Like many of you, I’ve spent the last few days anxiously trying to figure out what I’m going to sacrifice or do for this season of Lent while the Ash Wednesday “deadline” quickly approaches. I still feel like I’m not quite ready, but I did manage to accomplish one thing today in preparation for the next 40 days.

I felt this urgent desire to create a peaceful space for my family to use for prayer and reflection as we journey together through Lent. I spent about half an hour pulling together this corner in our office:

The space, complete with crucifix, bible, rosary, reflection books, and even a cozy blanket is, unfortunately, the only peaceful thing in the room. This is what the rest of the room looks like (brace yourself):

Haha! All I can do is look at this and laugh, because, as much as I want this whole room to be peaceful, I just can’t make it happen by tomorrow. My type-A, perfectionist tendencies have to surrender to the reality that we are still getting settled from a move and life has been crazy! So, instead of giving up, I decided to create that peaceful space in the midst of the mess. I truly believe the Holy Spirit inspired me to recognize that Jesus doesn’t want us to wait until things are “perfect” for us to spend time with Him, just as the Holy Spirit is inspiring me to share this with you.

I pray that my “mess” will encourage those of you struggling with the pressures of “the perfect Lenten sacrifice” to pray for the strength to emerge from the chaos and find those small, simple moments to spend time with Jesus, to draw closer to Him each day of this season of Lent.

On the heels of our week at camp, we said difficult goodbyes to our parishes of 11+ years, and began the transition to become the new full-time Music Directors together at St. Dominic Parish in Panama City, Florida. So, in just two days time, we experienced loss and grief for parish communities and a home we’ve grown to love, some discouraging and unexpected news, a series of doubts accompanied by thoughts of “Are we crazy? What are we doing?”, and (this part’s our favorite) our first-ever lengthy late-night trip to the ER with one of our children. Yep, that’s right. The 3-year-old busted her lip open right before bedtime, the night before our first day at our new job.

Just. Too. Much.

As we spent hours in the ER, we couldn’t help but recall the words that were spoken and the song that we sang together all throughout our week at Camp Covecrest. It became an anthem of sorts: We Will Not Be Shaken. As the line goes “Though the battle rages we will stand in the fight…”, it certainly felt (and looked) like a battle from our perspective. A battle with the evil one who sought to destroy our joy and certainty that the Lord was calling us into this new area of ministry. A calling that would bring us together as a family to worship on Sundays and commission us to serve this parish community.

While it may be tempting to throw our hands up in surrender, instead we cling to these words “For we trust in our God, and through His unfailing love, we will not be shaken, we will not be shaken, we will not be shaken” and refuse to let the evil one steal our joy or distract us from what the Lord has called us to do.

Worship with Out of Darkness (Lifeteen Covecrest – Week 4 – 2015)

…a phrase we’ve heard often over recent years as we’ve juggled two full-time parish music ministry positions, an itinerant ministry, private music lesson instruction, and the growing spiritual and emotional needs of our three children. The response to that pondering is…we don’t. Only by the grace of God have we been able to keep up with all that is currently on our plates, but most challenging has been the strain placed on our family as we divide and go separate ways when it’s time to worship. It has been a difficult realization that our very foundation…church and faith…is something that we rarely share together as a family. Much prayer and discernment in this area has gone into our desire to find a way to spend more time with our family, and ultimately, worship and minister together on Sundays.

God has blessed this desire and has provided us an opportunity to continue following our vocation to music ministry while also working together in the same parish community. We are happy to announce that, this summer, we will be filling full-time parish Music Director positions together at St. Dominic Parish in Panama City, Florida. This move is bittersweet…we are excited for what this will mean for our family and ministry, but will miss the people we have grown to love in our current parishes! We could not have asked for a more beautiful and loving environment for two young musicians and their babies to grow and learn more about music, ministry, faith, and so much more.

We are also excited to announce that we signed with Schenk Entertainment, whose team will be assisting with booking, management and promotion of Out of Darkness. This opportunity will allow us even more quality time with our family and will help further the reach of our music and ministry. Alongside a roster of many accomplished Catholic musicians and speakers we respect and count as friends, we look forward to this new relationship and new venture!

Throughout this time of transition, we ask that you pray with us, that the Lord will use us and our offerings of praise to help others grow in their experience and relationship with Him.
