Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I announce the close of OutSpokenNYC.

It’s a bittersweet feeling because in the recent successes of our founding contributors Tyler Williams, Jonathan Bender and myself we’ve decided that we each need to focus on the personal projects we have going on. We want OutSpoken to be the best site it can be and realize with our focus elsewhere the site wouldn’t be delivering at its full potential. It’s not a “Goodbye forever” as much as a “See ya later.”

In a year and a half we’ve overcome many challenges, grown immensely, created a ton of content that we are very proud of, and have had a blast while doing it. (I feel like I’m writing a eulogy for my first born.)

We are extremely grateful for everyone’s loyalty and continued support since OutSpokenNYC’s inception. Thank you for having fun with us on this journey. OutSpoken has been an outlet for us to write freely about topics for our friends (all of you) to enjoy. It’s been a wild and extremely fulfilling ride.

With that said, we are all extremely excited for what’s happening in our lives, and we aren’t going anywhere. We welcome you to follow us and our personal endeavors.

Keep in touch!

With warm regards and extreme amounts of love,

The new generation of Girl Power.

Over the past year Xelle has been breaking boundaries left and right. From being the first girl group to include a drag queen, to getting international recognition from their first single “Party Girl,” to standing up for youth with their single “Invincible” benefitting GLSEN, they’ve had quite the busy first year.

You may know Mimi Imfurst from her epic fiery exit from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 3 or might have seen her and XELLE perform around town, but I had an opportunity this week to sit with the lovely ladies from XELLE and get to know them a bit better. We chatted about the fairy-tale story of how the group got together, their recent successes and their plans to continue breaking boundaries in the future.

A few weeks ago I visited some friends in Pittsburgh and ended up spending a lot of time at a little strip club called Cricket. We got to know the girls pretty well as we judged them American-Idol-style. They should DEFINITELY have a reality show based around these girls. The good and the bad.

One thing that stood out to me, aside from the plethora of vagina in my face, was that the music could totally make or break the girl’s performance. It appears that the girls were choosing the two songs for their own dance sets, and some were just disappointing.

Afterwards, while visualizing my life as a stripper in an alternate universe, I decided to put together a little playlist of what my signature songs would be. Plus I needed some tunes to play in my apartment while I practice the new moves I learned at the always classy Cricket.

Enjoy!

We’ve all witnessed the endless amounts of hatred from religious groups attempting to make airwaves regarding those seedy gays and their brainwashing ways. With the media in our favor, a narrowed focus on hatred in the U.S. has infiltrated everything from the A.M. papers to documentaries on bullying to the numerous campaigns attempted to strengthen efforts to keep our youth safe; some efforts thriving over others, but that’s a matter of opinion. While browsing through my Twitter feed this morning, a friend brought to my attention a blog post containing a response email from a mother who had to learn through her own actions how her religious beliefs can coincide with her love for her son. The problem? A community filled with looming unacceptance and judgment.

After her 15 year old son brought home an article assignment from school, entitled “I’m Christian, Unless You’re Gay,” the outlandish threats of getting the teacher fired forced the teen to flee to a safer space to clear his head. Here’s the full response and story, followed by a link to the original article. Give it a read, share it with your loved ones and continue to be a voice to advocate acceptance. I’ve already emailed my mommer, what’s stopping you?

Hello Mr. Pearce,

I am the Christian mother of a 15 year old teenage boy and about a month ago he came home from school with a copy of your article “I’m Christian, unless you’re gay”. The teacher gave his class a homework assignment to read it and write a 500 word essay about “what it meant to them”.

He came home and showed me your article and asked me what I thought about it. I read just the title and became furious at his teacher and at you (even though I know you had nothing to do with her handing out the assignment). Anyway, I confiscated it from him and told him he wasn’t to do anything with it till I had a chance to read it first.

And then I got madder and madder as I read it as I felt like it was a direct attack against our beliefs and our Christian religion and that it was promoting homosexuality, a practice that around here is a huge “sin”.

I gave my son an earful about homosexuality and God and told him that he could tell his teacher that he would not be participating and if she had a problem, she could come talk to me and then I threw the article in the trash. My son didn’t say anything just walked into his room and shut the door.

Long story short, a couple hours later it was supper time and I still hadn’t seen him come out of his room. I didn’t expect it to be that big of a deal to him but I went and knocked and told him to come out, he didn’t answer so I opened his door and he wasn’t there, he had left the house and gone somewhere. Of course I got more mad and tried to call him but he sent it to voicemail. I sent him a text and told him he better get home and he was grounded.

This is the text he sent me in return: “I don’t care. I’m at my friends house writing that essay and I’m not coming home till you read it.”

I think you would have seen steam coming out of my ears if you saw me. I started preparing to go talk to the school the next day. I sent a few angry texts to my son that he didn’t answer. I got the article out of the trash so I could take it into the school and get this teacher fired. My anger got a little out of control and while I was sitting there fuming and planning what to do, I got another text from my son that said “Just emailed it. Love, Jacob.”

My son’s name is not Jacob, and it took me a minute to realize that he was talking about your friend Jacob in your article. And when I realized that I suddenly started shaking in fear and anger at what he might be telling me. I started out of control crying because I couldn’t handle having a gay son and what if that’s what he was trying to tell me? After a long time I finally got the courage to go look at my email and see what he had sent. And this is what he wrote:

I am gay and only my one friend knows so far. My mom doesn’t know yet. My dad doesn’t know yet. You didn’t know it when you gave us this homework. I am only 15 years old and I have never felt so alone. My mom and dad always are being angry about gay people and talking about how they are bad and going to hell and they also always talk about how all the gays should be shipped off to their own private island or something so that the rest of us could live God’s commandments in peace.

I have been so scared of them finding out that I’m gay because I know that they would hate me and would want me out of their life and at the same time I can’t keep this secret anymore because it is not something I asked for, never in a million years would I ask to be gay in a town like this where everybody would hate me. And anyways I can’t keep this secret anymore because I’m about to do something crazy like run away or hurt myself or something. I just want to be dead sometimes.

And then you gave us the assignment to write this essay for our homework and I read it like ten times I even skipped lunch and just kept reading it in the bathroom and by the time I went home I decided that maybe I am only 15 years old but maybe this town will change if I can be honest about who I am and maybe my family will change if I can be honest about who I am with them too. I don’t see why I don’t deserve love just like everyone else. I see some crazy stuff that so many people do and people still love them but for some reason everybody around here thinks its ok to hate gays and stuff. And I don’t know really I think I just realize that I don’t want to be Jacob in ten years and still live my life in secret and scared of being hated.

So I go home and I tell my mom to read this handout you gave us and she got so mad at me and started going crazy about how evil gays are and how all of this was just the devil spreading his work and everything else she said. But this time I just got mad myself and I got so mad because I suddenly realize that this is the woman that my whole life made me go to church where they talk about love just like the writer said but she and every other person I pretty much know just hate so many people especially gay people. So I got madder and madder and madder and then I snuck out and came to my friends house to write this essay because its time to stop letting people’s hate stop me from being happy. I mean should I really have to hate my life and want to die because other people are so hating?

And I don’t know what will happen but I am done playing like I’m something I’m not and if my parents don’t love me anymore because of this then I realize that’s not my problem and it will hurt but not as much as the way I hurt right now. I feel like if my mom and dad would just think about things they’d realize that what they always say and how they always hate gays is not what Jesus would do and maybe there is a chance that they will some day love me like Jesus would. I am their kid afterall.

Tonight I am going to send this to my mom and see what she says I guess. I don’t know what will happen but I know that I deserve to be loved just like everybody else does I just hope she thinks so too.

Obviously you can imagine the emotions and thoughts that were going through my head when I read that…

I started crying and couldn’t stop for the longest time. I don’t know why I was crying exactly, just so many emotions came over me. I didn’t know what to do or how to respond. I finally stopped and went and read your article once more only this time I tried to read it through my son’s eyes and the whole thing was so different than it was a couple hours before. By the time I finished I felt as big as an ant and I realized just how much hatred I have in my heart toward others.

You see, Mr. Pearce, you are right. It’s not about what other people do. It’s about whether or not we are loving them. Nothing else matters at all. And it took all of this for that to finally sink in.

I texted my son back that I loved him and left it at that. He came home that night and didn’t try to talk to me about it, I just told him I loved him at least ten times that night and made sure not to talk about anything else. My love for him was the only thing I wanted him to feel and I knew he’d talk to me about it when he was ready.

That was a month ago and in the last month my son and I (his dad lives three states away and still doesn’t know) have grown much closer than we ever were before. We have both stood up against hate several times when we hear it coming from the people around us. You see, where we live people really do have problems “being Christian unless…” But no longer in this home.

I’ve shared your article now with countless people. I have made my sisters read it. I talked about its message to my parents. I sent it to my friends and neighbors. And I’ve had some people get really upset by it, but a change is starting to happen around here and it’s because one teenage boy finally had the courage to stand against what he felt was wrong. He believed he could make a change. And I’ll tell you right now, it makes me happy to see him so happy. I never knew how unhappy he was until I could finally see how happy he could be.

So thank you. I know this is long, but I thought you’d like to know what your article has done in this little town we live in. And it’s just the beginning.

Sincerely yours, one proud mom.

I would love to hear everyone’s thought on this, their struggles, their experiences, their family stories. Storytelling, in my opinion, is always a far better start in educating, as open dialogue isn’t always offered in every community.

I turned 25 last weekend. I got my fake ID at 19 and haven’t slowed down since. In fact I can’t remember the last time I even went a week without a drink.

So, I decided I want to take a break and see if I can go the full month of April without a single drink. Crazy right? Now, I’m not as crazy as I was in college, but I like to throw down and get a little crazy on the weekends and I enjoy a beer or two with dinner (or lunch ). I’m not dependent on alcohol, but I do find myself having a hard time saying “no” to a drink when I’m out at a bar or dinner or an event. ESPECIALLY IF IT’S AN OPEN BAR. Who am I to turn down free booze? There are sober children in Africa.

Seriously though, this city runs on alcohol as fuel. It’s nearly impossible to escape it, especially when you have to network and socialize to move ahead in life. I’m not planning to be sober forever, but I realized I need to prove to myself that I have the power to turn down a drink whenever I want.

I have so much respect for my friends that live a sober life in New York City. It isn’t easy!

I had so many questions:

How do you turn down a free drink?

How do you make out with a stranger when you can’t have your “liquid courage?”

How do you deal with drunk friends when you’re sober?

So, I sat down with Joe Hubrich a few nights ago to ask for some tips.

The Imperial Court of New York’s 26th Annual Night of A Thousand Gowns hit the Marriott Marquee this past Saturday and brought a whirlwind of fun and excitement to anyone attending.

By far my favorite LGBTQ fundraising event of the year. It may not be the one with the most celebrities attending or the one with the most expensive gift bags when you leave, but it doesn’t have to be. It has something else. Something very special that you don’t find at other large gala events. Aside from the obvious glitter and glam, the atmosphere is always light, friendly and fun. They claim to “put the ‘fun’ back in ‘fundraising’” and I couldn’t agree more. It’s not just another hoity-toity event that rich men use to metaphorically jerk each other off with check books. Donations and auction bidding is greatly appreciated but it’s by no means a show of who’s wallet is bigger. It’s truly about helping a few good causes while having fun and not taking yourself too seriously as your do it.

As soon as I arrived to the lobby of the Marriott Marquee in my teal sequined blazer a group of Midwestern tourists approached to ask about the event. To my surprise the chaperon of 30 or more choir kids replied with a, “Wow! That sounds great, we don’t get to see any drag queens at home,” and then stayed to watch and cheer on the next few queens to arrive.

Walking into the cocktail hour is an explosion of color, glitter and flashes of cameras in every direction. A platform to show off your look and appreciate the array of creativity surrounding you at every turn. Cocktails and friendly faces asking to take photos with the boldest of outfits.

Then the show begins.

You’re not expected to follow any complete storyline happening on stage, but take in as much of this eyegasm as possible. The night’s theme of “Wonderland” was taken to the extremes of camp with a royal flare. The costumes by reigning Emperor and Empress Pepperica Swirl and Vanity Society alone were enough to call home about. The amount of creativity behind their brains is incredible. With probably more than seven costume changes each, this duo could have done a full show on their own (pictured in photo set above). The rest of the show’s performances had highs and lulls, highlights including Lisa Lampinelli’s stand up (view a clip here), a performance from the cast of Chicago, and the opening/closing performances by the court. You’re never tied to your seat though. You’re always welcome, and almost encouraged, to roam around, bid on some auction items, grab a drink, or check out the photo studio set up in the lobby. There were also a few breaks from performance to get up on stage yourself and dance it out to the DJ. The new Emperor and Empress, Ritz Kracker and Witti Repartee, we’re crowned towards the end of the evening to cheers and hollers from the audience.

After a long evening (6pm – 1am) my puppies, which were rocking four inch heels for seven hours, we’re exhausted and ready to retire to my bed. Laying in bed I couldn’t remove the glitz, glamour and colorful extravaganza from my mind and my dreams became a wonderland of their own.

Until next year.

Jenna Talackova, who was one of the original 65 finalists chosen to compete for Miss Universe Canada, was disqualified earlier this week because she was born male.

Talackova has identified as a female since age four and began transitioning with hormone treatment at age fourteen. She is now a 23 year old pageant queen, and a total knockout. Though the requirements listed on the Miss Universe website simply state that contestants “Must be female,” “Must not be married” and “Must not be pregnant,” Denis Davila, national director of Miss Universe Canada, says that the rules state that every contestant must be a “naturally born female.”

In my opinion there is nothing more “natural” than a four year old being aware of their true gender.

I tried reaching out to Jenna for a quick interview, but her official statement at this point is “Jenna is overwhelmed, and deeply moved, by the support she has received from around the globe, but especially from fellow Canadians that have said how proud they would be if she represented Canada in the Miss Universe pageant.” She may be seeking legal action on the matter.

She has taken to twitter though, stating;

Disqualified for being born? Really? I don’t think so..

— jenna talackova (@JennaTalackova) March 22, 2012

And a reply which stated “Thank you, I’m not going to just let them disqualify me over discrimination, see me soon.”

Online support for Talackova is definitely on the rise. A petition has been started on Change.org, demanding that competition owner Donald Trump make a move to change the rules and allow Jenna to compete. It has already reached 43,000+ signatures out of its goal of 50,000.

Do you think Jenna Talackova should be allowed to compete?

*SPOILERS BELOW*

If any of you follow my Twitter, you already know that I’ve been a huge fan of The Hunger Games books since last summer. Some say obsessive. I say enthusiastic.

When the movie was first announced it seemed like it would be a lifetime away. But tine flew as marketing strategies for the film came and went. Of course Dan Chiz and I went to the midnight showing in our custom made Hunger Games attire to be among the first folks to see it. The theaters were packed with fans of the trilogy dying to see their favorite story unfold on screen.

I’m going to attempt to write an unbiased review, but in reality this is the review of a super fan. I’ll also attempt to be an adult and understand that it would be impossible to fit every detail into the film adaptation.

As a whole it is like reading The Hunger Games on speed. The story zooms by on the screen and if you blink you might miss seeing Gale (My true love.) entirely.

But before we get to Gale, let’s start with our heroine, Katniss. A huge challenge is that a majority of the book is Katniss explaining her feelings and reminiscing about the past. While Jennifer Lawrence did a phenomenal job expressing her thoughts via facial cues you can’t help but miss Katniss’ inner sassi-tude from time to time. It’s hard to say that I wish they had spent more time explaining the relationship and history between Katniss and Gale because it would cut even more from the meat and potatoes of the actual games. The character of Katniss itself feels a bit different than when reading the books. Though she showed her strength and courage when nominating herself in place of Prim, I feel she was a bit soft and that threatening overall.

Josh Hutchinson as Peeta = I was worried about this casting because of his size, but he was on point and completely changed my mind.

Elizabeth Banks as Effie = Incredible.

Donald Sutherland as President Snow = This was really the only one that made me go, “No.” He should be perfectly groomed. Styled to perfection. He looked like he just left the games himself.

Amandla Stenberg as Rue = Adorable. Great casting choice.

Stanley Tucci as Caesar = I pictured him slightly different, but he was perfection.

Gale, Haymitch, Prim, Cinna and Cato were all done well too. Nothing majorly noteworthy as good or bad. Might have more opportunity to explore these characters in Catching Fire.

Most of my disappointment in the film lies in the scenes where the tributes are prepping for the games. It looks just… low budget. ( And probably was. ) The people of the capitol make it look like we are in a multi-colored emerald city. CHEAP. I wanted more facial alterations and glittery tattoos. Make them look a bit freaky and funky. ( Really want Amanda Lepore or Jocelyn Wildenstein to play Tirgis in Mockingjay ) The costume where Peeta and Katniss were on fire looked WEAK. I’m sorry, but this is the highlight of the book. Find a little more money in the budget to make this look like something of worth.

Now to the games themselves. I loved how they utilized Caesar as the announcer to explain certain pieces of the story. This and the use of notes on the parachuting gifts were a very resourceful way to explain bits you might have otherwise missed. The action scenes were probably some of my favorite parts to watch. They really brought these scenes to life through the editing. They felt as sporadic and intense as they do while reading the book. I definitely had a tear or two coming down my face when Rue died, though I think it’s only really because I read the book and understood the connection between the girls. You didn’t exactly feel the connection there from the few short clips they showed. The scene to follow where District 11 begins to revolt was a great insight you don’t exactly get from the book’s description. Towards the end I found it hard to keep track of how many tributes were left in the game. Then, out of the blue, Peeta counts the remaining tributes (In an effort to help this very problem.) and refers to “Fox Face” as if everyone has been calling her that all along. In the book Katniss’ nickname for the ginger tribute is said a billion times by now, but here it seemed awkward that we were just supposed to have understood who they were talking about. It seems minor, but it bothered me.

Much to my point that the film is made for fans of the book. Not as much for newcomers.

It provides a great insight into some visuals and is very stimulating, but if you’re not already familiar, I could see it being a bit confusing.

Overall, as a super fan, I really enjoyed the film adaptation and felt that it definitely added to my overall Hunger Games experience in life. Of course I wish they had split it into two films and provided more accurate portrayal of the book I loved reading, but it more than serves its purpose.

I can’t wait for a large budget for Catching Fire. (Release Date Announced as Nov 22nd, 2013) Now THAT could be something special.

Who do you think would be cast at Finnick?

It’s official: Katy Perry has jumped off the deep end. Not for serious but she does in fact pull a “G.I. Jane” starred Britney Spears during her “Blackout” era. Taping down her whipped cream cannons, chopping off her locks and enlisting in the Marines is the obvious solution for a cheating boyfriend, right? Katy Perry seems to think so in the video for “Part Of Me,” the latest of her sure-fire chart topper wins. California lustin’ this ain’t, with lyrics like, “Throw your sticks and your stones / Throw your bombs and your blows / But you’re not gonna break my soul.” Katy Perry is giving you the less bootylicious version of “Independent Women,” but with the same amount of self-empowerment. Breaking up has never sounded this fun! Ok, lie: there’s always Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” to fall back on.

Although it’s been speculated that this song is the anthem dedicated towards her ex-husband, a recently arrested Russell Brand, Perry premiered the song at the Grammy Awards after it’s demo leaked well over a year ago. “Some people that I work with were like, ‘You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago,’” she recently told MTV News. Her response? “I’m like, ‘I’m not a d***, I’m going to tell the truth.’” A recent collaboration with her maid of honor and best friend, Rihanna, is also in the works.

Part of Me is the quintessential breakup pop song that begs for long pensive runs filled with extra aggression and silent single-tears. It’s refreshing new color on Perry, normally covered in confectionary-coating, the pop tartlet is giving us a dark layered cake. If Katy Perry continues with her message of “I’m better without you and I’ve learned through your mistakes,” I’m definitely on board for the next album. The gays are always sucker for good breakup anthems, myself included. The only way it could be improved is if Kelly Clarkson had sung it herself.

Will “Part of Me” guarantee a sequel to Rihanna’s “Battleship?” I’m hoping not but I sure hope she keeps covering inappropriate song choices to keep my bushbaby eyes in check.

Check out the video and you be the judge of the Billboard chart topper‘s performance. Definitely her catchiest hit to date, in my honest opinion.

It’s way too early to be looking for swimwear, right? I didn’t think so either. As I sit here looking down at my dirty laundry covered washboard abs (blasted carbs), few words come to mind that don’t revolve around the summer. With vibrant neons, muted pastels and the resurgence of camouflage in the spring/summer collections, it’s obvious that you don’t want to be caught dead wearing a personality-free bathing suit. Forget those old board shorts from years prior, regardless of how well it may have fit you that one summer on Fire Island. It’s time to start cracking down on your grooming regimen, maximizing results to maximize your steamy summer beach trips and giving your appearance a necessary lift. Whether you’re taking the Jitney, on your honeymoon or day drinking on the pier, here are some solid options that’ll keep eyes on all of the right parts.

Fortune Favors the Bold: Modern yet bold (not to mention flattering!), these trunks will turn heads and match that fruity tropical drink you feel so bad indulging in. Look sleek and give yourself a break, as long as you’re still fitting in your suit…

Paul Smith Multi-striped Swim Trunks ($165)

Low-Maintenance on a High-Maintenance Budget: Nothing says carefree cool quite like a camouflage print. With softer shades of classic navy moving to the front of the line this season, these swim shorts from Robinson les Bains are begging for you to get your poolside tan on. Sitting right at the hip, these were made a bit snug so it’s smarter to go a size up to achieve the perfect fit. Sure, you’ll be breaking the bank a bit but when has aquatic luxe looked this easygoing? I rest my case.

Robinson les Bains - Oxford Court Camouflage Print Swim Shorts ($270)

The Honeymooner: New suitor, new suit. Consider these trunks from Rando (available at Barneys) and embrace the an earthy green tone, while your honey admires how subtly sharp you are.

RODA – Solid Weave Swim Trunk ($195)

Those Who Can’t Let Go: …of the board-short.
