August 2008 ending up in rural Nevada about 50 miles from Las Vegas. Married right about 40 years ago (2nd try), retired back in 2000. We travel as much as we can driving here in the US, taking cruises and the occasional international trip.

Life in the fast lane!

I've got no idea what's going on but my left hip is just hurting like hell. I haven't fallen; haven't bumped into anything; haven't overdone anything; it just hurts like crazy. This getting old sucks! Otherwise things are just fine. We are hitting somewhere in the 90 F (32 C) area during the day and in the 50's (10 C) at night.

We had a guy come in and take out our weeds back in Feburary and, to our surprise, he charged us $700 for something like half a day's work. We've got more weeds now so called him up. He came around and this time we asked what he would charge before he started the job. He's from somewhere south of the border so he called his wife and had her talk with my wife on the phone. They came up with $800! Well, needless to say, we just sent him on his way. We won't be bothering him again!

Every year we donate to various charities. Generally it's a couple hundred of dollars except for our local VFW food bank that gets something like that in food every month or so. I'm good with donating to the charities but, damn, they are really demanding once they have your name! We get 2 or 3 requests a day for more money! We probably get one bill a week for electricity or a magazine or something; then we get 8 or 10 requests for donations. That's bad enough but then we get packages of birthday cards or calendars or who knows what. And the really stupid thing is that we don't donate to any of those charities! You'd think that they would figure it out after a year or so but, no, they just keep on asking for money and sending us crap.

Ok, enough bitching moaning and complaining. I hope you are having a great week. Keeping washing those hands and staying away from the sick folks. Take care.

Wow! The middle of March!

Well, it's been a while but then again I'm a dull old fart so maybe that's a good thing. We had a quiet start to the year then in the middle of February we got going. Well, things started happening anyway.

The first thing was my wife falling and hurting herself on February 16. She's not fat but I'm not the strong young guy I used to be so we called the EMTs to help her up. Then it was my turn on the 17th; I fell by tripping on a dog toy and again we needed the EMTs. We had a cruise planned and they wouldn't let my wife bring her wheelchair with out a note from her doctor; but they didn't mention that until the Saturday before the cruise was to leave. We still wanted to go so we decided to go with the walker. She's got one of those with a seat so you can sit and rest if you need it. So on Saturday night I was shutting off the power to our water well in the dark and I fell again! Yep, EMTs again. But I felt ok so we headed off to Las Vegas; we had Saturday night, Sunday night and Monday night in a hotel. It did give us some time to relax a bit and start the recovery process.

Tuesday morning, February 24th, we headed for the airport. First we flew to Phoenix then changed planes and off to Ft. Lauderdale, FL where we were to find our ship.

We were on another Viking cruise; this time from Ft. Lauderdale to Barcelona, Spain. There were two island stops along the way but we'd been to both so didn't feel the need to get off the ship. Mostly we just relaxed in our room in between going to the various dining areas. It would have been a really relaxing trip but we ran into a lot of 20 mph breezes and that made the ship move a lot and that made walking dangerous! It turns out that our cabin was quite far forward in the ship and most of the dining places are in the aft part so it was a good walk to go eat. It turns out that my wife would sit in her walker and I would push it most of the way then she would get up to take the elevator to the restaurant and within it. And I got to push her back to our room.

The cruise lasted from February 24 until March 9th and we only got off the ship when we landed in Barcelona. Then we got in for more flying. First a short flight to London (not quite 2 hours) then a 10 hour flight from London to Las Vegas! I was walking fairly well by the time we made it to Vegas but my wife still needed that walker. We had another night at the hotel in Vegas then got home about 10:00 on the 10th and went to get the dog from the kennel shortly thereafter. So that's the big news from us so far.

Next week we start seeing doctors again. I have a 'regular' visit with mine; my wife gets to visit with her two Las Vegas surgeons to find out what they can do to help her. We'll see how that goes. So far she's had two major surgeries on her ankle and one smaller one on her toes. All we can do at this point is hope for a miracle.

So I hope you have all had at least a safer time this year than we have. So keep washing those hands, don't fall and stay away from sick people!

OMG - 2026!

We had a guy come and clean up some weeds in our yard and we wrote him a check. The amount was scary enough but writing 1/6/26 for the date was even worse! Wow! That thing about time flying is real!

Of course the news is pretty scary these days too. Invading another country? Talking about taking an area from another NATO country? Having American citizen shot and killed by ICE? What the hell is the world coming to? And, of course, there is the President's health that is clearly not great. Every day brings some new weirdness in the news.

On the good side, this was our sunset last night.

We did get some rain last night but today it is 50ish and clear. Of course the wind is between 15 and 25 mph so that keeps us filling the bird feeders. We have a RING video camera in our front yard and the alert just went off. It was a big dead bush being blowing across the yard! Talk about fun times! Sometimes a hawk or other pretty large bird will fly by and set it off. The snow level on the mountains has come way down so that will get our water level up a bit. Out here in Nevada that's a wonderful thing! It's important too because there are lots of new houses being built. My wife and I are blaming the cost of living in California for all the people moving here but who knows. They might just be gamblers who like the casinos and we've got 7 or 8 of those; plus every grocery, gas station or whatever has 8 or 10 machines you can dump your money into. I don't think any comes back out to you. It just amazes me to see people at them; I'm just not that kind of gambler. Now buying Nvidia or AT&T or Pepsi - yeah, I do gamble on them. I've had some stinkers but some pretty good results too. It's just a fun part of life.

My wife is doing ok. She broke her ankle over 2 years ago and has had two surgeries to get it repaired. She's got a cane, a walker and a wheelchair. Which one she uses depends on how her foot is doing. She is hitting the gym twice a week for a workout with one of the PT guys. He's trying to help her build up her strength but she's got a way to go. Having the surgeon tell you to stay off your foot for 2 months means those muscles don't get any exercise and they just fade away. It's also known as life in the 75 lane!

Gotta go. I hope everyone is having a great start to the new year and that 2026 will actually turn out to be great. Take care and keep washing those hands!

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone is having a lovely Christmas. We are having a very quiet day. Doing nothing fancy, eating nothing fancy, not even dressing up! Well, that's old age and no relatives around. The weather forecast was for a flood warning; it's bright and sunny with a few clouds over the mountains: works for me! Yes, we do live in a flood zone. The houses across the street aren't in the flood zone so you can guess what kind of idiot came up with the flood zone idea.

We've been having our usual fun: mostly visiting Physical Therapy folks. They are all nice people and try to help my wife but there really isn't much that can be done. They want her to move and it hurts. Needless to say walking around or swinging your leg around when it hurts is hard to do. And not something you are likely to do. Otherwise we are doing just fine.

Needless to say the President is constantly aggravating me. I mean, destroying parts of the White House, sending military people (ICE) to act as police in our cities, renaming buildings in his own honor; the list goes on and on. The people in his cabinet are just as stupid! They are all kissing his ass. And I still see idiots wandering around with Trump hats! Trump signs on their lawns! How completely stupid are these people? Oh, and just to make matters worse, my step-son is one of them! Trump is a convicted felon, a molester of young women, a draft dodger and what else? Wow, our leader! Our President! Is that the way we want our country to go?

Sorry. I just can't ignore the direction in which we are going.

Have a good one. Try not to think about those idiots. Take care!

Did I mention rain?

We decided to take a little drive this afternoon; nothing to say! We haven't even had a special sunset lately and no way am I getting up early enough for sunrise!

We are surrounded by Republicans around here but at least there was a "No Kings" demonstration here along with the rest of the country. I simply cannot imagine how these Republicans think Mr. Trump is doing anything for them. Things are getting more expensive by the minute and governmental help is disappearing just as fast. I'm waiting on ICE to come into town and drag off 10-15% of the population sending them back to Mexico or pretty much any South American country. Most of our medical professionals are from overseas as well (mostly Asian countries) but I've got to think that even Trump isn't stupid enough to send them back to their country of origin.

The thing that bothers me most about Mr. Trump is his mental state. He is clearly not all there! Every speech has statements that not only are weird but they have nothing to do with what he's talking about. Getting the Republican's to see he has to go to the sidelines is going to be difficult unless he does something completely crazy. And then I'm worried about his Vice President and Cabinet officials. They seem even crazier than he is so without him who knows what they will be trying to do. My guess is that we'll be finding out before too long.

Meanwhile, our personal days are full of fun. My wife has Physical Therapy twice a week and one or the other of us needs to have blood drawn or an MRI or some scan done every couple of weeks. Otherwise it's just living life. Of course my wife can't do much of anything so I'm doing the shopping; cooking; laundry; cleaning; feeding the dog and the wild birds; pretty much everything and that's a lot for an old fart like me! She is getting better with using a walker and the PT people have her using some specialized kind of cane but she does still need plenty of rides in the wheelchair. I did have my 77th birthday last month so now I'm on my way to 78. I'm really happy that I can do all that stuff and help her get around as well. The fact that I see some movie star or someone dying when they are 5 or 10 years younger than I am does make me feel kind of weird. Of course who knows what kind of life they were living! Maybe they were living in the fast lane and God knows I'm pretty much in the slow lane!

I guess that's it for tonight. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Keep keeping clean and stay away from the idiots!

Another lovely sunset!

It's not tough to be out with the dog after his dinner when you get to look at this!

<div class="separator" No Kings!

Today there were supposed to be 'No Kings' demonstrations all over the country. We weren't expecting much since there are so many Trump fans living here but we were wrong! The center of our town is where 2 highways meet and there were people on all four sides of the meeting. I was guessing that there were at least 100 people and almost everyone who went past was honking their horn and waving in support! It was great! We had thought about going out and joining them but my wife's ankle was really barking so we just drove past the demonstrators two or three times honking and waving. Damn, it would be lovely if President Dummy and his crowd noticed that there are plenty of people who disagree with his desire to own the country! Our local sheriff was out there and a deputy or two but everyone was being good so they just stood around and watched the fun.

Then we went to CVS and got Covid shots. We are still hoping to take a cruise in February and getting ill on the cruise isn't that much fun. Yeah, we've tried that and the medics are very nice and competent but I'd still rather not have to deal with them.

Anyway, that was our day. The casino across the street has another flag about the same size but I couldn't get them both in one photo.

We've also had some weird weather.

<div class="separator" By tomorrow we should be in the low 80's (28C). Who knows what's going to happen next!

We do donate to the VFW Food Bank about once a month. A store was having a case sale so I got a couple of cases for the vets. It was something over $300 but, well, why not?

I know I've mentioned it before but my dad (and me, of course) and all the men in my wife's family served in the military. We both want to help those folks who served our country and need help.

My wife's ankle is still giving her trouble. She had it fused almost 3 months ago and it is still very painful. She had a women coming around giving her PT advice and now she is going to a local PT office but walking is pretty much out of the question. We did go out to lunch the other day and she used her walker but around the house or if we are going someplace with lots of walking; it's a wheelchair day. She certainly hasn't been in a grocery store since the surgery! Oh, and I'm doing most of the cooking so you can guess it's been pretty second rate!

So that's what's going on around here. The place is about 90% Republican so you still see some Trump signs but not nearly as many as six months ago! I'm pretty sure that within a year we'll be almost free of those signs. Not free of the President nor the idiots he has in the cabinet but people will be noticing the decline in their lives; freedom; savings and I don't know what else. I am a little worried that we might have a President J. D. Vance but we'll have to cross that bridge when we get there. Talk a life in the crap lane!

Have a good one and try to get all the vaccines you need and keep washing those hands!

Did I say slow?

Well, this week has been different. My wife had two doctor's appointments, one Tuesday and one Thursday, both in Vegas! That's a quick 250 miles more on the car. What the heck; it's just passed 78,000 miles and it's a 2016 model. Well, at least we got to eat 2 lunches at BJ's Restaurant. They have nice food, good beer and a desert they call the pizookie. It is a small, freshly baked cookie-sized cake with a scoop of ice cream on top. I'm sorry to report that I'm addicted to them. I guess I should be glad we don't have a BJ's here in town.

The good news from all that is that my wife is ok'd to walk using the walker. It's not like she's going to be running around the block any time soon but walking is a good thing! Check out the hardware in her ankle.

<div class="separator" We'll start that next week. Fun and games!

We got home and spent a quiet night; our dog was in a kennel. I went and got him this a.m. He's not too happy from being there but what can you do? We fed him tonight and I went out with him in the back yard. We had a nice but not spectacular sunset.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; They have a good sized area built for horses and now we have 4 new neighbors! They are quiet but we'll see how they are when their humans come to annoy them.

Have a good one & try not to get arrested for saying bad things about Trump! Take care.

Yet more life in the SLOW lane!

Yep, things are moving along but pretty much at a snail's pace. My wife is still in her wheelchair; hopefully she'll get out of it in a couple weeks but who knows. In the mean time she is trying out the walker for 20-30 feet at a time. Honestly, for her that's pretty good. I'm just happy that I can help her! I mean otherwise we'd be in some kind of care home.

In other exciting news we have had the usual 6-8 doctor visits each month (not counting the physical therapist who is checking on my wife). It's a good excuse for driving into Vegas so I can visit the Total Wine store. Otherwise we just wander around our 'little' town. I checked it on Google Maps and it worked out to be something like 11 miles east to west and 19 miles north to south! As you might suspect, one of the most common places for us to go these days in the Intermountain Healthcare building. They have a pretty large parking area on two sides of the building. As I was leaving the other day I had to take a couple of photos.

Yep, two wild horses! There are a fair number around here but I've never seen them by the doctor's office. Usually they prefer a little park over by the county office where there is lots of nice green grass and shade trees. They even get into our local paper: https://pvtimes.com/news/no-touching-or-feeding-the-horses-152526/. There was at least one more horse in the area but it was hiding behind a cafe and I couldn't get a photo of it. We have wild burros around as well but they are more likely to be hiding out in the desert areas. BTW, those mountains in the background are in California.

Anyway, that's all the news from around here. Exciting stuff, huh. Have a good one and try to keep out of trouble!

Just creeping along

Ok, it's been way too long but we are just having too much fun visiting doctors and other shit. It is also true that there isn't much going on around here. There are some houses being built; that is VERY different from a few years ago but, still, it's not really affecting us. One of these days I'm sure it will and we'll get new neighbors. The weather is being weird. One day it is 50F and the next it is 85F and the next 105F. One day it is quiet and the next we have 20 mph wind. Again, what do I do? I drive the car to the store and buy some stuff for dinner then drive home.

Out in the world we've got Mr. Trump, AKA the Idiot in Chief, who just keeps doing stupid things. I have to admit that he isn't as stupid as the people he's appointed to be in his cabinet but, well, that would be a stretch. One of the really minor things Mr. Trump did just recently was to pardon a local politician who was appointed a judge and then found guilty of fraud. She was in Las Vegas and started a support group to build a statue of a local policeman who was killed in the line of duty. Then she used the money people donated to pay her rent, pay for her daughter's wedding and some plastic surgery. She was found guilty of a felony of conspiracy and wire fraud. So our felon of a president chose to remove the felony from this sorry ass judge. Actually, on a scale of 1 to 10, it's way down there but it's still just so wrong!

OMG! Here it is the 10th of August and I'm finding a post I started almost two weeks ago! Well, to be honest there isn't much going on around here. My wife's ankle is still causing her pain and she's still in the wheelchair. Helping her around is my new exercise routine. She has an appointment with her surgeon next week but I'm thinking she will have to be pretty careful for quite a while yet. I'm going to the grocery store a couple of times a week and going to our favorite restaurants for take-out a couple more but that's about it. A couple days of the week I don't even get to leave the house. And an exercise routine, forget about it!

There are plenty of fires out here in the West. They are pretty unlikely in this part of Nevada but it sure isn't impossible. There are fire bans all over. What they can't ban is the smoke from the fires! Most of the fires are in California but there are some fairly large ones on government land that used to be part of the Nuclear Test Site. We have mountains to the east and west of us so the smoke tends to come down the valley areas. Bottom line is that we can barely see mountains that are only 6 or 8 miles away. Happily neither my wife or myself is bothered by the smoke but some folks do have problems with it.

So that's the story from here in Pahrump. Oh, one funny story about the president. We were driving out of a parking lot and a speed limit sign was blocking part of a sign naming the business in the building. All I could see of the 2nd one was 'RUMP' and of course I was shocked that someone had opened an office for the president. Turns out it was really something like 'JOHN'S PHARMACY PAHRUMP' and I could only see the last little part of it. Whew! That was a relief! Take care. Keep washing those hands and stay away from the sickies.

Happy Independence Day!!

And a nice windy day it is too! (Well, yesterday, I'm having too much fun to write a whole post in one day!)

In the good news department my wife had her surgery on the 2nd and seems to be doing fine even if she is in some pain. She broke her ankle just a bit over 2 years ago and had it operated on then. Unfortunately that surgery didn't work and now she is having it done over again. She came out and basically feels ok but she is going to be in a wheelchair for at LEAST 6 weeks! So Don is getting his exercise doing stuff around the house including pushing that chair. With any luck at all I won't poison us both with my cooking. Lots of fun but if it works, that will be great.

The surgery day was kind of nasty I must say. We live in the boonies so we went to Vegas on the 1st and spent the night in a hotel. We were told she had to shower that morning, not the previous evening, so we were up at 04:00 am to shower and get to the hospital by 05:30 to do paperwork. Yeah, special! Of course we then waited until the surgeon showed up about 07:45. She got to go in to her hospital bed and I got to sit in the waiting room. They have a special room for people waiting for people getting 1 day surgeries but I must say I was there more than most of the other family members. It was 11:15 by the time the surgeon came out and told me the surgery was successful and she was in recovery. It was shortly after 1 pm when I got to see her and by 1:20 we were loading into the car to come home. There were 2 nurses helping me get her situated in the car so you can guess that getting her out when we made it here was LOTS of fun! But we managed it (by 3:20 pm) and she's been holding down the recliner, her bed or the wheelchair ever since. She's got quite a bit of pain and tons of pills but who knows what is going to happen. I'm sure I'll be talking about it here.

We live in a weird world. We live in Nye County. In our county it is legal to possess fireworks and there are 3 large sellers of fireworks and a couple smaller ones. However, it is illegal to use the big fireworks in Nye County except in a designated area and for a few days around the 4th (https://pvtimes.com/news/officials-urging-safety-this-4th-of-july-144905/). In Clark County, where Las Vegas is, it is not legal to possess fireworks. So every year around Independence Day there are large signs put up saying 'Do not take fireworks into Clark County'. And others saying 'Do not buy illegal fireworks'. Of course people ignore all that. Just this week some guy from Las Vegas came into one of our large stores and bought $500 worth of 'safe and sane' fireworks. The problem is that Clark County does it's own testing and that stuff hadn't been tested so the the stuff was illegal. He was stopped as soon as he entered Clark County, the stuff taken away and he's gotten a fine. How did they know he was carrying fireworks? There was a cop in the store observing him! What a deal.

So now for the bad news which is, of course, that the Big Bill got passed and that's going to be nasty for lots and lots of people in this country. I have no idea what something like my wife's surgery will be costing when the bill goes into effect. But the real people I feel sorry about are in two categories: very poor and immigrants. I heard that children born here of immigrant parents may not be legal citizens. Well, I don't have any problem making a choice like that for children being born today or tomorrow but to force that on some kid who is 15 or 18 or even 30??? From what I'm reading the kid loses his/her citizenship automatically if the parents were illegals. Really? That's just wrong.

And, of course, there are the people depending on Food Stamps for dinner. And now they are in limbo. The federal law is being changed; the states laws are going to be changing; it's a unknown world. I feel for those folks. I read where $350 a month is the average benefit. That's just over $10 a day; and Smith's Food and Drug is offering hamburger at $5.33 a pound. Don't forget toilet paper at $2 a roll. If you've got a couple of kids they'll take care of that $10 a day quick enough!

Enough! Sorry I'm in such a happy mood. Have a great weekend; try to stay away from the fires and storms and crazy folks. And keep those hands clean!

Another wonderful month!

Life in the old lane! It's been quite a month. We can start with the 7 doctor visits we've had this last month plus my wife got one trip to the Emergency Room. Around here the ER tends to be conservative and unless there is really something going on they just tell you to go home and that's what they told her. Maybe with a new prescription or maybe not. Anyway, that was fun even if we didn't get home until something like 2:00 in the morning. And now that it is close to the 1st of the month I'm happy to say that we have 7 more doctor visits/tests scheduled for July not including my wife's surgery. Yes, she's having another ankle surgery to hopefully repair the one she had two years ago.

Then there are our 'children'. I'm talking about people over 50 years of age but still they did have parents! Don't get me wrong, it was great to see both of them and we had a good time talking up a storm. Anyway our son was here for 3 days and a week later we had our daughter for two days. Her visit was part of a business trip; his was just to check up on his mom. My wife is having trouble walking and talking. When she is on the phone especially her voice will kind of break up and I'm sure that motivated his visit. We have no idea what's going on there and her doctor is no help either. Her walking is going to change dramatically on July 2 when she has that ankle surgery! Then she'll be confined to the wheelchair for at least a month and who knows how the walking will end up. What the hell happened to taking the summer and seeing new parts of the world? Oh well.

Otherwise it's been a pretty normal summer in the Nevada desert. Our daily high is usually around 100 F (38 C) with breezes in the 10-15 mph range (15 to 25 kmph). That's the reason we have one air conditioner system for each side of the house! Nights get down to 65 to 70 F (18 - 21 C). If I fall asleep in my recliner and wake about 01:00 I can usually open the windows a bit. Rain? You've got to be kidding! We haven't even had snow on the mountains for at least 3 months.

So I've been sitting here at my computer reading the news quite a bit. How the hell did we get that group of idiots running our country? I didn't agree with Mr. Trump in his first term but I wasn't really worried about the way the country was being run. Now I'm getting pretty close to terrified. Is there a law or article of the Constitution that he hasn't broken? I think Mr. Trump is bad enough but that collection of sorry jerks he has 'helping' him is what is worrying me. Suppose he were to be found incompetent? President Vance? OMG! And Vance would be run over by the other idiots in the cabinet. Jeez! It's going to be a LONG 3 & 1/2 years let me tell you! Already you go to the grocery store and see the price differences; in another year it will be in everything from electronics to vehicles to gasoline to drugs. And, of course, when the prices of 'things' go up; so will service items. Already we have seen prices of lunch items go up or the item just disappears from the menu. We used to think that $30 for dinner at the local casino restaurant was a lot; now it's $50. And, trust me, that doesn't include wine or a tip! But we'll see what happens. I'm not optomistic.

So that's our world out here: aches and pains, lots of warmth and a bunch of idiots running the country. Talk about wonderful times! Hopefully I'll get back here before an entire month is up! Take care & be careful.

Life in the slow lane!

Well, it's been a while but I really don't have much of interest to talk about. We are still hitting the doctors way too much and they still aren't doing much to help either of us. My wife's ankle fusion surgery just keeps getting farther and farther away. My doctor and the ER people just don't have a clue what's going on with me so that's kind of dull too. My wife has been going to the gym and meeting with a personal trainer trying to build up some muscle since after the surgery she is going to be confined to a wheelchair for a month or two. I've been going with her and using the treadmill and the back strengthening exercises. Helping her in and out of that chair, bed and everywhere else isn't going to be fun for either of us!

I did come up with my own version of excitement. I was walking over to the window to close the window blind at night and managed to kick the leg of a chair with the little toe on my left foot! Talk about fun! Well, it slowed me down some but not all that much. I had a doctor's visit a couple days later so I asked him to look at it and he doesn't think it's broken or anything so it's just hobble around for a bit.

Yesterday we got up to 105 F so if you want to be outside you do it early! We've had some weeds growing in our front yard so I decided to work on removing them. I can only do about an hour a morning so it's taken me 3 mornings and I've still got some little stuff right next to the street. Now it's time for me to work on the back yard but I need to wait until next week; our trash can is full of weeds with no room for trash! LOL This pile is about 20% of what I did yesterday a.m. This bending over and pulling weeds at 76 years of age is no fun!

There was one fun thing I got to see. This guy was thinking of landing his balloon.

<div class="separator" It is an acre just like ours. When we moved in there was a hole dug like someone was going to lay gravel and put in a foundation for a house. The trees were MUCH smaller. There is a well on the property and it's been pumping water to those trees for the 16 years we've lived here but there has been absolutely nothing done about building a house. Weird.

Anyway, that's all that's fit to print about life out here right now. We can't go anywhere because of the constant doctor visits so if I manage any more photos they will probably be either weeds or balloons! Take care and have a good time!

Thrill a minute!

Well things are going just as exciting around here as usual. My wife and I are both bothering doctors or should I say they are bothering us? Her primary care doctor keeps writing up orders for weird tests. My wife's foot surgeon just seems so 'sometime' in the future. He seems like a really nice guy but he keeps going somewhere else. The April surgery is now more like a June surgery but that isn't even set up so it could be August if things keep sliding away.

Back in April my doctor asked for a blood test and found my platelets were low: they should be around 150K and were measured as 11K. But no one around here wanted to do anything about it. Then a week or so ago they thought about it again and sent me back to the ER. The ER decided they didn't have any specialist who could look at me so they sent me to Las Vegas. They kept me for about 24 hours, took at least 15 or 20 blood samples and told me I could go home. Grrr! At least I got a couple prescriptions this time. We'll see how all this works out. The screwy thing is that I feel just fine. But the doctors keep saying I could die at any moment.

Other than all the medical crap it's being a typical spring. One day 4 mph (6 kph) breeze and the next a 24 mph (38 kph) breeze. Fun in the desert doesn't always mean wearing shorts! Our house is turning 20 years old this year and when we get those 45 mph (72 kph) gusts it really shakes the windows! But, no, we aren't buying new windows!

The new cable internet system is supposed to be installed tomorrow. I have to admit to looking forward to that if only for the less 'twitchy' system. Well, let's hope it's an improvement! When some idiot takes out a telephone pole we might be out for a couple of days.

That's all the news fit to print. My latest photos are just dull so I won't inflict them on you. Take care and stay away from all those sick people!

Wow, 27 April!

This growing old is hard! I mean there are so many things that keep going wrong. Yesterday I went to one of the two grocery stores in town and the old guy in front of me at the self checkout left the stuff he just bought and but at least he noticed he didn't have anything and had to come back for it! Then I went to the other store and another old guy comes out with a cart full of stuff, stops by our car and says 'Oh, that isn't my car'! And off he went wandering around the parking lot. I'm also not talking about the stupid, lying crap that we get from our President and his ancient supporters in the House and the Senate. Invading Greenland; what shit!

Since we got home from our cruise we've mostly been going to doctors and we all know that isn't fun. To start with there is my wife's ankle. She broke it almost 2 years ago by slipping in the shower. She was airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital and had her ankle operated on to put it back together. Well, that was screwed up and she still cannot walk more than a couple hundred yards. So, of course, we've been talking to another surgeon about the ankle and he wants to freeze it. That should cut down on her ankle pain however she also has pain in her toes and no one is coming up with anything about that. But she is getting tested every way they can think of to make the surgery safe. Of course the surgeon is busy and can't do it this month and is going somewhere in May so we are looking at surgery in June and then a couple months of wheelchair before she can walk again!

Then there is me. I've noticed my eyesight is changing. When we are out driving in the day it is very bright; when I drive into the garage and close the door I can't see much of anything for at least a minute. That transition never used to be a problem; now days it's dangerous to get out of the car. You could step on all kinds of dangerous stuff! Clean up the garage? Oh, hell no! We donate to the VFW Food Pantry; when you have to go into the building it has no windows so you can't see a darned thing. And lots of those folks are as old as me!

We changed insurance companies at the first of the year and my old doctor doesn't take the new insurance so I've had to change doctors. Of course they want tests so I've gotten a bunch of tests as well. One of the tests said my blood platelet count was so low that the nurse called and said I should go to the emergency room and have a blood transfusion! So, off to the emergency room. They wanted to do their own tests so after FIVE HOURS of testing they proclaimed that the original test was wrong and I didn't need a transfusion. Well, that's good news but five hours??? And how many tests? I've had so many x-rays that I might be in danger of radiation poisoning (just kidding, I think).

So that's life in the fast lane around here. One day is overcast and 50 F (10 C) and the next is sunny and 90 F (32 C). Get up; feed the dog and the birds; pick a few weeds; have breakfast; then the fun stuff! Visit the doctor or whatever; sometimes we get visitors. Lately our electric co-op is trying to bring 5G internet to the town. A few months ago they ran lines along with the power lines that already hang behind the house. Now they are trying to connect the houses to those lines and that takes quite a few visits! One person to identify the electric entry to the house, a guy to spray paint showing where the power line runs and a couple of guys to dig a trench and bury a cable from their line to our house. We are told that there will be someone else to connect the line to the house then another to attach the line to our modem but they are in the future somewhere. It should be installed in a month or six at the rate they are going!

It is also true that there isn't much going on around here. There are some houses being built; that is VERY different from a few years ago but, still, it's not really affecting us. We do drive around and check out the new stuff but it's just concrete and plywood and shingles. The sunsets are still pretty good though.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I have to admit that he isn't as stupid as the people he's appointed to be in his cabinet but, well, that would be a stretch. The reporting is on the pvtimes.com website and her name is Michele Fiore.

Anyway, that's it for today. Have a good one and stay away from those sick people!

Ok, another month....

But at least I have an excuse this time: we've been traveling! Back on 20 February we took Gus to the dog kennel and headed for Las Vegas. The next morning we flew off to Miami (crappy seats & a fat 3rd person!) then on to Barcelona, Spain! Yep, another Viking cruise in the Med. I know, it's a tough life!

Of course one of my excuses for not posting is that my new HP computer is FAR from friendly with the camera. Damn, it took 3 or 4 tries and reading stuff online to figure out how to upload any photos. I mean that's just stupid. And the photos from my phone are just crap. Grrr!

The cruise was really quite nice but it was definitely a one-day-at-a-port cruise. We got to visit a few places we've been before and a few new ones. First on the list was Corsica. We've been there before but this time we found a weird back road tour. It was pretty enough but the driver often had to make a partial turn then back up and turn more; the road was that jack-knifed and narrow. If we averaged 10 mph I'd be surprised.

Because of my wife's broken ankle that still isn't fixed correctly we kept to the bus tours. We took her wheelchair along but mostly it got used in the airports. She got around on the ship ok as long as we took regular pauses for rest. It's funny but many of those rest areas served wine. Thank goodness!

Our next port was Civitavecchia, Italy. There is no way we were going to take a bus tour of Rome (it's at least an hour and a half each way) so we just stayed on the ship. I'm sure the town is nice but there wasn't any tour that called to us: too much walking for one thing. It is a pretty port though.

Our next port was the town of Valleta on the island of Malta. We did manage to find a bus tour that took us around with the guide pointing out various buildings, etc. It wasn't our favorite tour for sure and part of the problem was the roads: tiny isn't a small enough word to describe them!

Because of my wife's difficulty walking we usually got the front bus seats so we were right behind either the driver or the guide. It sure gives you a better view of oncoming traffic! Shit-oh-dear! Happily the driver of that truck had room to back up and off the road. What a great guy!

Next stop was La Goulette, Tunisia. We took another bus tour but they forgot to mention that we'd be walking for about an hour. Nope! We just stayed on the bus. One of the things that surprised me was how the local drivers were totally unafraid of accidents. I mean red lights are a suggestion; lanes don't mean a thing. It's just amazing and as we got farther into Africa, it got worse! I got a few photos from the parking lot but, well, that's not to exciting. There was this guy snoozing next to a window.

We took a bus tour again. In one area we actually got out and I got to push my wife around in her chair! Happily it was only a couple of blocks but those paving stones can be pretty tough on both the rider and the pusher.

Our next point of interest was the Strait of Gibraltar - we've been through it a couple of times but it's usually at night! So this time it was supposed to be earlier; around sunset. Unfortunately it was foggy so all we could see were a few lights! Maybe in out next lifetime we'll see it.

The next port was Casablanca, Morocco! We got to visit a church we weren't able to enter and one that we could. Who knows how that crap is worked out! The one we got to visit had some pretty fantastic windows!

<div class="separator" Of course all those containers are beautiful as well. LOL.

So it was time to leave Africa and head back to Europe. Our first stop would be Cadiz, Spain. width="320" />

Yeah, I know, life in the slow lane. Anyway, that's what took up the end of February and the first part of March. We got off the ship in Barcelona at about 08:00 a.m. and headed for the airport. It was a couple hours until we got on our flight to London; then more waiting in London. Do I have to say there was lots of wheelchair time in both airports? Then, finally, a non-stop to Las Vegas! I got some sleep on that trip; no dinner but a nice sleep. And we got home about 8 p.m. local time. Well, it took us each about three days to get back to regular hours; that 8 hour difference between Europe and the West Coast of the USA is quite a lot.

So we are back to our usual stuff: lunch at our favorite places; doctor appointments and fooling with our new computers. I'll post again when anything exciting happens. Don't hold your breath!

Geez, it's been almost a month!

Well, as usual, things are pretty quiet around here. Some guys came and placed a 40 foot container on the lot across the road from our house but nothing else has happened over there. And a digging machine came to a lot a couple of lots down but the didn't do much except scrape the ground. Weird, weird stuff. It's obvious I don't know anything about the construction business!

It's been typically winter around here except the mountains haven't had much snow. We have some now but it's been dry most of the winter. That bothers us because our water comes from an aquifer that is filled with melted snow water. We really like it here but are worried that the water will run out. What do you do then except leave? We have 20 F (6.6 C) nights and 45 F (7.2C) days mostly and then we'll get a 60 F (15.5C) day. Who knows!

Lately I've been beating my head against the wall thinking about old age problems. I'm cruising on for 77 and my wife will be 75 here pretty soon. I still want to do younger guy stuff like driving around with an RV or going off-roading or traveling overseas but it's obviously getting more difficult. My wife breaking her ankle a couple years ago certainly slowed us down but now days simple stuff like climbing the ladder to replace an air filter is even getting difficult. Our kids are both well over 1,000 miles away so it's not like they are going to be helping us out. We will have to find a local 'handman' to do all that crap. Fun and games in old age!

However, it is still a pretty place! Especially in the morning or the evening; daytime is just pretty bright. Here is a recent sunset.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPG30fzd_q6ByE3lOyY5A4qerYQaVltqMN4pbktSREdTM1tyOPcezPcnYGbqimXscIrbucDr5Wn4ka7ozbao22ObqfZjmSqmJEuokpcDvS2Nm8N5JKRAsyPeGiAFadj1tf-HI4VuomLdSpPETT0f82vTnhmH0AWq5B1yW7lJxf-N8YQZAW8Ntw3w/s4080/PXL_20250202_012733246.jpg" They are usually nothing. But this time we got rain! AND the mountains got snow! That is really important because the snow will melt and end up in our aquifer meaning that we have water to drink! I know lots of local folks grow trees and have lawns full of grass but my wife and I are pretty aware of living in the desert. We have TWO cactus plants and that's it on our 1 acre home site. We and our dog drink water and we (people!) shower every couple of days and that's our water usage. We still worry about the aquifer. What can I say? Old farts worry about everything.

We managed to visit our dermatologist last week. My wife just basically has dry skin that bothers her. I had one episode of skin cancer that ended up in a Mohs operation. They just basically scrape off the skin until they don't see any cancer there any more. Fun? No. Effective? Yes. And I've got a nice little dent in the skin on my head to prove it. This time the dermatologist found some spots on my skin that he didn't like so he pulled out the freezing spray and knocked out 13 spots! They will go away but for now I've got nasty little spots all over my body.

Of course when I open up my phone or computer I immediately find some stupid thing our new President or his incompetent staff has done. I mean the "Gulf of America"? What an asshole! Now "Gulf of the Americas" would at least make a little sense but it's been what it is for hundreds of years. Taking over Greenland? I mean I'm sure there are valuable minerals in those mountains; and it makes flying over Russia a much shorter trip; but you don't just go take what you want in this world. I like my neighbor's car but I'm not going to go steal it! I like the waitress in the casino but I don't just get to jump on her! No, asshole is too mild a term for Mr. Trump and his cronies. I can only hope that we and the rest of the world will manage to remain calm and peaceful for the next four years.

I read several blogs where people are visiting Mexico and South America. I see trucks full of bananas and wood and meat. I know a certain amount of those things are headed for the USA. Don't worry, those tariffs the idiot wants to impose will only make everything you buy more expensive! Look at the fish in your grocery store: product of Chile. Look at almost anything you buy from Amazon: product of China. Don't worry; another 20% tariff will only be passed on to you by every retailer.

Life in the fun lane, huh? Well, the good news is that it is warming up and we are going out to lunch at our favorite Japanese restaurant. They haven't raised their prices in a year or so. Next year will probably see the $10 lunch be $13 but we are here now. It was 23 F ( -5C) this morning and now we are up to 45 F (7 C) so that's a good thing. Gas and diesel are in the low $3 range; who knows what will happen there? Nevada fuel taxes are kinda nasty. We've been talking about an electric vehicle because it's only at most a 150 mile round trip to Las Vegas. We could charge the thing here at home basically for free because of our solar panels. But driving to Oklahoma City to visit our daughter would cost a bit - both money and time! It's over 1,100 miles so that would be 4 days of full charge on most of them. We'll see.

So take care & try to stay away from the sick folks.

Quiet times!

We've been just having some quiet days. Our daughter has a convention in Las Vegas this week so she came to check in on us last weekend but that's pretty much all that is going on.

I saw part of the inauguration on tv; what an asshole we have now for president! Oh yeah, let's take the canal from Panama. I kind of think it's a tie for most stupid idea between taking the canal back or invading Greenland. Of course renaming the Gulf of Mexico is pretty painless but damn dumb too. And I'm pretty sure the Canadian's aren't going to be looking forward to becoming the 51st state! LOL I mean, really, who can make up shit like this? And he's just been elected President of the USA? Well, J**** F****** C*****. I just hope every idiot who voted for that asshole gets something really special in return! And I mean something that really hurts!

I was reading a blog this morning and the writer was talking about enjoying taking photos on their travels. It reminded me that I used to enjoy that too so I started looking for my camera and my wife's camera. I found the cameras but finding the chargers for their batteries; well, that's a different story! Maybe in a couple more days I'll find them. Happily we aren't going anywhere soon so there is time. Still, it's annoying that I managed to hide them away so completely. What an idiot! (Not the vote for Trump kind but still pretty dumb!) It's also funny the weird things I'm finding that I've bought over the years: weird little flash lights, various chargers, old phones. Oh, what a past life I've had!

We've been having morning temps in the 15 F (-10 C) range plus some wind so 's been pretty chilly. Still, it's winter so I should be used to it! A few days ago a couple of guys came and dropped a 40 foot container on the lot across from us. No one has been back to do anything but I'm expecting a crew will show up pretty soon and start building a new house over there. We've had 4 or 5 new houses go up in the area in the last year so another one sounds reasonable. Other than that I don't have much to report.

Take care & keep away from those sick folks!

Wow, almost a month without a word!

Well, actually that's not too unusual for me! Unfortunately! But then again things aren't changing a bunch around here. It's still in the 20 F (5 C) area at night; 50-60 F (20-25C) in the daytime; and fairly sunny. We did have a couple days of 20 mph wind but that too is gone.

We have had several homes built in our area in the last 6 or 8 months and the other day a couple guys dropped a container in the lot across the street from us so I'm expecting a new home to be built there during the next few months. We'll see what happens. Otherwise it's the old retired fart usual stuff: visit the doctor, go buy groceries, go buy booze, dah dah dah.

Of course we are getting a new President and he is managing to make an ass of himself in a different way almost every day. I mean 'The Gulf of America' - take over the Panama Canal - the 51st state of Canada - the 52nd state of Greenland - WTF??? The guy's just bat-shit crazy! And some of the people who are going to be running the various departments; I'm afraid they are probably worse! I've said it before but all those people who voted for Mr. Trump are going to be sorry about their votes and probably sooner than later! It does make one think of moving out of the country but, well, 1) where would one go, and 2) what's going to stop Trump from taking that place over next? I mean the 53rd state of Portugal? Who knows?

Well, as an older white guy with a pension (small, believe me!) and Social Security and some savings; I should be ok. It's the lady who cleans our house (very Mexican); the people at one of our favorite restaurants (Japanese); the guy at the garage (pretty Mexican); they are the people who might not be here in a year. Oh, but we will have lots of new computer designers from where-ever to design the new Tesla. Grrr!

As you can tell I'm kind of obsessed with political thoughts these days. I read blogs about people who are just having fun trying to catch some fish or traveling in Mexico or trying to take good photos of birds. I need to follow their lead. My blood pressure will thank me! And I can't remember the last time I used a real camera; all I do these days is use the phone. Damn, I'm lazy & it's easy. Now I just have to learn how to connect the phone/camera with this new computer. That's a problem but I'll get there.

Take care & keep away from all those sickies out there.

Aging is such fun! Ha!

I've been reading a few blogs daily for some time; one being thebayfieldbunch.com. It is some information about a couple, Kelly and Al, who did quite a lot of rv travel and finally retired to a place in Canada. The lady, Kelly, passed away yesterday after a severe bout of liver disease. It is terrible to hear of her passing but not being ill every single day; not being in pain every single day; it's a relief in some ways.

My wife broke her ankle 2 years ago and still isn't walking well. Her doctors aren't managing to do anything right! But she's not ill. Having her taking every sort of pain medication and just having it knock her out; that's a hell on earth! I feel so sorry for Al but at least Kelly's awful illness is over.

I'm lucky; there isn't much wrong with me but there is always tomorrow! And in the mean time I read about Mr. Trump and the bunch of rich assholes he is going to inflict on us. And that's worse than most illness! There aren't any words strong enough to say what I feel about those idiots. The one redeeming feature is that the folks who voted for Trump will know soon enough how they screwed up when they voted him into office.

If you've bought anything electronic lately; that price will go up. If you've bought a vehicle; that price will go up. If you've bought lunch; that price will go up. Oh, and your Medicare coverage will go down. And your GI retirement will go down. And your social security income will go down. And finding someone to fill jobs at your business will be even more difficult. And finding someone to repair things around your house will be more difficult.

Don't worry, voting for a draft dodger, felon and molestor of women will come back to bite those folks. Oh, and then there is the total unknown he chose as Vice President. When Mr. Trump is declared incompetent, which might be pretty soon from the way he talks in interviews and on stage; then we are going to get more surprises. I can't even guess what will happen then!

Life goes on. Keep away from those sick folks and keep washing your hands!

Well, it's gone Thanksgiving!

Yes, I know it's been a while since I posted but I've got a great excuse: travel! Yep, we've been off to see the family. Our daughter is stop one in Oklahoma; our son is stop two in Arkansas and my wife's uncle is stop three in Florida. No, we don't party for days and days with them. We stop for a couple of days then head on. It's still a 3 week trip! OMG! Our 16 year old truck is getting close to 100,000 miles! In addition, my wife was on one of the DNA sites and discovered she has two half brothers who are living in Florida! So we got to meet them and their wives; they are all very nice people. One of the half brothers is a couple years younger than my wife (early 70's); the other is about the same as our son (early 50's). Talk about different lives!

We have been talking about moving back to Florida; this right-wing rural Nevada gets kind of old. We'd been talking about St. Petersburg, FL. Well, that's a wash! I was looking at places on Zillow and the prices were just crazy; not to mention nasty looking. And the traffic was on the other side of awful. Ok, maybe we'll be looking elsewhere or even staying around here. Who knows?

My wife was talking about going down the Texas coast and checking out Brownsville. I just couldn't do it. We'd just been in too many motel rooms and the thought of adding three or four more to the list was just more than I could do. 5,600 miles in 3 weeks is a lot for this old geezer. And, of course, there are the rest of the world's problems going on.

I'm confident that all those Trump supporters are going to figure out what a bad decision they made. And those idiots who didn't vote; what can you say about them? I mean I already started with the word 'idiot'! It's got to go downhill from there. Already one of Mr. Trump's cabinet possibles has dropped out: I mean Mr. Trump knows how to molest women, does he need instruction on molesting underage women? Gaetz could do the job, of course, but, well, who thinks Mr. Trump need instruction in that area? But, really, putting a tariff on imported goods will just raise prices: Walmart has already suggested that prices will rise with the tariffs. Don't worry, it will be Biden's fault! And listen to Mr. Vance about women and children!

I cannot understand a lot of the people who are supposed to have voted for Mr. Trump. I mean why would Latino people vote for someone who wants to eject immigrants? Why would ANY woman vote for a molester? Or someone who supports a ban on abortion? Why would any law abiding person vote for a felon? I guess I could go on but you get the idea: WTF is with the American public? I'm an Army vet. One of my First Sergeants was of Mexican extraction: he was great! My wife was molested by her stepfather as a child; why would anyone vote for a molester? I'm thinking using a gun on them would be too easy. Using a whip or just a stick would be lots better especially if it was more painful and took longer. No, I'm not threatening Mr. Trump but if someone else were do do so.....

I have one final excuse for not posting anything lately: I bought a new computer and getting the thing to work is driving me crazy! First of all it's got all kinds of new software that I've never even heard of. Then it's got Windows 11. Between all the weird software and the new operating system; well, I may as well be using a machine using Chinese! Maybe one of these days I'll get some new photos loaded but don't hold your breath! Take care & keep washing those hands.
