Nearly a thousand attended the protest in downtown New York City, which commemorated ACT UP's 20th anniversary of AIDS activism and direct action.

After marching through various downtown sites, the activists converged on the Wall Street Bull statue in the financial district. Chanting, "No more bull! Health care for all," the group brought out 50 body bags, symbolizing the 50 Americans who die each day due to lack of health insurance. 27 people laid down in the street in front of traffic and were arrested by police.

The protesters met at Federal Plaza at noon Thursday and headed down Broadway. The group stopped at five sites of government and corporate power historically responsible for thousands of AIDS deaths and for the United States' current health care crisis. At City Hall, they demanded that the city expand access to health care for all poor people and people with HIV.

They stopped at Trinity Church, the site of ACT UP's first public action 20 years ago, to remember those who died of AIDS and/or lack of health care.

The crowd swelled at the New York Stock Exchange, as call-and-response chants condemned health care profiteering by insurance and health care companies. The protest concluded at the Wall Street Bull statue, as the fervent group observed those engaging in civil disobedience.

ACT UP, the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, was founded in March, 1987. Gay & Lesbian Center
Date: March 28, 2007

LOS ANGELES -- Few people find it more difficult to find steady and rewarding jobs than transgender men and women. Facing a complex and daunting combination of transgenderphobia, homophobia and gender discrimination in the workplace, many transgender adults accept low-level and low-paying jobs or-worse yet-turn to sex work to survive.

But a new program launched this month by the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center is helping transgender women and men -- especially those engaged in sex work -- develop the skills and confidence to find satisfying jobs with employers that have cultures and policies that are friendly to transgender people.

The Center's Transgender Job Placement Program, one of only three such programs nationwide (the others are in New York City and San Francisco), offers a wide range of services that aim to prepare transgender people for the job application and interview process, including how to address questions and issues related to their gender identity.

"For example, a client may be transitioning from male to female, but have a work history under a male name," says Lynn Bridges, a transgender woman tapped to head the Center's program. "Others might not have documents they need for work -- like a driver's license or Social Security card -- that reflect their current gender identity. What we do is sit down with each of these clients and discuss various options with them -- ranging from seeking employment at businesses we know to have supportive policies to possibly putting off their transition until they're securely employed. We even coach them on how to respond to interview questions about their gender identity or transitioning process."

But the program also extends well beyond job-placement assistance, including offering case management services and referrals to numerous support services both inside and outside the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.

"Sometimes before we can even begin talking about resumes and job interviews, we need to get clients medical care at our HIV/AIDS clinic, into a drug treatment program or even find a place to live," says Bridges. "Others need help from the Center's Legal Services Department to legally change their birth names. And others may just need help polishing their resumes and tips for job interviews, and we're ready to provide that as well."

Funding for the program came from a first-of-its kind grant from the City of West Hollywood aimed at reducing HIV and STD rates among transgender sex workers. Helping transgender people get off the street and into programs that build their skills for the workplace directly -- and immediately -- lowers their risks for contracting HIV, says Susan Cohen, director of Health Education and Prevention at the Center.

"The HIV infection rate among transgender sex workers is already alarmingly high, so anything we can do to help transgender men and women who aren't infected lower their risks is extremely important," explains Cohen. "And if clients are already HIV-positive, we can still help them build self-esteem and improve their lives by helping them give up sex work and get rewarding jobs-and get them into HIV medical care at the Center."

Bridges knows firsthand the health risks that come from sex work -- she contracted HIV during her many years as a transgender sex worker in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and also spent time in prison on charges related to sex work.

"Although I had a good education, I foolishly accepted the notion that the only work available for me was prostitution or working in a drag show," says Bridges, who, after being incarcerated, has worked in a career development program from the Clark County, Nevada, School District and in L.A. as a program director at the Center for Health Justice. "I worked the streets for years. And now I know that there were other options for me -- just as I know that there are other options for transgender women and men in our community."

About the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center

The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center provides a broad array of services for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, welcoming nearly a quarter-million client visits from ethnically diverse youth and adults each year. Through its Jeffrey Goodman Special Care Clinic and on-site pharmacy, the Center offers free and low-cost health, mental health, HIV/AIDS medical care and HIV/STD testing and prevention. The Center also offers legal, social, cultural, and educational services, with unique programs for seniors, families and youth, including a 24-bed transitional living program for homeless youth. "Global Groove: Live" becomes the 28th volume in the Global Groove CD series, with many music highlights taken directly from the Global Groove Tour, including the exclusive new dance mix of the multiple Grammy Award winning song,
"Not Ready To Make Nice."

<u3:p></u3:p>"David has once again delivered an upbeat mix that will go down as one of the classic Global Groove CDs," says Centaur's Chief Operating Officer, Jamie Baxter. "The track selection is a perfect blend of new songs and familiar favorites, and there is no question the dance artists included are among the best in the business."

<u3:p></u3:p>The similar philosophy and long-standing relationship that David Knapp has with Centaur is truly the magic behind every one of his compilation mixes. David is not restricted to one style of music, and his sets are in small ways catered to his audience, always offering his crowd something that makes them feel recognized and sprinkling in tracks that people already know and love. Not without his signature beats and diva-driven vocals, David has constructed his new "Global Groove: Live" CD with this philosophy in mind, including exclusive songs and mixes for added enjoyment.

<u3:p></u3:p>"Global Groove has become a gay household name I am proud to represent," says Dj David Knapp. "The brand is successful thanks to the quality of the music and Djs. The Global Groove series is the best opportunity a Dj has to bring dance music to so many different people in the gay community."

<u3:p></u3:p>"Global Groove: Live" features highly recognized exclusive tracks that are re-energized into dance mixes, including the recent Grammy-winning Dixie Chicks' original, "Not Ready To Make Nice," and the Billy Davis classic , "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher." Also featured are Billboard #1 songs "Party People" and "It's Not Right But It's Okay," and new songs from six international #1 artists, including Sonique, Pepper MaShay, Offer Nissim, Suzanne Palmer and Joi Cardwell.

<u3:p></u3:p>The official release date for "Global Groove: Live" is April 17 and will be available in stores nationwide, including Virgin Megastore, and online at www.centaurmusic.com. With the addition of the Global Groove Tour in 2004, Centaur raised the bar and created the most extensive club tour promotion for the most recognized gay consumer brand in music. In January 2007, Centaur also announced that they would produce a Spring and Fall segment, with Djs David Knapp and Kimberly S featured for Spring.<u3:p>

</u3:p>Each venue hosting the Global Groove Tour will be outfitted with prizes to give away, and each person who attends will receive a special gift bag that includes items from the Global Groove Tour Sponsors. Ruby Ordenana, also know as Ruby Rodriguez, a 27-year-old Latina transgender woman was found strangled with knife-like cuts and scars on her arms in the early morning hours of March 16 in San Francisco's Mission District.

“Ruby's murder is not an exception. Gender non-conforming young people – who have often been shut out of employment, housing, and safe environments because of their gender identity or expression – are dying at a rate of about one every three months,” said Riki Wilchins, Executive Director of the Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPAC). “We mourn the tragic loss of yet another young life.”

Ruby's body was found in the same area where another transgender woman was beaten and raped last summer. According to friends, Ruby, a Nicaraguan immigrant who was involved in sex work, was pulling her life together and attending support groups and English language classes.

Since 1995, over 50 young people aged 30 and under have been violently murdered by assailants who targeted them because they did not fit stereotypes of masculinity or femininity. In December 2006,GenderPAC released the groundbreaking human rights report “50 Under 30: Masculinity and the War on America's Youth” to document this tide of fatal violence and the key demographics of its victims and their assailants.

In the course of the year that the report was researched and published, three additional murders of victims that fit the “50 Under 30” profile were reported in Memphis, Phoenix and Nicetown (PA).

"These young victims were almost all Black or Latina, transgender or gay, biologically male, and murdered in attacks of extraordinary violence,” added Wilchins. “Ruby's murder fits this sad pattern.”

If the investigation of Ordenana's murder follows the profile of victims in the “50 Under 30” report, it is most likely to go unsolved. 54% of the deaths documented in the report remain unsolved, as compared with 31% for all homicides nationally.

Ordenana's murder came the same week as the introduction of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (LLEHCPA) into Congress, the long-awaited bill that would give the Justice Department the power to investigate and prosecute bias-motivated violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

"The LLEHCPA is necessary in moving our country toward a society where hate crimes are unacceptable, and where everyone’s most basic human rights are protected: life, liberty, and the expression of self without fear of violence,” said Wilchins. “We urge Congress to remember its commitment to protect all Americans from bias-motivated violence, and to remember Ruby Ordenana, by supporting this bill.”

Murder cases in the "50 Under 30" report that were classified as hate crimes were solved nearly one-and-a-half times more often than those that were not. 72% of the report’s cases were not so classified, despite the extremely violent nature of the crimes (many deaths combined stabbing, beating, strangling and shooting).

The annual FBI Hate Crimes Statistics report documents assaults motivated by race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability. According to the “50 Under 30” report, if murders based on the victim’s gender identity or expression were included in the data, they would outweigh every other category except race.

The “50 Under 30” report is available online at www.gpac.org/press to assist reporters and policy-makers in identifying victims from their regions. http://www.gpac.org/workplace/2007lobbyday.html

About GenderPAC
The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition (GenderPAC) works to ensure that classrooms, communities, and workplaces are safe places for every person regardless of whether they fit stereotypes for masculinity and femininity. This represents an increase from 66 percent in August 2002, when heterosexual adults were asked the same survey question.

In contrast, when asked how they think ‘other sports fans would feel’ toward an openly gay sports figure, 72 percent believe that ‘others’ would have less favorable opinions. This measure, however, has decreased from 2002, when nearly 80 percent revealed that they felt ‘others’ would have a less favorable opinion.

These are some of the highlights of a nationwide survey of 2,510 U.S. adults conducted online between March 6 and 16, 2007 by Harris Interactive, a worldwide market research and consulting firm, in conjunction with Witeck-Combs Communications, Inc., a strategic public relations and marketing communications firm with special expertise in the GLBT market.

"Openly gay and lesbian athletes have become far more visible in the nation’s major media with the ’coming out’ of WNBA player Sheryl Swoopes and the very recent publication of the New York Times best-seller “Man in the Middle” by former NBA pro, John Amaechi," said Bob Witeck, CEO of Witeck-Combs Communications. “Not only does public acceptance of gay athletes seem to be on the rise, but there’s slight progress in feelings that others are becoming more accepting as well.”

Methodology
  <u2:p></u2:p><u3:p></u3:p><u1:p></u1:p>
This survey was conducted online by Harris Interactive in collaboration with Witeck-Combs Communications within the United States between March 6 and 14, 2007 among 2,510 adults (aged 18 and over) of whom 2,037 indicated they are heterosexual. Figures for age, sex, race, education, region and income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

All surveys are subject to several sources of error. These include: sampling error (because only a sample of a population is interviewed); measurement error due to question wording and/or question order, deliberately or unintentionally inaccurate responses, nonresponse (including refusals), interviewer effects (when live interviewers are used) and weighting.

With one exception (sampling error) the magnitude of the errors that result cannot be estimated. There is, therefore, no way to calculate a finite "margin of error" for any survey and the use of these words should be avoided.

With pure probability samples, with 100 percent response rates, it is possible to calculate the probability that the sampling error (but not other sources of error) is not greater than some number. With a pure probability sample of 2,510 one could say with a ninety-five percent probability that the overall results would have a sampling error of +/-2 percentage points. However, that does not take other sources of error into account. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

<u2:p></u2:p>About Witeck-Combs Communications, Inc.
  <u3:p></u3:p><u1:p></u1:p>
<u2:p></u2:p>Witeck-Combs Communications, Inc. is the nation’s premier strategic marketing communications firm, specializing in reaching the gay and lesbian consumer market. Titled the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 (LLEHCPA), this bill is an appropriate and measured response to the unrelenting and under-addressed problem of violent hate crimes committed against individuals based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability.

The following statement can be attributed to Judy Shepard, Executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and mother of Matthew Shepard:

''The reintroduction of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (LLEHCPA) in the House of Representatives last night marks a very important moment for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community. For far too long violence motivated by hatred against GLBT individuals has gone unrecognized by the Federal Government as well as many local agencies.

The LLEHCPA will provide local law enforcement with the added resources and support needed for investigating and prosecuting serious hate crimes that are not currently included in existing law. The investigation of Matthew's murder and the trial of his killers cost Albany County in Wyoming more than $150,000. This unplanned financial burden forced the Sheriff's Department to furlough five of its employees. If the LLEHCPA had been the law of the land in 1998, this reduction in vital staff could have been averted, while still ensuring that justice was served for my son.

As citizens of this great country, we have an opportunity right now to ensure that this vital piece of legislation is enacted. Since Matthew was killed in 1998 for being gay, almost 10,000 violent acts of hate against individuals based on their sexual orientation have been reported to the authorities. Whether it is for Matthew or for the victims of the thousands of other violent hate crimes that have taken place over the years, I urge the GLBT community and its allies to make the passage of this bill a top priority. Please contact your representative today to ask them to co-sponsor the LLEHCPA or thank them if they have already signed up. We all have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of millions, please act today.''

For information on how to contact your congressman and to see if they are already a co-sponsor of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 please visit: http://www.matthewshepard.org/.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their 21-year-old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998. Each scrapbook contains 18 touching stories along with photographs of gay couples, children, and family members. One parent of a gay child, Annette Gross of PFLAG Indianapolis says of the stories and the amendment, "Why can't people love who they want to love?"

In addition, each scrapbook comes with a personal introduction letter, encouraging members of the legislature to vote against banning marriage equality.

"I hope they read them. It brings a human element to something they've been debating academically," says Sarah Patterson, also a PFLAG Indianapolis member.

Patterson notes a trend that could prove damaging for Indiana that would be worsened by anti-gay legislation like this bill -- the "brain drain" of young gay people leaving the state for more gay-friendly regions.

PFLAG members are testifying this week before legislators, telling their stories as straight allies of GLBT family members and friends, and why Indiana should avoid banning marriage equality. "Many of our public leaders and legislators do not accept gay people ... and many who are accepting lack the political courage to take a stand for gay people and against discrimination," adds Steve Neff, a PFLAG father. "Do you ever hear an old politician or the family of a politician speaking with pride that they opposed civil rights or equal rights for women?"

The stories can be read at PFLAG Indianapolis' website (http://www.indypflag.org/)

About PFLAG
Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is the nation's premier grassroots organization committed to the civil rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) persons. The new GLCVB program helps connect gay-welcoming destinations and services to LGBT meeting planners, tour operators and travel agents, the LGBT media, and consumers around the world.

GLCVB is positioned to become the "global crossroads" of LGBT meetings, conferences and events. Event details and contact information from nearly 100 LGBT meetings and events have already been compiled and distributed to partner destinations. This resource is updated monthly. According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, construction of buildings consumes 40% of the world's total energy. Now with the dangers of global warming, 'Hybrid Living'-- the co-existence of activities and lifestyles, inseparably spooling together -- is of ultimate importance. In addition, Rastra(R), RVPS's building material of choice, is a fire and earthquake resistant, sound proof, lightweight material made up of 85% recycled materials that might have lain forever in landfills.

"Joy Silver and RainbowVision are the nation's first and leading developer of communities for the second 50 years for the LGBT population and their friends," states Ms. King, "and now they have gone 'green.' I'm pleased to work with Joy and everyone at RainbowVision Palm Springs to develop a state-of-the-art fitness center and spa, and exhibition tennis court in the unique RainbowVision-designed green community planned for Palm Springs."

RainbowVision Palm Springs, to be located on 13 acres of mountain-view land at East Palm Canyon Drive and Gene Autry Trail, will open their first information booth at the 2007 Kraft Nabisco LPGA Championship March 29th through April 1, at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. Interviews, as well as Shake radio remotes, will take place at the booth where fully refundable reservation deposits will be accepted. In addition, RVPS representatives will attend the LLT production of the Dinah Faire Golf Tournament to be played at Woodhaven Country Club on Friday and are sponsoring the LLT produced concert on Saturday night.

"We like being the first to materialize this elegant green dream, a combination of space, lifestyle and landscape, and now we have the additional honor of Billie Jean's presence -- for who better represents 'first -- again' than Billie Jean King, both in her reign as a great tennis champion, and as a social activist," states Joy Silver, President and CEO of RainbowVision California. "We enjoy her Fitness Center & Spa at RainbowVision Santa Fe, and in addition to her fitness center in Palm Springs, Billie Jean has designed a special outdoor exhibition tennis court. We are going to have some serious fun with that!"

Other members of the Palm Springs Green Team include developer representatives, Desert Green Builders, and exclusive leasing agents, Classic Homes Inc., who can be reached at 877-795-7555, ext. 2. Since that time, a number of New York municipalities, including New York City, Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca, Nyack, Rochester, and Brighton, as well as Westchester County, have similarly publicly confirmed that, consistent with the marriage recognition rule, these municipal governments will respect marriages of same-sex couples validly performed outside the State.

On August 23, 2006, three purported Westchester County residents sued Spano, claiming that he did not have the right to issue his executive order. On November 30, 2006, Lambda Legal intervened in the case on behalf of Westchester County couple Michael Sabatino and Robert Voorheis, who married in Canada where same-sex couples may legally wed.

“Today’s decision takes away any doubt that we are who we have always said we are: a married couple,” said Sabatino. “It’s so freeing to have our relationship honored for what it is in the community where we live and make our life together as a married couple.”

Public and private employers across New York are respecting marriages of same-sex couples in the state, as are numerous corporations that conduct business in New York. Lambda Legal worked with John Galanti to obtain spousal health insurance coverage for his spouse, John Hotchkiss, from Galanti’s employer the Town of Chili. Further, insurance companies such as CIGNA, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Company and Health Economics Group, have confirmed that they will respect marriages between same-sex couples for purposes of spousal health and dental coverage.

Lambda Legal has been a leader in the fight for respecting same-sex relationships in New York. In June of 2004, for example, Lambda Legal convinced automobile insurance providers in New York including Geico, State Farm, Allstate, and now many others including Traveler’s Insurance, to confirm that same-sex couples who are validly married will receive family coverage and premium rates, if requested, on the same marital basis that apply to other married policyholders. Lambda Legal also sought marriage for same-sex couples in New York in its historic lawsuit, Hernandez v. Robles.

Judge Joan B. Lefkowitz entered her decision in Godfrey et al v. Spano earlier today.

Alphonso David is Lambda Legal’s lead attorney on Godfrey et al v. Spano with Lambda Legal Senior Counsel Susan L. Sommer. Jeffrey S. Trachtman and Norman C. Simon of the New York City law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP are co-counsel on the case.

# # #

Mark Roy: 212-809-8585 ext. 267; mroy@lambdalegal.org.

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

Read Related Articles:

Illinois Becomes Battleground for Gay Rights

Same-Sex Marriage Gains Support

The Quest for Gay Rights Continues

Sign up for the OutOnTheNet E-mail Newsletter...

Add to: | del.cio.us | digg | yahoo!

Sign up for the OutOnTheNet e-mail newsletter:

The officers, who are all lesbian or gay, called on Congress to repeal the law, and demanded that General Pace apologize for his remarks.

COL Stewart Bornhoft, USA (Ret.); CAPT Joan E. Darrah, USN (Ret.); CAPT Robert D. Dockendorff, USNR (Ret.); Chaplain (COL) Paul W. Dodd, USA (Ret.); CAPT Sandra Geiselman, USNR (Ret.); COL E. A. Leonard, USA (Ret.); and CAPT Robert Michael Rankin, USN (Ret.) issued their statement on Friday morning.

"Our community has a long history of serving our country in the armed forces," the group said. "Today, there are more than 65,000 lesbian and gay troops on duty. Another one million gay and lesbian veterans, including the seven of us, have served in our fighting forces. General Pace's remarks dishonor that service, as does the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' law. General Pace must offer an immediate and unqualified apology for his remarks and Congress must take action to repeal the ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans who want to serve our country."

The highly-decorated officers each served more than 20 years, and several considerably longer. They have earned scores of awards, honors and commendations during their careers. Four served in the Vietnam War. They have served as company commanders, helicopter pilots, medical officers, commanding officers, psychologists, chaplains, combat engineers, platoon leaders, infantry officers, supply corps officers and intelligence officers.

"Does General Pace believe we are immoral, or that our service was unacceptable?" the group asked. "Does he appreciate the sacrifice and dedication of every patriot in our armed forces, regardless of their sexual orientation? As military leaders, we never discounted the enormous contribution that every service member brought to our armed forces. General Pace should do no less, and owes an apology to our men and women on the frontlines and their families."

"Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is enormously proud of these stellar officers," said C. Dixon Osburn, the group's executive director. "These seven, who stand on behalf of one million gay veterans now living in the United States, are irrefutable proof that lesbian and gay patriots have made valuable contributions to our fighting forces. They have commanded companies, advised government leaders, fought on the ground and directed troops from the air. It was their outstanding performance and dedication to our country, not their sexual orientation, that made all the difference."

For more information on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and biographies of the officers, please visit http://www.sldn.org/.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network is a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' and related forms of intolerance. This 15 city nationwide tour, presented by Logo, kicks off Gay & Lesbian Pride Month on June 8th at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena. The concerts will feature five hours of nonstop music with other exciting special guests appearing on select dates throughout the tour including Rufus Wainwright, Rosie O'Donnell and Indigo Girls with additional guests to be announced.

The True Colors Tour was conceived by Cyndi Lauper stemming from her desire to give back to the community for the love and support they have given her throughout her career. Through a joint program with the Human Rights Campaign -- the nation's largest organization working for GLBT equality -- as well as PFLAG and The Matthew Shepard Foundation, the True Colors Tour will bring together Americans across the country to voice their solidarity against discrimination and for equality and raise public awareness about the issues facing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. One dollar of every ticket sold will benefit the work of the Human Rights Campaign.

True Colors is a celebration of the basic values and freedoms that should be shared by all Americans. Fans will experience these values through the music of both legendary icons and the newest and coolest acts this generation has to offer. "As an American I was raised to believe that all people have the right to live with the same dignity, opportunity and safety. This should include everyone no matter what gender or sexual orientation," said Lauper. "This tour was created to celebrate our differences by raising awareness for liberty, fairness and dignity for everyone -- not just some of us. Our fans can come out to celebrate a great cause while also hearing some great music."

Host for the musical events Margaret Cho says, "I am thrilled to be part of this tour because I am about as colorful and as queer as it gets. Who else is going to keep all those Queens in line?"

Human Rights Campaign seeks to improve the lives of GLBT Americans by advocating for equal rights and benefits in the workplace, ensuring families are treated equally under the law and increasing public support among all Americans through innovative advocacy, education and outreach programs. HRC works to secure equal rights for GLBT individuals and families at the federal and state levels by lobbying elected officials, mobilizing grassroots supporters, educating Americans, investing strategically to elect fair-minded officials and partnering with other GLBT organizations. HRC has close to 600,000 members -- all committed to making this vision of equality a reality. "Cyndi has always stood with us and selflessly used her talents to promote fairness for everyone. We are honored to be a part of the True Colors tour which will empower both gay and straight Americans to show solidarity against discrimination."

Tickets for select cities will go on sale beginning March 16th and will be available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/.

The True Colors Tour is presented by Logo and produced by True Colors Concerts, LLC in partnership with the Human Rights Campaign.

Logo, the new digital cable channel from MTV Networks for the gay and lesbian audience, is now seen in 26 million homes and has 100 advertising partners supporting the channel which features original shows, movies and news.

"Cyndi was one of America's first true music video stars; her history with MTV Networks goes deep. "I jumped on the HeadBlade bandwagon the first time I found out about the product almost six years ago, and have been using it ever since. Whether you're black, white, straight or gay, a shaved head is a shaved head, and it requires specialized maintenance."

"John Amaechi is the newest face of the brand because he embodies many of the qualities representative of a HeadBlader," said HeadBlade CEO Todd Greene. "He is a man comfortable in his own skin and he's not afraid to go against the grain. The HeadBlade audience is diverse; we endorse MMA fighters, bodybuilders, Harley Davison drag racers, and other professional athletes. John not only represents a few of our target demographics; he's also a worldwide diplomat for the brand and a role model to many people. John has been a HeadBlader for a long time, and it's an honor to have him officially on the HeadBlade team."

Amaechi, whose recent acknowledgement he spent his entire NBA career as a closeted gay man in his controversial book, Man in the Middle, currently on The New York Times Best Seller List, initially referred to his fascination with the HeadBlade in a 2002 article in ESPN The Magazine. In the article, Amaechi explained, "It's made for your head, not your face, which is good, because with all the wrinkles up there, you need more control."

The multi-year contract, signed for an undisclosed sum of money, is the first major corporate endorsement deal of Amaechi's career.

About John Amaechi

The New York Times Best-Selling author John Amaechi is the first National Basketball Association player to acknowledge he is gay. His book, Man in the Middle, launched in February 2007 from ESPN Books, has garnered worldwide attention, creating a dialogue previously non-existent. Amaechi, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, and New York Knicks, remains the only British athlete to have played in the league. Amaechi was honored as one of the NBA's most improved players in 2000 and was the only British member inducted into the United States Basketball Hall of Fame. Since his retirement from basketball, John has pursued a PhD in psychology and heads an executive coaching and training company, while speaking internationally on diversity, success planning and whole-life balance. Most importantly, John uses his experience with children, youth issues and interventions to further develop the unique experience that is manifested at his youth centers in England.

About HeadBlade, Inc.

HeadBlade, Inc. is the pioneer in head care. The Company has taken the head shaving niche and created a lifestyle brand for millions of people who shave their heads. The original HeadBlade was listed among the "Top Ten Designs in 2000" by Time Magazine and is now in the permanent collection at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The all new HeadBlade Sport comes standard with moving wheels and triple blade technology. Both Senators have refused to answer the question which followed comments made by Marine General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune in which he called American service personnel immoral:

"Most Democrats understand, and should understand, that morality isn't derived from sexual orientation or gender identity. Morality is how you treat your neighbor, support your community and sacrifice for your family and country. When I tuck my daughter into bed at night, those are the values I teach her. We expect Democratic candidates and elected officials to reaffirm those same values, to speak up when families or individuals are scapegoated or maligned for political gain, and to proactively argue the benefits of treating all Americans equally under the law without regard to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"Morality is also embodied in action. Our Democratic presidential candidates support employment non-discrimination legislation, the extension of health care benefits to our families, and oppose constitutional amendments that attack lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people for political gain. Those are moral actions and positions that each candidate should be proud to campaign on.

"National Stonewall Democrats looks forward to further working with our Democratic candidates so that, in the future, they can speak with moral clarity and continue to positively partner with our community."

-- Jo Wyrick, Executive Director, National Stonewall Democrats

In comments reported this week by the Chicago Tribune, General Peter Pace unfavorably compared homosexuality to adultery, saying he believed both were immoral. "I do not believe the United States is well served by a policy that says it is okay to be immoral in any way," Pace said. ""I believe homosexual acts between two individuals are immoral and that we should not condone immoral acts."

Senators Clinton and Obama were each asked, in response to the comments made by General Pace, if sexual orientation was an immoral trait. Each Senator, so far, has declined to answer the question.

Congressman Marty Meehan (D-MA) has recently introduced the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would revoke the current policy on gay personnel. The removal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Pursue" policy is supported by leading Democrats and is the official position of the Democratic Party as espoused in the 2004 platform of the Democratic National Convention.

National Stonewall Democrats is the only national organization of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Democrats, with more than 90 local chapters across the nation. Aarons Scholarship Award at Headlines & Headliners: NLGJA's 12th Annual New York Benefit, to be held at ABC Times Square Studios. The 2007 award recipient is Colin Dugdale, a third-year journalism student at Indiana University Bloomington.

An Indiana native, Dugdale is a columnist and reporter for the university's award-winning Indiana Daily Student. While at the paper, he has been awarded nine "Best Column" awards and was twice voted "Best Columnist" (Fall 2005 and 2006).

David L. Adams, Indiana University Professor, Director of the Office of Student Media and NLGJA member, says that Dugdale's columns "tackle a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues with great humor and understanding. I knew Roy Aarons personally; from the time he met with many of us and urged the student press to be more receptive to LGBT issues and coverage. He would have been proud to know Colin and see his work in our student media."

"There is something very empowering about writing," Dugdale says. "That's why I've chosen this profession. At the end of the day I can look at myself in the mirror and know that I've done something that's made a difference. That's journalism."

Named in memory of NLGJA's founder, the $5,000 award was established to support the education of an LGBT student who plans a career in journalism and is committed to furthering NLGJA's mission of fair and accurate coverage of the LGBT community. The fund is administered through a partnership between NLGJA and The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund (a component of The Philadelphia Foundation), which serves to advance philanthropy within the LGBT community. The award will be presented by CNN's "American Morning" anchor Soledad O'Brien. In 2005, CNN contributed a $100,000 gift to support the scholarship award.

O'Brien will be one of a number of special guests joining NLGJA members, friends and supporters at the ABC Times Square Studios. The event will be hosted by ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Brian Ross and will feature notables from the worlds of journalism, sports, and entertainment including: former NBA player and Human Rights Campaign Coming Out Project Spokesperson John Amaechi; former World No. 1 tennis player and Co-Founder of the Rainbow Visa Card, Martina Navratilova; Ted Allen and Kyan Douglas of Bravo's "Queer Eye;" Robert Lipsyte of The New York Times; Fox News Anchor Martha MacCallum; Meredith Vieira and Natalie Morales of NBC News' "Today Show;" Erin Moriarty and Russ Mitchell of CBS News; Tim Gunn and Kara Janx of Bravo's "Project Runway;" blogger Andy Towle of Towleroad.com; Anchor Jason Bellini from CBS News on LOGO; Carl Quintanilla of CNBC's "Squawk Box;" Barry Rice of Barry Rice Designs; screenwriter and playwright Douglas Carter Beane; and authors Tom Dolby, "The Trouble Boy," and Bob Smith, "Selfish & Perverse."

"For the second year in a row, we have been privileged to select the Aarons Scholarship Award winner from a pool of exceptional student journalists. Gates, was filed on behalf of the plaintiffs by Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) and the law firm of WilmerHale.

"When we began this journey in December 2004, we were determined to have our stories heard and to present the facts about 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Today's hearing was an important step forward in that journey," the plaintiffs said in a statement issued today. "This morning, we have come to the First Circuit with unmovable confidence in our nation's promise of 'liberty and justice for all.' We believe the freedoms we defended as United States military personnel are alive and well in our country. We know our nation can do better than this law."

The twelve plaintiffs in Cook v. Gates are seeking reinstatement in the armed forces. Their lawsuit asserts that "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" punishes lesbian, gay and bisexual service members for their sexual orientation and for their private, constitutionally protected conduct. As a result, the plaintiffs argue, it has denied and continues to deny them several constitutional rights, including the right to privacy, equal protection of the law, and freedom of speech. The challenge to "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the plaintiffs' appeal brief asserts, is "grounded in basic principles of identity, equality, and freedom."

"There is no doubt in our mind that this law violates many of the core principles set forth in our constitution," said SLDN executive director C. Dixon Osburn. "Every day, lesbian, gay and bisexual service members are prohibited from simply identifying themselves as who they are. They are denied the fundamental right to privacy that every American should enjoy and they are set aside by our armed forces with a second class of citizenship. The freedoms they fight so hard for abroad are denied to them right here at home."

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit all served honorably in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Together, they have served more than sixty-five years in the armed forces. Three have served in direct support of operations in the Middle East. Among them, they have earned more than five dozen awards, medals and commendations.

For more information on Cook v. The most significant research result indicates 91% support for legislation giving same-sex couples the guaranteed right to visit their partner in the hospital, should s/he become ill.

"This is an exceptional response to such an important issue facing many LGBT Ohioans," said Lynne Bowman, Executive Director of Equality Ohio Education Fund. "Everyone should have the guaranteed right to visit their sick or dying partner. Hospital visitation is an issue on which almost all Ohio voters can agree."

According to the research, more than two thirds of Ohio voters support legislation to protect people from discrimination in the workplace based on their sexual orientation. When polled, 68% of respondents said they would support a law making it illegal to fire or deny housing to an individual based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Current Ohio law falls short of protecting all Ohioans from discrimination by excluding sexual orientation and gender identity as fundamental human characteristics deserving of protection.

Not surprisingly, when Ohio voters were asked about their stance regarding same-sex marriage, only 34% of those who responded stated that they were in support of the legalization of marriage between two people of the same gender. This result closely mirrors the outcome of the 2004 November election where Ohioans voted to pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage.

"We are working for an inclusive Ohio where equality and diversity are valued and protected by law," Bowman said. "This is not about special rights. This is about every Ohioan deserving equal rights and protections. Most Ohio voters understand and support that."

About The Equality Ohio Education Fund

The Equality Ohio Education Fund is a not-for-profit, equal-rights education and advocacy organization that envisions an Ohio where everyone feels at home, living in families and communities where equality, diversity and inclusiveness are universally valued; and where government protects all people and responds to their needs, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
