FOX NEWS - Dec 15 - Actress Ashley Madison Myrick, has filed a lawsuit against online dating site Ashley Madison for the “humiliation’ she has endured over having the same name as the site that promotes infidelity. She wants the site to change their name and claims that the Web site AshleyMadisonbio.com is connected to the infidelity site and features her photo without permission. But Pop Tarts has exclusively obtained a $1M counter-suit filed by Ashley Madison (the Web site) against Ashley Madison (the actress). According to their suit, they don’t even own the domain AshleyMadsionbio.com and have had the infamous “Ashley Madison” name trademarked since 2002 whereas Myrick only adopted the moniker as a “stage name” in 2005. The affair matchmakers are now suing the actress for using their trademark to “inappropriately garner goodwill” to support her acting career.
OPW INTERVIEW - Nov 23 - Wayne Stillerman was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 23 years ago. The disease and his recent divorce became his inspiration for Datebility.com, which he launched in early 2009. His site caters to daters within the disability community. – Jenn Rubin Listen to the interview Why did you want to start Datebility? I have multiple sclerosis, and I was diagnosed 23 years ago. MS is a progressive disease, and mine progressed to the point where I was having trouble walking. Several years ago, I found myself going through a divorce. I was single and on my own. I went on traditional dating websites, and I didn’t find them to my liking. I felt like I was being prejudged based on my disability. I wanted a place I could feel comfortable exposing my disability and telling people about it. Can you estimate the size of site’s membership base? We’re currently closing in on 500 members. How has the site been customized for the disability community? We have bloggers that are from the disability community who understand our members. There is Gary Karp. He’s a paraplegic, but he’s also an author, keynote speaker and expert juggler.
MARKETING WEEK - Nov 18 - eHarmony.co.uk has been slammed by the advertising watchdog for misleading claims in its television campaign. Five viewers complained to the Advertising Standards Authority to challenge the claim that 2% of US newlyweds met via the site. eHarmony said the 2% figure was extrapolated from an online study of 7,000 respondents undertaken by an independent market research company. The ASA ruled eHarmony’s ad was misleading because it had made an “absolute claim” that suggested a “definitive figure” of marriages based on an extrapolated 2007 online survey.
OTTAWA CITIZEN - Nov 14 - Since its launch last February, CougarLife has attracted ~ 300,000 members and, according to Noel Biderman, co-owner and president of the online dating network Avid Life Media, "we're poised to make millions. I don't think we've ever launched anything with this much traction this soon." The website has more young men registered than women (52% compared to 48%) predominantly because, says Biderman, older women have been slower to accept their new role as desirable beings than young men have been to "pounce on the idea of being with an older woman."
CTV.CA - Nov 14 - Cheating can lead to an improved relationship, says Noel Biderman, the founder of AshleyMadison.com, a dating site that boasts the tagline, "Life is Short. Have an Affair." Ashley Madison has grown rapidly in the last seven years, to ~4M users, and now Biderman has written a book "Cheaters Prosper: How Infidelity Will Save the Modern Marriage." "If you look at the culture in France, or in Japan, infidelity rates are extremely high there, yet divorce rates are extremely low", said Biderman. Dr. Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist and author of "Bad Boys: Why We Love Them, How to Live with Them and When to Leave Them", disagrees that cheating strengthens relationships. Cheating "can make a dull marriage more exciting but in the end, most marriages suffer terribly from cheating and ultimately break apart because of the loss of respect and trust", she said.
