Sydney Institute of Marine Science 2011 Postgraduate Scholarships in Australia

Sydney Institute of Marine Science Foundation is offering 3 three-year SIMS Scholarships to post-graduate students in any discipline of marine science as additional support to students who have received an offer of, or who already hold an APA, APAI, international or equivalent scholarship at an Australian university. The work must be undertaken substantially at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in conjunction with a host university.

The SIMS Scholarships are for twelve thousand five hundred dollars ($12,500) each year for up to three years, beginning in 2011, paid at the beginning of each year, and may be used for research, travel or living expenses. An applicant must state clearly what the funds are requested for, and provide a supporting letter from their supervisor. Applicants should in addition provide a description (one page) of their project with their application, and a one page CV.

Students beginning their PhD program, or who have completed no more than one year of their candidature, are eligible. The Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis, with recipients chosen by the SIMS Foundation Research Committee. Scholars will provide annual progress reports on their research to the Committee, and are expected to give one presentation per year to the public. Funding in the second and third years of the Scholarships is subject to satisfactory progress having been achieved in the previous year(s).

Scholarships for the Public International Law and Human Rights Programme (LL.M), Latvia

Scholarships are available to students from Russia, Byelorussia, Ukraine and South Eastern Europe and Central Eurasia regions.

Each scholarship recipient will receive an amount covering tuition and fees for the LL.M study programme. An additional scholarship is allocated for travel, accommodation and incidental education expenses. Students granted a scholarship must write their master’s thesis in the field of public international law or human rights. Priority will be given to students who commit to work in any of the following areas upon completion of the programme: human rights, public law and public service. Furthermore, RGSL seeks to recruit students who have worked within an organization with which OSI has a relationship already, or students who are willing to work with such an organization upon completion of the programme. In the application, students are required to provide specific detail on their expectations work in a related field upon completion of the programme.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

1. Satisfy standard RGSL entry requirements (with respect to educational background and English proficiency);
2. Have experience in the fields of public international law or human rights for a minimum of one year;
3. Indicate in the application: current place of employment and specify in detail the applicant’s plan to return to work in the field of public service after completing the LL.M programme.

Applicants who will receive their diploma from previous studies later than on the date of application can submit the application with a reference to the expected date of receipt of their diploma, which, however, may not be later than the date on which the study year at RGSL starts.

If the diploma or degree is obtained outside Latvia, academic recognition has to be made by the Latvian Academic Information Centre (AIC). The application is registered after review from AIC is requested and received by the RGSL. The final decision regarding the qualification for admission is taken by RGSL.

MSc in Investment Analysis Scholarships – Karen Napier Scholarships

The Karen Napier Scholarships are generously funded by the Karen Napier Charity in memory of Karen, a graduate of the MSc in Investment Analysis. Each Scholarship will meet the course fees at the Home/EC rate and will offer £3,500 toward maintenance. In addition, the Accounting and Finance Division will waive the remainder of the course fees in the event that a Scholarship is awarded to an overseas fee paying applicant.
Who can apply?
Applicants may be of any nationality and must hold or expect to obtain an offer of a place on the full time MSc in Investment Analysis for entry in September 2011. Benefits for PhD students of the PhD program

The contracts will be extended by one additional year if satisfactory progress is made towards a PhD degree.

The ASEAN Foundation (AF) and NUS have entered into a new agreement to develop high quality human resources within ASEAN member countries through the ASEAN Foundation Research Scholarship.
The ASEAN Foundation, an initiative of the Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), was established on 15 December 1997 to help bring about shared prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries. It has been mandated to promote greater awareness of ASEAN and greater interaction among its peoples and their increased participation in ASEAN activities as well as to undertake development cooperation activities that enhance mutual assistance, address equitable economic development and reduce poverty. This scholarship programme is part of the ASEAN Foundation Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies and funded through the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund.
Two scholarship slots are available for ASEAN nationals (except Singapore citizens and permanent residents) who wish to pursue a Masters Degree by research in NUS. Selection of successful applicants will be based on merit.

Master Scholarships in VIsion & roBOTics (VIBOT), Erasmus Mundus, Europe

The VIBOT Master is divided into four semesters designed and developed to ensure a clear and structured educational progress in the field of computer vision and robotics, fully integrated among the three universities of the consortium:

* semester 1 (UB): fundamentals on image processing, sensors and acquisition, mathematics and computer sciences, are taught (basis) ;
* semester 2 (UDG): improvements on image processing and pattern recognition, complements on computer vision and medical imaging and an introduction on robotics are delivered (reinforcement);
* semester 3 (HWU): high-level processing and methods are introduced for real-time implementation and integration of vision and robotics (capitalization);
* semester 4 (research lab or company): research training in an applied or academic context (going further)

The overall objective is to start from science fundamentals and low-level image processing, and then to introduce mid-level image processing, computer vision and applications in medical imaging and to end with robotics and high-level integration so that the main methods and algorithms in the state-of-art of computer vision and robotics (through both a theoretical and applied point of view) are covered.

An induction week is organized each year in September during which the enrolled students are informed about the programme, the assessment and the rules. The induction week also permits new students to meet second-year students or former VIBOT students.

You can apply to VIBOT as a student or as a scholar (academic visitor). In the former case, prospective applicants are asked to first compile and submit the application form following criteria and requirements. The Erasmus Mundus programme “Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering” (COSSE) is a joint initiative of four European universities:

COSSE is a two-year master`s programme offering a double degree from two universities. The students enter one of the universities and continue the second year at one of the other institutions in another country. COSSE offers education of the highest international standard as well as a unique experience of meeting different European cultures, languages, climate and nature.

The EACEA (the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) awards 7 to 10 category A scholarships and 6 to 8 category B scholarships per Erasmus Mundus Master`s programme.
Category A scholarships (non-EU member states) can be awarded to applicants from non-EU member states (but not to applicants from Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland)

Who can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship (Action 1)?
Candidates who apply for an Erasmus Mundus Master Programme are at the same time considered for a scholarship nomination for this specific programme. The scholarships are awarded to the highest ranked candidates that fulfill the following scholarship conditions:

The applicant has applied correctly, fulfilled the admission requirements and is nominated for a scholarship by the EM consortium.
The applicant has not applied to more than three (3) Erasmus Mundus master`s programmes during one round of applications.
The applicant should be able to spend his study period in at least two of the consortium partner countries. These two countries must be different from the country in which the applicant has obtained his/her last university degree; the mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility, neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.
The applicant has not yet benefited from an EM master`s programme scholarship.
The applicant should not benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
The applicant should be enrolled as a full-time student and commit himself to participate in the master`s programme in accordance with the terms defined by the consortium in the Student Agreement. Failure to do so could lead to the cancellation of the scholarship.

We are seeking five PhD students across a range of system topics. We are seeking two PhD students to investigate the implications of photonic networks on future large-scale computer systems (such as data centres or scientific computers) with a focus on power consumption reduction. The work will involve modelling large systems of chip multiprocessors with photonic interconnect using FPGA-based emulation. These two positions are funded by the EPRSC grant EP/I004157/1, (http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/I004157/1)

We are seeking a further three PhD students for the `INTelligent Energy awaRE NETworks` (INTERNET) project whose vision is to reduce the carbon footprint of ICT networks by at least an order of magnitude – along with a corresponding reduction in non-renewable energy consumption.

PhD students would perform complimentary work across topics including: the investigation of energy-aware network protocol design and implementation for the migration of virtualised systems, performing research into the models of energy usage of networks in and between data centres, and the design and implementation of novel hardware-software interfaces. What is Sport and Exercise Psychology?
Sport and Exercise Psychology is the scientific study of people and their behaviour in sport and exercise contexts, and the practical application of that knowledge. The “International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE)”, is a two-year educational programme in the Erasmus Mundus framework. This master course is commonly organized by:

The main objective is creating an educational programme that provides the required knowledge for a professional fire safety engineer in a Performance Based Design environment. Besides interuniversity cooperation, student mobility in Europe is one of the main points of interest of the overall programme. The mobility structure, with possible change in study location after each semester, gives the students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of each of the three universities.

The classes in the first semester, covering basic topics in Fire Safety Engineering (FSE), can be attended in Ghent or Edinburgh. In the third semester, classes are again taught in Ghent (for general FSE) or Edinburgh (with focus on structural engineering in the context of FSE). The fourth semester is devoted to the Master’s thesis, hosted by one or more of the three institutes.
Non-European students are to be considered as “full scholarships” covering all necessary costs of the student during his/her study period in Europe. Over 2 years, the total amount of the scholarship is € 48,000. This amount of € 48,000 includes a fixed contribution of €8,000 to travel and installation, a contribution to the EMMC participation costs of € 8,000 per year (covering the annual tuition fees), and monthly installments of € 1,000 per month.
European students is considered as a “financial contribution”. Over 2 years, the total amount of the scholarship is € 20,000. This amount of € 20,000 includes a contribution to the EMMC participation costs of € 4,000 per year (covering the annual tuition fees), and monthly installments of € 500 per month.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are:

A Bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution (minimum 3 years full-time study or 180 ECTS credits) in civil / structural / mechanical / electrical / chemical / industrial engineering, material sciences, chemistry, physics, applied physics, architecture, urbanism and spatial planning or a related discipline. Students in their last year of such a Bachelor programme will however also be considered.
Sufficient English language ability.

English language ability is a basic requirement, therefore the applicants must provide us one of the following certificates as a proof of their knowledge:

An official certificate from your university stating that the standard language of instruction in your Bachelor and/or Master degree was English (if applicable);
or a recent (= maximum two years old) TOEFL Certificate: minimum score is 570 (paper-based), or 87 (internet-based) or higher. The institution code for Ghent University is 2643;
or a ‘test report form’ (TRF) from IELTS, maximum two years old, with a minimum score of 6.5;

Lotus is an Erasmus Mundus Action Two Partnership (EMA2) of European and Asian Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Associations aiming at fostering mutual enrichment and better understanding between the EU and Asia, through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills at higher education level and to co-operate in the following program activities:

Mobility of undergraduate and graduate students

The types of mobility to be funded are:

For students: undergraduate, master, doctorate and post-doctorate mobility opportunities
For academic staff: exchanges for the purposes of teaching, practical training and research

The intention of this project is to give South-East Asian students and staff the possibility to go to a European University to improve, enrich, learn, experience, …. their own knowledge and skills.

Eligibility criteria for students
Asian students who want to participate in mobility to the EU:

Must be a national of one of the third countries covered by the relevant lot;
Must have not resided nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of the European countries;
For target group 1 (TGI): students need to be registered at one of the third-country HEIs within the partnership. Undergraduate students must have successfully completed at least one year of studies in their home institution;
For target group 2 (TGII): students need either to be registered in a HEI (not included in the partnership) of the third country concerned by the lot or having obtained a university degree or equivalent by an institution of these third countries. They will need to justify how this study period abroad will benefit them (and their direct socio-economical environment) and include letters of support in their individual application;
For target group 3 (TGIII): students need to be nationals of one of the third countries concerned by the lot and be part of the vulnerable target groups.
Must have sufficient knowledge of the language of the courses or of one of the languages currently spoken in the hosting countries.
No student can benefit from more than one mobility activity in the same project.

Scholarship
Subsistence allowance:

1000 € per month for undergraduate and graduate students
1500 € per month for doctorate students
1800 € per month for post-doctorates
2500 € per month for academic staff

Study Trips to Germany by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds Study Visits and Study Seminars and Practicals in the Federal Republic of Germany by groups of foreign students under the direction of university teachers.
I. Funding Objectives

This funding programme aims to deliver subject-related knowledge by arranging corresponding visits, tours and information meetings (Study Visits) respectively by organising subject-related seminars and practical courses in the field of higher education (e.g. specialist courses, block seminars, workshops) at the invitation of a German university which is then also responsible for arranging seminars and practicals in academia, business and industry and, possibly, in public institutions (Study Seminars and Practicals).
To facilitate meetings with German students, academics and researchers to establish and maintain contacts between German and foreign universities.
To enable participants to acquire a greater understanding of Germany by providing an insight into economic, political and cultural life in Germany. This part of the visit must not make up more than one third of the stay.

In the case of Study Seminars and Practicals, the programme aims to encourage a policy of reciprocal invitation, although this does not constitute a condition of support, which means that funding can initially also be given for visits in only one direction.
Cultural events (e.g. concert trips) may be funded if the focus is on subject-specific meetings between students and the relevance to higher education is proven.
A maximum of one application per year can be considered per department, institute and applicant. Required / mandatory excursions or measures which have already been carried out cannot be funded.
Annual funding for applicants, departments or institutes is not possible.
II. Target Group and Length of Stay

Funding can be provided for groups of students who are fully matriculated in their third semester or higher in a respective degree programme at a foreign university and who travel under guidance and direction of a university teacher. Groups must be made up of at least 10 participants and must not, as a rule exceed 15 persons. One university teacher may additionally be funded as an accompanying person.
Group Visits and Study Seminars and Practicals should last no less than 7 days. Funding is available for a maximum 12 days (including travel days), although the stays may last longer.

III. Funding
The DAAD takes out health, accident and public/private liability insurance for each funded group. Further details are contained in the Award Letter.
Due to the limited financial resources, the DAAD reserves the right to reduce the level of funding. It is assumed that the universities or other sponsors (e.g. support associations, companies from business and industry) will contribute to the overall costs, so that the personal contribution to be made by participants remains at a reasonable level.
III. 1. Study Trips
Regulations applying to Indonesia (among other countries)
a) Programme planning
The DAAD plans the programme design. Wishes and preferences stated in the application form will, as far as possible, be taken into consideration. However, it is likely that cuts or changes will be made to the programme due to decisions reached by the selection committees. The DAAD provides a travel guide fluent in the agreed group language who is responsible for the smooth running of and compliance with the programme drawn up by DAAD Head Office
b) Meals and accommodation
As a rule, groups will be accommodated in twin or three-bed rooms in hotels or youth guesthouses/hostels. The DAAD pays the subsistence costs (meals and accommodation) for the group (including for the group leader and, where appropriate, bus driver) during the stay in Germany.
c) Transport
The DAAD decides on the choice of means of transport. In many cases, a coach/bus will be used to ensure that the visit programme schedule can run smoothly. In the case of groups that cannot travel to Germany with their own coach/bus, the DAAD can hire a coach/bus for travel within Germany. If the group travels in a coach/bus not hired by the DAAD, a seat must be available for the DAAD guide; in such cases, the DAAD will pay the fuel costs for travel within Germany. For some programme points, however, use of public transport may be more suitable. The conditions will be advised on an individual basis.
The DAAD regrets that it is unable to pay any international travel costs.
III. 2. Study Seminars and Practicals
Regulations applying to Indonesia (among other countries)
Groups receive a flat-rate sum of € 40.- per person and day as a subsidy towards the travel and subsistence costs.
IV. Application papers
The DAAD is only able to process punctually submitted complete applications. The DAAD regrets that it is unable to call for any missing documents or papers to be subsequently submitted. A full and complete funding application comprises the following elements:

Application form (download here ) ; including budget and list of participants
Reasons for and contentual description of the programme for one subject area, including a precise list of the visit and tour preferences, both in terms of subject-related (academic) content and of German area studies content. Vague or generally-worded descriptions (e.g. visits to museums, universities) are not acceptable.
Schedule (in tabular form)
Description of the contentual preparation for the group trip (e.g. preparatory seminars).
Proof of contacts on the German side (in the case of Study Trips), especially in higher education (e.g. by sending invitations or letters of confirmation).
Proof of contacts on the foreign side (in the case of Study Seminars and Practicals) who state their opinion on the importance of the Study Seminar and Practical specified in the application and on how this seminar or practical is integrated into the academic progress of the foreign participants.
(General agreements, cooperation agreements and so on are not, on their own, sufficient proof and can only be submitted as support for the proof of contacts)

V. Application and Decision Process
Applications must be submitted in such good time as to ensure that they reach the DAAD by the following deadlines (Date of Receipt at the DAAD in Bonn).

01 February for trips to begin at the 01.06 (DAAD decision made at the mid of April)
01 May for trips to begin at the 01.09 (DAAD decision made at the mid of July)
01 November for trips begin at the 01.03 (DAAD decision made at the mid of January)

Applicants are recommended in all cases to use the most recent version of this information Sheet and the corresponding Application Form when submitting their application. These forms can be found on the DAAD website (www.daad.de) under “information for Foreigners – Sources of the Financial Support – Scholarship Database”.
The decision will be made by a selection committee at the DAAD. Due to the limited financial resources, experience has shown that only some of the applications can be approved that meet the programme’s three funding objectives. These are particularly well organised visits of cultural and educational policy interest with a clear focus on encouraging meeting and encounter.
V.1 Study Trips
Applications may be placed by university teachers from foreign universities. Applications must be written in German or English and submitted to DAAD Jakarta Office one month prior to the deadline specified above. DAAD Jakarta will forward the applications to the DAAD in Bonn together with a statement of opinion.
Before placing the application, please inquire the DAAD Jakarta Office as to the latest date by which the application must have been submitted (recieved) there in order to ensure that the application reaches the DAAD in Bonn by 01 February, 01 May respectively 01 November.
V.2. Study Seminars and Practicals
Applications may be placed by university teachers from German universities. Applications must be submitted to the DAAD via the International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) of the German university.

The East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship provides Master’s and Doctoral funding for graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S. to participate in educational and research programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate study at the University of Hawai‘i. Through East-West Center affiliation, awardees become part of a growing network of students and alumni forging the shape and substance of the world’s most vibrant region.

Center fellowships are provided for degree study at the University of Hawai‘i and participation in the Center’s international and intercultural programs. The Center and the University of Hawai‘i, located in a unique island setting with a distinctive multicultural heritage, offer premier resources for studies on Asia, the Pacific, and the U.S.

Degree fellows have opportunities to participate in graduate certificate programs offered in leadership studies, international intercultural studies, population studies and natural resource management that enhance their degree studies. Required tests include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for applicants from non-English speaking countries, and the GRE or GMAT for all applicants as required by university departments.
Award recipients who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must meet exchange visitor (J-1 visa) requirements.

Degree Fellowship Requirements:
Beyond fulfilling degree requirements at the University of Hawai‘i, East-West Center students are required to take part in the Center’s education program. These requirements include:

Core Program that meets weekly during the fall semester.
Spring Core Issues Course, which will consist of a series of presentations and small-group discussions.
Community Service. Degree Fellows are expected to devote 90 hours to community service during their award period.
Involvement in an EWC Research Project.
Interdisciplinary Certificate. Students not involved in an EWC research project must pursue one of several interdisciplinary certificates.

International Doctoral Program (IDP) in Energy Science

The international Doctoral Program in Energy Science is offered to provide foreign students and researchers, who have a Master’s degree (or equivalent), an opportunity to further their studies toward a Doctoral degree at Kyoto University. In this Doctoral Program, Japanese proficiency is not required since students can obtain the necessary credits by choosing ones among a variety of subjects presented in English and their research works are also supervised in English. An evaluation of eligibility for admission will be made on the basis of the documents submitted to our School Affairs Office.
Eight students will be admitted each year with a scholarship from the Japanese Government.

Allowance: 155,000 to 158,000yen per month for at most 36 months (subject to change depending upon the annual budget of each year)
