Cameras seem to innovate and technically expand faster than cell phones these days. Cameras are becoming less expensive, more technically sound, and have developed into a multi billion dollar business now that they have found a market as POV cameras donning the tops of ski helmets, the ends of surfboards, the decks of kayaks, whatever else you can think of. There is a broadening array of manufacturers out there making head cams, but the true market leader and pioneer of this growing gizmo has got to be GoPro: and man did they step it up this year with their 2nd Generation version of the infamous GoPro HD Hero.

NEW features for the GoPro HD Hero 2 include: option of frame rate ranging from 30-120fps, resolution from 720-1080p, an impressive 11MP resolution that can shoot up to 10 photos/sec., and a field of views at 90°, 127°, and 170°. 2013 Icelantic Review

Just when I thought Icelantic Skis couldn't outdo last year's stellar lineup and "You are an animal" themed artwork, they come out firing on all cylinders with two new skis, a line of Side Country boots (First Degree ST1 and ST2 boot review
coming soon) and an array of artwork that would bring Alex Grey himself to tears. Artistic Director and hypothetical student of metaphysics Travis Parr, (one can only guess his ideals lie with Plato's notion of that which holds that what exists lies beyond experience) set his sights high and shaped a line of artwork that everyone at SIA couldn't take their eyes off.

This year, Icelantic's theme is, "Find Your Rhythm." An audibly growing drum beat that builds to a reckoning of what is to come from this Denver-based ski company. Icelantic has been busy this past year building up to a 2013 season bound for not only more snow (much much more snow, right snow Gods?) but a year where they find their rhythm, delving into a plan of action that saw them sign one of the top big mountain skiers on the planet, Julian Carr, (owner of Discrete Headwear) who by the way also got the cover of the new Warren Miller movie, Flow State improved on their already bomber ski construction, added a line of ski boots, dubbed The First Degree, and threw the most monumental and first ever, Winter Concert at Red Rocks over the SIA show weekend this past January. That show sold out I might add, and if you weren't there, you missed one hell of a party. But don't worry, word around the campfire is they are making this an annual event. sshhhhh

Not only have they added two benchmark skis to their growing iconic lineup- the Seeker and Nomad RKR, but a few material additions have also sprung up. First, for 2013 Icelantic's top-sheet material has changed from Nylon to Carbonium. Carbonium has increased durability, (chip resistant) is lighter, damper, snow doesn't stick to it, and it is by far the finest top-sheet material on the market today.

Keeper Hypnotic Horizon

Icelantic chose Carbonium due to the success Never Summer had with it last year, and to stick to their historical M.O. of providing consumers with skis made up of the finest and most technologically advanced materials on the market, it just made sense. In addition, my thoughts on the Carbonium, especially for this year's artwork, is that it gives the skis a deeper, almost 3D appearance.

There is a lot going on in those graphics, so look deep into the various horizons that move your eye further into the ski when you see them in person, then as your hypnosis grows thicker and your mind becomes heavy, breath deeply, grab the pair off the rack and walk them to the register and just hypnotically nod to the sales associate. They will know what to do.

Second, Icelantic invested in an industrial Wintersteiger tuning machine that provides consumers with a fully tuned ski right out of the wrapper, with a pattern that is specific to each model. That right there is the equivalent of an $80 value if you ask me.

Now to the meat and potatoes my friends. Feast your eyes and turn on your minds.

The 2013 Icelantic Gypsy is back for year two. It's the POW ski all other POW skis want to be like. Back from a year where it was the new kid on the block that everybody wanted to secretly be friends with, even when they were committed to their old friend from years past. The reason? The Gypsy not only floats like a butterfly in the deep, but is cool, calm, and collected when faced with the crunchy, hard packed bully up the block.

This baby can lock in on turns when pressed and turn a bully into a friend connecting front side with backside without having to switch to another set of boards in your quiver mid-day.

One of Icelantic's 2013 new models - (The Seeker is a ski) not for the faint of heart, said one tester at SIA. Another said, "This thing is a different animal altogether, the most powerful ski I've been on in a long time, I can't believe there is no metal in that core."

True to its name, the Seeker is a blood thirsty plank of raw power that big mountain skiers will be gushing over this season. Anybody who is in need of a ski that can man-up to the task of their hard charging ways will be pointing this ski down their favorite couloir and letting their confidence build the run for them. Julian Carr will be riding this one all over the world this year and you may even see this crusher on a few podiums as well.

Ah, the Keeper - a ski that has become another benchmark of Icelantic's line, and personally my favorite graphic for 2013.

Early rise tip and tail and traditional camber underfoot makes this baby an all-mountain ripper that has a surprising 16m turn radius (178cm) on a ski that is 119 mm on the waist. An anomaly in its own right. Take two runs and come back and tell me you don't love this beast.
Take 3 runs and I'll probably be pissed that you took that many runs on a demo day. Come on share the love people.

The 2013 Icelantic Shaman is, as David Byrne so eloquently put it in his song, Once in a Lifetime off the album, Remain In Light, Same as it ever was.

Remain in light while skiing on these two effortless planks of poplar. You will feel the Shamanic light surround you like a pink Snuggy you've sewn yourself into against all your better judgement. In other words its a good move my friends.

This kind of ski comes around once in a lifetime like that sun-kissed beauty you spent 16 magical hours with only to wake up to the realization you will never see her again and strangely, your wallet is missing. So, grab destiny by the snowballs, strap in, throw I Know You Rider on your headphones, and steal an hour back from your life while you cry yourself down the hill - it only gets better with time.

And to keep with old adages,

If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. (a proverb meaning it is better to have something that is certain than take a risk to get more) No risk here and no need to keep hunting, your one quiver ski has arrived.

Seeing is believing and in this case skiing is achieving. Get on a pair and you will never look back, I promise.

Stop me if you heard this one. So, a ski walks in a bar with camber sits down in a chair and then falls. A patron of the bar says, "You are off your rocker."

That was terrible and I apologize.

No need for pleasantries though with the NEW FOR 2013 Icelantic Nomad RKR because this ski has already turned heads and will be in all the gnar mags come this fall for best of.

Icelantic did away with the Nomad SFT to keep the confusion down a little and has put together a ski that will inevitably outsell all other Icelantic models in its first year. I'll call it the tramp of the line because this little bitty will be getting around come this winter.

"The most playful and fun ski I have sk'd all day." said one SIA tester.

"I'll take 30 pair." said a Michigan shop owner.

NOMAD RKR, remember it, see it, know it, but don't ever underestimate it. To paraphrase and add-lib Trey Anastasio, . . . this (ski) is going to F#$@ your face, 'Cause it knows how to scream.

I believe the cost is $1000 and it includes a limited edition t-shirt, large Giclee art print, a set of Nomad RKRs with the Sam Flores design on them and a set of ski hangers. Sam stopped by and airbrushed the print live at the show after doing his mural for the Denver Airport last January as part of the Terminal Kings project.

As if the new RKR with a limited edition Sam Flores print wasn't enough excitement to make you change your drawers, Travis Parr has created a Special Edition Nomad RKR to commemorate Loveland's 75th Anniversary.

What does this mean? It means I'm going to have 3 pairs of Nomad RKRs this year and two of those pairs will never see snow, and my girlfriend is just going to have to deal with it!

LifeProof iPhone and iPad Cases Review

What is so LifeProof about an iPhone case?

With the menagerie of iPhone cases on the market, the need to weed out the pretenders can lead to an extensive Google search that can leave you cross-eyed. Well search no more, LifeProof has designed and engineered cases that are dirt proof, waterproof, snow proof, and shock proof.

Last week at the US based Outdoor Retailer, I tested the durability of the LifeProof iPhone case. At the prompting of the gentleman working the booth, I spiked his LifeProof laden iPhone on the concrete floor, and after a nifty bounce I picked it up with absolutely no sign of damage to the iPhone and the LifeProof case was also in perfect shape.

After doing some digging on the web, I found some great user videos that illustrate the IP-68 waterproof standards -- the highest International Protection rating -- that the LifeProof case exhibits. At the Outdoor Retailer show they had both iPads and iPhones submerged in a tank of water with their displays fully illuminated to show that they were working without a glitch.

In this video a user freedives about 10 feet in the ocean with his iPhone shooting video. Although the LifeProof case is tested to 10 feet, LifeProof recommends staying above 6.6 feet or 2 meters.

As an avid outdoorsmen that puts all my gear through extensive abuse while hiking, skiing, kayaking, and the ever-popular getting out of my car while my iPhone is on my lap, I appreciate the no-nonsense approach that LifeProof as a company displays and the levels of protection that they spell out for you on their website. Further, I find that popular cases like the Otterbox can be obtrusively large and bulky in a pocket, whereas the LifeProof case is surprisingly low profile.

Although, LifeProof cases start at around $79 or £59.99 for all my UK readers, the functionality in my eyes far exceeds the price. Not only are you getting a bomber case for your most prized electronic possessions, but adding the cost of a LifeProof case from the time you buy your iPhone or iPad until you decide to sell it and trade up will increase the resell value considerably. An unmarked and unscratched used iPhone will garner at least that much more extra cash when you go to resell it. Plus adding a LifeProof case with your sale only makes your ebay listing all the more desirable, which will ultimately make your LifeProof investment back and possibly even a little more.

I'm not saying you will make money on this device, but take a look for yourself on the web and see how much an iPhone with sells and one that has rattled around a purse for a year. The difference to me looks considerable.

Native Watercraft Slayer 12 and 14.5 Review

The Slayer is Native Watercraft's new boat for 2013 and it will come in both 12' and 14'6" models. According to Legacy Paddlesports, the Native Watercraft Slayer should be shipping in September 2012. The Native Watercraft Slayer 12 is priced at $1179 and the Slayer 14.5 at $1279. I've seen the design both as CAD specs on paper and from video released last week. Legacy Paddlesport's resident kayak fishing gurus Jimbo and Woody spent the last two summers fishing with pro kayak anglers and really getting a feel for what these fishermen were looking for, and I think Legacy has really nailed it with this one.

Designed with a clean deck layout (KISS) the Slayer offers ample room to stand, rig, strip line, or simply chill out and enjoy the day. (Native Watercraft Catalog 2013)

Unlike some pretenders this thing is ultra stable in terms of being able to really stand up and not feel squirrely. The Slayer paddles more efficiently and maneuvers better than any sit-on-top fishing kayak on the market, which I believe manifests from the Native Manta Ray in terms of hull design, because that boat really moves for a sit-on-top.

The seat is unprecedented, sticking with the same First Class Seat design in terms of material and comfort, but is a huge step up from other high-low seats out there. Many kayak anglers had complaints about how other high-low seats on the market have a bar that digs into their tailbone. Plus the supposed option to use a cooler under your seat wasn't really an option at all in other high-low models. In the video a Yeti cooler is displayed and fits perfectly on its own, or as a boost to the seat. They also showed how easily Plano boxes fit underneath the seat and how easy they are to access.

Anglers wanted lots of easily accessible storage and universal features that could be used throughout the whole Native line - from the Ultimate to the Manta Ray to the Slayer. That is why Native fans will be pleased with the design. Both the fore and aft open bow storage areas not only perfectly fit the Native Watercraft coolers that go all the way back to the first years Native arrived to market, but the Groove Track Mounts fit all the same Native accessories from years past like the Folding Dash, Lashpoints, "The Groove" Scotty Rod Mounts, Outfitting Plate, etc.

As a kayak fisherman, I really hoped that Native made the area for resting your rods open. I have fished with multiple rods on a kayak where you are sticking your rod into a closed compartment and it becomes cumbersome and in all actuality you just don't use it. I usually just set my rod on top of the compartment, but with multiple rods on board, tangles and clutter just seemed to follow. The Slayer -- thank the fishing Gods -- has simple rod tip rests that are split by a functional dry compartment, which holds all of your electronics and valuables. It sounds like a small feature, but in my world it is huge. Kayak Anglers wanted simple, streamlined, and uncluttered features with clean lines that can be easily customized and the Native Watercraft Slayer has done just that.

Rounding out the features are carefully designed and well placed scuppers in the fore and aft storage areas, and both open storage areas have an option for hatch covers if you so choose. Further, their are molded indents fore and aft for tackle boxes. From the video the indents make a lot of sense - very subtle indents - just enough so that tackle boxes and buckets aren't sliding around the boat. Last, the Tag Along Stern Wheel comes standard on the Slayer because fishing sit-on-tops loaded with accessories can only be so light without giving up options and extras. The Tag Along Stern Wheel just gives you one more nice extra after you unload the boat and need to take it that last 20 feet or so to the water without dragging over concrete or rocks.

The Slayer will be available Fall of 2012 and comes in Mango, Fire Brick Red, Lime, Olive, Sand, and Camo.

2012 Icelantic Skis Review continued . . . Nomad & Nomad SFT

The Nomad & Nomad SFT

The 2012 Icelantic Nomad is cosmetically and spiritually symbolized, with good reason, by the mountain goat. Mountain goats have a natural ability to descend down precarious rock faces, traverse across jagged cliffs, and shuffle down sloughing slopes faster, and with more grace than Sly Stallone dodging a melee of gunfire while cascading a two-step down a mountain cliff hanger. Yeah - that fast, and that graceful!

A fitting creature to represent a ski with an equal amount of versatility and maneuverability. I know I've said it before, but this ski is the one quiver ski. With a narrower waist than the iconic Shaman, the Nomad surfs in at a cool 105 mm underfoot. Another brilliant ski from Icelantic that is a crowd favorite due to its adaptability and explosive power. It's as shapely as Marilyn with dimensions running 140 mm in the tip, 105 mm on the waist, and 130 mm in the caboose, and as balanced as Daniel LaRusso, Crane-Style against the Cobra Kai nemesis, Johnny Lawrence. Although, its sidecut is not as drastic as the Shaman, it provides a different style of all terrain shredding.

The turn radius runs 14, 17, and 20 meters respectively for its 156, 168, and 181 cm lengths. I'd categorize this ski under anyone looking for one ski to literally do a little bit of everything. If you like hitting little booters in the BC - no problem - with its balance and exceptional control, it's super fun and playful. If you run into groomers a lot in the Midwest and out East, it can handle it, and handle it well - holding edge on hard pack with surprising side to side quickness. If you make it out west a couple times a year and hope to stumble upon some blower conditions, or you want to hike a ridge you've had your eye on, then no need to demo a powder ski, ride your Nomads with pride and feel the solid planks keeping you confident on that precarious ridge, and floating you to the promised land.

The Nomad SFT is a lighter, more flexible version of the Nomad. It features Icelantic's soft Nollie Flex Core. It's a big mountain jib ski that allows skiers to take their front-side antics to the BC. One rider I spoke with on a lift was rocking the Marker Schizo binding on his SFTs and was grinning from ear to ear talking about how fun his set up was. He remarked, " . . . it has awesome flex for park days (and the Schizo adds ability to turn your traditional mount into a center mount (with a few key turns on the toe piece ) and even with the 105 mm underfoot, it's light enough to go back side on tree runs and throw down, and so easy and effortless when you want to carve around with your Grandma." I added Grandma.

What is so great about carbon fiber poles?  According to Easton’s website, “Carbon poles have a much higher strength-to-weight ratio than even the finest aluminum poles. Years of composite engineering expertise makes Easton carbon the strongest, lightest weight tent support systems in the world.”

Furthermore, I would also make the comparison of aluminum kayak paddles to carbon-shafted paddles. Carbon is always nice to the touch, whereas aluminum is most always cold, not to mention the weight differential between the two. Both have flex to give, but I’ve snapped quite a few aluminum paddles on cold autumn mornings, and I’ve snapped a couple carbon paddles also. So, do the lightweight pros of carbon fiber sacrifice strength and durability?

Does this mean carbon fiber poles are more brittle?  According to Easton’s website, “No, not the way Easton makes them. Our (Easton’s) carbon poles have been tested since 2005 in extreme conditions including Everest, K2 and other peaks. With reasonable care, Easton carbon poles will outlast aluminum poles.”

I would also assume that with carbon in comparison to aluminum, poles are less likely to lose the integrity of their shape and are less likely to break in colder temps. I guess I would compare aluminum bike frames to steel, or composite frames. Aluminum is susceptible to nicks, which will jeopardize the actual strength of the frame over time, whereas steel, or composite frames not only absorb shock better, but also take punishing nicks and dents in stride and do not necessarily affect the actual integrity, or rigidness of the frames, especially when nicks occur at the butted ends, or welded conjoining tubes.

This year Icelantic has once again outdone itself, bringing a strong 2012 lineup with a couple of new additions. A little background to get you lifted . . .

Icelantic isn’t your average ski company. I characterize it as more of a cultural awakening to the ski industry. Founder, Ben Anderson, is a Colorado transplant from Toledo, Ohio, but he quickly traded his Midwest hills for Rocky Mountains and never looked back in terms of finding innovative ways to enhance the ski industry. Simply typing www.icelanticboards.com into your web browser will give you a pretty good idea of the nature of this company. I’m not going to get into it too much because clicking through the site is the best experience it, but I will say that Icelantic is definitely all about skiing, keeping their company independent, American made, and full of good-natured people that you can see are doing something they love to do. Take for example their International Sales and Marketing Manager, Annelise Loevlie, who also writes a weekly First Degree Newsletter that serves up everything from music picks, reviews, event information, and some good old-fashioned story-telling of her trips far and wide that will have you wanting to smell that same mountain air, float on the same powder, and definitely have you smiling at your computer screen. Anderson also gets the writing urge, sending off reviews of the skis he designs and stands behind with a 2-year warranty.

It is pretty refreshing to have the owner of the company be so hands on and writing to you about the progression of the Icelantic line. I mean I’ve heard the saying, “I need to hear it from the horse’s mouth,” but that still seems ridiculously cool to me. I’ve never received an email from Mr. JoJo K2 telling me about his lineup – man that guy needs to get off his high horse. Not to pick on K2, they make good stuff to, but I bet they don’t host First Friday parties in Denver with live music and free beer. I’ll tell you a company who does though.

Be An Animal!

Speaking of horses, Icelantic’s theme this coming year is, BE AN ANIMAL, sparking the inspiration behind Icelantic’s trippy graphics ’12. Co-founder and friend of Icelantic, Travis Parr, is the man who brings Icelantic’s lineup to life. Parr is a successful artist who naturally thrives in the conscious world of skiing, and pushes the limits of that reality to express creative symbiosis with his canvas. Two organisms – man and canvas – living in close physical association with one another, each benefitting and giving life to the other. As soon as this symbiosis is complete the skis part with Parr and find another to live harmoniously with ripping stashes, living life to the fullest and possibly taking on new ownership until eventual evolution of a new year, a new line, and a new theme begins the cyclical process again.

Well, that is the way I see it anyways and if you check out his artistic philosophies and his stunning work, you will see how I came to that conclusion. It is how it should be. Breath life into a company through art, music, and overall consciousness for quality in product and life, and you will gain loyal customers. Be stagnant, money grubbing, stuffed-shirt, ego maniacs with inflated ideas that your product must be everywhere, and at the same time, to the point that you start believing it really is, then you might as well change your company’s name from whatever it is to “Ubiquity” and you will lose, if not your business, surely you soul. So, the moral is before you lose – lose the ego and all will be fine. That’s my rant now on to the lineup.

Gypsy

Everyone has gone camber crazy these last few years and why not, it’s frickin’ cool stuff when used correctly and you have not skied Powder until you float on a pair of reverse camber skis and Icelantic has got their Gypsy on point. Like a Gypsy, this thing is a rambler with the mystique to back it up, which is probably why Travis Parr chose the Walrus to represent this NEW diddy. The walrus is quick, nimble and sports the best moustache in the animal kingdom. The Gypsy has nearly symmetrical dimensions enabling you to bounce through the POW and pillow drop your way to blissful face shots that will have you donning a white ‘stache and bragging to your mates that You Are the Walrus, as you calmly sip four fingers of peppermint schnapps.

Furthermore, the Gypsy isn’t what you think – on hard-pack you can still rip. No need to smear across the cord’ on traverses to your secret stash, lay it over, butter around, make the backcounty your backyard and go play because with these skis the only thing it is lacking is an open mind. It is the reverse camber ski that can simply do it all. What is that slogan? “Rethink Impossible.” Sucks that AT&T has that slogan because I drop calls all day, practice what you preach AT&T, rethink your whole network.

Keeper

Represented by the Elk, a western mountain beast with the strength, stamina and power that embodies the very core of this ski. The Keeper has early rise tip and tail giving it flotation through the light stuff, but the traditional camber underfoot allows skiers to engage the full potential of the edge without feeling squirrely at all, set it and forget it.

Icelantic’s signature sidecut is becoming something of a legend in the industry these days and the Keeper could be the benchmark example of such lore. All joking aside, these things are seriously the most of fun I have experienced on variable condition days when you are not quite sure what you are going to get, but you want to be ready for everything so keep these in your quiver. Not to mention the turn radius on the Keeper is razor sharp for being 119 on the waist coming in at 16 meters on the 178s. You can take these babies home to mom and when they go to get you another beer from the fridge, mom will whisper to you, “Their Keepers honey.”

Shaman

Ahh, the Shaman, evoking images of Ayahuasca Ceremonies in the jungles of Peru, but that’s another post altogether. The Shaman is represented by the Turtle, the most ancient of any vertebrate animal and symbolizes the portal between earth and sky. The turtle may be the most symbolically celebrated animal in literature, mythology, and folklore, and the Shaman is rapidly becoming the most celebrated ski in Icelantic’s catalogue. The first time I took a few turns on the Shamans was in 2007. Ben Anderson was kind enough to send a pair out to a shop I was working at in Michigan at the time. They were shorter then, but still designed the same with their unique diamond shaped shovel, tapered tail, and 110mm underfoot.

My friend who was also trying the skis with me was skeptical. I went into it with an open mind being that I was skiing a fairly wide ski at the time on Michigan packed granular, but I ripped these things with a smile on my face that literally couldn’t be smacked off. I know this because my buddy smacked me when I wouldn’t let him try them out right away. I felt just like the Mock Turtle in Lewis Carroll’s, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland without the calf appendages. I just kept going on and on about them on the chair ride to the top of the mountain. So, in a few words: amazing and unbeatable, which is probably another reason why the Turtle was chosen as the themed animal. Unbeatable, like facing turtle, King Koopa in Super Mario Brothers for the first time. Quite simply they rip, built with unrivaled torsional rigidity and a 160 mm tip that can float Pow and crush Crud all in the same day with an aggressive sidecut that is stupid-sweet (that’s very good). You want a one-quiver ski. This is it friends. Be an animal and go buy a pair now.

The Nomad & Nomad SFT

The 2012 Icelantic Nomad is cosmetically and spiritually symbolized, with good reason, by the mountain goat. Mountain goats have a natural ability to descend down precarious rock faces, traverse across jagged cliffs, and shuffle down sloughing slopes faster, and with more grace than Sly Stallone dodging a melee of gunfire while cascading a two-step down a mountain cliff hanger. Yeah - that fast, and that graceful!

A fitting creature to represent a ski with an equal amount of versatility and maneuverability. I know I've said it before, but this ski is the one quiver ski. With a narrower waist than the iconic Shaman, the Nomad surfs in at a cool 105 mm underfoot. Another brilliant ski from Icelantic that is a crowd favorite due to its adaptability and explosive power. It's as shapely as Marilyn with dimensions running 140 mm in the tip, 105 mm on the waist, and 130 mm in the caboose, and as balanced as Daniel LaRusso, Crane-Style against the Cobra Kai nemesis, Johnny Lawrence. Although, its sidecut is not as drastic as the Shaman, it provides a different style of all terrain shredding.

The turn radius runs 14, 17, and 20 meters respectively for its 156, 168, and 181 cm lengths. I'd categorize this ski under anyone looking for one ski to literally do a little bit of everything. If you like hitting little booters in the BC - no problem - with its balance and exceptional control, it's super fun and playful. If you run into groomers a lot in the Midwest and out East, it can handle it, and handle it well - holding edge on hard pack with surprising side to side quickness. If you make it out west a couple times a year and hope to stumble upon some blower conditions, or you want to hike a ridge you've had your eye on, then no need to demo a powder ski, ride your Nomads with pride and feel the solid planks keeping you confident on that precarious ridge, and floating you to the promised land.

The Nomad SFT is a lighter, more flexible version of the Nomad. It features Icelantic's soft Nollie Flex Core. It's a big mountain jib ski that allows skiers to take their front-side antics to the BC. One rider I spoke with on a lift was rocking the Marker Schizo binding on his SFTs and was grinning from ear to ear talking about how fun his set up was. He remarked, " . . . it has awesome flex for park days (and the Schizo adds ability to turn your traditional mount into a center mount (with a few key turns on the toe piece ) and even with the 105 mm underfoot, it's light enough to go back side on tree runs and throw down, and so easy and effortless when you want to carve around with your Grandma." I added Grandma.

If you feel the call of the mountain goat, and have spoken to him in your dreams, ask him why his cousin eats leather, and tell him to guide you on your journey to skiing nirvana with the 2012 Icelantic Nomad and Nomad SFT.

VestPac - Gadget Pac Born in the Mountains of Wyoming

VestPac - A little background . . .

VestPac, Inc. is the brainchild of Jackson, Wyoming native Scott Shepherd. While skiing Jackson Hole Scott realized that his hydration system constantly froze up on him and access to all the electronic items we can't live without were extremely cumbersome to get to even with today's advances in apparel. So, he took it upon himself to create an 'Underpac," as Scott describes it to alleviate these common problems.

While wearing his prototype skiing, he received countless comments on the invention from thirsty skiers and gear fumblers. Scott adapted his idea to fishing the rivers and lakes of Wyoming, then kayaking, Stand-Up Paddleboarding, biking, running, hiking, birding, shooting and well just generally being in the outdoors. VestPac was a finalist for "Best New Gear" award this year and at last month's International Sportsmen's Exposition in Salt Lake City the gadget Pac was a huge success, selling out of all on-hand Pacs by the end of the show.

VestPac's success is attributed to its comfortable form-fitting design, athletic grade construction built to move with you during the most vigorous activity, while the 3D Airmesh material is so flexible and soft, it barely feels like you are wearing it. As an "Underpack" VestPac can be worn underneath your ski jacket with no fear of being uncomfortable. No more frozen hydration tubes, frozen iPods and your favorite electronics' batteries last longer. The best part is that it can be switched out to accommodate any activity in about 20 seconds with its modular design. Using VestPac, has expanded its uses for me exponentially.

Some Ways I Have Personally Used my VestPacs . . .

First, while fly fishing I used the DriftPac to keep all of my flies, boxes, leaders, thermometer, forceps, lines and everything else easy to reach, and I was comfortable and hydrated standing in my waiters because of the 1 liter of water that was on my back. No need to use lanyards and other cryptic inventions to tote your gear, VestPac can do it, and do it well. With built in tippets and retractable zingers this front is definitely one of my favorites, and is sure to be a staple of the angler world in the months to come. Second, while kayaking I used the WilsonPac with VestPac's compact dry bags to hold my phone, GPS, camera, and iPod right on the front of my PFD using the Monostrap accessory. The best thing about the combination of drybag and VestPac is that the once dreaded camera or phone swim is a thing of the past when rolling your boat, or having to bail, because everything is secured, and VestPac's drybags are waterproof up to 10 feet! These are not the so-called "Dry Bags" you see that will keep your stuff dry from splashes, these are submergible bags, compact and made to work with VestPac fronts. There is even an mp3 bag with a 2.5mm jack and VestPac makes "Dry Buds," waterproof ear buds for your mp3 player.

Third, I started Stand-Up Paddleboarding last summer and realized right away the need for some sort of gadget pack to hold my phone, iPod and water. Moreover, a lot of the time I go out by myself with no place to keep my KEYS, and trust me people are hip to the old - leave the key on the front wheel or in your Thule rack somewhere - trick. Very few models of SUP boards have places to deck anything and wearing a backpack can be hot. Moreover, on windy days any extra baggage can work against you on SUP boards. I used the TetonPac, which becomes the utility, lifeline, and hydration necessary for staying on your SUP for extended periods of time worry-free.

True story: A friend broke his mast while windsurfing last summer. He was raging through the ocean at high speeds, hit a wave, and tried to stick a landing and wound up sticking his knee into part of the shattered mast. He was not prepared with any means of communicating to someone that he was in trouble. It was a "scorcher" that day, as he put it, and although he was experienced, he was too far out to swim against the current with a banged up knee. All he had on was his boardshorts, desperately trying to surf paddle back in with no luck. He waded around on his board for almost an hour before a fishing boat scooped him up thankfully.

A lot of this blunder was probably due to him not being prepared, and not respecting mother nature. He came out of it with a sunburn and a chipped knee cap, but having a radio, phone, or at least some water would have been a total lifesaver in that situation. I'm not saying that VestPac will save your life, but it may keep you calm when unforeseen accidents happen.

Fourth, using the VestPac is awesome for hiking - wearing it underneath your hiking pack is no problem at all. In fact it adds a little cushion to your load and keeps air circulating between the sweat-zone - the area between your back and your pack - with VestPac's Airmesh. I used the JacksonPac with its two pocket cinch flaps and I also strapped one to my dog Jack using the Monostrap just to see what other uses I could get out of this gadget pack. He pretty much goes with the flow and was totally fine with it. Now I just have to teach him to use the hydration hose and he'll be set.

Lastly, skiing with the GranitePac was one of those moments where you say to yourself, "Why didn't I think of that." It's so simple and yet so innovative at the same time. My iPod Touch did not freeze and go technicolor screen on me even at higher altitudes because it was close to my body. After hiking a ridge, I was noticeably dryer and cooler having the placement of the Pac circulating air on my back. Ski pass was easier to scan since the GranitePac has two see through vinyl pockets on the front. Unzip jacket a little bit, scan and I was on my way.

I even used my iPhone with the speakerphone on the chairlift just to push the boundaries of what my VestPac can do. I kind of felt like C3PO while doing it, and it was refreshingly easy to get to. The best way to use your smart phone with VestPac is to use VestPac's mp3 drybag with built in input - have your playlist dialed in on your smart phone and use the microphone equipped headphones that come with most smart phones now to switch from music to answering calls. Then when you get a call simply answer and use the mic on the headphones. A lot of apparel companies have mp3 pockets, but they freeze your phones and mp3 players and are a real pain to get to. VestPac is chest ready, easy access, and comfort all in one.

I would like to introduce you to Point 65 Degrees North Kayaks. Owner, Richard Ohman is a true innovator and has a knack for bringing in some of worlds most revered engineers to make his ideas a reality. Hall of Fame sea kayaker, Nigel Foster joined Point 65 in the latter part of 2007. He pioneered designs for many sea kayaks including The Rumour by Current Designs, but was unhappy with later versions of these boats. In early 2008, Nigel announced he was working with Point 65 and unveiled the Whisky 16 -- characterized by Nigel as a quick responsive touring boat that is easy enough to spin without edging, yet even quicker on edge - and thrives in rough conditions.

This past year Point 65 has been receiving notoriety for boats other than their world class touring fleet. If the name Magnus de Brito rings a bell at all, then you are definitely up on your engineering innovations of the last decade. Magnus has been involved in design projects for industry giants like Porsche, Intelligent Sound, and Pirelli. His Pirelli boat design won the prestigious Red Dot Design award for "Best of the Best" in 2009, and is responsible for streamlining parts of the new generation Porsche Carrera 997 and Carrera GT. With his extensive design experience in marine design technology - experience not usually available to kayak companies - Magnus has designed many of Point 65's kayaks, but his two modular kayak designs - the Tequila sit-on-top and the new for 2011 Martini sit-inside - are truly revolutionary to the kayak industry.

Point 65's Tequila and Martini . . .

2010 saw the Tequila enter the market with excitement, wonder, and apprehension. The ambivalence toward the Tequila was mainly due to the question of whether a modular take-apart kayak could still have the same stability and maneuverability that other sit-on-top kayaks are known for. The prevailing answer was a resounding yes, and then some. The Tequila not only tested amazingly well, but received countless accolades along the way. An ISPO Finalist for "Best New Hardgood," Red Dot Design Award Honorable Mention 2010, and Popular Science's prestigious 2010 "Best of What's New" winner to name a few.

It is by far the lightest sit-on-top kayak on the market (24.3 lbs per section) and maybe the feature that runs a close second to its ability to be taken apart, is the ability to add sections to convert the Tequila into a Tandem, a Thrandem, a Fourdem, or more as the guys at Point 65 illustrated at the 2010 Summer OR show. I'm sure if you were at the show, you saw 9 people paddling a 41' foot craft on the lake.

The possibilities are now endless for many people who once thought owning a kayak was impossible due to storage limitations, weight, cost, or convenience. There are other companies out there that make take apart or folding kayaks. Usually it takes quite a long time to put together all of those structure poles, inflate the boat, then clean it off before deflating it and trying to cram it back into the impossibly small bag they give you to store it in. The foldable kayaks are a joke - super heavy, and just plain terrible in terms of performance. The Tequila and Martini snap together in literally 10 seconds! 2011 introduces the Martini - the next innovation by Point 65 in the form of a take apart, sit inside kayak that, like the Tequila, can be made into a tandem by adding a mid-piece. During my time as a salesman at the retail level, I ran into countless customers that wanted a tandem kayak, however the first question they had was:

"If I wanted to take this boat out by myself, would I be able to paddle it solo?"

The answer is a resounding NO in most instances, and even when there is an adjustment to a tandem kayak's seat, paddling something that large by yourself is about as easy as pulling a semi in neutral. Well, maybe not that bad, but if you've tried to paddle a tandem you know it is extremely hard work and very frustrating. Further, the pain of loading a backbreaking 60+lb tandem kayak measuring 15+ feet in length is a painstaking process. I've done it, and it is no picnic.

Back by popular demand - another one of our team's RETAIL TIPS OF THE DAY. "If it's true then preach the truth all day long!" If a product has unique points that are specific to one, two, or a hundred customers, make sure you know those points. It is the easiest sale you will ever make. If a customer comes in looking for a take-apart kayak and you say, "Sorry, we don't have those." and he points to a Martini sitting on your wall, 9 times out of 10 he is going to walk out thinking what a rag-tag operation they are running here. 99 times out of 100, sales associates should have more knowledge than the customers. Of course there is that google-laden gearhead who knows the chine pitch, resin density, and the best color boat to match his eyes, so I am leaving him as the outlier. Check the points below for just a short list of perfect customers to match with either a Tequila or a Martini and get sellin' guys and gals.

Breakdown Points:

✓ People who are unable to lift heavy kayaks.

✓ People who live in apartments or condos with no place to store a kayak.

✓ People who can't put a rack on their car, or those unwilling, or unable to spend extra money on a pricey roof rack.

✓ People who want a tandem, but also want to paddle it solo.

✓ People with cottages and want a kayak that has the potential to handle multiple people - cousins, aunts, uncles, friends etc who are visiting.

✓ People who travel with an RV and want something compact.

✓ People who travel on vacations once or twice a year and want to ship their kayaks to where they are going to be, these kayaks can be shipped UPS in sections.

✓ And the list goes on. There are so many uses for these boats and I'm sure dealers and retailers can see the possibilities.

At last month's Paddlesport 2011 in the Garden State, our Point team witnessed the demand for these boats firsthand. Patrons and industry moguls were lined up before our team even arrived to get a look at the new Martini. All the boats that were brought to the event sold. Defining Action Sports The North Face Cryptic Line

How Do You Define Action Sports?

What is an action sport? As an avid outdoorsmen, I could give you my take on the question, but I wondered how someone totally uninvolved with the subject would perceive the words action sports. So, I emailed a former English professor that very question. This person was not involved in action sports, nor did they really follow any events like the X-Games that would give them any preconceived notions. This us simply an unbiased answer from a person who always has a way with words.

She answered,

"I guess I would categorize it as an activity, or sport that pushes the boundaries of something with existing prevalence, or perhaps creating a new genre. An evolution of a commonality by methods of reinvention; rethought styles with unique approaches that spark illustrations of faster, more intrepid pursuits . . . blanketed with adrenaline and passion. I think (Friedrich) Nietzche's concept of the 'will to power' in a way could lend itself to the ambitions of perceived action, sports participants. My personal thoughts on them (action sports participants) evoke images of young men and women striving to reach higher achievements than previously performed, or thought possible - a driving force, or spirit within an individual."

Wow, now that could be the best, and most complete, answer I could have received. I think she nailed it. The purpose of the question was to obviate any impressions that may seem to pigeon-hole action sports into an arbitrary class.

A variety of manufacturers brand themselves as solely ski companies, or solely snowboard companies, etc, which is fine and probably relevant to their pursuits in the industry. However, the good Professor makes no mention of what type of sport is considered an action sport. One could argue that athletes stomping tricks in urban, backyard settings, while others huck cliffs in the backcountry are one in the same.

The similarity lies in the aggressive inventiveness surrounding action sports. The differentiation exists in the development of characteristics within a sport, combining aspects of two or more sports, or starting something new altogether. Impartiality is king because, like it or not, the lines are blurred and companies realize that individuals in the action sports community are focused on quality, creative products, that are resourcefully rooted in the spirit to explore the outdoors.

The North Face is one company in particular that has produced bomber apparel for the some of the most core athletes since 1968. Now, TNF has taken their diligence a step further introducing an action sports collection inspired by the demands of skiers, snowboarders, and mountain bikers.

VF Outdoor Corporation Promotes Rendle to VP & Group President

TNF's parent company, VF Outdoor Corp (NYSE: VFC) produced higher than expected fourth quarter revenue thanks in part to a big push from the Outdoor and Action Sports Division. VF has taken many steps to ensure that TNF keeps this momentum going throughout 2011.

Recently, VF has made some changes to their corporate ladder. Steve Rendle whose previous title was President of VF Outdoor Americas was promoted to Vice President, VF Corporation and Group President, Outdoor & Action Sports Americas. He may need a larger business card. According to transworld.net, VF Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Eric Wiseman commented on the role of the Group President and what it means for VF.

“The creation of the Group President role streamlines our organizational structure in North America, much as we have done internationally over the years under Karl Heinz’s leadership,” said Wiseman. “It also provides opportunities for Steve (Rendle) . . . to extend (his) leadership capabilities to new businesses, while promoting greater communication and connectivity among our coalitions.”

For those who don't know, Steve Rendle may be as integral to TNF's success as the brand is to the industry. Rendle arrived at TNF in 1999 after working his way through the ranks at W.L. Gore and then running Asian manufacturer Youngone Corporation's sales and merchandising in the United States. After arriving at TNF, Rendle began a pursuit to bring back TNF's core values of product innovation. Equally important was refocusing TNF's distribution channels toward retailers that embodied what the brand stood for.

TNF / Vans 20% Global Revenue Increase, TNF Gets Cryptic and Olympic

VF's success in 2010 and TNF's growing market share of the outdoor apparel industry are testament to their vision, and the business model VF Outdoor incorporated after the acquisition. Combined, The North Face and Vans posted a global revenue increase of 20% (17% Americas, 32% Internationally) according to fourth quarter reports, and expectations are high for VF in 2011.

Earlier this month news broke that The North Face has formed an eight-year alliance with U.S. Freeskiing in anticipation of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) consideration of new action sports events for the 2014 Games. What does this mean for TNF? They will not only be the official supplier of U.S. Freeskiing Olympic competition outerwear until at least 2018, they will also have feature exposure at U.S. Freeskiing events like the U.S. Revolution Tour.

Moreover, the USSA will work closely with The North Face to develop signature events that support the rapid progression of freeskier athletes. With this inspiring news along with TNF's continuing advancement of their Cryptic collection this Spring with mountain bike apparel; their doesn't look to be a floor in site for this steadfast company.

TNF Signs Pros to Compliment Cryptic Collection of Action Sports Apparel

Pros and amateurs alike are pushing the limits and venturing just a little further outside of their comfort zones -- gaining confidence and entering new realms of free-ride exploration. Areas that were once off the grid, are now within range.

As proverbial pacesetters of the industry, TNF went out and signed some of the world's best to represent the most technically advanced gear on the mountain. Freeskier Magazine's 2010 Skier of the Year award winner, Tom Wallisch, AKA Pretzel Man, has joined the squad along with Mike Riddle and young-gun, Nick Martini.

The North Face: Cryptical Envelopment

A company that has been at the forefront of industry progressions is once again adding to their stellar lineup of sports apparel. The North Face's new Action Sports collection is sure to make an impact on the industry. Everyone from the seasoned pro free-rider to the weekend warrior can adopt TNF's ethos of Never Stop Exploring, and further embrace a company that has been outfitting seven peak summiteers, world-reknowned extreme athletes, and everyone in between since 1968.

Amphibio Technology Edges Elan Skis Closer to Yet Another Podium of Industry Innovation

Here is a sneak peak at Elan's Amphibio innovation set to debut autumn 2012.

Soon, US regional reps will be debuting these new sticks at Test Fests all over the nation. Elan's Midwest rep, has provided an early demo of these modern marvels and the fix is in . . . these are going to definitely shake up the industry.

Just when you thought rocker/camber combos have exhausted all the possible options, Elan delivers the Amphibio, designed with a rockered outside edge and traditionally cambered inside edge, giving the skis more stability on the inside edge and fluid carving on the outside edges making them feel safe and effortless.

However, this also means that these skis have a designated right ski and left ski. So, taking note of the eyesore, Right-Ski-Sticker, (that ski shops throw on your newly mounted planks) may be more important than you think in the not-so-distant future. Although deciphering which is left and which is right is pretty straight forward when looking at the top sheet graphic. (Check out the video at the end of this article to see what I mean.)

The Specs, Facts, & Stats

So before you wander into your local ski shop next autumn (2011) and ask about the new Elan Amphibio I'm here to spit out some specs, facts, and stats behind the idea.

Like most Elan skis, the Amphibio have wood-core construction with the two higher-end models featuring double titanium construction into an asymmetic layer. The reason for a necessary left and right ski, is the difference in edge design. They have inside edges that are designed with a more traditional camber, which result in excellent edge grip, power transfer, and effortless linking up of turns, while the outside edges have a slightly rockered design, allowing easier turn initiation and flotation.

So, why is this so revolutionary considering the ski industry has gone rocker/camber crazy the last decade? When starting to carve a turn your inside edge is pushing hard, making it the predominant "edge setter" depending which way you are turning.

For example, Powder McGee is starting to make a left turn, he is pushing hard on his right ski's inside edge to engage that edge, while making an effort of rolling over and planting his right ski on the outside edge, with that right ski slightly in front.

The concept that was behind this was -- and I am speculating on the idea behind this engineering -- was to make it easier to link up turn after turn. Easy right? Everybody wants this.

Now Powder McGee must transition into a turn to the left. The advantage to having a slightly rockered outside edge is that it doesn't catch quite as much and by first planting that inside edge and being able to roll over further onto that outside edge will give you a more stable and fluid feeling motion: linking turns back and forth.

It sort of reminiscent of training wheels on a two-wheel bicycle, making contact with the pavement just in case you need it. It's fantastic.
When actually transitioning from turn to turn it feels like you are already half-way there, because of the traditional camber on the inside edge.

RETAIL SKI TIP OF THE DAY: Classify your customer . . . .

In other words, this ski is the Confidence Booster Ski sir! TIP: Retail ski salesmen and women out there: Name at least one or two models a year the Confidence Booster Ski, and I promise you, that it will close the sale.

Why wouldn't it? The Amphibio 12 and 14 are perfect for this title. There are a lot of different skier demographics that this line of skis can appeal to, but if you get a Dad that rolls in your shop that used to ski hard when he was younger and now he skis with his kids. Twin tips scare him and all the facts about twin tips being all mountain skis now and blah har blah doesn't sway him. The guy is still rockin' Frogskins, but the new limited editions so he likes timeless products in new packages. He used to ski on 215cm concrete slabs.

Then he'll probably drift into a ski-war story that may, or may not involve, Yvon Chouinard, an American flag bandanna, moonshine, a relentless paperboy, a guy name Lane, and a one-legged ski race. You will quickly determine that this ski veteran has clumped together 3 recent articles he read, and the plot from John Cusack's, 1980s ski movie, Better Off Dead. No matter. You can tell that the old Dodge still has some gas in the tank, but his knees are shot from too many icy bump runs.

In comes the C.B.S., not to be confused with the network that brings you C.S.I.

Tell him that you have the ski for him. The Amphibio 12 is a good price for the money, name some specs, yada yada, but he will be hesitant, then quickly show him some bindings, which are on average $200+ a pop. And then tell him, guess what, bindings come with those skis I was just talking about. Retail associate says, "This ski practically skis for you, it is so easy to link up turns and I know because I skied them last winter at Test Fest and they are the real deal."

If you want something fun and playful, that you do not have to be on top of all day long, and will finally give you the fortitude to take your 46 year-old wooden Lampinen L-10s out back and put a bullet in em, then this is the ski for you.This is the Confidence Booster Ski. Trust me it will work, because it's true! Skis now, are nothing like they used to be and chances are they will change that person's life for the better. If he takes them great - if not fine - but whatever you do, DO NOT become bitter, or over confident by trying to up the ante with an add on sale of roller skis.

Disclaimer: Please do not post on here that you tried this tip and it didn't work, but fail to mention that your customer was some "easy-on-the-eyes gal or guy that only came in your store to ask for directions, but you were so thrown back that you went directly into the Confidence Booster Ski sales pitch, or, on second thought do tell that story.

A Little History

Historically, Elan's Slovenia based manufacturing facility has generated technological ingenuity, and supplied it to the masses. Producing industry standards: designing the first shaped ski, and the first integrated ski binding system, which in my opinion is still the best integrated system on market.

Moving forward with their ever-evolving innovations, Elan introduced Waveflex technology in 2005, which according to Elan reps, the concept can be likened to corrugated cardboard, meaning the ski still has great torsional rigidity, (side-to-side), but the Waveflex provides an easy longitudinal flex for the ski without sacrificing performance at high speeds.

Back to the Facts

The Amphibio will be available in four models next year. This line, similar to Elan's Fusion Series from years past will be directed toward all mountain skiers, which encompasses about 80% of the people in the lift lines these days.

So much technology has gone into these skis, so if you think the price is a little on the high side, take these features into consideration. Amphibio Technology, full side walls, Waveflex Technology, Integrated Binding System, Ti Mod, Wood Core. That is a lot of engineering and research, not to be overshadowed by Elan's manufacturing quality that is tops in the industry. That is why companies like Nordica, Black Diamond, Head, and 4FRNT all have their skis made in Elan's Slovenia manufacturing plant.

Amphibio Models:

Amphibio WaveFlex 12 MSRP: $799.99 USD

The 12 seemed like enough ski for me, but I am only 170 lbs. High speeds, quick turns, and bumps were a snap. The rocker camber combo on the edges put a big smile on my face when I had to make a pretty abrupt turn to divert a bomber out of control. You know those skis you try out once in a while at Test Fests that you just think about turning and you are there. This is the ticket folks.

Amphibo Insomnia Women's model MSRP: $799.99 USD

Nice cosmetic on it because women from my experience selling skis, looks are a big factor in which ski women gravitate toward.

Amphibio Waveflex 14 MSRP: $999.99 USD

The 14 was just as gnarly with a beefier din and waste with set at slightly below the 82XTi model. Geared toward on-piste skiing. Really a perfect width for the masses. Most skiers do not anticipate skiing three feet of fresh on a daily basis, and when I found myself in some ungroomed crud and ice, the 14 plowed through it effortlessly due to the early rise in the and camber design. I thought that this would make a really great Beer League race ski even.

Amphibio Waveflex 82XTi MSRP $999.99-$1099 USD

The XTi was stiff by Waveflex standards, but not overpowering. I was definitely hitting Mach 5 before I was done with my run. This is Elan's all mountain ripper that was, as I said before, almost too much ski for me at my weight, but was still a very nice ride.

So, ski industry employees be on the lookout for the Elan Amphibio lineup this winter at Test Fests everywhere, and consumers anticipate this modern marvel when it invades your local ski shop in autumn of 2011.
