Planting Fruit Trees in your Garden

Have you thought about planting fruit trees in your garden? Do you know where to start? It can be difficult to choose which one will be best, there are so many types and sizes.

First of all think about what fruits you like to eat, no use growing something you don’t like. Then think about which trees grow well in your area. Take a walk around your locality or have a chat with your neighbors, they will probably be more than happy to give you advice and encouragement. It is of course possible to grow exotic fruits in your garden but they may take up more time and be harder work and produce less fruit. However don’t let this put you off if you really fancy the challenge of growing something different. Your local nursery will also be able to give you great advice on trees suitable for your area.

Before planting fruit trees consider the amount of sunshine and rainfall in your area. For instance choose a plum tree if you live in a wet climate but a pear or apple tree if you’re in a drier climate.

Fruit trees can be dwarf, semi-dwarf or standard. If you only have a small backyard then a dwarf fruit tree would be ideal. Because they are small you will find them easier to prune and harvest yet the fruit is the same size as that from the larger trees.

If you have room for a medium sized tree then you can choose a semi-dwarf. They will grow from 10-16 feet and will produce more fruit than a dwarf tree.

Planting standard fruit trees will provide shade and plenty of delicious fruit during the season. However they can grow very large and it can be more difficult to prune and harvest the fruit.

Planting a flower garden will bring great beauty and often fragrance to your little patch of paradise.

The quickest way to get results is by planting annuals. These are species which sprout, grow to maturity, set seed and die within one season and include such favorites as marigolds, zinnias, alyssum and nasturtium.

Biennials complete their life cycle in two seasons; in the first year they grow and establish then in the following year they produce blooms and die. This group includes pansies, violas, foxgloves and forget-me-nots.

Perennials on the other hand live for three or more years and most are referred to as herbaceous plants meaning that they die down each year but the roots live through the winter and send up new growth in spring. They are best divided every 3-5 years and include asters, chrysanthemums and daisies.

Bulbs are often found in the flower garden though many prefer cold climates. They are spring flowering so will provide glorious color before the annuals are planted out and before the perennials have begun their new growth. Most bulbs can be left in the ground to return the following year and examples include tulips, daffodils, crocus, gladioli, anemones and dahlias. This is a great bonus - do the work once and reap the rewards for years to come!

When you are planting a flower garden you will often include a mixture of annuals, perennials, bulbs and also small trees and shrubs, like rhododendrons and roses, to provide interest throughout the whole year. Who can resist the beautiful fragrances that roses provide.
