangeas and seasonal blooms bring life and color to the table without blocking conversation. I created the floral look with glass vases and grocery store flowers from Trader Joe's. The hydrangeas are from our gardens.

Mixing Vintage and New Pieces

One thing you'll rarely find in my home is a room filled with everything bought at the same time. I love the character that comes from mixing older pieces with newer finds. To me, that's what makes a home feel collected instead of decorated.

Many of the pieces on this table have been with me for years, while others are newer additions that simply fit the look I love. I never worry about whether everything matches perfectly. If the colors, textures, and overall feeling work together, that's all that matters.

I've found that vintage china, thrifted treasures, and family heirlooms have a way of bringing warmth and personality that brand-new pieces often can't. Pair them with updated linens, woven placemats, or cordless table lamps, and suddenly those older pieces feel fresh again.

If you're just starting your own collection, don't feel like you need to buy everything at once. The best tables are gathered over time. Keep an eye out while you're thrifting, visiting antique shops, Facebook Marketplace, or even shopping your own cabinets. You might be surprised by how beautifully pieces from different seasons and different stages of life come together.

Creating a Simple Summer Centerpiece

When it comes to centerpieces, I've learned that simple is almost always better. I want guests to be able to see one another across the table, so I keep everything low and relaxed. A few small arrangements are much easier to work with than one large bouquet, and they create a beautiful look without feeling fussy.

For this table, I filled several small containers with blue and Limelight hydrangeas, soft green blooms, and a few pink flowers for a touch of contrast. Grouping them down the center of the table gives the arrangement movement while allowing each one to shine on its own.

One of my favorite additions is the pair of cordless table lamps. They add such a warm, inviting glow and make the table feel cozy, whether we're enjoying a leisurely Sunday lunch or gathering with friends for dinner. I find myself reaching for them again and again because they're both beautiful and practical.

One suprise that my mother noticed was how I used her Grandmother's green depression glass dessert bowls as a votive candle holder. Since I was incorporating the more modern cordless lamps, I just added 2 real candles. 

Blue and White Details for Summer

If you've followed me for a while, you probably know that I never get tired of decorating with blue and white. It's a classic combination that feels fresh in every season, but there's something especially fitting about it during the summer months. The soft blues remind me of clear skies and coastal getaways, while the crisp white keeps everything feeling light and airy.

For this tablescape, the blue and white pieces help tie everything together without making the table feel too coordinated. The patterned table runner, layered dinnerware, and etched green glassware all complement one another while still allowing each piece to have its own personality. That's one of the reasons I love decorating with a collected approach—nothing has to be part of a matching set to create a cohesive look.

Learn how to make creamy piña coladas in an ice cream maker with pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and white rum. Perfect for summer!

If you've ever enjoyed a frozen piña colada while on vacation and wished you could recreate that tropical magic at home, you're in the right place! After returning from Puerto Rico, I couldn't stop thinking about those creamy, icy piña coladas we enjoyed while strolling the colorful streets of Old San Juan. That inspired me to experiment with making them in my 2-quart Cuisinart ice cream maker.

I did a lot of reading and research in my quest to replicate the famous Barrachina frozen drink. I actually experimented 3 times with ingredients before I felt like it was perfected! That's why you may notice some different ingredients in the photos. The recipe contains my favorite combo! The only thing missing from my drink is a little paper umbrella.

The best part? You make the frozen pineapple-coconut base ahead of time and simply add the rum when you're ready to serve. It's perfect for entertaining because guests can enjoy a cocktail whenever they're ready, and you can even serve the base as a delicious non-alcoholic treat for kids or anyone skipping the spirits.

Frozen Piña Colada Base

• 1- 22-ounce Coco Real Gourmet Cream of Coconut
• 1- 46-ounce can of Dole 100% Pineapple Juice
• 1 cup water

For Each Cocktail

This is based on the 13 ounce cocktail glasses that I used. I love these glasses! We use them for water, cocktails, and desserts.

• ¾ to 1 cup frozen piña colada base
• 1½ to 2 ounces white rum
• Pineapple wedges, maraschino cherries, or fresh pineapple leaves for garnish if you are feeling fancy

Equipment

• 2-quart Cuisinart ice cream maker
• Large mixing bowl or pitcher
• Whisk
• Freezer-safe container with lid
• ice cream scoop
• chubby straws
• exact cocktail glasses
• jigger

Make the Base

In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and water until completely smooth.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the best flavor.

Churn

Pour the chilled mixture into your frozen ice cream maker bowl. Churn according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually 20–30 minutes, until it reaches the consistency of soft-serve ice cream.

Depending on your machine, you may need to churn the mixture in two batches. I do 2 batches with my 2-quart Cuisinart ice cream churn. 

VERY IMPORTANT! If you are doing 2 batches with the Cuisinart…..you must refreeze the metal insert for 24 hours before using again. Trust me on this. If you don't, it will not freeze it. 

Transfer the finished mixture to a freezer-safe container and freeze for several hours until firm or overnight. 

Serve

Pour 1-1/2 to 2 ounces of white rum into your glass.

Scoop several scoops of the frozen base into a glass. 

Place a chubby straw in the glass. Serve to your guests. They will stir with the straw to blend as they drink. Trim the straws with scissors if they are too long for your glass.

Tips for the Best Piña Coladas

• Chill the mixture before churning for the creamiest texture.
• Use a good-quality cream of coconut—not coconut milk or coconut cream.
• Add the rum only when serving. Alcohol lowers the freezing point and keeps the mixture from freezing properly.
• For a thicker drink, use more frozen base. For a thinner, more sippable cocktail, add a splash of pineapple juice.
• Make the base a day ahead for stress-free entertaining.

Instructions

Make the Base

  Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the best flavor.

• Pour the chilled mixture into your frozen ice cream maker bowl. Churn according to the manufacturer's instructions, usually 20–30 minutes, until it reaches the consistency of soft-serve ice cream.

Very important!!! My ice cream maker is 2 quart, so I divided the mixture and churned 1/2 at a time. If using my Cuisinart churn, you must refreeze the insert at least 24 hours for the best result. Trust me on this! If you don't….It will NOT freeze. Just return the unused base to the fridge overnight.

Serve

• Pour the 1-1/2 to 2 ounces of white rum into your glass.
• Using an ice cream scoop, scoop the frozen base into a glass.
• Give the guest a large straw. They will stir to blend as they drink. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cherry, and enjoy!
I use chubby straws. They are easier to drink thick drinks through. If they are too long, just cut off the ends to the desired lenght.
The base keeps well to enjoy a drink as desired.
These are also wonderful with no alcohol!

Saturdays on the Porch

Happy Saturday, friends! It's been a fairly quiet week around Our Southern Home, which honestly felt a little nice after all of our recent travels and activity. Most of my time has been spent at home, checking things off the never-ending to-do list and enjoying some simple everyday moments.

One of the highlights of my week was spending Tuesday with Phoebe. At 27 months old, she has quite the personality and keeps us laughing. It's so much fun watching her grow and seeing the world through her eyes. We packed a lot into our day together, and as always, I was exhausted in the best possible way when she headed home.

The primary bathroom makeover continues to inch along. The new quartzite countertops were installed last week, and we've had the plumber/electrician here for the last couple of days reconnecting our faucets and swapping out the old off-white outlets and switch plates for fresh white ones. Progress always seems slow in the middle of a project, but it's definitely coming together. The biggest decision left is wallpaper. If you've followed me for any length of time, you know that's not a choice I take lightly! My goal is to dig into samples and make a final decision next week.

Last Sunday's family lunch was especially enjoyable, and it inspired a new weekly series that I'm excited to share soon. I'll be featuring our Sunday lunch menu, recipes, and tablescape each week. Family meals around the table have always been important to us, and I think you'll enjoy seeing what we're serving.

I also made it back to my morning walks this week for the first time since vacation. I've really missed that quiet hour and a half to myself. There's something so peaceful about starting the day with a walk and a good audiobook. The only challenge this time of year is beating the heat. Every week seems to require an earlier start time, but it's worth it to enjoy those cooler morning temperatures before a South Carolina summer settles in for the day.

This blue and white striped linen shirt dress has quickly become one of my most versatile summer pieces. I'm wearing a size small, and I love how effortlessly it works for everyday wear, travel, and vacation days. It can be worn loose as shown here, belted to create a more defined silhouette, or unbuttoned over a swimsuit as a chic beach or pool cover-up. The breathable linen fabric keeps you cool in the summer heat while the classic stripes give it a timeless look that you'll reach for year after year.

A Closet Favorite That Keeps Hanging Around

This dress is proof that you don't always need something new. I bought it about four years ago, and it's still one of my favorite summer throw-on-and-go dresses. It was an inexpensive purchase in a small French village. The relaxed fit makes it comfortable for errands and everyday wear, while the pretty print and colorful necklace make it feel a little more special than a basic tee and shorts. If you've been around here for a while, you've probably seen this dress before—and that tells you just how much I love it!

Move over scarves—beaded necklaces are having a moment in my closet! I've been collecting colorful styles lately, and they have become my favorite way to refresh older outfits. Whether paired with a simple linen dress, a classic button-down, or a basic tee, they instantly make an outfit feel more current and intentional. Amazon has become my go-to source for affordable options, so I can add a little color and fun without a major investment.

I've actually had this black gauze dress from Quince for several years now, which probably tells you how much I love it. I'm wearing a size small, and it remains one of my favorite warm-weather dresses. The gauze fabric is lightweight, breezy, and comfortable on even the hottest summer days. I can dress it up with jewelry and sandals for dinner out or keep it casual with sneakers for errands and everyday life. It's one of those tried-and-true pieces that never seems to go out of style and always feels just right when I put it on.

My daughter shared this magnetic necklace clasp with me. It comes with one for 2 necklaces and one for 3. I've only used the 2 one and just add the beads on top. It makes layering necklaces so much easier.

Quince Blue & White Stripe Gauze Dress

If this dress looks familiar, it's because it's essentially the striped version of my beloved black Quince gauze dress. I ordered this one as a new addition for summer and absolutely loved the blue and white stripes. Unfortunately, the fit wasn't quite the same. I ordered my usual size small, but this colorway is lined, and I found it fit noticeably differently from my black dress. It felt a bit more fitted everywhere than I prefer. Reluctantly, I sent it back and have added myself to the waitlist for a medium. I'm hoping it comes back in stock because the fabric, style, and classic stripes are exactly what I was looking for this season.

In the Kitchen

Zucchini Pasta

This is the second time that I have made this pasta. We love it! I divide it in 1/2 for the 2 of us and still have enough leftovers for a side one night. This recipe is for when you want to possibly hide the zucchini. Ha, ha! Not the case for us, but would be good with kids. You use the grated zuchini to make a sauce. I just threw together some spices with olive oil, lemon ,and champagne vinegar to make a marinade for the grilled chicken. It was great! 

Here is the leftover pasta with some pork tenderloin and corn on the cob.

I had some chorizo in the freezer, so I searched for a recipe to use it up. I came across this one-dish meal. It was pretty good, but honestly, I am not sure I'd make it again with chorizo. I did have to add more chicken broth to it. I'd probably do some ground turkey and bump up the spices. It was quite simple and inexpensive. I had most of the ingredients on hand.

• The First Time I Saw Him (next read) This is book 2. Read The Last Thing He Told Me first. Book 1 was an Apple TV series starring Jennifer Gardner. It was really good, and has a season 2 starting in February. I love seeing books that I read turned into movies and TV shows.
• Speaking of books that I have read, going to the big screen: The Housemaid did not disappoint! On a whim, I went to the local movie theater solo to watch it. It is set up for a 2nd movie, so hopefully the movie franchise will continue. I have also now read the 2nd book installment, The Housemaid's Secret. The Housemaid's Wedding is a short story that you would read third in the series. I listened to it in Libby. It's like 1.5 hours so don't waste an Audible credit on it. Check out at the library.
• My sweet friend, Jennifer, from City Farmhouse, has her very first book published! I have received an advance copy. If you like a little romance along with home remodel and decorating taking place at the coast….you will love The Summer I Found You!!!! I am currently reading it as well. It was my daily read in Puerto Rico, watching the sunrise, and by the pool.

What We've Bought

• I splurged on this white linen vest. It was on sale, and I ordered a size 8.
• I ordered these under-sink mats for the primary bath. They are due to arrive today.
• I am tired of digging for cable to charge things. A lot of electronics have gone to the USB-C style. I ordered this charger with 4 cords that pull out from it. I also ordered a short micro-USB for items like my old Kindle. It's due to arrive today.
• Theo got a new rolling dog food storage container.
• My husband just got his new expandable 24-inch suitcase in Navy from Quince. It is really pretty!
• He also ordered these men's linen pants.

Well, friends, that's a wrap on another week around Our Southern Home. As I get older, I'm finding that it's often the simple weeks that end up being the sweetest—the ones filled with family meals, walks around the neighborhood, progress on home projects, and ordinary days spent at home.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the bathroom comes together over the next few weeks and finally making a wallpaper decision. I'll be sure to keep you posted on that adventure! I'm also excited to launch the new Sunday lunch series. Gathering around the table with family is one of my favorite traditions, and it will be fun to share those menus, recipes, and tablescapes with you each week.

Saturdays on the Porch

Well, friends, it appears I accidentally took a rather extended break from Saturdays on the Porch! My last edition was back in February, and let's just say life got busy. Between family time, spring projects, travel planning, and everyday life, the weeks slipped by much faster than I intended.

As I pulled together photos for this post, I quickly realized there are a lot more fashion snapshots than usual. Apparently, while I wasn't writing Saturdays on the Porch, I was getting dressed and taking mirror selfies! So this edition is a little heavier on style inspiration, but don't worry—there are still plenty of delicious meals, home updates, and favorite finds sprinkled throughout.

The Family Room

One of the biggest happenings around here recently was the arrival of our new family room furniture from Havertys. In what can only be described as perfect timing, I listed our existing sofa and loveseat on Facebook Marketplace back at the end of April, and they sold the very same day! Even better, the buyers picked everything up the night before the new furniture was scheduled to arrive. Talk about a smooth transition. There wasn't a moment of wondering where we'd put the old furniture or how we'd make room for the new pieces. Sometimes things just work out exactly as planned. The new furniture has given the room a fresh update while still fitting the classic, comfortable style that makes our house feel like home. I can't wait to share more once I finish styling the space.

This was a late in the day, quick cell phone snap, the day it came in.

Primary Bath

We've been working very slowly on a mini makeover of our 21-year-old primary bathroom. We aren't doing a full renovation, but rather updating the elements that will make the biggest impact. The old wallpaper has been removed, the walls have received a fresh coat of paint, and our beautiful new quartzite countertops were installed just last week, along with new sinks. We decided to keep our existing faucets since they're still in great shape, but I ordered fresh brass drains to coordinate with the new look. Those should arrive next week, and I'm very much looking forward to having a fully functioning sink plumbing again! At the moment, the biggest decision left is wallpaper. If you've been around here for a while, you know that's no small decision. Once I settle on the perfect paper, all that remains is a little decorating and styling. It's already looking so much brighter and fresher, and I can't wait to share the finished space with you.

More Around Our Home

One of the best changes we've made recently was bringing in our “new-to-us” dining table. While I loved our previous table, this one is a much better fit for the way we actually live and gather. With family dinners, Sunday lunches, and holiday meals, we needed a table that could comfortably accommodate everyone. It's amazing how one furniture change can make a room function so much better. Plus, I love the warmth and character it brings to the dining room.

I rarely show the bar corner of the dining room, and it's becoming one of my favorite little vignettes in the house. This collected space combines a few favorite pieces along with practical storage for entertaining. It's proof that even a small corner can add charm, personality, and function to a room. I especially enjoy decorating this area seasonally with flowers, greenery, and a few favorite accessories. Notice my favorite little rechargeable lamp.

The coffee table is often the hardest-working surface in our family room. It's where books, remotes, drinks, flowers, and occasionally a sleeping cat all seem to gather. It's also Phoebe's favorite spot to color and play with her stickers. I've been keeping the styling simple lately with a mix of books, collected accessories, and fresh greenery. I find that a coffee table feels most inviting when it's beautiful but still practical enough for everyday life. After all, this room is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. I especially love how the peonies from the garden are showing off.

The Look

One of my favorite things about getting dressed these days is creating a wardrobe that feels effortless, timeless, and truly me. I've been focusing on versatile pieces that mix and match beautifully, work for everyday life, and still feel polished whether I'm heading out for church, running errands, on a date night, or traveling.

Linen, soft knits, classic stripes, comfortable denim, and a great scarf are staples that never let me down. The recent outfits are a collection of recent favorites that have been on repeat in my closet. You'll find all of the sources linked below.

Neutral Batwing Sweater & Denim

This soft, neutral sweater has quickly become a favorite. The relaxed batwing silhouette drapes beautifully while still looking polished. Paired with straight-leg denim and classic ballet flats, it's an easy outfit that works for everything from casual to dressed up. I am wearing a small. Jeans and shoes are older, but I've linked similar ones.

Striped Cardigan & Black Wide-Leg Pants

You can't go wrong with black and white. This striped cardigan feels timeless and chic, while the wide-leg pants keep the look comfortable and modern. I added simple accessories for an effortless look that feels put together without trying too hard. I also own this cardigan in white. I've had them for a couple of years, and they wash well. I wear the white ALL the time! My favorite is buttoned up like this. I am wearing a size small. It is slightly shorter in length, which I like best on me.

The linen pants are several years old from Sam's Club, but Quince linen is even better! It's the kind of outfit I find myself reaching for repeatedly for movie theaters and airplane travel. 

Linen Blazer & Silk Scarf

A lightweight linen blazer instantly elevates even the simplest outfit. I paired mine with denim, a white knit top, and my favorite silk scarf for a classic French-inspired look. The scarf adds just the right touch of color and personality. Shop the entire look.

Navy Linen Dress & Printed Kimono

This outfit combines two summer favorites: a simple linen dress and a lightweight printed topper. The kimono adds movement, color, and interest while still keeping the overall look easy and relaxed. I am wearing a medium in the dress. I have the sandals in 2 colors, and they are true to size. The kimono is no longer available.

Navy Linen Tank Dress

Sometimes simplicity wins. This navy linen dress is one of those pieces I reach for again and again. It's comfortable, flattering, and serves as the perfect blank canvas for jewelry, scarves, or lightweight layers. This necklace is a go-to for me for summer with its lean to a coastal vibe.

Blue and White Stripe Shirt & White Denim

A striped button-down shirt is one of the hardest-working pieces in my closet. Paired with white denim and neutral loafers, it creates a crisp, classic look that never goes out of style. I am wearing a size medium in the Quince button-down. Paired with a pop of green with the Amazon beaded necklace.

White Popover & Relaxed Black Pants

This combination feels modern, comfortable, and sophisticated. An oversized white shirt paired with relaxed black pants creates a polished outfit that's perfect for dinner out, travel days, or casual entertaining. I am wearing an 8 in the Ruti pants. This is the most expensive pair of pants that I have EVER purchased. They are worth every penny! I get compliments all the time. I also wore them all over Spain and Portugal.

Blue and White Floral Dress

This floral dress immediately caught my eye a couple of years ago. I bought it to wear to my DIL's baby shower that I hosted. The print feels timeless and feminine, and it's one of those easy dresses that requires very little styling. Just add simple sandals and a few accessories, and you're ready for brunch, church, or a summer gathering. I also wear it belted and have worn it with sneakers. It's generously sized. I am in a small. Anthropologie carries this dress all year long and just changes the patterns and colors.

Blue Chico's Shirt Dress

A shirt dress is several years old. This blue Chico's version is comfortable, flattering, and polished enough for many occasions. It is a Tencel fabric and is no longer available. I love pieces that feel put together with minimal effort. Chico's is always a win for dresses!

Beige Cardigan & Brown Ruti Pants

This outfit combines two of my favorite neutrals. The relaxed fit of the Ruti pants paired with a soft cardigan creates an elevated casual look that's comfortable without sacrificing style. The silk scarf adds just enough personality and color. Size small in sweater and 8 regular in pants.

Cream Lounge Set

I am always on the lookout for comfortable pieces that still look polished, especially for travel days and working from home. This cream lounge set checks all the boxes. It's cozy, flattering, and looks far more expensive than it is. I am wearing a size medium.

White Gauze Top & Black Linen Pants

You can never go wrong with black and white. This gauze top is lightweight and airy, while the black linen pants add a relaxed sophistication. The top was a splurge several years ago and so worth it! I wear it weekly. The linen pants are several years old from Sam's Club, but Quince linen is even better! It's the kind of outfit I find myself reaching for repeatedly during warmer months. The multi-strand turquoise necklace really elevates the entire look!

Amazon Gauze Robe

Of course, not every favorite look involves leaving the house. Sometimes the best pieces are the ones that make everyday moments feel a little more special.

This gauze robe has become one of my favorite little luxuries at home. It's lightweight, breathable, and incredibly soft—perfect for slow mornings with coffee on the porch or winding down in the evening. The relaxed fit feels comfortable without being bulky, and the gauze fabric gives it that effortless spa-like feel. If you're looking for a robe that works year-round, this one is definitely worth a look. It was a gift for Mother's Day, and I love it!

In the Kitchen

The melting tomatoes salmon recipe has been on repeat in our home for some time. I thought I'd share it again in case you have planted cherry or grape tomatoes.

This salad was a very happy creation! I love playing around with salads and pastas. I've been making a homemade champagne vinegrette that I must turn into a recipe for y'all. We chopped up some rotisserie chicken from Sam's Club and added a little crumbled bacon. The fun surprise was that I cubed a butternut squash and roasted it in the air fryer. It was so good and filling!

This pork tenderloin is always a hit with the family. I season it and have my husband sear it on the Blackstone (no mess on the stove), then finish it off in the oven. It is baked with lemon, butter, and powdered ranch dressing powder. The sauce is so good!!! It's another that I plan to work on sharing on the blog.

What We've Bought

• We purchased this coffee keeper when we returned from Puerto Rico. It holds the entire 2-pound bag of beans that we brought home. It comes in several sizes and colors. We have the 39oz size.
• I also purchased these really small bottles for all the beach glass and mini shells that I found.
• I didn't know there was such a thing, but you can find almost anything on Amazon these days. I bought this set of travel floats to take to Puerto Rico with us. We used them daily in the pool. They are super easy to inflate and deflate. They folded flat in the bottom of our suitcase.
• I needed a new nail file. This one has done a great job of filing my nails and never leaves them jagged. It even has a cover for it.
• I finally found the perfect claw clip for my finer hair. It hold my hair all day and never slips! I need to get more colors now.
• If you wear glasses or even sunglasses, you need a box of these cleaning wipes. I take a handful when traveling and use them almost daily. They also work to clean phone and computer screens.
• I purchased a set of these gloves in a size medium with the 100 pack (50 pairs). They are great for cooking, cleaning, and crafting.
• I've finally found the perfect hand cream. I have it by the bed and use it before going to sleep.

Phoebe has graduated to some toddler pieces. She adores the Bluey set and mug that I got her. She can see them both HERE.

I bought this for transporting casseroles, but I've been using it a lot at home when I need to keep multiple dishes warm when prepping for Sunday lunches. It was wonderful for keeping a casserole warm for a bit.

Well, friends, I think that finally gets us caught up after my little Saturdays on the Porch hiatus! Looking through these photos reminded me just how much life has happened over the past few months—from family celebrations and home projects to outfit finds, good meals, and all the everyday moments in between. It's often the simple things that end up making the sweetest memories.

There is just something so satisfying about a quick thrift store project with major payoff. Honestly, those are my favorite kinds of makeovers these days! This simple wall art refresh took maybe five minutes per frame, completely transformed the look of our dining room, and cost very little thanks to inexpensive canvas prints from Amazon.

The best part? I already had the frames.

I purchased this art back in 2013 from the thrift store. After a while, I just hung them as I bought them knowng that I would eventually do something different. I'd say it took a while change them!! I loved them for many years, but lately they just felt a bit too busy and formal for the direction our dining room is taking. Plus the art was just too small to make notice.

Here is a very old photo before when we had our previous dining room set. We rescued the antique armoire from my husband's grandparent's home that was being torn down. That's why the sconces look a bit more crowded with the art. The armoire is massive! We are lucky it even fit between the sconces. You can read a bit about the story HERE.

I wanted something softer, moodier, and a little more collected looking.

The answer ended up being these affordable European landscape canvas prints that look remarkably like vintage oil paintings.

The Before

I still think the original frames are gorgeous. The gold detailing and classic shape feel timeless and collected which is exactly why I held onto them for so long.

But the old artwork just wasn’t working with the room anymore. Sometimes it’s not that something is “bad.” Your style simply evolves over time.

And honestly? That is one reason I love decorating with thrift store finds. They give you the freedom to experiment and change things up without guilt.

The original prints had a very ornate European café vibe with lots of movement and color. While beautiful, they started feeling visually lost in the room.

The new landscapes feel quieter, moodier, and much more in line with the relaxed European-inspired look I’ve been gravitating toward lately.

How-To: The Secret to This 5-Minute Makeover

This project could not have been easier.
The original framed prints had paper backs secured with staples. I simply used a craft knife to carefully cut through the backing paper and remove the old artwork.

Once the frames were open, I slipped in the new canvas landscape prints.

I left the original art and glass behind the new canvas art so that it would give it heft and fill up the space. Otherwise, I would have to mount them to some sort of board. So the original art piece with matting is still usable.

I taped the backing back into place.

That’s it.

No paint. No sanding. No complicated DIY steps.

Just a quick art swap with a huge visual impact.

Why Canvas Prints Make Such a Difference

One thing that really elevated this project was using canvas-style prints instead of standard paper prints. You will flip when you see how inexpensive this art is!!!

The texture gives them the appearance of vintage oil paintings which instantly makes the art feel more expensive and collected. The soft landscapes work beautifully with the warm wood tones in our dining room and pair so well with the antique-inspired gold frames.

It is amazing how much the right artwork can completely shift the feeling of a space.

These landscapes immediately brought a calmer, more refined look to the room.

Affordable European-Inspired Art from Amazon

You all know I love a high-end look without the high-end price tag.

The landscape prints were incredibly affordable (actually cheap!!) from Amazon, and I was honestly shocked by how beautiful they looked in person. The colors are soft and muted with that vintage European feel I’m always drawn to.

Because they are printed on canvas, they already have that rich texture that helps them resemble original artwork.

This is one of my favorite tricks for creating a collected home without spending a fortune.

A Little Dining Room Sneak Peek

You may also notice a few glimpses of our dining room in these photos including our “new to us” dining table!

I am currently working on a full dining room tour post where I’ll share all of the details, sources, and updates throughout the room. This little art makeover ended up being the finishing touch that tied everything together.

And of course, Cleo insisted on supervising the entire photo session. She clearly believes every decorating project requires feline approval.

Final Thoughts

I truly believe small changes can completely refresh a room.

This easy thrift store frame makeover only took a few minutes, but the new artwork completely transformed the feel of our dining room. The updated landscapes feel timeless, cozy, and perfectly layered with the traditional collected style I love most.

Never overlook old frames at thrift stores. Sometimes all they need is a fresh piece of art to feel brand new again.

And if you already have frames at home that no longer fit your style, consider giving them a second—or even third—life with new artwork. It is such an easy and affordable way to update your home.

There is just something about a good thrift store find that gets me every time—especially when it has great bones and just needs a little love.

This piano bench was one of those pieces. The shape was classic, the size was perfect, but the finish and fabric were definitely ready for an update. With a little paint and some beautiful floral fabric, it turned into a piece that feels right at home in our space.

This is a maintenance card on the inside of the piano bench. It's either 1958 or 68. 

Today, I’m sharing exactly how I gave this thrifted piano bench a fresh new look.

The Before: A Thrift Store Piano Bench

The bench had a solid structure, which is always the first thing I look for when thrifting furniture. The finish was no longer my style, and the fabric was worn, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a little time and effort.

This is actually the second “new” life for this thrift store find. I gave it a makeover years ago (2017) for a flip house that I was staging. While it served us well, I was ready for a fresh update that better fits our current style.

The silk fabric had some spots, and the chippy finish just wasn't a favorite any longer. 

One of the best parts about working with pieces like this is that you can completely customize them to fit your home.

Choosing the New Color and Fabric

I wanted something soft and classic that would blend beautifully with the room but still feel fresh.

• Paint Color: A soft, muted sage green (spray paint for ease and smooth coverage)
• Fabric: A floral print with warm tones and a traditional feel

This combination gives it that collected, classic style that I love so much.

I had 3 remnant pieces of fabric to select from. I live close to a warehouse that does one-time sales per month. It's fun to go through the remnant section. They sell it by the pound. It's great for small projects like this, and my beloved lampshade on this white lamp and the one on my kitchen counter. You can also order fabric online from All About Fabrics. They have bolts of fabric as well.

How to Do a Piano Bench Makeover

Remove the Seat

With a screwdriver, I removed the hinges from the bench and the cushion.

Remove the Old Fabric

Using pliers or a staple remover, carefully remove all of the old staples and the existing fabric.

This step takes a little patience, but it’s worth it to get a clean surface for your new fabric.

Prep the Base for Paint

Before painting, wipe down the wood to remove dust and dirt.

Then place the base on a drop cloth outside or in a well-ventilated area.

I used 1 can of this Krylon spray paint in a soft sage green. Do yourself a favor and get one of these handy trigger attachments for your spray cans. It works with most. It makes such a difference when spraying.

I like to lift my painting projects off the ground with some scrap pieces of wood. I've even used paint cans before.

I always start by spray painting my project upside down to get all the angles. 

Let it dry after a couple of light coats. Flip it over to spray it right side up.

Reupholstering the Bench Seat

Cutting the fabric

I was able to use the fabric that I removed as a template. Check and double-check the positioning of your fabric. Make sure the correct patternway is showing. 

If you do not have a piece of fabric for the template, lay your fabric face down and place the seat on top.

Cut the fabric, leaving several inches around all sides so you have enough to wrap and staple.

If you want a softer, more cushioned look, you can add a layer of batting before attaching the fabric.

This step is optional, but it does give a more finished feel. I did not do this. This bench doesn't get heavy use. 

Attaching the Fabric

Pull the fabric tightly over the seat and staple it to the underside.

• Start with the center of each side
• Then work your way out toward the corners
• Keep the fabric smooth and taut

Fold the corners neatly as you go for a clean finish.

This stapler has been a workhorse through the years. It's very simple to operate. I put some weight into it when stapling to ensure they are as flush as possible.

Once everything is secure, place the seat back onto the base and screw it back into place.

The Finished Piano Bench

The transformation is such a good reminder of what a little paint and fabric can do.

What was once a dated thrift store find is now a charming, updated piece that fits perfectly into the room. The floral fabric adds warmth and pattern, while the soft green base keeps things light and fresh.

The inspiration for the paint color change was the antique armoire in front of the piano bench.

There are two additional thrift store projects in this shot! The artwork was a simple makeover. The picnic basket on top of the armoire has been great for housing dried hydrangeas when not in use. 

The fabric on the bench adds much-needed pattern to the space. The needlepoint rug used to be in the dining room at our old house. It's about 28 years old. I'd love to replace it, but it's not necessary. So it's great to work with what you have. It really does give the guest room a collected, eclectic feel.

I still have a few things left to do in this room:

• Add matchstick wood blinds
• Add a flat, wide trim to the Amazon velvet curtains.
• refinish a pair of nightstands.
• more artwork for a couple of bare wall areas

Style a classic coffee table with thrifted decor like vintage books, urns, trays, and layered accessories for a timeless, collected look.

One of my favorite ways to decorate our home is by styling spaces with thrifted finds that have a story to tell. Vintage, antique, and thrifted pieces add warmth, charm, and personality that you just can’t replicate with brand-new décor.

Today’s monthly thrift store makeover is a simple one, but it shows how a handful of collected pieces can come together to create a classic coffee table vignette.

Most of the items used here were collected over the years. I mixed urns, ceramic bowls, vintage sake pitchers, books, and a wicker tray to create an eclectic layered look that feels collected and relaxed. A recent local thrift store visit about a month ago had me going home with 2 urn-like containers and 2 sake pitchers. I typically don't go out for thrift store shopping. I just pop in one when out doing errands.

The best part about styling our coffee table for a fresh look? I used what I already had on hand.

Not every home decor find needs a makeover! The only item that I wasn't really happy with was the color of the golden brown urn. I loved the shape and the ring hardware on the sides. It just felt a little too old-world for my liking.

Why I Love Decorating with Thrifted Pieces

Decorating with thrifted finds allows you to create a look that feels collected rather than purchased all at once. I love mixing different textures and finishes to build interest.

For this coffee table styling, I used:

• Two thrifted urns
• A pair of floral sake pitchers
• A vintage metal candlestick
• Two ceramic bowls
• A small saucer
• Stacks of books for height: ONE | TWO | THREE
• A wicker tray
• Set of love birds
• Ginger Jar
• peonies
• moss ball
• Miniature framed art

The result is a layered vignette that feels classic, relaxed, and full of personality.

Supplies Used to Paint Urn

• Can of spray paint
• Spray paint nozzle (must have)
• fine sandpaper
• risers
• drop cloth

A Quick Thrift Store Makeover

For this month’s project, I gave one piece a quick refresh.

One of the urns originally had a golden brown finish, which didn’t quite fit the softer palette I wanted for the table. I removed the metal ring hardware and gave the urn a fresh coat of spray paint.

Once the paint dried, I simply reinstalled the original hardware. The transformation was subtle but made a big difference in helping the piece blend with the other elements.

The rest of the items were left exactly as I found them. Sometimes the best approach with thrifted pieces is to simply let their character shine.

Urns are one of my favorite thrift store finds, and over the years, I’ve collected several that I use throughout the house. They are incredibly versatile and work beautifully on coffee tables, mantels, shelves, and entry tables.

Spray Painting Painting Tip

• I start by turning the urn upside down. Paint in this direction first.
• Shake the can well throughout painting.
• Let it dry well before applying additional coats of spray paint.
• Flip it over to paint from the top.
• A must for a nice smooth finish! If you have any areas that didn't spray well, that may have caused a bit of a rough texture. Take the time to lightly sand them out before going forward. You will be much happier in the long run. Wipe it down well to remove any sanding dust before resuming your painting.
• I like a gloss finish with ceramics like this. It makes it look more original.

Layering Thrifted Decor

When styling a coffee table, layering is key.

I started by placing a wicker tray in the center of the table. Trays help anchor the arrangement and keep everything visually organized.

• Books add height and a sense of collected style.
• The ceramic bowls and saucer are stacked to create visual interest. (vintage finds)
• The metal candlestick adds a touch of vintage charm. (thrifted)
• The pair of floral sake pitchers creates symmetry. (thrifted)
• One of the urns holds soft flowers for a fresh look. (thrifted)
• The blue urn holds a moss ball. (thrifted)

Small details like a moss ball and a touch of greenery help soften the arrangement and bring in natural texture.

More is More (But With a Plan)

My decorating style leans a bit eclectic, especially when it comes to vintage pieces. When styling with thrifted décor, I often feel that more is better. Ha, ha!

The trick is keeping everything grouped toward the center of the table.

Our home is a place where family and friends often gather, so I like to leave plenty of open space around the perimeter of the coffee table. That way, there’s always room for drinks, coffee cups, or appetizer plates when we’re entertaining.

Keeping the decorative elements centered allows the table to stay both beautiful and functional.

Seasonal Textures

I also love bringing in seasonal textures when styling a coffee table.

For spring and summer, wicker and woven elements feel especially fresh. The wicker tray adds warmth and texture while helping tie all of the vintage pieces together.

Mixing materials like ceramic, metal, greenery, and wicker creates a layered look that feels collected over time rather than perfectly matched.

Styling a coffee table with thrifted pieces is a wonderful way to create a space that feels personal and welcoming.

You don’t need expensive décor to create a beautiful vignette. With a few well-chosen vintage finds, some books, and a bit of greenery, you can create a centerpiece that feels both stylish and meaningful.

And best of all, thrifted decorating is always evolving. Pieces can move around the house, be restyled for different seasons, or mixed with new finds as your collection grows.

What is the Design Challenge?

The concept is simple:
Start with an inspiration image and reinterpret it using your own home and style.

Our inspiration can essentially come from anywhere online. That is how Cindy gets inspired by the challenge. If it is photo inspiration, she visits the source and asks if they'd like to be our inspiration for the monthly challenge. It's that simple! It's such a fun post each month.

This month we are recreating a sweet spring vignette featuring urns and white flowers inspired by Liz from Liz Marie Blog. I have long been a follower of Liz's beautiful blog. If you haven't visited, you are in for a treat!

Up first on my visiting list is Laura from Decor to Adore. She will be sharing her take on the inspiration on her mantel.

The Inspiration Behind This Design Challenge

For this spring vignette, I leaned into thrifted vintage decor, layered textures, and timeless traditional elements. The result feels fresh, collected, and completely at home in our space. Here are the elements that I am bringing into my spring styling.

• neutral urns
• white flowers
• green florals
• wicker
• plates
• lamp
• birds
• candlelight
• iron elements
• wall hanging

For this spring vignette, I was drawn to classic neutrals, vintage charm, and soft florals — nothing overly themed, just gentle nods to the season.

This was the first thought that came to mind when trying to decide where I wanted to design my space. While the surface area is smaller, I was drawn to the white plates that I already had hanging, flanking this thrift store mirror makeover from a few years back.

How to Style a Simple Spring Vignette

If you’ve ever wondered how to create a spring vignette that feels collected, here’s the simple formula I use:

Start with a Base

I grounded everything with a large woven tray. A tray instantly makes styling feel intentional and contained. It also allows you to move the entire vignette easily. If I had opted not to use the tray, the styling would feel a bit flat. 

Add Height with Lighting

Two slim brass lamps add symmetry and warmth. Lighting makes even the simplest vignette feel layered and cozy, especially in the evenings.

These are two rechargeable, cordless lamps that I moved here for the styling. These little things are amazing! I use them on my husband's bourbon cart, on a counter in a guest bath, on table arrangements, when the power goes out, on a table during game night, or while doing puzzles. The choices are endless! 

Adding a little pair of lamps here makes me realize that I want a permanent lamp here. It's my favorite thing to add smart bulbs wherever I can. It's like magic to watch them turn on for the schedule that I have set. 

Layer in Thrifted Vintage Decor

I am not sure that I have ever paid full price for an urn. The majority of mine are thrifted finds. I always pick them up at the thrift store. These 2 were used as is. They required no painting treatments or repair.

The lamp in the inspiration photo from Liz Marie reminded me of this thrifted candle holder. Isn't it cute with the metal floral design? 

Most of the plates going around the thrift store mirror are thrifted. I used to buy up all the thrift store ironstone I could get my hands on. It's much harder to find now. 

The small blue and white vase is also a thrifted find.

Do you notice that the back lamp is elevated? It is sitting in a thrifted pillar candle holder. The lamp base fit perfectly in it. In its original state, it could easily be passed over. 

Thrifted vintage decor brings character and history. The patina, worn edges, and subtle imperfections make a space feel lived-in and timeless.

Bring in Spring Florals

Soft white peonies in aged urns add the seasonal touch. I love keeping spring florals neutral — they brighten the space without overwhelming it.

The peonies have longer stems, but easily bend, so they fit a bit more snugly in the urns. Notice now the lamplight glow this little area has?

Finish with Greenery

I felt like the space needed a bit more height in the corner behind the peonies, so I added one of my boxwood topiaries. 

A simple boxwood topiary adds structure and that fresh spring energy we all crave this time of year.

We Can't Forget the Birds

The gorgeous swan wall art in Liz Marie's design is a showstopper. My little nod to the birds is in the form of a little pair of love birds.

Decorating Tip: Shop Your Home First

Before heading to the store or shopping online, try this:

1. Gather all your vintage books in one place
2. Pull out woven baskets or trays
3. Add a floral arrangement (real or faux)
4. Rearrange what you already have

Often, a “new” spring vignette is simply a fresh perspective on pieces you’ve owned for years.

There is something about a sunroom that instantly lifts the mood. It’s that in-between space — part indoors, part garden — where light dances across the walls and everything feels just a little more relaxed.

For this week’s Mood Board Mondays, I wanted to create a space that feels classic, layered, and full of quiet color. Think woven textures, soft linen, block print pillows, and the prettiest wash of white on the walls.

This sunroom is grounded in Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace (OC-65) — one of my favorite clean whites — and layered with soothing blues and soft greens inspired by nature.

I created the prompt to design this moody bedroom with the help of AI.

The Story Behind the Room

I envisioned this sunroom as the kind of space where you would start your morning with coffee and end your day with a good book. It needed to feel light and open, but not stark. Relaxed, but still pulled together.

The foundation is a warm tan sofa layered with block print pillows in soft blue and cream. Across from it, wooden, spindle chairs with tailored cushions bring in that collected, Southern cottage feel we all love. The textures are important here — woven rattan, linen curtains with green trim, and warm brass accents all work together to create depth.

The rug introduces the palette beautifully — soft blue, muted green, and creamy neutrals — which makes selecting paint colors effortless.

This is not a bold, high-contrast room. Instead, it’s calm. Fresh. Timeless.

This is definitely a look that you can pull from to freshen up furniture you already own. 

Why These Colors Work So Beautifully Together

Chantilly Lace (OC-65) keeps the space feeling crisp and sunlit without turning cold. It allows all the texture in the room to shine.

Scenic Drive (CC-758) adds a soft, botanical green — subtle enough to feel natural but strong enough to give personality. It’s the perfect trim, accent, or adjoining room color.

Santorini Blue 1634 (a gentle blue-gray) pulls from the deeper tones in the rug and pillows, creating harmony between textiles and paint.

Together, they create a palette that feels garden-inspired, breathable, and effortlessly layered.

You can also use a site called Samplize to get large-sized swatches. It is so helpful when trying to decide on new paint colors.

I love creating these weekly mood boards because they make design feel approachable. You don’t need to renovate an entire house — sometimes all it takes is a strong paint color and a few thoughtfully chosen layers.

This sunroom proves that soft color can still have presence. It’s relaxed, refined, and feels like it belongs in every season.
