Most of the people I know don't have the time to make chocolate chip cookies from scratch. This gift makes it so much easier for them to enjoy the taste of made from scratch cookies in the time it takes to make box cookies. I hope you will find this to be as enjoyable of a gift as I do.

What you will need:

1 quart mason mar

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 cups (9 ounces) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

What you will need to do:
In a bowl combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Pour that mixture into your mason jar. You can add the rest of your ingredients into the jar in any order you wish.

What you will need to include:
On a sheet of paper include the recipe.

PREHEAT oven to 375° F. Beat 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) softened butter or margarine, 1 large egg and 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until blended. Add cookie mix; mix well, breaking up any clumps. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

You can also decorate the jar anyway you like. This always makes for a great gift.

-Lux

There smoothies are amazingly good. I know there are Orange Julius' all over the area but it's just not the same. I think, however, that I have come pretty close to matching the yummy yummy Jamba Juice goodness.

What you will need:

Blender

10-14 Ice Cubes

6-7 Frozen Strawberries

One 6oz tub of Blueberry yogurt (I use yoplait light.)

I start preparing for my morning smoothie the night before by taking the frozen strawberries and putting them in a bowl in the refrigerator, so they are easier to blend in the morning.
When morning rolls around I start by putting my strawberries in first with my yogurt. I set the blender to low and puree. Once the strawberries and yogurt are blended well, I start adding the ice I add about 3 at a time so I don't break the blender. Once all the ice cubes are blended in, I set the blender to high and liquefy for about 2 minutes. Once it's done blending you are ready to enjoy your drink!

If you have any other smoothie recipes let me know I would love to try them.

-Lux

I really could use a job right about now. I have sent out hundreds of resumes with little response. This is really starting to bother me. I am an awesome employee. I am a hard worker and I do everything I can to make the lives of the people I work for easier. Do these things not matter anymore? Is it all about what type of degree you have and how much you spent on that fancy piece of paper?

It really sickens me. There are so many people who have such amazing skills and they don't even get a chance at a job because someone with a degree gets the job. It annoys me even more when their degree has nothing to do with the job.

The type of job I am looking for is clerical work. What kind of degree do you need for that? I have the skills, I have the experience now, all I need is the job.

Another thing that bothers me is the Craigslist scam jobs. What is wrong with people today? You want to pretend to offer up a job but then you want me to upload my resume on some sketchy looking website. I have already emailed you my resume. Do you really think I am stupid enough to now upload it on some website? Or my other personal favorite, the do your own background check so we can steal your Social Security Number. Do I really look that dumb?

Why is finding a job so hard? I really don't understand it. I really loved this I hope you do to.

40 Things That Only Happen in the Movies

Did you ever notice that certain things only happen in the movies, but never happen in real life? For example:

It is always possible to find a parking spot directly outside or opposite the building you are visiting.

When paying for a taxi, don’t look at your wallet as you take out a note. Just grab one out at random and hand it over. It will always be the exact fare.

Television news bulletins usually contain a story that affects you personally at the precise moment it’s aired.

Creepy music (or satanic chanting) coming from a graveyard should always be closely investigated.

Any lock can be picked with a credit card or paperclip in seconds. UNLESS it’s the door to a burning building with a child inside.

If you decide to start dancing in the street, everyone you bump into will know all the steps.

All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red digital displays so you know exactly when they are going to explode.

Should you wish to pass yourself off as a German officer, it will not be necessary to learn to speak German. Simply speaking English with a German accent will do. Similarly, when they are alone, all German soldiers prefer to speak English to each other.

Once applied, lipstick will never rub off. Even while scuba diving.

The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window of any building in Paris.

Any police officer about to retire from the force will more often than not die on their last day (especially if their family have planned a party). (Caveat: Detectives can only solve a case after they have been suspended from duty).

Getaway cars never start first go. But all cop cars do. (They will also slide to a dramatic stop in the midst of a crime scene).

If staying in a haunted house, women should investigate any strange noises wearing their most revealing underwear.

On a police stake-out, the action will only ever take place when food is being consumed and scalding hot coffees are perched precariously on the dashboard…

All grocery shopping involves the purchase of French loaves which will be placed in open brown paper bags (Caveat: when said bags break, only fruit will spill out).

Cars never need fuel (unless they’re involved in a pursuit).

If you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involving martial arts, your opponents will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around you in a threatening manner until you have defeated their predecessor.

If a microphone is turned on it will immediately feedback.

Guns are like disposable razors. If you run out of bullets, just throw the gun away. you will always find another one.

All single women have a cat.

Cars will explode instantly when struck by a single bullet.

No matter how savagely a spaceship is attacked, its internal gravity system is never damaged.

If being chased through a city you can usually take cover in a passing St Patrick’s Day parade – at any time of the year.

The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. Nobody will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any other part of the building undetected.

You will survive any battle in any war UNLESS you show someone a picture of your sweetheart back home.

Prostitutes always look like Julia Roberts or Jamie Lee Curtis. They have expensive clothes and nice apartments but no pimps. They are friendly with the shopkeepers in their neighbourhood who don’t mind at all what the girl does for a living.

A single match is usually sufficient to light up a room the size of a football stadium.

It is not necessary to say “Hello” or “Goodbye” when beginning a telephone conversation. A disconnected call can always be restored by frantically beating the cradle and saying “Hello? Hello?” repeatedly.

One man shooting at 20 men has a better chance of killing them all than 20 men firing at once (this is known as Stallone’s Law).

When you turn out the light to go to bed, everything in you room will still be visible, just slightly bluish.

Plain or even ugly girls can become movie star pretty simply by removing their glasses and rearranging their hair.

Rather than wasting bullets, megalomaniacs prefer to kill their enemies with complicated devices incorporating fuses, pulleys, deadly gases, lasers and man-eating sharks.

All beds have special L-shaped sheets that reach to armpit level on a woman but only up to the waist of the man lying beside her.

Anyone can land a 747 as long as there is someone in the control tower to talk you down.

During all police investigations it will be necessary to visit a strip club at least once.

You can always find a chainsaw when you need one.

Most musical instruments (especially wind instruments and accordions) can be played without moving your fingers.

In Middle America, all gas station attendants have red handkerchiefs hanging out of their back pockets.

All teen house parties have one of every stereotypical subculture present (even people who are not liked and would never get invited to parties).

Trucks use their horns at random (no hang on, that happens in real life too!).

I hope you enjoyed it! Now, my next task is to find work. Not to hard right? I have had 2 interviews that went well. I would really like the job at Farmers Insurance. It sounds like such a great place to work. Anyways, I have decided that since I have no money to send on coffee. I am going to turn this blog in to whatever I want it to be about! I have been so busy trying to sublet my apartment. I have not had the money to go visit any cafes recently. I have however, been reading the second most awesome book series. It is the story about Stephanie Plum, amature bounty hunter. I really enjoy the way Janet Evanovich writes these stories. There is so much detail it makes me feel like I am standing right there with Stephanie ready to take down the latest FTA. If you like murder/mystery books go to your local book store and buy the first book in the series One for the Money. The other book series I have been enjoying is the Izzy Spellman series. Izzy is a professional PI who can't seem to keep her nose out of other peoples business. Not only can she not stop investigating cases, she also cannot stop investigating her family. That is a major family trait. While you are at your local bookstore getting One for the Money, also go ahead and pick up The Spellman Files.

Hopefully, soon I will be able to stop at a cafe soon. If you have a favorite coffee shop you would like me to visit please leave me a comment and let me know!!!

- Lux

Well, I guess I will give you the bad news first.

Bad News: It's just like a band aid, you just have to spit it out. Well, I am moving back to Wisconsin. It has been an idea that has been rolling around in my mind for a while now. My boyfriend and I have been thinking about it. We need to start saving money and living in Chicago at the moment will not help that. We have a future to think about. I know you will miss my reviews in the Chicago area but that is why I still have good news.

Good News: I will still keep the blog going. While I am looking for a job I will be writing just about coffee. Once I get set up in Wisconsin I will start my reviews again and for all of you in Chicago, I will be coming down here once in a while and when I am here I will make it a point to find a coffee shop to review.

Stay tuned for my review on Cafe Jumping Bean

-Lux

I was super excited about this place, mostly because of the name. I should have learned by now that a place with a great name doesn't always have great coffee.

We sat down and the server gave us a menu. Alex ordered a Mocha and I ordered a bottomless cup of coffee and a turkey sandwich. I received my coffee and we waited for Alex to get his Mocha and for my sandwich to arrive. When my sandwich arrived Alex had still not received his Mocha so, he flagged down the server to ask about it. She told him that she didn't hear him and she apologised and had his Mocha made right away.

While I was drinking my first cup of coffee, I was disappointed. The coffee was extremely weak. It was about one step up from Sacred Grounds coffee but I was determined to get my moneys worth.

While drinking my coffee, I munched on my sandwich. The sandwich was amazing. The portions were more then enough especially for the price. The thing that really bothered me is that I had to flag down the waitress every time I wanted a refill on my coffee. Now I have been a waitress ad I know that when you are extremely busy you may not always have the time to go around with coffee but, she was not that busy she spent a lot of time talking with her co-workers when she should have been refilling my cup.

We ended up leaving about an hour later. I loved the art work, the waitress was very friendly and the place was very comfortable but I don't see myself returning.

Overall Rating: 2/5

-Lux

So, since I was heading to that part of the city I Googled a cafe that was in the area, and dragged my good friend, Alex, along. What I didn't realize was that Sacred Grounds was not just close to Water Tower Place, it was actually inside. Learning that fact should have made us turn around and find some place else to go but, I like to believe that a great cafe can be found in the most unique places.

Alex and I stepped up to take a look at the menu. We decided to get the Sacred Ground Blend. As soon as we paid our drinks were ready. We stepped over to the counter to add our sugar and cream, then headed over to sit down at the only table.

Upon taking that first sip, I was completely disgusted. I have never had a cup of coffee so weak. It was as if they had brewed the coffee with 4 single grounds of coffee. Just enough to allow the hot water to take on a brown like hue. Is this how cheap we have become? Where even a cup of coffee can't be brewed properly. I couldn't believe i paid $2.25 for a cup of hot water.

I thought about running out of there, but the sticky table wouldn't allow me to budge. My notebook was literally stuck to the table. I would have slightly understood if they were super busy and they just didn't have time to clean their only table., but they were dead and they were all standing around talking.

When Alex and I could no longer stand the sticky table and the smell from the bathrooms (which was located a few feet behind us), we decided it was time to leave. I was completely disappointed by this place. Aside from the ultra friendly staff, there was not even a decent thing about this place to write about. Hopefully our next adventure will prove otherwise.

Over all rating: 1.5/5
Alex's over all rating: 2/5

-Lux

Grandville). I was stunned when I walked in to see how big this place was! They offered multiple rooms for people to sit down and enjoy their coffee. There were a ton of tables and a few comfy looking couches.

I stepped up to the counter to view their menu which included a wide selection of different coffee and espresso drinks. What caught my eye first was the prices, I was surprised at how reasonable they were. For the medium red eye that I ordered, it was only $2.25.

After ordering our drinks, I really had to use the bathroom. I was happy to see that their bathroom was very clean. When I was finished tending to my business, I walked out to find my drink ready. I headed over to the counter that held their sugar and cream. It was awesome to see such variety of things you can add to your drink. Aside from your regular sugar and cream, they also had cinnamon sticks. They also provided a toaster for your bagels and toast.

I was slightly disappointed with the fact that I did indeed receive my drink in a to-go cup, which you all know really irks me. Although they do use regular mugs too.

When our drinks were filled with sugar and cream to our liking, we sat down in the back of the cafe. Alex noticed they had quite a few games that we could play. He decided on a game called Fact or Crap. We played that for a while as we sipped on our red eyes.

The red eyes were out of this world! The coffee was strong but not bitter. The coffee and espresso were brewed to perfection. I could tell that these baristas were trained well and put a lot of care in to their drinks.

Over all I think this was the best place I have found yet. So, what do I do? I grab the $2.50 tin of hazelnut target brand coffee (which is actually rather delicious), turn on the coffee pot and get comfy! But what happens when the coffee is gone, and all I have left is the grounds? There must be something we can do with them besides throwing them out. I did some research and have found some really awesome uses for your old coffee grounds.

Beauty

1. Softens and Adds Shine to your Hair
I thought this one was quite interesting. After you wash your hair rub 2 tablespoons of used coffee grounds in your hair. Your hair will become amazingly soft and shiny. But, you beautiful brunettes out there, be warned it will also add some highlights to your hair. Not that it's always a bad thing.

2. Exfoliant
Coffee grounds make for a wonderful exfoliant. Add a little bit to your facial cleanser for softer, fresher feeling skin.

3. Facial Mask
You can make a wonderful facial mask with your used coffee grounds. All you need to do is add 1 egg white and 1/4 of a cup of used grounds. Your face will love you for it.

4.Cellulite Remover
Many expensive, high-end cellulite removers contain coffee as one of their main ingredients. But why spend all of that money when you can just reuse your old coffee grounds? Mix 1/4 of a cup of warm used coffee grounds with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stand on an old towel or newspaper and apply the mixture to the affected area. Wrap it in shrink wrap and leave on for 10 minutes. Unwrap the shrink wrap and brush off the grounds. Shower with warm water. It is suggested to do this twice a week for best results. I also recommend using the coffee ground hair treatment as mentioned above.

Around the House

5. Deodorize your Refrigerator and Freezer
Stop buying all of the baking soda and start reusing your old coffee grounds. Used coffee grounds can help get rid of all of those smells in your refrigerator or freezer. Use an old nylon or a coffee filter and combine a 1/2 of a cup of used grounds with 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Replace it once a month.

6. Remove Fragrant Smells from your Hands
When I cut onions or garlic I am always left with the smell on my hands. No matter how many times I wash my hands I can't get rid of the smell. I recently tried rubbing my used coffee grounds on my hands to get rid of the smell and it worked wonders!

7. Dye
You can use your old coffee grounds to dye fabric, Easter eggs, or anything else you like by taking 2 tablespoons of grounds and soaking it in a cup of boiling water for 5 to 10 minutes.

8. Cooking
You can add a bit of flavor to food by using coffee grounds. For cooking I would suggest using fresh grounds. It is a great way to use of those last few scoops of grounds. You can use it as a meat tenderizer or as a steak rub. Try rubbing it on your steak and allowing it to soak in overnight. Also try adding some fresh grounds to your chocolate cake or brownies.

9. Kitchen Drains
I know there are some morning where I walk past my kitchen sink and it smells as if something has died in there. I decided to try putting some grounds down the drain and it worked like a charm! It left my kitchen drain smelling fresh for weeks!

10. Flea Repellent
When washing your dog, use a some old grounds. It will keep those pesky fleas away and leave your dog with shiny soft fur!

In the Garden

11. Fertilizer
Used grounds and filters can make for an awesome fertilizer. You can use them on your indoor plants or plants that thrive on acidic soil.

12. Compost
If you have started a compost at home make sure to add your coffee grounds and filters to it. It will make a great addition to all the other things you add. Plus, it will allow your yummy veggies and flowers to grow big and strong!

13. Garden Pest Repellent
Along with being a great fertilizer coffee will also help keep all of those annoying pests away. It will keep slugs, snails and heck, even ants away.

If you have any other uses please let me know and if you try any of these please let me know how they work out for you.

-Lux

Irving Park Road.) When I stepped in I was slapped in the face with the most obnoxious smell! It smelled as if they had been cooking human flesh all day. I knew from that moment I had to make my review quick. I couldn't stay there to long.

Coronas is not the place I thought it would be. I assumed by the name is was a coffee shop but I was strongly mislead. This place is a sandwich shop/brunch spot with a few coffee drinks.

I placed an order for a mocha with an extra shot of espresso and the lady gave me a look like I had just ordered human brains on a plate. I thought, "This is a coffee shop right? Your menu does say you can make a mocha."

While I was waiting for the confused older lady to make my drink, I took a quick look around. I noticed their sitting area which wasn't to bad. It looked pretty comfy. As I continued to wait, I saw another 2 people come in. With a now total of 5 customers inside I started to feel a bit cramped, like just to get out I was just going to have climb over them just to get out.

After about 10 minutes I got my order. I ran out, climing over the other patriens to reach the door, which seemed so far away. I have never in my life been so excited to breathe the fresh Chicago air!

I started on my way home, and I took my first sip of my drink. I was completely shocked to discover that she had given me not a mocha, but coffee with chocolate syrup. I couldn't help but laugh. I just paid $4 for coffee with chocolate syrup.

Overall Rating: 2/5

-Lux

Today's BIG disappointment was none other than Awake Cafe (located at 736 W. Irving Park Rd.). I decided before heading out to Awake to stop off at the library first, I was in desperate need of something new to read.

On my way to Awake I noticed it was pretty close to my apartment which is always a plus. However, everything basically went down hill from there. When I arrived at Awake I walked in (well I guess you could say walked but with the floors that sticky I had to peal my shoes from the floor with every step) and looked for a menu, not really to see what they had, I am pretty much aware of what most cafes have, but to view the prices. I asked the young girl behind the counter if they had a menu. I got RUDELY told that they had a paper menu but for future reference I could just turn around. I was quite put off by how rude she was. Never in my life have I experienced such a shitty person.

I turned around to look at their menu only to see some minuscule print that even someone with prefect 20/20 vision would need glasses to read. So, I grabbed a paper menu.

I ordered myself a red eye and a turkey and mozzarella on a pretzel roll. I asked for only lettuce and peppers on the sandwich. What I got in return for my $6.99 was a stale pretzel roll with half a slice of turkey, an almost see threw slice of mozzarella and some peppers with icky Dijon. Along with this pathetic sandwich I also got 3 small pieces of cantaloupe.

As soon as she brought out my sandwich she hurried in to the back room. After about 5 minutes she came back out and I asked her how long it would take for my red eye. She then looked at me like I was crazy and said they needed to make more coffee.

Let me make this clear, I was inside a COFFEE SHOP, where their biggest thing they sell is COFFEE and you have run out and didn't think to make more.... Are you serious???

Well, after that I got a bit irritated but still waited I mean I did pay for it. The girl then went back into the backroom came back a few minutes later, washed a few dishes then disappeared again. When she emerged, giggling with one of the other girls, I asked yet again for my red eye. She told me in almost barbaric tone that she was working on it. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE A RED EYE?!?! She then, finally, started to make the coffee and my red eye.

When I eventually got my red eye, I couldn't believe what they were serving me. They handed me slug in a cup. It was by far the WORST cup of coffee I have ever tasted. I felt completely jipped. I waited at least 15 minutes to get this crap!? I was outraged

Now aside from their lack of customer service skills, their shitty coffee and their lack of cleanliness the place was okay they had nice big tables and comfortable chairs and they even served you with mugs and not paper cups. However, I will never, ever in my life return here. To pay almost $3 for coffee and espresso is ridiculous especially when the staff is disgusting.

Overall Rating: 1/5

-Lux

It looked like a nice little place, and I loved that it was so close to the train. I quickly learned that being right under the train has quite a downfall. I couldn't believe that people were actually able to think with a train passing by every few minutes.

As I was looking over their menu two things caught my eye, first was their prices, the highest priced coffee drink was only $3.75 and some even went as low as $1.50. Now those were prices I can afford, especially with their dollar off coupons and their daily trivia to get another $.25 cents off! The next thing that caught my eye was an item called the red eye. The name intrigued me so much I just had to order it.

While I was paying for my drink I noticed how friendly the staff was. Even though they were quite busy they still took the time out to make small talk. Once I received my drink I sadly observed that it was in a paper cup. It may just be personal preference but I always feel that when I am given a paper cup I am expected to leave straight away. I find that a regular coffee mug makes for a much more cosy and homey feel. Plus, it is such a waste of paper.

After being slightly disappointed, I decided to let it be in hopes that this place could be the one. I took a seat on one of their leather couches. They looked so comfortable. Unfortunately I was wrong, the couch were horrid! It was like I was being sucked it. I quickly changed to one of their table which was not any more comfortable but at least I wasn't being sucked in.

I will say that for $2.60 it was not bad. The coffee was quite commendable. However, I don't foresee that I will be claiming this as my new cafe. I do think it will make for a lovely place to grab a quick coffee on my way way to work.

Overall rating: 3/5

-Lux

A cafe that not only serves a good cup of coffee but also prides themselves in their coffee. I need a place where I can read a book in peace or simply enjoy a nice conversation. I need a cafe that feels like it's a home away from home. A place where the staff is friendly and the shop is cosy.

I am on a mission to find this special place. So, join me on my adventure to find Chicago's best cafe! Follow me as I explore the best and the worst cafes that Chicago has to offer.

-Lux
