Architects Turn Iceland’s Boring Electricity Pylons Into Giant Human Statues

Choi and Shine want to transform how utility structures are built. Their “Land of Giants™” design, proposed in 2008, sees electrical pylons as human-shaped statues decorating the Icelandic countryside. Architects Jin Choi and Thomas Shine are the minds behind this skunkworks, experimental design studio.

“Like the statues of Easter Island,” write Choi and Shine on their website, “it is envisioned that these one hundred and fifty foot tall, modern caryatids will take on a quiet authority, belonging to their landscape yet serving the people, silently transporting electricity across all terrain, day and night, sunshine or snow.”

Mosques throughout the Muslim world have some of the most intricate and exquisite architecture ever created by mankind. There’s too much amazing architecture in them to cover in just one post, so we decided to focus simply on the mosque’s ceilings – something the faithful might see when they look up to the heavens.

These images show just how heavily mathematics and geometry featured into Islamic architecture in the Arab world and elsewhere. The repeating perfect spirals and geometric forms are reminiscent of the intricate mandalas found in Buddhist art as well.

Mirror Houses by Peter Pichler Architecture

The Mirror Houses are a pair of holiday homes, set in the marvellous surroundings of the South Tyrolean Dolomites, amidst a beautiful scenery of appletrees, just outside the city of Bolzano. They were designed by Peter Pichler Architecture.

The Mirror houses offer a unique chance to spend a beautiful vacation surrounded by contemporary architecture of the highest standards and the most astonishing Landscape and beauty nature has to offer.

The Architecture

The client, who lives in a restructured farmhouse of the 60s on the site, asked to design a structure for renting out as luxury holiday units. Guests have their small autonomous apartment and can fully enjoy the experience of living in the middle of nature. A maximum degree of privacy for both the client and the residing guest should be taken into consideration.

The new structure is oriented towards east with their private garden and an autonomous access and parking for the guests. Each unit contains a kitchen / living room as well as a bath- and bedroom with big skylights that open to allow natural light and ventilation. A small basement serves for temporary storage. The projects initial volume is split in 2 units that are slightly shifted in height and length in order to loosening the entire structure and articulating each unit.

Both units are floating on a base above the ground evoking lightness besides offering better views from their cantilevering terraces to the impressive surrounding landscape. The volume opens towards east with a big glass facade that fades with curvilinear lines into the black aluminium shell. Mirrored glass on the west facade borders the garden of the client with the units and catches the surrounding panorama while making the units almost invisible. The mirrored glass is laminated with an UV coating preventing birds collision. From certain views of the clients garden the old existing farmhouse is mirrored in the new contemporary architecture and is literally blending into it rather then competing against.

The town was established around 1230 AD by Mediterranean settlers, who dug up the canals for the transport of peat extract, connecting the two man-made lakes lying at the eastern and southern sides of town. It was only till 1958 when Dutch director Ber Haanstra featured the town in his movie “Fanfare” that Giethoorn became a popular tourist destination. Visitors can take punter or canoe tours, learn the town’s history in local museums, attend art exhibitions, and even go ice skating on the canals during winter.

Bibury is a village and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is situated on the River Coln, about 6.5 miles northeast of Cirencester.The Church of England parish church of Saint Mary is Saxon with alter additions. From AD 1130 until the English Reformation it was a peculier of Osney Abbey in Oxford. The artist and craftsman William Morris called Bibury “the most beautiful village in England”.

Tibetan Village Project (TVP) is a non-profit, non-political organization dedicated to promoting sustainable development while preserving the rich cultural heritage of Tibet. The organization was founded in 2001 by Tamdin Wangdu to fund a medical clinic in after he lost his father in the village. Several years later, TVP has expanded its program in other villages to support more clinics, schools and community projects.

The town was originally a small lumber community built in 1906, but struggled economically. In 1962, a local committee had the idea to completely transform the town into what it is today, saving the community from certain doom through tourism.

Two Men Are Making History By Free-Climbing 3000ft Up The Hardest Route In The World

They are climbing El Capitan, a 3,000-foot-tall granite monolith in Yosemite National Park in California. This monolith has been climbed many times before, but they are ascending the Dawn Wall route, a sheer face of rock considered by many to be the longest and hardest free climb in the world.

Jorgeson and Caldwell are climbing with ropes, but these are used to protect them from falls, not as climbing aids. The razor-sharp holds on the rock wall tend to cut their fingers, so they spend occasional rest days in their tents, suspending them hundreds of feet up as they let their fingers heal.

They are already almost half-way up, and they are sharing their journey with the world through Twitter and Facebook

It is considered by many to be the hardest climb in the world

In some places, they have nothing more than their finger-tips to hold them

They’ve had to tape and glue their fingers to help them heal from the wall’s razor-thin hand holds

They will be the first people ever to ascend this legendary route by free-climbing

They prefer climbing at dusk, when it’s too cold for their palms to sweat

The ropes these climbers use only serve as safety equipment – they do not help them climb

A supporting team has dropped them provisions and they use solar power for their devices

The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword: 28 Cartoonists Pay Tribute To The Victims Of The Charlie Hebdo Shooting

In the wake of the horrific shooting at the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, illustrators and cartoonists around the world come together in solidarity with the 12 artists and ordinary people who died in that event by doing what they do best – drawing cartoons that express their thoughts and emotions more eloquently than words ever could.

Their messages range from anger and defiance to grief and hope, but there is a common thread. It is clear that, in their eyes, the people at Charlie Hebdo have died as martyrs who championed the freedom of expression and of the press, which are some of the core elements of a free society.

The Canadian Journalists for Free Expression are constantly on the outlook for ways to tell the public and the press about the atrocities journalists in many countries face. They cover stories about reporters being abducted, killed, and intimidated globally. In a recent advertising blitz, the CJFE illustrated the conflict between guns and

journalism by creating a series of announcement posters using journalism tools to make images of guns. As you look closer at the images, you will notice the weapons are built from microphones, hand-held recorders, notepads, pens, cameras, and other tools journalists use everyday.

Underwater Puppies: New Photo Series By Seth Casteel

Do you remember photographer Seth Casteel’s adorable underwater dog photography series? Now, the New York- and LA-based photographer is back with a sequel capturing the first moments of little puppies diving into the water for the first time.

“To create this series, I taught swimming lessons to over 1500 puppies, building their confidence in the water and helping them develop safety and survival skills,” writes Casteel. “Most of the puppies only swam for a few minutes and were not ready for pictures, but some decided to start jumping in on their own and chase after toys!“

Casteel brilliantly captures the struggles, fears, and joys of puppies that are learning to swim. You can see them all in his up-coming photo book “Underwater Puppies.”

Russian Artist Creates Colorful Illustrations Out Of Colored Paper

Moscow-born artist Yulia Brodskaya creates stunningly intricate typography and illustrations out of colored paper. Using only paper and glue, she cuts, quills and uses other paper art techniques to make extraordinary pieces of art. In 5 years the artist has created more than 100 projects, working with major brands like Nokia, Starbucks, and The New York Times Magazine.

We’ve written about Brodskaya’s inspiring typography art before, so now we’d like to focus on her illustrations, many of which depict elderly people’s portraits with beautiful colors and swirls.

Six Industrial Silos Turned Into Cartoonish Giants By Os Gemeos

Six massive industrial silos on the Granville Island in Vancouver, Canada, have been wonderfully transformed into six vividly colored giants by Brazilian graffiti artist duo Os Gemeos. Octavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, the twin brothers behind Os Gemeos, dedicated roughly a month of their time to create this astonishing piece as part of the Vancouver Biennale.

The mural is also a part of Os Gemeos’s on-going art project titled “Giants,” with their trademark yellow giant characters leaving their imprint in cities around the world. However, with each silo measuring 75 feet (23 meters) high and the mural covering a total of 23,500 square feet (7,200 sq meters), this piece is by far the biggest in their collection, and is their first foray into the three-dimensional mural format.

You can contribute to the Indiegogo fundraising campaign to compensate the expenses associated with the mural.

Perez, an excellent representative of the growing BarberArt movement, cuts, shaves, and dyes hair to create photo-realistic portraits, beautiful floral and geometrical patterns, or pretty much anything he himself or his confident clients can imagine.

The Sardines Collection by Bordallo Pinheiro

The Sardine collection by Bordallo Pinheiro results from a collaboration between the Earthenware Factory of Caldas da Rainha, founded in 1884 by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, and EGEAC/Municipality of Lisbon, which has been organising, since 2011, the Sardines competition within the Lisbon Festivities. This initiative, open to all participants, has resulted in a remarkable number of creative proposals, from which we chose those that make up this collection. Having started with 22 different models (21 originating from the competition, plus the original Bordallo sardine), its composition will be reviewed annually, with the introduction of new creative proposals and the discontinuation of others. Each year is therefore an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire some of these models. Additionally, special limited editions will be created in collaboration with international designers.

Etazin – A Sculptural Rotating Lounge Chair by Kate Brown

Arizona based designer Kate Brown created a unique contemporary lounge chair called Etazin that embodies functionality, aesthetics and high quality performance.
The structure of the chair, except for the soft part, was made of steel. This way, designer Kate Brown combined a lounge chair and a hammock in this alternative shape. The chair itself rotates at 360 degrees. The cushions are removable. It easily accommodates two people, and it’s very good for relaxing in the back yard.

Japanese designer of shoes and bags Masaya Kushino is the owner of his own brand that is promoted not only in his native country but also in Europe and North America.
The new series of Masaya Kushino is called Jakuchu and symbolizes the transformation of a nestling in a beautiful bird with a luxurious feather assembly. The series is called that way after the Japanese painter of the eighteenth century, whose name was Jakuchu Ito.

Top 25 Most Liveable Cities

Published once a year, the Monocle mag a list of the "Top 25 Most Liveable Cities", based on the quality of life of each city. The hype around Copenhagen I have already noticed last year, I was also only just there and can also confirm that all complete. I just counted times, 17 of the 25 cities on this list I have to know her (if sometimes only very briefly), a few cities so still remain. I would urgently times to Japan and from Portland you can hear nothing but good, I'll keep the time in mind. Germany is actually represented in this list only 3x, Munich is located on the 8, Berlin and Hamburg on the 14 to the 20; so what is not true, Hamburg is one in each list before Munich.

For the preparation of this list, there were different criteria, including it was about the crime rate, the health care system, government-funded education and the business climate within the respective city. The whole was then combined with the assessment of quality of life, which is, composed of the factors of the number and size of green areas, the commitment to culture, average number of hours of sunshine, charging stations for electric cars and the ease of starting a business. Here we have the Top 25 with one representative mounting photo for you, down there plus an animation clip.

"Panic Room" by Tilt

Tilt is an internationally recognised traditional graffiti artist, originating from Toulouse in South France. A self declared "graffiti fetishist", he learned his trade in the streets and on trains as a youngster. In the time since he did his first tags on a skateboard ramp back in '88, his ensuing career has been nourished and influenced by extensive travel.

Tilt loves demonstrating that basic, primitive graffiti can be as strong as complicated 3D lettering, wildstyles and characters. His focus on fun, high impact shapes and strong colours is a reflection of his history as a true graffiti writer, trained on the streets and in the train yards. Similarly, his extensive use of bubbly, curvaceous forms relates to his obsession with beautiful females.

Following classic hip-hop graffiti ideology, his individual styled name is the focal point in the majority of his paintings, in Tilt's case a bubble letter "throw-up". "Throw-Up" is graf terminology for a writer's spraypainted name incorporating fast lines and done in one or two colours, designed for fast execution; it is the action which Tilt is most interested in, thus he utilises his throw-up styles to visually communicate the fun of creating graffiti in risky situations.

Two Men Are Making History By Free-Climbing 3000ft Up The Hardest Route In The World

Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell are climbing a sheer 3,000-foot wall of granite on El Capitan in Yosemite

They are already almost half-way up, and they are sharing their journey with the world through Twitter and Facebook

It is considered by many to be the hardest climb in the world

In some places, they have nothing more than their finger-tips to hold them

They’ve had to tape and glue their fingers to help them heal from the wall’s razor-thin hand holds

They will be the first people ever to ascend this legendary route by free-climbing

They prefer climbing at dusk, when it’s too cold for their palms to sweat

The ropes these climbers use only serve as safety equipment – they do not help them climb

A supporting team has dropped them provisions and they use solar power for their devices
