Michael Jackson - New Music - More Music Videos

December 1983. I was 11 years old and in the sixth grade. I will always remember being at school, in class, though not which class it was. (Most likely music class.) I remember the teacher wheeled in a TV and VCR, and played Michael Jackson's Thriller in class -- the whole 13 minute movie. The teacher impressed upon us what an interesting and innovative new concept this mini-movie music video was. I also remember thinking how cool synchronized dancing zombies were. I also remember the chills when I heard Vincent Price's immortal rap.

Today, June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died from cardiac arrest. The autopsy will hopefully reveal what, if anything, contributed to his death. Some people are lauding his life, music, and genius, while others are condemning him even in the wake of his death. It seems you either loved or hated him as a musician. He was an easy target of jokes and slander, and we may never know the truth behind allegations of abuse that he settled in and out of court.

I neither ignore nor excuse the radical, instable behavior he exhibited during the last few years of his life. But I can, and do, separate Michael Jackson the artist from Michael Jackson the human being.

I will mourn him. I have been watching the news since I first heard the reports of him being taken to the hospital. I have been listening to his music on the radio and watching his videos. I will watch "Moonwalker", and if I can find it, "The Wiz". I will revel in the joy I have in hearing him sing and seeing him dance.

Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y'awl's neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse's shell

Sorry, but I wanted to give everyone a quick update. It has been a pretty busy week for both Michelle and I. So, we're going to try to do an episode early next week, after the True Blood premiere. We'll discuss that along with the final episode of Moonlight.

In the meantime, if you REALLY miss me rambling on about bloodsuckers, I was a guest again on the excellent Love Long and Prosper podcast (this week's ep. #117). Yes, it is a Star Trek podcast, but CJ is a fan of vampires as well, so we chatted about the Las Vegas vampire revue "Bite" at the Stratosphere, and also Twilight, the New Moon trailer, and Eclipse. Also visiting was Jack Hosley, aka WNDRWolf of the always cool WanderRadio podcast.

I wish this article gave the native name for the dish, but this BBC article discusses a food fad in Chad they dub "vampire" -- fried blood. From the article: "I make it with peppers, salt, onions, spicy sauce and maggi [stock cubes]. I fry it all up like that; it's good," said Modestine Danbe, who lives in the N'Djamena. "It's actually an excellent source of nutrients, especially for children," said Robert Johnston, a nutritional specialist for Unicef in Chad. "Blood pudding and liver have been used in other countries to promote high-protein intake for families who don't have daily access to meat."

I just felt a powerful disturbance, like a million fanboys screaming, “Oh no, not again” in unison. Reboot fever is running rampant in Hollywood thanks to the success of the new Star Trek movie. Up next on the docket: Buffy. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Fran and Kaz Kuzui are working with Vertigo Entertainment to relaunch Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. I’m torn. For I am a Joss Whedon fan to the core, but I’m also a Buffy fan. I say give Fran and Kaz enough celluloid to hang themselves or to prove fans wrong. I’d personally rather see a Season Eight influenced movie with Joss and the TV cast back, but I think we’ve all heard (repeatedly) that just isn’t gonna happen. Maybe this old beastie just needs some fresh blood to bring her back.

Fans of Charlaine Harris rejoice! The ninth book in the Sookie Stackhouse series hits stores today. In DEAD AND GONE, the weres and shifters finally make their existence known to the world. (Did they come out of the "doghouse"?) Also, don't forget that Season One of HBO's True Blood goes on sale in just two weeks, on May 19th. Less than a month later, on June 14th, Season Two will air on HBO.

I hadn't even heard about the plagiraism suit until I found this article. "A news report that Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is being sued for plagiarism is now being reported as a hoax. The Sun, a British-based tabloid newspaper, reported Sunday that the author is being sued by a former college roommate... The Sun in Britain has recanted its original story. A number of Twilight websites erroneously reported that filming of the Twilight movie sequel New Moon had been halted as a result of the rumoured legal action, but production continues in Vancouver."

Falling into the category of Cinema-Irony, Micheal Sheen (Lucian the lycan from Underworld) is slated to play the vampire Aro, the leader of the Volturi clan, in the movie adaptaion of Stephenie Meyer's New Moon. I think Sheen would be a good fit for the ancient Aro. We shall see come November.

This is just full of awesome: "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith... has just inked a two-book deal with Grand Central Press for a rumored $575,000, Publishers Weekly reported. Grahame-Smith's first book for Grand Central Press, which currently has no release date, will be Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The proposal for the new novel sold at auction Wednesday, and the story is a loose sketch of Lincoln's life with one twist—our 16th president is the world's most skilled vampire hunter."

Variety reports that Lionsgate and After Dark Films are bringing "Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter" to TV! Glen Morgan ("The X-Files") wrote the adaptation and will exec. produce the TV movie, and LKH will act as a co-producer. Production is slated for this summer.
