NEW WEB LINKS TO SURF
Here are the new, surfy links to scope out. They'll be added to the list in the Cyber Surf Shop eventually. This list features almost 200 surfboard maker's homepages and other resources for wave-sliding.

Ola Surfboards This Web site is for a surfboard shop in Italy, just in case.

Wave Skater is a new body board design with a slightly different looking, channeled hull and rails.

Surf Maps, is you guessed it, a site loaded with maps to surfing coasts, but you have to buy them.

The Surfer's Journal ran a story about some surfboards built by an industrial designer that are totally alien looking and work in the waves. Check them out at Thomas Meyerhoffer's web site.

Also from the most recent Surfer's Journal issue, a new shipping container for surfboards is being made called SurfboardPack.

Erie Peeples surfboard auction

Erie Peeples, a standout New Smyrna Beach surfer and well-known surfboard shaper and designer, has some very special custom surfboard packages available for a very good cause.

Peeples has created six limited edition surfboard packages to be auctioned on eBay to benefit the American Lung Association of Florida and Dollars for Scholars.

Bidding at this eBay site starts April 20 and will run through May 1. The auction represents a unique chance to get a high quality, one of a kind surfboard and help a good cause. Each auction winner also receives a special package of materials including stickers, a T-shirt and photo autographed by Peeples, a private surfing lesson with Erie, a DVD of the design and production process of your surfboard and a leather binder.

The boards can be viewed at surfboardsforthecure.org along with more information about Erie Peeples, surfing and the American Lung Association. There are a few pictures of the boards at the bottom of this entry, too.

The proceeds from the winning bids will benefit the American Lung Association of Florida. The American Lung Association fights lung disease in all its forms, with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. To learn more about the association's programs in Florida, visit lungfla.org or call Susan Richmond or Larry Glinzman at (386) 255-6447.

This is Daytona Beach, another Surf City, USA -- Florida style. And when the waves start hopping, surfers of all shapes and sizes start popping up everywhere. Here's a celebration of the action that ensues in a slide show created by The News-Journal's award-winning photographer, Jim Tiller. News-Journal photographer David Massey covered the Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic held in Flagler Beach on Nov. 11 and put together a slide show, complete with surfing action, the scene at the boardwalk and the sounds of the surf and judges' announcements, adding up to an experience that'll put you right there.

Seabreeze High School's Kyle Altes of Ormond Beach was out Oct. 28 enjoying some small waves. Nothing but knee-highs really, but Altes was stoked, tucking in tight into little barrels, adding a little English to some rides, like a little lean, just to stay trimmed for a bit more fun. It was a Tuesday twilight in early February when, suddenly, the waves turned on. This scene happened just out of view of the people behind their wheels at the intersection of A-1A and Granada Boulevard.

PART 2: WINTER WAVES
It has not been a boring winter so far. We've had some nice rides, haven't we? So don't listen to those surfers who always mope around saying, "We never get any waves." Send them to this site to see the highlights from this winter and fall. All but one of these shots are by the big lenses of The News-Journal's photographers. And get out there and surf!

PART 1: LOCAL TUBES
This photo feature highlights some of the best surf shots News-Journal photographers have taken recently. And it ought to remind you how good the waves can get in the Sunshine State, too. It's proof positive, Floridians do get tubed!

Ride the wild surf. The waves were big. The surfers were many. And at times surfing north of the Daytona Beach Pier got a bit crowded the morning of Sept. 21. But who cares? Did I mention the waves were big?

This surfer was so busy getting shacked by Tropical Storm Ernesto in New Smyrna Beach on Aug. 31, he never paddled in to give his name to our photo journalist.

So take note, local surfers. We're watching! If you get a sweet ride when an official looking camera is pointed at you, it never hurts to introduce yourself.
